Fantastic omakase. We did the upgraded chefs version and it was a great variety of flavors. We also really enjoyed the sake and bourbon varieties. The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The only odd thing was a crying baby, and multiple people in shorts despite their warnings to follow a dress code.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Absolutely earned its stars. The chef was attentive and focussed on his craft. The sushi was life changing and the service was kind and hospitable. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Calming aesthetic environment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 5 stars!

We went to Sushi Nakazawa for my birthday celebration some time last month. We were able to get a reservation a couple of weeks early. We arrived slightly earlier than our reservation time but we were gladly seated at the sushi bar after a few minutes of arriving. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place was quite intimate and wasn't too difficult to find (given that it was our first time to visit).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We went handed a simple menu. There was Classic Omakase at $190 and several supplements: we picked the Caviar Monaka ($45) and A5 Wagyu Sushi ($18). We weren't in a mood for an alcoholic drink but we ordered hot tea which the staff served almost immediately. We were first served the Caviar Monaka, then the rest of the omakase - some nigiri we had are salmon, king salmon, trout, sea scallops, squid, blue crab, tiger shrimp, snapper, mackerel, tuna (including otoro), uni, salmon roe, and sea eel. For the dessert, we had tamago and milk custard. They also gave me a birthday candle on top of the milk custard. I'm just glad they didn't serve matcha because I'm not a fan. The service is fantastic and very much what we expected from a Michelin star restaurant. The quality of the sushi was excellent - probably the best one we had. The prices are reasonable and we would definitely go back given a chance. This place needs to be given another star!

Sushi Nakazawa provided a truly unforgettable experience. Located below the Waldorf Astoria, this location impresses from the first step in the door. We were seated in the dining area, and while we did not have a good view of the chefs at work while we ate, their work was impressive and absolutely worth every minute. Each of the 7 courses was exceptionally paired and plated. Our service was excellent, being attended to by multiple individuals that all explained the varied plates to us, made sure our drinks were full, and answered any questions at the drop of a hat. I do not think my words will do the dishes justice and hope that the pictures I captured help to tell the story of delight we experienced at sushi nakazawa. Each bite brought a symphony of flavors and textures together, and built on the last. They found such unique tastes that never felt out of place. Bursts of wasabi and yuzu served to emphasize the perfection already found in each fish. The classic omakase experience was amazing from start to finish and I cannot wait to find an excuse to return.

Unbelievable experience. I can just start to say that, for a 1 Michelin star they absolutely deserved it and if not more stars. Omakase is a favorite for me and I really haven't had it in a long while. So me and my wife decided to spend our anniversary celebration here. We reserved randomly on a Friday for the omakase experience and sat at the bar instead of in the dining room. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place isn't big at all, and I can very well see it getting super busy. But for this Friday afternoon, we were literally the only 2 people in the whole restaurant. That was absolutely special.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was just us, the front staff, and the chef. The front staff was very knowledgeable. We perused the sake list, and boy do they have a lot of sake. We picked a bottle that was the in between of sweet and bitter and we both loved it. It complimented the pieces that the chef made very well. Some of the fish that I had before, will never taste the same after having it here. Yellowtail was definitely an eye opener for me. It was just another level where I didn't know it could taste that good. Sitting at the bar is pricier, but the quality and experience is worth it. You can get the same pieces at the dining table but it comes out on plates, in comparison to sitting at the bar where the chef makes it and you immediately eat it. There is a difference even if it's ever so slightly. Overall, the experience was definitely up there for me. It just makes me yearn wanting to go to Japan. But Nakazawa now has a place in my heart, and I hope they won't go anywhere for a very long time.

