After many accolades and Michelin nods, it was an honor to dine at Sushi Hachi. Here's our experience. 1) Food: To start, we ordered the miso soup and edamame. Both were full of flavor and well prepared, especially the edamame. Sometimes the ones from the grocery store can be slimy. These are not. They are perfect. To eat, I got the shrimp tempura, Chicken Kara-age, and the 8th Street sushi. My wife ordered the Chef's Sushi Platter and swore she will crave the Yellowtail Cilantro Roll. Our daughter enjoyed the California Roll. 2) Drinks: Their cocktails hit each end of the liquor spectrum. My wife enjoyed their Manhattan. I appreciated that we could walk in on a Monday night without reservations and not feel underdressed. (We had been walking around DC all day) My husband and I each got the chef sushi platter, I thought it was plenty of food, but my husband also ordered an extra salmon roll afterwards. Sushi Hachi is a really cozy restaurant nestled in the historic Eastern Market neighborhood. We were able to find parking right in front of the restaurant on a Thursday evening. We were seated quickly at the bar. There weren't too many people so they had plenty of seating. I opted for their Chef's sushi platter. For $30 I felt like you got a lot for what you paid for. Also their regular sushi rolls are super affordable too. Love that! - Edamame was fine nothing special - miso soup was also fine, kind of salty - snapper miso ceviche, loved how colorful it was and the chips that came with it. I do wish it had a little bit of a kick to it. It was a bit too sweet for my liking. - 5 piece nigiri. Tasty. My favorite was the salmon followed by the tuna - Yellowtail cilantro roll. My favorite of the night however it wasn't anything that I would go out of my way for I loved the plates and the small ceramic glasses that they give you with your hot sake. Staff were friendly and very attentive and the ambiance is nice. It's like a typical sushi place. Great to come for a date or with friends. I had a wonderful Mother's Day with my adult son, at Sushi Hachi. It was quiet, which is what I enjoy, while eating sushi, and thinking of Japanese culture. The sushi has always been fresh, beautifully presented, the dishes are so graceful, there were fresh tulips on each table, a perfect lunch with my most favorite first born. And, for the most part of it, we had the restaurant all to ourselves, on Mother's Day, who can ask for more? Started with the Red Snapper ceviche. It was so good that I reverted to a fork to clear the bowl. I accompanied the meal with the house hot sake that paired well with the fish. It was a nice upgrade to my usual draft beer selection. I had two rolls and both were excellent. The spicy tuna avocado roll was superb and the yellowtail scallion roll was fresh and very tasty. I added a third roll, called the Alaska. It was a great combination and was the perfect way to end a celebratory evening. The service is always the star of the night at Sushi Hachi! My server was attentive and quick while looking calm and zen throughout. The managers/owners each stopped by the table and we talked about the neighborhood and I felt a connection to my Capitol Hill community. All-around it was an outstanding evening. I'm torn writing this review. In general, their food is above average. However when the name of the restaurant has 'sushi' in it, I expect their sushi to be really good. For me, sushi includes good rice. The rice in their nigiri was the worst sushi rice I have ever ever ever tasted. It was like eating dense blob of hard, dry rice. No hint of vinegar and minor sugar, nor was it appropriately soft. It was like dense rock. The rice was so so so bad that I can't in good conscience recommend this restaurant. They can help you decide on a dish or a drink and they're happy to take their time answering your questions. That being said, sometimes the service can be a little bit slow. The food was very tasty. I honestly did not like the rolls with the pico de gallo on top - I scraped the tomatoes off. I like the creativity, but tomatoes and raw fish are just not the vibe for me. One thing I love about this place is that the rolls are slightly smaller, and thus cheaper, meaning if you order a roll you don't like but don't like to waste food (like me), it's a light lift. Prices are very reasonable, the neighbourhood is great, and the venue looks nice. However, I'm just not a fan. I think this is the first restaurant that I have ever been to where you have to order and pay (with tip) online at the table. The server did not clearly explain that so we waited much longer than we had to. What would happen if people were unable to use the online system for whatever reason? Because the servers did not take our order directly there was constant confusion on which plates went where, even though the online orders had names for individual people at the table. The fish did not taste as fresh as could be but that may be because we went on a Monday night when the stock might not have turned over. Another weird thing was that I had a sea bass sashimi order that was supposed to be 3 pieces (vs the 2 piece nigiri) and instead had two pieces that were cut the same size as the fish on the nigiris. Don't know if the kitchen had a braino or just took the slices off some nigiri. I'm never going to another restaurant where I have to order online at the table. The online system glitched a couple of times in ordering because there were sell-outs of items (their house sake!) in real time. The system was not intuitive in redoing your order after being notified of the inventory sellout. I couldn't figure out how to do it without hitting the back button of my browser so I was worried about being charged twice. read more

I have only ordered carry out from here before and I think it was okay. I liked all of the rolls that I got. A friend and I ordered 4 and shared and shared a dessert. Inside it cute and decorated upscale. The rolls cost a couple of dollars above their competitors, which would be Torai down the street. I've eaten here a handful of times with friends. It has a cute clean vibe and I like that you cab either order through a waiter or through a QR code at the table. As far as the food goes, the most recent time I went, it wasn't as fresh as the previous times - one of our raw sushi rolls was actually a bit warm.
