Well, what can I say? I live in SoCal, so I'm spoiled when it comes to sushi. I was in Eugene with some friends, when someone made the suggestion to grab some sushi for lunch. I reeled initially because: 1.) If it's not AYCE, then I can't f**k with it. 2.) I eat a LOT, so if I'm paying per plate/item, then I can easily eat $100 worth all by myself. 3.) Sushi in Oregon can't possibly compare to my favorite spots down south. None-the-less, my friend's boyfriend suggests Sushi Island. The huge happy hour banner outside attracts my attention. $1.50 for every item pulled off of the belt. F**kin' A, now that's what I'm talking about. Happy hour is from 2:00PM - 4:00PM. Upon walking in, you can see the whole layout of the place. The sushi belt goes around two rows of tables and back to the sushi chefs, the biggest sushi belt that I've seen thus far. There are tables on the side away from the belt, so I guess if you don't grab a seat at the belt, you'll have to go up and grab your items. I can't really rate the service because we pretty much sat down and served ourselves. This place has plastic covers on the plates, which is smart because it keeps the flies off, as well as those nasty ass customers who cough and sneeze in front of the belt. So here's the real test. . . My girlfriend and I try the salmon sushi. It's a little warm and extra slimy, but . . . for a buck fifty, we can't really complain. The rice portions are a little big, but at least the slices of fish are reasonably proportioned to them. The rolls. . . they're okay. Really, what makes the rolls okay is that they only cost $1.50. Really hard to go wrong with that. I mean, you get what you pay for, and I strongly believe in portions and getting full, and during the happy hour at Sushi Island, this can be accomplished without emptying out your whole wallet. Dish of the day: Surprisingly, their calamari is firm with a slight crunch to its texture, without being too rubbery or too hard. In a bunghole, I'd gladly hit up this spot for a minor sushi fix, but only during their happy hour. My girlfriend and I had six plates each which came out to about eighteen bucks. So figure, by myself, I could have easily been satisfied, spending less than thirty dollars, which is usually how much AYCE sushi costs. I didn't get to try their cheesecake, but it's an item on the belt via card. read more

The biggest problem with Sushi Island is that there is no emphasis on freshness, which I'd say is rule #1 of good sushi. During busy times, they pre-make plates of sushi and stack them on a table in the food prep area, meaning that even when they put those "new" plates out on the belt, they've been sitting around for a long time. I'm not sure how that meets food safety regulations, but I do stay away from anything raw here. The only way to get freshly assembled sushi is to order it, but even then the ingredients taste cheap and unfresh. To mask the poor quality of ingredients, they overdo the sauces and serve an abundance of things drenched in sweet and/or fatty sauce. There are times when nearly everything on the belt is deep-fried and covered in sauce. Happy hour is a good deal if you're craving fast-food junky sushi (which, hey, sometimes I do) but be prepared for mobs of people. There's a long wait on weekends. Other times of day, it's overpriced for the quality. read more

The food on the belt doesn't have much variety and tends to be cold and chewy. Their salmon nigiri have only half of what other places have in terms of actual fish and fall apart if you even try to dip them in so sauce. Their cucumber salad was soft and chewy, not fresh and crunchy. Their bathrooms and the hallway and curtain to them are dirty. Spend the extra money and go somewhere nicer, unless you like subpar sushi. read more

My Husband and I love coming here. The Menu has recently changed, adding new items but increasing the prices. Some of the Sushi I used to frequently get, has increased by about $1.00. I can understand if this is temporary. Fish prices can change depending on the Season, so they probably had to adjust the price to avoid losing money. read more

