Sushi Jako is hands down the best sushi in Harrisonburg! Lee is the only chef and also the owner. He uses fresh quality seafood shipped in twice a week. I hidden Harrisonburg gem! I had a friend visiting town and we wanted to find someplace different and away from the Graduation crowds so we tried Jako. Man we are glad we did! The service was friendly and knowledgeable the food was fresh and delicious. We dove into the Sushi Boat A, the server said it would come out in stages which was PERFECT! It allowed us to take our time and enjoy each "course" without being stuffed or struggling to ensure every last morsel was consumed. We were driving on the road for 9 hours on our way to visit family and were looking for a great sushi place to stop. I jumped on maps to search for the highest rated sushi places on our route, and this one came up with reviews like, "the best sushi in Harrisonburg," so I figured we couldn't go wrong. We were famished and ready to eat a great meal and get back on the road. We have frequented many sushi restaurants in our constant travels, and this - by far - was the WORST sushi restaurant experience we have encountered. I was told they ran out of salmon and could not fulfill my salmon lovers order. My bf also ordered two rolls with salmon. He asked if they could still do his rolls and they replied yes. Then, the server came back 5 minutes later to tell him that they could not use smoked salmon and it would have to be regular salmon - how does that make sense? The first thing to come out was a miso soup, and for a four dollar soup, it was water and salt with nothing in it. Sushi was good but we waited about 50 minutes. Then the server was more interested in cleaning up the kitchen than she was with waiting tables. We walked up to the front to pay the check and there was about 2 lbs of salmon still in the window. This restaurant isn't that large and on a Saturday evening, they stopped taking parties at 730 before closing at 9. My husband and I were waiting and so was another couple. I'd say 6 couples were turned away after they put the closed sign up and switched off the open light. It was Valentine's Day weekend so idk if this is typical on the weekends Service was a little slow as I think there was only one waiter but he quickly took our orders and brought salad and soup as we waited for our entrees. My boyfriend and I went here for dinner and everything was yummy! My boyfriend accidentally order the wrong sushi and realizing that it was our mistake was just going to leave it, which is when the sushi artist came out asking if something is wrong and my boyfriend had said he order it by accident since he hates tofu and he was nice enough to take it off our bill. We would come back again. Service and food were very good. The waitress and chef were extremely busy but still remained polite and professional. Reviews extremely misleading. I am so disappointed and upset that i wasted my special dinner on this place. Got the green dragon and either the seaweed or tempura on the shrimp was extremely stale/hard. There was also the smallest amount of crab in the roll. The Beef yaki soba had 2 small piece of beef and that was it. Fried rice was nothing special. Could've made something extremely similar with microwaved frozen vegetables, rice and soy sauce. read more

The sushi was good quality, filling, and the price was good, but the variety was a bit lacking. My husband had a hard time finding something to order since he doesn't like avocado (and we didn't want to ask for special orders), and there are almost no rolls with cream cheese which my husband and the kids like. There were a total of three rolls with cream cheese, and two were the same: cream cheese, avocado, and salmon. The only difference is in one the salmon is smoked. Also, the soft drinks are sold by the can, which some my find irritating. Anyways, I would give the menu a look before you go to make sure they have something you'd like, and if they do, it will be delicious. read more

I'm not gonna lie, my standards for sushi and Japanese food in general are pretty high, so you might want to keep this in mind as you read my review. If this place were located closer to the DC area, it would probably be rated a little lower, but I think it deserves a little boost for being pretty good even though it's a little further away. I doubt there are many really good Asian food sources in Harrisonburg, so I guess this one is worth a try. Food: Got the chicken tempura appetizer to start, and it was just okay. It kind of just reminded me of chicken fingers, and they were a little dry. I'm glad the serving size was decent for sharing though. It was nice to munch on these throughout the meal. My boyfriend and I ordered Sushi Combo B to share, and we both still got soup and salad, which was pretty nice. The miso was alright, but the salad dressing was pretty good. The sushi itself was also just okay. It's not too pricey, but there was nothing really special about it. Even the fatty, "higher quality" pieces were not as flavorful as I would usually hope for them to be. Overall, I think this place has a lot of potential, but they might benefit from getting more nicer cuts of fish. If you think this place is good already, perhaps cheaper sushi places in closer to DC would blow your mind. Service: There were only one or two other tables taken in the restaurant, but I feel like our server didn't visit our table as often as I would have liked. He didn't seem very busy, so I'm not really sure what was going on there. It also took a little longer than expected to actually recive our food.