We had an amazing omakase experience here. Every course of the 20-course meal (granted it was 1 piece of sushi per course) was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. I also really appreciate that they're open for lunch. You definitely can't find that many omakase, or fine dining in general, that will open for lunch on a weekday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I highly recommend sitting at the sushi counter. It's a bit more pricey, but definitely worth it. You'll get to enjoy some pieces and the full chef's experience that you would miss out on in the dining room.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Overall, it was a great experience and we'll definitely come again.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is tucked on the backside of the Waldorf Astoria hotel in DC.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's relatively easy to find the staff was super friendly, knowledgeable, and prompt with refilling water and other beverages. I give this experience a 4.5/5. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat at the Chef's counter which was an awesome experience being able to watch the chefs prepare the sushi and interact with them.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ended up going for the super omakase which is $310/pp and comes with the supplemental add ons that the original omakase $190/pp does not. The add-ons included caviar, Wagyu, beef, white truffle from Italy, and maybe one other item I'm forgetting. Both menus offer about the same number of pieces they said which is 20 pieces. We split a $200 bottle of sake. We had said we wanted one more so around $100 since we were paying so much for the food and the guy pressured a bit to increase the price point we were comfortable with and then of course when we got our bill it was on the high end. It was good. Neither of us are sale experts. It didn't blow us away but it was very tasty and had a nice velvety mouthfeel. Our favorite bites of the night were the scallop the medium fatty tuna (the second course that had fatty tuna plus the nigiri medium fatty tuna were both excellent), the tiger prawn and red snapper. We also really enjoyed the eel and mackerel, but truly there was no bad bite. I will say the wagyu and white truffle was probably my least favorite. Just didn't do it for me and that was disappointing considering that was 2 of the expensive and supplemental ingredients. The entire course was delicious. The wasabi was amazing. Doesn't even compare to the wasabi one typically gets at a sushi restaurant or take out. Dessert consisted of tomago and then some sort special melon. It kind of tasted like honeydew but was sweeter and melted in your mouth. Really yummy. I will say this restaurant doesn't give you anything besides a card for a special occasion, which is a bit of a letdown especially considering the price of both the original and super Omakase. We've been to multiple other equally and less expensive Michelin star restaurants in DC and for special occasions, they have given an additional course or small bite of something. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance was good. Great for a date night or special occasion. Intimate feeling.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

It was just alright. Yes they have a Michelin star but, believe it or not, this at the lower end of price points for Michelin starred omakase. I have been to another 1 star omakase place that was $500 per person and it was obviously much better than this place, which was $190 per person here. Still a pretty penny but of course I can't expect the same experience between the two businesses. My parents were in town and I wanted to treat them to an omakase meal and after searching around, I narrowed it down to this place for our Sunday late lunch. I wish I did not anxiously book a parking spot on Spot Hero ahead of time as there was a lot of street parking around on a Sunday like literally no one was around lol. The service was excellent. I had told the restaurant that it was my mom's birthday so they wrote her a little card and gave her a little candle with her dessert at the end (everyone gets the same dessert though so she basically didn't get anything extra for her birthday). They didn't really do any creative takes on the seafood presented, but again, this could just be me being spoiled by having experienced more expensive omakase where they did more interesting things with each dish instead of your normal slab of raw fish on some sushi rice. With tax and tip, it ended up being closer to $250 per person. I think this place was just average, like you could skip honestly. It was good but not amazing.

This is a fantastic spot for an Omakase experience, right off of the national mall near the clock tower and the Willard Hotel. You can expect an intimate experience, with fantastic flavors and a great variety of fish showcased. Make sure to get a reservation because seating is very limited and I'm not sure if they even accept walk ins. There wasn't anything I ate that I didn't love and it was such a journey of flavors either every bite. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a great place to celebrate and have a very nice evening.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Ryan S.

I have eaten at Sushi Nakazawa at least 4 or 5! times and absolutely love it. Their reservation system only allows you to make reservations for two so I usually need to call and make my reservation for one. Just called a few minutes ago and while trying to make a reservation for myself I was rudely asked if I knew that the cost of dinner was 190$. This woman presented this price like she was quite sure I was unaware and could not afford it. I have never in my life felt so disrespected. I hung up the phone, and can promise you I will never visit this restaurant again. This is not the service I would ever expect from a Michelin starred restaurant, if I am making the reservation then I promise you I know the cost and what I getting into!!

