The perfect girls night or date night spot! I've been twice and the vibe of this place is amazing! It's dimly lit, such beautiful decor and on Saturday a DJ comes late night. Service is top notch and they break down the menu perfectly. The waiter was amazing and let us try some wines and sake before we ordered and gave the best recommendations on what to get. Both times I've loved the hand rolls and the sushi rolls were great! Prices can be a bit steep here but I think it's worth it for a special occasion or treat yourself kind to night. I went to this place on a Saturday for a night out with friends. It was a fun place to get dressed up. The vibe was great. It's a place with brick walls everywhere and a great vibe. The moment we entered, we felt welcome and the waiter provided some wonderful suggestions for us. We shared a lot of different sushi and each had our favorite. We shared the salmon lovers roll, crunchy salsa roll, garlic butter scallops, edamame and tuna appetizer. Save this place for a quiet dinner for two... not a celebration. We had a party of 10 for a birthday with a 7:30 reservation. Before we were even seated, staff tried to seat me to the wrong table with a group I did not know. They apologized and offered me a drink at the bar (but turns out it wasn't on the house). The birthday guest had arranged custom menus and noted the group's food allergies with the restaurant weeks ahead of time. Our waiter had no idea any of that existed. After 20 minutes waiting for drinks and another stretch sorting out the menu situation, we were starving by the time food started arriving: vegans first at 9:10, the rest of us at 9:30. Two hours after sitting down. We left at 11 PM and honestly I was still hungry, the five course prix fixe menu was not very filling. The food was very good, as was the quality, and the presentation was lovely. But the service was a mess from start to finish... no coordination, no follow-through, very little accountability. I've had much better experiences here with smaller groups. For a large party or a special occasion, look elsewhere. read more

I'll lead by saying it was on the pricier end for the chefs pics and signature dishes but the rolls and smaller dishes are reasonably priced. The monster quad (and I do hope I recall that as the name of the bowl pictured correctly) and the creamy scallop roll were absolutely delicious and prob my faves. It's hard to pick a favorite in general as nothing fell short of expectations and I would 100% return because the options seem endless. I have been a huge fan of the Yume restaurant for years now. Kyojin is all about great vibes, decor and ambience. There is a DJ playing on the weekends and the food here is next level. I stopped by recently with some family. We ordered everything from the chirashi bowl, the Monster quad, toro tartare, lemon shooters, and the a5 Wagyu bowl. Some of our favorite rolls include the a5 Wagyu, scallop sunlight, and the Yume roll. All of the fish was fresh and delicious. Service here is top notch. We made reservations way in advance. Our server and the bartenders were attentive. Dining here comes at a premium cost. If you want a more private quiet dining spot this may not be it. Easily the best upscale sushi I've had in the states. It was fresh and the flavors were layered. Kyojin knows how to do FANCY. 5 stars because sushi was all a hit. The pasta dish was not. Service was a little stiff but the quality of the food made up for it. The location is right in the heart of all things popular--Georgetown. What you are paying for is for the vibes and spot being in Georgetown. Kyojin has a cool atmosphere and a solid concept, but the food didn't fully live up to expectations for me. Everything was decent, yet nothing really stood out, especially compared to other sushi spots. I normally really love sushi but I feel like some of the food choices didn't make sense or wasn't fully fleshed. We had an incredible experience at Kyojin! I brought my family members from out of town and they were so impressed from the start with the atmosphere. Jessica did a wonderful job of explaining the menu and making suggestions based on our individual tastes (and we had a lot of particular tastes at our table). She was also incredibly attentive and quick to check in on us throughout the meal despite having a busy section. Everything she suggested we absolutely loved. I absolutely love Kyojin. If you want good food, good drinks and good vibes head here immediately. Kyojin's space is beautiful, modern and upscale. You walk into what feels like a dimly lit lair that opens up into a vibrant bar area along with different rooms that have plenty of seating for dining. Every room has a unique vibe that adds to the overall ambiance of the space. There's also a room where you can watch your food being prepared. It's a perfect place for a date night, family night or hanging out with friends. As upscale as it may seem, it's still a pretty casual place so all are