I Love This Place. I think I've tried just about every sushi place in the Royal Oak/Madison Heights area, and while there are some good ones, let's be honest, some of them are just kind of gross. But even with the good ones, I grow a little tired of the lousy parking, inconvenient hours, crowdedness, and occasional "I'm-way-too-busy-to-deal-with-you" attitude I have encountered at some of these locations. But recently, one night I noticed the new Sushi Gallery with it's blinking "Open" sign, tucked into the corner of the strip mall after a trip to that big, old Value Center Marketplace and decided to give it a shot. The first impression I got after walking through the door was, "Wow! This place is warm, clean, and inviting. I wonder why more people don't know about it?" I found out that they had only been open a few weeks. The staff was incredibly nice and attentive and I get a kick out of the older Asian dudes behind the sushi counter. My tastes are a little strange in that I don't eat fish that swim, but they didn't have a problem with that. They quickly crafted my order of veggie sushi and fresh spring rolls, threw in a complimentary salad and I was on my way. Everything was great. Since then, I've been back, branched out a little and found their shrimp tempura roll, California roll and miso soup equally fresh and delightful. The service has been consistently great and their prices are affordable. I'm writing about Sushi Gallery because the restaurant has been relatively empty every time I've gone there and I really want to see them succeed. There's something really special about this place, the staff, and the food and I hope more people have a chance to experience the little Sushi Gallery that could. read more

Was looking to try somewhere new for take out tonight. I ended up with Sushi Gallery, and will definitely be back. My go-to place is usually Tai Fai. I know everyone loves Noble, and it IS delicious, but there's something about Tai Fai that keeps me coming back. So when I was reading Sushi Gallery yelp reviews, I almost just went to Tai Fai and called it a night. I'm glad I gave this place a shot. It's hiding in the corner of a strip mall at 14 and Campbell. I was surprised how large the restaurant is when I went in. I was immediately greeted by friendly staff, and received my food promptly (was told it'd be ready in 10 minutes when I called). I ordered the Lion King roll and the avocado and asparagus roll. Both were great, but the Lion King roll surpassed my expectations. It has this great smokey flavor to it. I could've eaten a million of them. I highly recommend it. I was eyeing the French Kiss and White Dragon, too. I definitely want to take Boyfriend there and try dining in. After I paid the pickup time went from 25 minutes to 60-80 minutes (when they give you a 20 minute window what time are you supposed to show up?). My partner and I came here for the first time Saturday afternoon. We knew it was gonna be good as soon as we walked into the dining room. We sat ourselves as the sign instructed. It's an intimate space. We sat for a little while before someone came to help us but the chef was the only one working so we weren't too pressed about it. I ordered a California roll and spicy salmon roll and my partner ordered the chicken teriyaki. The presentation was lovely and we were both satisfied with our meal. You can tell the chef puts a lot of care into his food. A very beautiful man came in at the tail end of our meal to check on us and give us the bill. I will admit. I was skeptical to come here for sushi when I can drive half a mile over to Noble Fish which has always been my sushi destination. Like the other reviewers commented, the sushi restaurant is tucked away in the inner corners of the strip mall. It is hard to notice it unless you are in that area often. After passing by numerous times, I had a sushi craving and decided to give it a go. The reviews on yelp reinforced my decision. I ordered a spider roll to go. I was welcomed warmly at the door. The service was just top notch. It definitely seems (and probably is) just an owner run restaurant with family members working there. I could be wrong, but that is the feel. When I opened my styrofoam box, I saw that the sushi chef had included a special treat. He asked me earlier if I was a fan of spicy food. I said "yes" but assumed it was for my sushi. He included a mini spicy crab salad which was delicious. My spider roll was also really yummy. I ate everything in one sitting and still craved more. I like this place a lot for the unique rolls but one issue I have every time is that the rolls are difficult to pick up without breaking (I'm a self proclaimed sushi queen and above average skills with a set if choppies). Still 5 stars. I continue to get sushi here, but usually carry out since my boyfriend doesn't eat sushi so I'll take it to his house while he gets a different carryout. But - I was out this way recently and decided to take my time and eat in. I sat at the sushi bar by myself and ordered an eel roll & a seaweed salad and some sake. I walked into this quaint little restaurant expecting a good dinner. All of the rave reviews had me feeling optimistic. I ordered a salmon roll, a yellowtail roll, an Alaskan roll, a yum-yum roll and a spider roll. The best of the bunch was the yum-yum, and it was average at best. The yellowtail was quite fishy. Granted, yellowtail varies, but this was undeniably not something you should want to serve. The salmon was almost as bad as the yellowtail. The crab in the spider roll was almost non-existent and was not fried to the point of having any crunch. additionally, the roll had too much lettuce and some sauce that made the roll gummy/squishy throughout. The Alaskan roll was filled with the same bad salmon, and wasn't fit to eat. When I asked the chef to try his yellowtail, he attempted to educate me on fish. Again, the same of salmon. Telling me that the fish was premium, fresh fish and that it must be good. I asked him again to try it. After a very awkward 5 minute exchange, he asked the waitress to try it, and even she reluctantly admitted that the fish was bad before going behind the doors to spit it out. If you eat sushi often and actually like the taste of fish, this is probably not the place for you. The chef's choice not to try his own fish said plenty for me. He knows they're serving substandard fish. At least the Sapporo was good. read more