Dining at Sushi Nakazawa is an absolute masterclass in Edomae-style sushi. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Tucked inside the grand Waldorf Astoria, the setting is as high-end as the meal itself.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you are a fan of Jiro Dreams of Sushi, sitting at this counter feels like a bucket-list experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The Highlights: * The Progression: This is a pure nigiri-focused omakase (about 20 pieces). Every single bite was wonderful--the fish-to-rice ratio is mathematically perfect, and the temperature of the rice is spot on. * Standout Bites: The Hokkaido Scallop with a touch of yuzu kosho was a revelation, and the Hand-Carved Tuna courses were incredibly fatty and melt-in-your-mouth. * Presentation: The plating is minimalist and elegant. Watching the chefs' precision is half the fun; their movement is like a choreographed dance. The Critique: * Missing the Small Plates: My only real wish is that the menu included some otsumami (small cooked or raw starter plates) before diving straight into the nigiri. Most high-end omakase experiences at this price point lead with a few seasonal small bites or sashimi to set the stage, and I missed that variety here. * The "Liquid" Bill: Be prepared--the liquor and sake prices are very high. While the selection is encyclopedic and curated perfectly, the markup on drinks can easily double your bill if you aren't careful. The Verdict: Everything about the food and service is top-tier. It is a "perfect bite" kind of place. If you are a sushi purist who wants 20 rounds of elite nigiri, this is your heaven. Just be ready for a spendy night if you're ordering from the bar!

What a fantastic experience! I came here for my promotion dinner (which they congratulated me at the host stand) and had a great time. I picked the chef's omakase and it was phenomenal. There was only one course I didn't care for, it had rice, caviar that resembled boba, and some kind of white fish and tuna. Service was phenomenal, all of the servers are very knowledgeable and attentive. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The chefs counter looked cool, so I'd recommend making a reservation there![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Lauren M.

I understand why they have a Michelin star!! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service and ambiance were amazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Each course tastes so fresh and unique. My favorite was the white fish course and toro course. I'll want to come here again the next time I'm in DC.

Is the restaurant wheelchair accessible and what is the best way to park/access the restaurant with a person using a wheelchair?

I will visit DC in spring and plan to bring all family members to the restaurant. May I know if I could bring my 8 year old daughter there? Can I and she share the food? Or if there is any food for Child? Thank you!

The menu that I saw only had Omakase and maybe a few flight options like uni flight. I did not see any A la cart menu. I do not think sharing food is an option at this place. I also did not see any children in the restaurant nor did I see a…

What is the difference between sushi counter and lounge counter?

    The price lol

Is the lunch menu the same price?

How long does the counter seating last?

    Around 2 hours

    Is there outdoor/patio dining?

It's in the Trump hotel, but only access from the outside. No outdoor/patio seating available.

Does chef still wearing glove while preparing sushi? (During Covid, they were wearing thin gloves.... Taste wasn't the same)

Yes they were still all wearing black gloves when I went a month ago. Indeed taste is different and I tastes the rubber/nitrile in the rice. I suspect the vinegar in the rice somehow leach the gloves tastes into food.

I noticed counter seating is priced differently from dining room seating. Is the omakase different in the dining room vs. counter?

The dining room seating does not have all the same sushi pieces as the sushi bar. If at all possible, always sit at the bar. I believe there is only one Omakase option, but they will usually ask if you'd like to add one or two additional pieces…

    What's the parking situation?

Street parking by the Trump hotel and starbucks, it's pretty easy to get after 6pm. Pay by mobile.

I could not find the price for the omakase on Yelp nor their website.... a little info please?

Hello! The price for the Omakase at the sushi bar is $150.00 per person plus tax, beverage, and gratuity. The Omakase is $120.00 per person plus tax, beverage, and gratuity in our dining room.

Will the chef allow substitutions for shellfish allergies? Sadly, I'm allergic to crustaceans, but I love all other types of sushi/seafood.

I can't say for sure, but I'm fairly confident that they would. They had an a la carte menu for additions to the omakase, so you could probably have a duplicate course or possibly switch the shellfish for another option.…

Is this restaurant in the Trump Hotel?

It is in the same building as Trump Hotel, but another part of the building, next to Starbucks. The restaurant has a separate entrance. You do not have to set foot in the Trump Hotel to get to this restaurant.