welcome! The drinks are strong, creative and delightful and the sushi is top notch. I enjoyed everything. Our server was very helpful and friendly and did a great job with helping us navigate the menu. The only annoying thing is trying to get there. It's located on a narrow one way cobble stone road behind one of the main roads in Georgetown so parking can be tough and if you ride share your driver may have some trouble navigating. The sushi was really fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was uptempo and loud, we were seated right next to a DJ. We traveled in the day we visited and needed to find something open late night so we weren't as dressed up or prepared for the lively environment. It's a super cute spot for a girls night or date night (it's loud though, so don't expect to converse much) My rolls: Scallop Sunlight Roll - I was intrigued by the kiwi on top so wanted to give this a try. I enjoyed it!! The spicy tuna was fresh and had a decent amount of spice to it. Crazy Monkey Roll - the lavender smoked salmon was amazing. Highly recommend. It's pricey, but high quality sushi, all was well except for the waitress mixed up the roll my friend ordered and there was like a $40 difference between the roll she wanted and was was ordered. Really awesome sushi experience in Georgetown! The restaurant is gorgeous with its modern decor and exposed brick walls. It has a chic lounge-like feel to it. The cocktails are great, and they also have some unique beers on the menu. I had the samurai heat tequila cocktail. And I tried a matcha IPA. We tried a variety of offerings including miso soup, oysters, sashimi salad, nigiri and sushi rolls. My favorites were the creamy scallop roll and the green river roll. The service was good! The prices are expensive even by DC standards. Cocktails $19-20, Beers $13-15, and rolls vary in price quite a bit! I would definitely come back. First the DJ is too loud. We were seated right next to him. I felt like I was in a cellar. My clothes were going to get soiled. Food was ok. The box came out. That was good salmon on ice. Again it all came out at once fast and slammed down. I said something but was ignored. Bathroom have urine all over the floors. Felt extremely rushed by our server. Slammed drinks down and no etiquete. Food was good but would not recommend a waitress who isn't ready to tell us about the menu, has no patience and was inconsiderate about a dairy allergy. Absolutely LOVED this place! The service was amazing. I'm a big sushi fan and the fish was fresh, as well as the scallops. The rolls had the perfect fish to rice ratio. Each bite was an experience and all the flavors paired perfectly with each other. The monkfish tower was delectable, the monkfish liver was buttery and melted in your mouth, and the pairing with the uni and yuzu ice was phenomenal. Ambience was great, space is very clean and well decorated. I'm a fan of Omakase so I'm always on the lookout for high-quality sushi. The rolls and sushi dinner here were quite good, none of the fish in the sushi dinner were stringy. While the Green Day roll was recommended, I thought it was quite unpleasant in terms of mouth feel... each piece way too big and I've never had cooked scallops that still had all of its accessory meat around it. Yusuzukuri style with lavender smoked salmon - tasty with nice subtle lavender flavor... Lavender smoked salmon - very smooth, rich, and tasty Otoro from Japan - fatty and good just like buttery. I think this is my favorite! Straight up otoro always is the best even than flavorful sashimi. Seared foie gras nigiri (with salmon belly and sea scallop) - excellently seared and soft/fatty rich flavors. We were somewhat hesitant of scallops, but we enjoyed them more than the salmon belly. I went here for a date night, and it was absolutely perfect! The low lighting and lively atmosphere, complete with a DJ, gave it a fun, upscale vibe--it felt more like New York or Miami than DC. The Georgetown location is also a great bonus. The highlight of the night was the creamy scallop roll--it was incredible and definitely something I'll be coming back for. Love this restaurant! We go to the other restaurant from the same owner (Yume in Arlington) and this one is just as good! I always get the chirashi bowl from both locations and the quality is so consistent. So glad they opened up in this area because it's the perfect meal after a long day of shopping :) I would definitely recommend you make a reservation as they do get quite busy. The service is great here! One time I came here with my partner and they got a drink that they didn't like, our server did not charge us for the drink. I had initially chosen Kyojin based on the reviews about the quality of food and vibes. However, I was thoroughly disappointed in my experience here. My party had a waitress who was very nice but in the beginning when we asked for her recommendations she gave us a very rehearsed speech that was incomprehensible. In the