So this place is 4 stars, but 5 because, damn, that chef is a handsome dude (no homo). Anyways, just ate here not even an hour ago with friends. The place is right next to Powerhouse Gym, which is really convenient since you could get awesome sushi right after getting an awesome pump. We ordered the dragon roll, and a cucumber-wrapped roll that is NOT on the menu. I saw it here on yelp and showed them the picture, and they made it for me! What a cool dude. The dragon roll was really good as well, but I kind of didn't like the typical "crab mix" that a lot of sushi places use to fill their california rolls. But that's personal preference, some people might dig it. They also have Korean food here, which is pretty cool. I like places that don't really try to over-do their menu with a lot of food. Places that offer a smaller menu, but pack a lot of punch in their dishes. Those places know what they are doing. The dragon roll was the bomb, and they don't use avocado on top. I think it's egg, but NOT tamago. It's hard to explain, but if you eat sushi a lot, you'll know the difference. I also really dig places that offer my love for cucumber-wrapped rolls. Mine was delicious, but a little hard to put in my mouth, because it's so big (that's what she said). Anyways, give this place a try. I'm glad I did! Plus it's closer to me than Noble Fish, so I'd go here if I want to sit down and eat, but to Noble if I want to get take-out. I'm not sure why this place gets high ratings. There are other much better places in the area. The food was just average. What really disappointed us, so beware credit card users, there is a 4% surcharge on any payment via credit card. 4% is higher than the banks charge. There are signs posted by the table but you don't see them until after you're seated. Also when the bill came it was a list of numbers each marked "item". None of these items were identified by name. You have to either memorize what you ordered or go back to the menu to see what you were charged for. Server was pleasant but not experienced. Won't be visiting a second time. read more

My first question at any sushi place is whether their spicy tuna is minced up or a hunk of fish. Their answer here was minced. However, my follow up question is whether they have white tuna, and to that the answer was yes! I ordered the lunch special of spicy Cali and spicy salmon. Average at best. The prices were a bit high for what you received even when ordering a lunch special. For example, no soup AND salad - it's one or the other. I brought a group of 8 people on Saturday to Sushi Gallery and had a great experience. The food was delicious all around and our entire group has had a great time. We came here for an early dinner and it seems they were a little short handed. I only saw one waitress and one guy behind the sushi counter (I assume was the owner). I ordered the hwe dupbap and my husband ordered the Dynamite and Tiger Roll. My hwedupbap came out first and I started picking at it slowly thinking that my husband's food would be out shortly. I had to stop and wait because it started to get a little long between my food coming out and my husband. Meanwhile another table who ordered after us got some of their food. We ended up asking the waitress how much longer it would be for my husband's food and she said only a bit longer. About 7 minutes later the food came out and then he was a happy camper again. Then the sushi chef came out with a side of red snapper, which we didn't order. He said it was on the house. I think it was his way of saying sorry for the food delay. The food was great. I always usually get chirashi when I go to sushi places and having some freshness from a salad and gochujang sauce. Heck yeah. My husband also thought his rolls were very tasty and he can be very picky about his sushi. I also saw Lisa C. mention ramen here! I'm crazy about ramen! So much that everywhere I travel if they have ramen I'm trying that place out AND I take the time to make my own 12 hour broth. Soooooo I will have to come back and try it some time. I definitely understand that they were short staffed and a few groups had walked in one after another so it may have overwhelmed the kitchen a bit. And then to receive something on the house beause our food took a little long. That's great hospitality. We didn't complain at all, but just asked a question and you get over the moon hospitality. Having staff that can read tables and offer things like this means that you have fine dining hospitality in a mom and pop restaurant. It's so hard to find places like this one. read more

Best Sushi in Michigan! My hubby and I love Sushi but it is hard to find a good place in the area. We have a favorite place in Romeo but this place is much closer and really good. Super fresh and reasonably priced. It was dead inside (just one other guy) but I think it is just because it opened recently and since it is is a shopping mall easy to miss. Do yourself a favor and go there. Try the "Sunday Morning". So good and big portion. read more

This was quite the surprise. I've never felt so welcomed in a restaurant before. The service here is top notch and the food is delicious as well. We ordered our food, and halfway through the sushi chef came over with a plate of assorted sushi for us to have. Later he said when he was young he was always still hungry when he would go out to restaurants and he wanted to make sure we weren't going hungry. Such a gesture just warmed my heart, which just made a good dining experience even better! It's easy to miss this place, it's tucked all the way back in a strip mall by a grocery store, but you really need to give this place a try. I'm very glad I did. read more