Is there any dress code requirements?

Just don't dress like a bum.

I was impressed and by the experience and would definitely come back for a Japanese meal that did not focus solely on ramen or sushi. The ambiance is well done, and the service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and able to answer any of our questions. To share, we got the spicy salmon roll, Karaage appetizer, and eggplant cheese appetizer. The spicy tuna roll was the most lackluster of the dishes, but the fish was fresh and the portion was decent for $12. The karaage appetizer was excellent. The chicken was moist and the coating was crunchy and super hot. The eggplant cheese was a surprise highlight of the meal. Pieces of eggplant in a melted cheese bowl made of eggplant was a simple combination. That was a very pleasant mix of textures. The pork Katsu was a highlight of the meal. Unfortunately forgot to take a picture, but the coding was super crispy and the portion size was pretty solid. The Unagidon or grilled eel bowl was also very well made and tasted great with the pickled ginger and seasoning on the side. The set came with miso soup which was very nice as well. My companions also got drinks which they said were well priced and good quality. Our overall meal cost somewhere in the range of $160 before tip which was reasonable given all of the items that we got. I look forward to my next visit!

A/C was nice and cool which I appreciated but found the place to be too loud for me once it filled out with more people. Service is courteous. I ordered the tomato salad and two sushi rolls. Yes I committed the sin of ordering just sushi at a kaiseki restaurant, gasp! So I guess I did this to myself since I found the food to be just ok. The spicy tuna roll was just not happening since all they did was drizzle hot sauce over the roll. I've been noticing this more at places, can we just say tuna roll with spicy dipping sauce instead? It's a bit misleading... but I guess I'll have to make sure to ask everywhere whenever I order spicy tuna. I am a believer in that if you're eating at a good restaurant and you ordered their less popular menu item that it should still be good but in this case, Ko didn't deliver. Anyways, I didn't have much of an appetite because of the hot weather so take this review with a grain of salt but I don't plan on returning unless someone can convince me otherwise and if I do, I'm not ordering sushi here.

The layout is interesting -- there's an upstairs when you walk in, but the sushi bar and a good bit of seating are downstairs. The menu is pretty straightforward with a mix of hand rolls, appetizers, specialty rolls, nigiri/sashimi, and traditional rolls. They also have a few solid combo deals, though I usually prefer trying a variety of items instead. Service was quick, which is always appreciated at a sushi spot. We ordered a few specialty rolls, two traditional rolls, and a couple orders of sashimi, all served together on one platter. The rolls were a great size -- filling without being overly large. The sashimi was fresh, and the traditional rolls really balanced out the meal nicely. The flounder and tuna sashimi were both excellent, and the California roll made with real crab was simple, fresh, and really satisfying. The total came out somewhere in the $70 range, so after tip and splitting it between two people, it was about $40 each to try multiple rolls and sashimi. Definitely fair pricing for the quality and amount of food. This spot had been on my list for a while, so I'm glad I finally made it over. I'd recommend checking out the menu beforehand so you can go in with a game plan and try the items that stand out most to you.

Asking for details on the menu and suggestions seemed like either a burden eliciting sighs and slight eyerolls or an inability to offer any meaningful suggestions; so, alas, we were left to ourselves. The space, at least on the first floor, is tiny - just counter bar seats in front of the kitchen in a narrow rectangular room. We were excited to use this as an opportunity to learn more by watching and interacting with the cooks, but that did not occur. Without guidance, we ordered hamachi, salmon, and kampachi sashimi. The portions were generous - 5 slices of each. The salmon was buttery and the kampachi fantastic - rich and interesting flavor. The hamachi was not liked - it was streaked with some sinewy type substance that didn't help the otherwise unflavorful fish. The soba noodles came with a rich, smoky/strong fish-flavored broth that was interesting. Unfortunately, there is no gluten-free option for the broth. The yakatori skewers (only ordered because they were the only gluten-free skewers) were nothing interesting. The wine list is quite small (understandable considering the tiny size of the restaurant) and the chilled red and the Italian rose were both quite good. The pricing was reasonable in general and considering the quality of the meal and the overall experience.

