The restaurant was located on a pretty and quaint street. Excellent and fresh sushi in a relaxing and kid-friendly decor...we enjoyed the sushi plate and the daily special 'Mystery roll'. The delicious mystery roll had buttery ruby spicy tuna, green jalapeño, etc. We liked this creative roll had no cream cheese or sugary mayonnaise sauce on top. The buckwheat noodle soup came with two shrimp tempuras and three vegetable tempuras. There was just just one coil of noodle. The broth was average. The size portion was too small and we will not re-order this soup. The service was friendly and prompt. The restrooms were clean and had a changing table. We parked for free on the street. read more

We went this place on Tuesday around 7pm. They had 25% off deals on list of rolls, so we ordered 7 rolls. About 15minutes later everything came out on a fancy boat with sliced cucumbers and avocados. All the rolls looks very nice and it surely tasted good as well. Although we like the rolls with less rice, 7 rolls wasn't enough for four of us so we ordered 4 more rolls from promotion menu. Second round was even tastier than before. Overall, service was good and food was excellent. Definitely will go back time to times. Highly recommended! read more

This place is awesome! The sushi is always fresh and perfect. I went here with a lunch date, and good times were had by all; despite spending most of my time teaching my dining counterpart how to use chopsticks! Regardless of this minor character flaw, the restaurant provided an excellent setting for all that "get to know ya" conversation. The décor is the perfect mix of American and Japanese. There is plenty of room to have table conversation, and not feel right on top of each other. Staff is friendly and attentive. The master sushi chef creates a masterpiece with every single play the makes. The rolls are so good you almost don't realize exactly how much eating at the time. One of the major downsides of this restaurant is that it's in downtown Salisbury. I'm not entirely sure how comfortable I would be strolling around that neighborhood after the sun goes down. However, if you're looking for a sushi lunch this would definitely be the place to check out. I look forward to trying this place again in the near future; keep up the good work! read more

Had dinner with a friend on a Saturday night - made a reservation which probably wasn't necessary as they weren't full. Had a nice cozy table in the corner looking out into the plaza and a very friendly server. Their wine list is good and the food was very good! I had the NY Strip bento box which was the special and it was very good and a lot of food! They put real crab meat on the seaweed salad and the shrimp shu mai was tender and had just enough sauce. My date had a selection of sushi and it was all fresh and tasted good. I will definitley come back to this restaurant! With two glasses of wine, two saki's, an edamame app, and our meals the bill was $90 before tip which is reasonable for a good meal. read more

We ordered 6 rolls from here and they were the smallest rolls I have even seen. Unfortunately the size was not compensated by lower prices. We paid $71!!! Having house guests staying with us, we found it best to order additional sushi from Ikebana. Their sizes were double and the prices were cheaper. I like to visit on Tuesdays when they have half off sushi rolls - otherwise I spend way too much on several rolls. I've tried several different rolls and really enjoyed them all. Honestly, I order takeout from here nearly every weekend. Their sushi is totally worth the money. Nothing else compares. The fish is always fresh and never has that fishy taste you get from other restaurants. The sushi is also the perfect bite. I've noticed other places try to cram waaaay too much fish in their rolls and the balance is just not there. Not the case with Kanpai. Their flavor combos are always amazing. I normally avoid influencing a restaurant's rating with service, but this place was hands down one of the slowest places I've everrr been to. And this includes hustle and bustle, understaffed joints in Frisco, NYC & Miami. I've tried Kanpai thrice now, so it's not a fly-by judgement. Back to the food, though. The sushi could have made up for the wait in time (which btw was 2 hours to those who think I'm exaggerating) but alas. It didn't. I feel unkind even as I type this, but it just did not live up to the hype of fellow Yelpers. Really, 5 stars are handed out too freely... Portions were child sized. Fish was mediocre, really average at best -maybe it's an eastern shore thing? & although our waitress was kind, service is a collaborative effort. It was inattentive & understaffed (1 sushi chef, a negligent hostess, and 2 waitresses for a packed house). You could see our waitress was even flustered with the wait in food coming out. I can comment positively on the location- very quaint side of downtown in a historic building. But that's about it. If a friends suggests this place again, I'll oblige and hopefully I can update with a better experience. But until than, I'm avoiding this place. read more

It is a nice little space on Salisbury's Downtown Plaza. Has a nice little sushi bar, but sushi isn't what I was after on my first Dinner trip here (I'd previously had Lunch here). For starters, I and my dining companion had the Kabocha Pumpkin Soup, which was very nice. For main entree, we had the special that night, the "Seafood Okonomiyaki", which is a "pancake" filled with vegetables and pieces of shrimp and lobster with a light sauce and bits of crab on top. It was delicious. The servers were friendly and knew the menu items well. It felt like a departure from what I was used to in this area, like I was somewhere else such as a small eatery in a big city and didn't have to travel to do so. read more