I really wanted to like this, but was so disappointed. Service was a bit slow, but friendly enough.My son had the ebi and it was just ok. I had an order of rolls and they were poorly put together and fell apart when I tried to pick them up. I then had the chicken karage bento box. The chicken was one of the worst things I have had in awhile. It was hard, dry, and flavorless. My boyfriend's Terriyaki chicken was pretty good, so I made him share. I gave an extra star for not making us ill, which with the amount of items on the conveyor belt seemed possible. If you want pseudo Japanese food covered up with mayo-based sauces then this is the place. Freshness is not a priority. read more

if you enjoy good sushi don't go here. my family and I were recommended to a chinese restaurant down the street, but being closed for remodelling, it redirected us to this place. sushi island. chinese run, it's clean and the servers are sweet. however, as cool as happy hour sounds, 1.50 a plate also means that they only serve what's worth 1.50 or less on the "conveyer belt" part of the menu. skeptical of the fish i might find here, i ordered the tempura udon. in the menu, this was described as a "light, clear broth." this description was backhanded when the waitress came out with a bowl of milkiness, just overflowing with the smell of sesame oil, and accompanied by a shrimp, and a handful of strange nuggets, all covered in some layer of hard, orange crust. if this is some new funky style of tempura, i'll stop at this sample, thank you. on the other hand, they did give a decent helping of it, whatever it was. it wasn't what i wanted, but it wasn't terrible either. we also ordered a sashimi plate, some rolls, and a bento. for the most part, it was all average. the fish was skimpy and they never gave us plates or dippng dishes, but i guess ya can't expect anything more when you walk into a mall sushi boat style restaurant. read more

It opened recently right next to Fred Meyer. We were hoping this place would be a casual go-to dinner place for us since we love sushi. It is clean. That is THE only positive thing I can say about this place. The food was AWFUL. I hate to give a negative review to a new restaurant, but my goodness. It was just not edible. The sushi rice was all pasty and unseasoned, the fish didn't taste like anything. The fried calamari was cold and chewy and tasted like fried plastic. The price per plate was much too high for what they serve ($1.50 to $3.50). My husband who is usually very forgiving was the most upset of all. He really hated the food. You can try them yourself, but we certainly will not go back. read more

Sushi was good and price was fair. Service on the other hand, could of easily been much better. We walked in and was not greeted by anyone so we proceeded to sit down at the rotating bar. As soon as we pull out a chair a server from across the room very rudely yells "those seats are reserved!"--well how the hell were we suppose to know that? Could have told us a bit more nicely, geez. Anyway we move to a different place and proceed to eat. No major complaints from then on, a different server was very attentive in taking our drink orders. There was a lot of sushi going around, probably in preparation for the large group with reserved seats, but...I don't ever think they showed up. Karma folks. read more

Two words: Happy Hour! It's the only way to go at Sushi Island. Every day from 2-4 all plates are only $1.50! Last year was my first time trying sushi from a conveyer belt and although I was skeptical at first, I have to admit it's one of the best discoveries I've made! I have trouble with anyone ranking this place below three stars. The fish is quite fresh and there are many inexpensive options. I enjoyed what I had quite thoroughly. A nice thing is that you have the option of ordering off the menu or off the conveyor belt. I ordered the uni (2 orders- it was fresh and delicious) as well as tobiko with quail egg (my favorite- they did it perfectly) AND ate quite a few plates off the conveyor belt AND Dixie and I both had an iced tea and the bill was less than 40 bucks. I can blow through $40 in sushi without blinking an eye. The service was very attentive and nice, the prices are cheap and even cheaper during happy hour (1.50 a plate, 2-4pm daily), and it's right next to skip's records. What's not to love read more

Our family comes here often. The food is good, the service is always friendly and there's something for everyone. Honestly, we love the calamari and the variety that is on the belt is always good. We do order off the menu from time to time and it always comes quickly. One of our favorite things is the large Asahi beer you can get! Goes great with all types of sushi.. I am a regular at Sushi Island on Patterson by campus. Thinking I would get the same experience from this one I was sorely disappointed. We stood awkwardly at the entrance for 10 minutes before they even acknowledged our presence. Sadly the customer service wasn't the only disappointment, the sushi is awful. Good selection/variety on moving belt, especially for the price. My family of 4 ate with tip for $35 and we had 12 different plates between us. Good rolls and good seaweed salad! Beer selection is poor, but that's not really what you go to a sushi bar to drink. read more