The edamame was a simple,…read morewell-executed starter -- nothing fancy, but it set the tone before the real highlights arrived. The toro tacos were a standout -- rich, buttery toro paired with a crisp shell, the kind of bite that balances luxury with a little bit of fun. We rounded things out with several maki rolls, all fresh and well put together, each one distinct enough that ordering a few felt worth it rather than repetitive. Beyond the food, the service made the night -- attentive without being intrusive, which is exactly what you want for a birthday dinner. The ambience matched too: romantic, trendy, dim lighting that made it feel like an occasion without trying too hard. Great pick for a celebration -- between the toro tacos, the maki, and the overall vibe, Shoto delivered on every front.

This is not a space to grab food if you're trying to have a conversation. We often found ourselves yelling across the table and when selecting items to share we crammed ourselves on one side of the booth squishing other patrons. Otherwise this would've been a 5 star review. Our waiter was amazing, albeit a bit distracted at times because of his service area, and helped advise us on the items we were interested in. We had: Koika No Karaage - their version of calamari - 10/10 - lightly fried with the most amazing texture and paired with a yuzu mayo. For the price I wish the serving size was larger but that's my only gripe. Kani - 10/10 - snow crab with spicy mayo - 2 came with the order and they were amazing. The Japanese crest was the perfect contrast to softness of the snow crab. It was also seasoned well. Hotate Toryufu - 10/10 - the scallops melted in your mouth. Amazing. No notes. California Maki - 6/10 - my least favorite thing here. It wasn't awful but it didn't compare to the other things we had. Drinks - I WISH I could remember the name of the drink I had. Hands down one of the best drinks I've ever had and was paired with sparkling sake. Bathe me in sparkling sake, put a bottle in my casket, I want it with me forever. I would come back for sure but would opt to sit at the bar. It would definitely be easier to speak to someone sitting next to you than across from you. For the price you will not get full here but if you want to share some small bites of new food this is absolutely your spot.

The food at Sakaki is full of flavor and the prices are reasonable for the amount. I think, after being twice, that the AYCE is not as worth it for me personally because I'm not a big eater, but it's totally worth it if you want a lot of variety and you have a good appetite. I really liked the rolls in particular. The service was excellent- it was a nice balance of coming over once in a while to ask how we were doing without coming over too much. The vibes are awesome with a really nice interior- definitely a nice place to go for a date,!just to go with friends to have a nice meal, or even to grab a meal alone since the center has a large area for single seating. Fyi- for the AYCE menu, note that once you put in an order for a round, you can't order for another 10 min so be sure to order enough at a time. Also, there is a time limit to the AYCE (I think it was 90 min). This'll definitely be a place I go to regularly in the future!

I tried as much of the menu as I could and the rolls and nigiris were definitely the highlight. I wouldn't recommend the crab korokke (too liquidy, and no crab that I could taste) or the karagge - save space for other items! The AYCE is 90mins and you can order every 10 minutes from a tablet. Service was FAST, they definitely weren't playing games. The restaurant itself is also super spacious and well decorated.

Our server was attentive and helped us keep track of the time so we can put in any last minute orders for happy hour. The sugar and spice cocktail is one of my favorites in the DC area, it's perfect if you like a spicy margarita flavor. The snow king roll was my favorite (included in HH) but the surf and turf one was delicious as well. Definitely recommend the broccolini and rock shrimp to supplement your experience! I can't wait to come back.

My Hotote crudo app which should be served cold was served cold on a super hot plate which means by the time I ate it, it was thus weird hot/semi-luke warm temp and honestly, not appetizing. I tried the Moriawase after and told my server I wanted to add caviar if it was possible and since I didn't get any, I assume it is only an option for the nigiri/sashimi. Silly but no problem. I was still sooooo hungry I ordered a Surf&turf roll and it was less than appetizing. It had no flavor which was terribly unfortunate. I didn't make a review about the sake mixup or my server only to be polite but there are definitely low points, and those make the list. I hope it's better for everyone else!