This place is legitimate. Very very good. 0% chance we would have tried it without the excellent Yelp reviews. It's in a very discrete location in a run of the mill mini-mall. It barely looked like it was open. It was a quiet Friday night. The sushi chef is very experienced and pays great attention to detail. My 10 year old boy is something of a sushi fanatic and he says the Sunday Morning roll is his absolute favorite. I try to avoid the cream cheese-based rolls out of principle but now I know what I've been missing. Noble Sushi was packed with a line at 1pm but this place is 5 minutes away and is deserted. Some friends and I had been planning on going to Noble Fish in Clarkston, but they closed at 7:30, so we yelped some other options and this came up. The reviews are SO ACCURATE. This place is amazing, much better than I would've thought with it being in a a trip mall. I got the seaweed salad, miso soup, the Sunday Morning and BBQ eel. Both rolls were so yummy, the Sunday was perfectly fried. They also offer brown rice, and my friend with a peanut allergy can safely eat here. At the end of our meal the chef came out and gave us some samples. You can really tell that they care about their food and the people eating it. I wish I could give even more stars. read more

Looking for Sushi Gallery? Look instead for the Outback on 14 Mile and Campbell, otherwise you just might miss the peculiar shopping plaza on the border with Clawson and Madison Heights where the restaurant resides, tucked away into a corner. Generally speaking, holes in the wall like Sushi Gallery are either diamonds in the rough or passable. The shopfront is nearly anonymous behind an open sign, the Yelp sticker, and a few gentle Japanese posters for Asahi beer and a famous 17th-century style print of a geisha. All signs point to a great experience. The interior is a bit more modern than I expected, tables separated by a low wall and a sushi bar in the back corner, with seating there if you want to watch fish sliced and diced. A television was trained to the local news station while we visited. The menu splits into Korean options, like bibimap (in effect, an egg-topped rice bowl) and jap chae, and a select number of Japanese entrees, including udon noodles, sushi, and donburi. There are not pages and pages to meander through, though their sushi menu is displayed on flip cards on the tabletop with corresponding photos, a cute touch and instructive for new diners. My beau and I split a jap chae on our dinner date and a selection of rolls, including the cherry blossom and the mango roll. For the record I could live off mango rolls, and probably did over a summer, so anyone who puts one on their menu immediately wins my affections. They have a selection of sashimi or handrolls, though again, the list is fairly short and split between plain (e.g., tuna, salmon) and combo rolls (e.g., California, dragon, etc.). A good many of these are cooked, great for the people in your party who might reject raw fish. The presentation of sushi wins high marks. The square plate was arranged with neatly cut rolls swizzled in the respective sauces, blossoms of wasabi and ginger in the corners. Rolls are particularly sizeable, though not too unbearable. Nothing is worse than trying to shove a giant half-dollar roll of seaweed and rice into your mouth. The Pink Lady roll was largest of them all, and pleasantly balanced between fish and fillings, all tightly squeezed down. The sweetness of eel sauce (I think) made a tasty counterbalance to the salmon. Staff is enthusiastic and helpful, though I suspect the young lady serving us was new to the restaurant. She had difficulty explaining the contents of a roll without much of a description, smiling and demurring from an answer, so we eventually looked it up on our phone. She managed the other tables well and the sushi chefs here are top notch. read more

Sushi Gallery is my absolute hands down favorite place to get sashimi and sushi rolls. They are the best kept secret in Oakland county. My favorites are the Pretty Woman, White Dragon and Triple Spicy Tuna roll. The proprietors are very hospitable people and often treat me with an extra piece of sashimi and delicious miso soup. As a lifetime foodie and Chef I don't pass out recommendations lightly but they have my highest. read more

Tried Sushi Gallery today based on several good reviews read here on Yelp. I've had sushi all over metro Detroit ONLY so sadly my standards aren't that high. That said I had a far different experience with the sushi itself than many of the reviews here. First let me say that what I can agree with is that the couple that own the store were both very kind and pleasant. There is no lack of niceness at the Sushi Gallery. When we arrived there was only one only 1 person sitting at the bar chatting away with the chef. It was a good sign. The waitress/wife gave us menus and the first thing I noticed was a lack of paper sheet listing off all the roll accompanied by a pencil for me to make perfectly straight lines in open white boxes. All the rolls they have are not on the menu. Rolls that were in photos on the wall or online where not on the menu. Thus I freaked out and only ordered from the menu, but I would have liked to know the full scope of what I could have had. Meso soup was good, edamame was good, the 4 little surprise deep fried dumplings were good.... now onto the sushi. We ordered 4 rolls; Alaskan roll, salmon teriyaki roll, double shrimp tempura roll, and the Firecracker roll. So I'm totally ok with large rolls despite my tiny mouth hole. However I want the roll to stay together on the trip from the soy sauce bowl to my mouth.2 of the 4 rolls were falling apart and more of the rice seemed to end up on my plate than in my mouth. The Alaskan roll tasted a bit "odd"... can't explain it more than that, and the teriyaki roll was just not my taste. For the 4 rolls, edamame, and meso soup our bill was 44.00. Based on my latest favorite sushi stop in Rochester this rolls are far too expensive for the taste. Bottom line is that you don't know unless you try it. I tried it and won't be back. My standards for spicy cali and spicy tuna are HIGH now thanks to this place. The owner is a wonderful man, my normal server Mark is a sweetheart, and I just love everything about this place. Okay so I'm not a variety sushi eater. If anything I'm highly picky and basically go for anything that doesn't have fish/eel/shrimp/ect. I love spiciness so I always go during lunch and they got a combo spicy cali and tuna for $8.99. I DON'T KNOW ANY OTHER PLACE THAT PUTS CRUNCH ON THE TUNA. That's my basic selling point for this place, in addition to how BIG the rolls are. Sorry for those who praise Noble Fish, I'll take Sushi Gallery anyday. read more