beginning she would check up on us frequently, but once we ordered she was no where to be seen. The main reason I am only giving this place 2 stars is because the price and portions are insane. First of all, the mark up for alcohol was unbelievable. Sake that I found for $30 online were marked up 5x their price. I understand there is always a mark up with alcohol, but that is a little ridiculous. I was tricked into ordered a bottle of still water. The waitress asked my party if we would like still or sparkling. As this was our first time we did not know to request tap and was charged for the still bottle of water. While the sushi quality was good and it was tasty the amount for a "roll" was nothing short of disappointing. One "roll" comprised of 5 pieces and is not what I would call a roll. We had ordered 4-6 rolls for our party of 4 and after finishing no one was full. Overall, I would not recommend this place if you are hungry or if you do not already know what you want to order. I will definitely be going to other places in DC. read more

My thoughts about this place range from two to four stars so I ultimately settled on three. Let me explain. I recently came for dinner on a Friday night as a party of four. The place is very nicely decorated. I arrived first and instead of seating me, they told me to sit at the bar and wait for the rest of my party. Fine. When we were seated, our server gave us menus, came back to check on us a few times, and asked if we'd like recommendations for starters. Sure. She starts going down a prepared monologue about the various appetizers, how they're prepared, and what her favorites are. Although she went on for what felt like three minutes, I think I only understood 15 seconds worth of what she said. Now to be clear, I come from a family of refugees and immigrants, the majority of whom do not speak English well enough to attempt working as a waiter. So I am quite sympathetic to English ability and accents. Our server had an accent but her English was fluent. My only issue here is that she spoke way too fast and had no situational awareness as to whether we were following what she was saying. She came back later and offered to give recommendations for main plates. We declined. She slyly upsold us on water, asking if we wanted sparkling or still. Although there was a tap water option, she brought out and opened a $9 bottle of imported still water, which we found annoying. As we looked at the menu, we saw wine bottles that we could buy for $20-30 ourselves, but marked up to $80+ here in the restaurant. Ridiculous. Now, as for the food, I have to admit it was delicious. You won't usually get this sort of sushi at most other restaurants. That's not necessarily praise, although I did enjoy the taste and quality of what we had. What I mean is they go out of their way here to make "upscale" sushi with gold flakes and truffles and completely unnecessary things like that. But to each their own. What ruined the dining experience for me though, was their deceptive pricing. They have a set menu for $100 a person, some expensive appetizers mains, and a wide selection of seemingly reasonable sushi rolls priced at around $13-$16 per roll. We ordered five rolls for the table to start. Again, everything tasted good and came with embellished dipping sauces as alternatives to the standard soy sauce... but the portion sizes were very lacking. Typically a standard sushi roll will come with eight pieces or so. Here each "roll" had like four or five pieces. There was an uni roll for $25 that only had four pieces!!! We ended up paying $100 for each of us to have five pieces of sushi. That's really ridiculous. We were still hungry but felt a bit played so we closed out and went elsewhere for a more filling dinner. read more

Boyfriend and I came by for dinner because we had a deal on inKind and figured why not try a fancier sushi spot which we normally wouldn't go to. Stepping in, it's a gorgeous restaurant. Definitely a great spot for an intimate date or even bringing friends/family. Our server was super chatty - she explained all the special dishes of the day. It felt a bit like she was trying to get us to order the really expensive stuff - but I guess that's the kind of place this is. Specializes in the truffle sauces, the caviar, the uni. We came in planning to get a couple rolls but we decided to splurge a bit more because we felt like we had to ball out a bit. So we got: miso butter scallop nigiris ($25), spicy toro uni roll ($25), pinkie rolls ($18), Jeff roll ($13), salmon lover roll ($13), and the creamy raw scallop roll ($13). Our favorite bites were the miso butter scallop nigiri (the truffle sauce was tasty and a bit sweet and the scallop was really fresh), and the spicy toro uni roll (there was a lot going on here, but the Hokkaido uni was fresh and so creamy and sweet). I just wish they gave more than 4 pieces for these, but that's probably wishful thinking. My boyfriend really liked the pinkie roll, for me it was good but not amazing. Was pretty for the pics though. I wish it came with 6 pieces instead of 5 because it's annoying to figure out who gets the extra piece. Same with the salmon lover roll - it needs 6 pieces instead of 5. I liked the mango on it, but wish the salmon pieces were bigger. The Jeff roll was probably the tastiest "regular" roll, BUT the seared salmon on top was SOOOOO thin. It was almost insulting how thin it was! Literally used a potato peeler for that tiny slice. Most of the roll was avocado. Although some bites were tasty, I probably won't be back because I prefer my sushi to have more fish in them, especially for such a high price. read more