Today was my first visit to Sushi Island after I heard about their great happy hour. We put our name on the list and waited, thinking it would only be a couple minutes since several groups had just finished up. Well, we waited and waited and nothing was happening. All of the staff were ignoring the tables that needed clearing and the groups of people lining up for spots - basically, the place looked disgusting, the customer service was non-existent, and it made me wonder whether the kitchen was hygienic at all, since the dining area certainly wasn't. I mean its ok. The 2-4pm happy hour deal just causes way too many random Eugene people to flood the place at that time. There is sometimes only 2-5 different items on the conveyor belt. kinda mass produced. the sushi rice, which, by the way, should be the most important part of the sushi, is sometimes stale. I've been here twice and its just ok. I wouldn't try to impress a girl on a date here though. Its cheap but that doesn't mean its going to make you feel better. Took the bride to Sushi Island on Saturday for the Happy Hour (which runs from 2:00 to 4:00 every day). $1.50 per plate. Great combinations... and killer price. Wife did the Shrimp nigri sushi times several, and a couple of California rolls. I had some toro rolls, a tempura roll, a roll with tempura asparagus and ... and ... and .... in all 10 plates, $15. I have went a few times during happy hour. During that time you can expect the place to be packed, but they get people seated as fast as they can, so the wait time is usually around 5-10 mins. I enjoy the selection, but I feel they could put more out. My main complaint is that it takes too long for the waiter to come back if you want to order something off the menu, and because you rarely see them, your water typically doesn't get refilled. Regardless, it's a really good deal if you go during happy hour, and it's worth being a little thirsty. read more

Gross. I do not care for imitation crab and this place was full of it. The only appetizing rolls on the belt were the ebi rolls. I ordered a roll off the menu and it had little to no flavor. I guess you get what you pay for. read more

The belt is a cool option and good $ but everything on there is mediocre. at best. The bento boxes are only $6.75 for a one item witch us great but the food...mhh ordered one roll that had lobster and it was hard as a rock. Not pleased. read more

We try to hit Happy Hour once a week here. Superb calamari, nice and fresh. Also like the Tempura California Roll, especially if you catch it when it's hot. Plenty of different dishes to try, and the Happy Hour price cannot be beat. read more

Great place if you go to happy hour at 2. It's hard to get a seat but it's worth the struggle. There are so many different types going by and I still haven't tried it all. I often go to Sushi Island because it is near my house and relatively inexpensive, but it is a pretty mediocre. In all fairness, it is what you would expect for the price. My one suggestion to the owners is to lighten up the udon. I LOVE udon and have had it at dozens of places and it should not be pure oil. Use less oil and let the broth shine with its flavors. I wouldn't recommend the udon unless you like super heavy meals. read more

Definitely the best sushi happy hour I've been to in Eugene ($1.50/plate), and I'm not sure I'd go not during their happy hour, as they're a little expensive, and the benefit of the happy hour is the "expensive" plates are the same as the "cheap plates"....enjoyable to sit at the rotating sushi bar. I go here twice to three times a week. The food is amazingly fresh, the service is so good that I tip 40 to 50 percent. The calamari should be eaten hot, right out of the cooker. We always order it and it is the best we have ever had. (We orginated out of SF.) Just be sure to eat it hot, otherwise all calamari toughens up. I don't particularly like the fake crab, but the servers never pretend that it is anything other than surimi. We don't even think about going to any other fast food, I have ordered almost everything off the menu. read more

Happy hour has the best sushi prices anywhere in Eugene. I love that I can try everything I want to! Each plate is $1.50 during happy hour (2-4pm every day). The plate mostly have 4 pieces of sushi, although some have 6 small pieces. Each day seems to have certain items on the conveyor belts, so you may not see exactly what you expected from a previous visit. I like trying new things, so I love that you are never sure what they will serve. If you've never been there, it is truly worth the trip to west Eugene. read more

We just left the sushi island. The food wasn't bad , what we had. Absolutely no customer service. We couldn't get a napkin or even a person to ask if we wanted anything off the menu. The best part was I found a piece of mystery paper in the saki. We left hungry. Good luck getting a glass of water as well. The sushi station is on 5th. We will continue to go there. We wanted to try a new place. We were wrong. read more