This place is excellent, the quality of food/sushi surpasses any within the Salisbury area. Very good staff Chef Katsumi is very good at what he does. Service isn't slow-it's the quality of preparation administered in preparing the food that makes it all worth while (patience is required) cause it's made to order. Small place but doable! Kanpai used to be one of my favorite sushi spots in Salisbury. Although the service took occasionally longer than some others in town and the rolls were smaller the food was overall pretty good. However, the one thing i could not go without was their "Crunch roll" served with a mango sauce. To my dismay my pass two visits I was told they did not have it. So on my latest sushi trip i called to check their hours and also to inquire about the availability of my beloved crunch roll. On a positive they were open but i was informed that they would no longer have this roll. I know between myself and my friends we consumed enough to make it worth keeping. I went into this lunch with high hopes given the rave reviews on Yelp. I was very disappointed. Parking was easy, there is a municipal lot that is free if you are under 2 hours around the corner. A short walk and you're there. When I walked into the door the first thing you smell is must. The entire restaurant is very musty. We were told to sit wherever we want (there were only about 3 tables full as it was a Monday during lunch). We were eventually given menus and we ordered. The service was horrible. Horrible horrible horrible. I had to get up to get my own napkins. Our salads were up on the window for 16 minutes (we timed it) before we were served them. Everytime our table tried to make eye contact with the waitress she would look away. While our salads sat there our server wiped off tables, organized the menus, checked her phone 3 times, and went to the back a few times. The salad was just spring mix in the center of a place with 8 pieces of cut tomatoes/cucumbers spaced around the edge of the plate. The ginger dressing was decent though. Finally we got our salads and 5 minutes later our sushi was delivered to the table. It would have been great timing if it wasn't for our server. The Chef special sushi rolls that we ordered were pretty uninspiring. They were small and boring. The fish tasted OK but it didn't particularly stand out as very fresh. This place certainly is not worth the hype and I won't be returning. read more

Based on reviews, seemed like best place in Salisbury for Sushi. Decided to give it a try for a birthday dinner. Hostess was not overly friendly, well she was not pleasant to say the least. We did try several of the popular items on the menu along with two rolls, ramen and two appetizers. I have to admit, it must have been an off day for them because neither the service nor the food was very appealing. I really enjoyed my soup with tempura shrimp and vegetables. My husband enjoyed his sushi too. My soup was well- balanced with soft and crunchy elements and the broth had depth without resorting to a lot of salt. The ambiance was warm and family friendly. I am only giving three stars because of the service. I took my daughter to this place. We sat there for over 10 minutes before we even were greeted and given a drink order. We sat at the sushi bar. The Sushi was good. I had better but it was good. The wait staff was too involved with bigger tables and it seemed we were not as important. Prices are a bit high. But The Sushi Chef was very good. I feel they need a staff just to serve the sushi bar and timing is everything. I do rate this place high besides the first impression I had. I will try to go back soon. read more

If you come with a party more then four, bring a sleeping bag. I made a reservation on a Friday night for 7:30, and the waitress didn't bring the food out until 9:40. To make matters worse she forgot my ocean city roll. Also don't expect generous portions. This place is more about quality then quantity. Even though the food took its time, it was fairly good, and nicely presented. Just don't come on an empty stomach. An excellent place for sushi. Highly recommended. It probably deserves another star for the surprise element (Salisbury, MD???). Not cheap, but the quality is worth the price. The very best food anywhere!!!! Can't believe I hadn't written a review yet. The kitchen food made by kumi is awesome!! The bento boxes are always great!! Last nights special was mahi mahi and ribeye steak and crab cake and seaweed salad. Her soups are always great especially the spicy scallop soup. The sushi chef katsumi is the best anywhere!!!! We love the tuna tostada appetizer its to die for!! The fish is the highest quality for sushi!! The rolls are especially good. Our favorites are west oc and danger. Also any roll on their special board is excellent. The bar has great cocktails made by Jet! Everything there is positive. Fresh sushi takes a while so have a drink and don't be in a hurry. This is by far my favorite restaurant!!! The food is absolutely delicious and you can taste the freshness of the food. My favorite appetizer is the spring rolls and my husband loves the Okonomiyaki. For dinner we both usually get the teriyaki chicken and it is to die for!! The Teriyaki sauce is something I have never had before and usually end up getting extra because it is so good. For dessert we usually get the mochi ice cream. Anytime my Husband lets me pick the restaurant we are going to, i always choose here :) Our 7 year old daughter also loves coming here so i find it kid friendly as well. read more