It's been a few months since we visited this place but I was stuck not knowing how to rate and review them. Ascetically, this place is Gorgeous! I had to look around and remind myself I was in DC. The place gave me Vegas and NYC appeal, definitely looks beautiful. Host was a gem! Server was awesome! Everything from the ambiance, entrance welcome, bartender, server, food was great! Then came management and it took a turn. Seating is really crammed, so you're super close to other guest who are visiting. Beside us was a party of women who had ordered a bottle of wine and were finishing up their meal. I'm BIG on management coming to the table and checking in. (Higher end places have this top tier service.) When she approached the table of women I was so delighted. When we connected eyes, she did not smile, she did not speak, she literally rolled her eyes away. I'm not a customer who has ever had a race issue but I could not help but to see that the tables she visited were all white American. I likely would have brushed this situation off but my partner noticed it too and we spent our last part of dinner talking about this off putting situation. Diversity of their staff was a mix but it left me wondering and feeling different. Everything we had was fantastic! Portion sizes were fair. I would definitely give this place another try. I would just hope the white female manager was not there. Wouldn't want to relive our experience with her, just the food part! Overall, all my DC Yelpies MUST try! read more

Sorry to be like this but this is a review for all the people who love classic sushi like omakase style. This is a place for people who love rolls and theatrical nonsense like adding gold flakes and caviar to everything but doesn't actually add to the taste and flavor of the fish. If you are like me, you will hate the food here, it's a huge menu (not a good sign) with just different combos of uni, gold flakes, and caviar which makes it really expensive for no reason. This is for the FALL TASTING MENU which is a 10/10. I usually find a tasting menu has hits and misses but Kyojin's was all hits. Ambiance is really nice and staff were also really nice and helpful. Food came out fairly quickly. The gyozas were delicious and the baby clams were really flavorful. The award winning roll is AMAZING and all the components go perfectly together. The mini chirasi bowl and mini poke bowl are so very fresh and the tuna belly sashimi was so perfectly balanced and flavorful. Drinks were good and specially priced with the fall tasting menu. As a solo diner, I've had a handful of the most pleasant meals in DC and Kyojin ranks up there as one of the best for Japanese cuisine. Great quality fish, interesting use of smoke and salt, and an excellent tasting menu rounded out by equally excellent service (shout out to Abby). Stopped by for restaurant week. It's a super cool place with super attentive staff. It's been on my list so was excited for their restaurant week menu. I started with the tuna tartare which was juicy and was wonderfully spicy . I upgraded to get the spicy toro roll which was by far the best thing to get. For five dollars extra its definitely worth it. The third course was the surf and turf. These were two very delicious bites. I will say it is small though so come here if you are not super hungry. My only concern was that the server was not honest The problem was we asked how many rolls come and he said 2-6 depending on the roll so when we ordered some of the sashimi he left out that it was priced for one and brought more than one without checking with us first. Worked with the restaurant to hold a last minute, large group dinner here. The staff was pretty responsive and accommodating, and I appreciated them for being able to put together a space for me so quickly. I would describe the restaurant as being pretty "vibey". It sort of feels like you are in an underground cave when you walk in. There's a large bar area with seating, as well as plenty of seating at a separate sushi counter, where you can watch the chefs prepare fresh sushi right in front of you. All in all, I have no major complaints about the night. The server was friendly and accommodating, the cocktails were interesting and tasty, and the food was good, even if the portion sizes were a bit small.