Went here for my birthday on a whim and based off of other Yelp reviews. Best decision! This. sushi. IS. AMAZING! I grew up on the East Coast and love all types of fish and seafood. I consider myself a sushi lover and have been eating raw fish since I was a young girl. I frequent Noble Fish and Tai Fai in the area. I wanted good sushi for a dine-in dinner, and decided to try Sushi Gallery since Noble Fish was closed. I got a couple of their rolls and a sashimi boat - everything was fresh with great flavor, and the rice was cooked to perfection. This restaurant is very unassuming and quiet, hiding in a strip mall. Don't let that fool you - the interior is cozy and clean with great table seats and a sushi bar. My kind of place! My only complaint is the music - for a place with such great food and good service, you would think they would pick a better station, or not play it so loud! But I'm getting knit-picky... If you want good good good sushi this is your place. read more

Very filling 8-10 piece rolls, the miso is the best I've ever had, and they use REAL FRESH wasabi which I have never seen in Michigan. Please don't make the mistake of passing on this place bc it's in a strip mall. We had an excellent experience only surpassed by the food. We aren't sure if the main chef was the owner but he sure acted as so and treated us as if we were family. Favorite Sushi restaurant in the area! I've ordered from here a number of times and have always been satisfied. They offer a wide range of special sushi rolls and you can't go wrong with any of them. I ordered the Smokey n' Crispy and Dynamite rolls yesterday and they were delicious. Do the restaurant a favor and call/pick up the order rather than use a third-party app. Not only are you able to talk with the extremely nice gentleman making the rolls behind the counter but you are also supporting the small business by avoiding a third-party taking 30% profit for fulfilling your order. Very friendly staff and all around good atmosphere. We had Korean and sushi the night we tried it. The ginger salad was very tasty and the gyoza are pan fried wonderfulness. The bulgogi was a bit Western for our taste, being described by Yours Truly as "a bit dull and dry". The egg nigiri was excellent, being made in the fashion of a tiny dash of wasabi and very artfully done. The egg was cut artfully and the Chef put on a thin line of eel sauce in a wavery pattern that made the nigiri visually appealing. The rice was not as 'tight' as it could have been and the pieces fell apart when being picked up. We also tried their Sunshine roll, a fruitsplosion of exoticness, which was very good an highly unusual. The Miso soup left much to be desired, as the seaweed taste was overpowering and the tofu was soft. All of the ingredients were fresh and very artfully prepared. While not exactly Gangnam Style, a very good offering and we'll go back again. read more

I love Sushi Gallery! I discovered it randomly, on Yelp, and after reading the great reviews decided to give it a try. The sushi is fresh and the rolls are unique. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. Often, they go above and beyond (bringing random rolls/treats to the table when you dine in or, like today, they gave me a free soup with my to-go order simply to replace the masago I ordered a roll without). They've got a more expansive menu too - I've tried the bibimbap which was great as well. Make sure to order extra wasabi if you're getting carryout; they usually give a pretty small amount. Would love to be able to give an "Incomplete" or "Zero" stars. I've been here 2 times now (as of today) and both times I stood in the middle of the restaurant for several minutes - No Sushi Chef, No Servers, No Host...nothing. The first time this happened, the lights were very low and I stood there and stood there and stood there....no one, so I left. I figured the first time had to be a fluke, so I tried again. Walked in...lights dim but there is one table of 4, so I'm sure its a go.... Insert Price is Right horn. I stood and waited and waited and waited and left again. Now the food...Miso good not great Ginger Salad OK I've had better. Because of all the Yelp reviews I tried the Lion Roll had say it was very good! Also had the vegetarian lunch rolls cucumber and radish both OK kind of bland. So 3 rolls Miso and Ginger Salad about $24 not overly expensive but not cheap. My daughter, a regular patron here, brought me for lunch. All I can say is how much I'm impressed with not only the food, but the staff. Rose, our server was simply outstanding. My daughter explained that I am unable to eat much rice and Rose offered the perfect suggestions based on what I liked, bringing me the most flavorful and freshest pieces of tuna and salmon I've ever had locally. We also ordered a spider and rainbow roll and appetizer of sunomono salad. Everything tasted amazing. This is a small place, tucked back in the corner of the strip mall where Valu-Market and Out back steakhouse are. Completely worth the search, I assure you they will not disappoint you. Royal Oak is not a Sushi hotspot. Noble fish is well know, but certainly not a place you can sit down and have a quiet meal. This is a small, clean and cute place with a mix os Sushi and Korean food. The sushi here is excellent. Fresh fish, good rice, and some interesting rolls to make the kids happy. The korean food also seems to be good too - my lovely wife ordered some and loved it. Excellent friendly service. Simple, but good. Recommended. read more
