Cute spot. Staff was friendly. You help yourself at the kiosk and then grab a seat. You grab your own drinks. I didn't like how the ice was a scooper and it's out for everyone to use, and we all know not everyone washes hands properly. Your food is brought to your table. We ordered the bao buns. I didn't realize you put it together, but the meat was tender and bun itself was so soft. I feel the meat was missing flavor, even with the sauce they provide. We also had the fried chicken, it's a cutlet that's cut up. Wish it was crispier. Last but not least, we had the corn cheese dip - I think that's what it was called. We found this place in Harrisonburg, Virginia by accident and it was fortuitous! It's an Asian fusion type of place that is heavy on Korean food. We started off with deep fried Mandu that were filled with pork. They were prepared very well - slightly crispy on the outside. The sweet soy sauce paired well with them. For our entrees we had Japchae with beef bulgogi which had a wonderful flavor and was also prepared very well. We also had the Bibimbap with bulgogi beef. It was also very tasty - beef, bean sprouts, pickled cabbage, cucumbers and carrots with lettuce and white rice and a fried egg on top. Yes they have a food truck, known to be parked at various locations around the 'Burg, but I am hear to share about the brick and mortar. And from the outside, it appears to not be much more than that. No bright colors or flashing lights. No sign spinner on the sidewalk or loud music to capture your attention. And when you leave here, you'll understand this is just their humble pride in knowing that if you came for Mashita then you don't need to be lured in. When there's kimchi fries and and vegan bap and a brisket sandwich all on the same menu, there is bound to be an experience like no other. Of course you can't forget about the sake cocktails and the panna cotta. But with all the great food, what about the space in which you partake it? Well no worries on finding a seat as there are plenty both inside the building and outside on the patio. On those breezy Autumn evenings, it is where you want to be as you end the day or week. To top it off, the team here are some of the friendlist folks you'll meet in the area. Just one example was when a bee shared my infinity for my kimchi fries and kept flying towards them (and my face) repeatedly. Before I could even ask someone offered to setup a table inside. Positives first : it's super cute. I can tell why college kids like it. There are game consoles on the back wall in the bar area. The waitress was nice. She offered her favorites although she went so fast I only heard two things. Negative.... The kimchi ball things : not good and not what I expected from the description Japache: my partner in crime didn't like it. It came with very little meat and was coated in a really sweet sauce. It reminded me of someone drowning noodles in plum sauce. The "buns" are not buns. It's more like a thick tortilla. I assumed it was like a traditional pork bun. The bulgogi was lacking flavor. I don't understand what the hype is unless this is someone's first experience with Korean food. If you have had Korean food before. Maybe after a few drinks this could be considered really good food. There was also no sauce brought to our table for either of our main dishes, but again, that's entirely irrelevant. The four reviews I had posted via google before reviewing your restaurant, were two for used car dealerships that lied to me about multiple issues with their vehicles and even the availability and had me drive 4 hours round trip instead of just telling the truth. The other one was a Christian food bank that was judgmental towards my friend when she needed help from them. And the fourth one was a good review for a place that deserved it. Your accusations are as absurd as your ability to create decent Korean "inspired" food. I have no vendetta against your restaurant, I just have a problem with people charging other people money for food that is in no way decent or worth the cost. When it is not enjoyable, not well executed and flavorless You should be ashamed about charging people for it. When you are a Korean "inspired "restaurant and you can't even execute green tea properly, you have a problem. I said the manager and owner don't care because when I spoke to your server about the problems with our meal, appetizer to main course, she said she was so sorry, but the owner had made some changes to the menu recently, and lots of people were complaining about it. Which means that you, the owner, intentionally downgraded the menu, knows people are unhappy with it and still does not care. Your response to my review proves it. I'm not someone who typically writes negative reviews, but after my experience this evening, I feel it's important to share. I've ordered takeout from Mashita many times and have always enjoyed it, but tonight was my first time dining-in since they switched to kiosk ordering and eliminated table service. I don't have an issue with either of those changes; however, the overall experience was disappointing. Despite selecting dine-in, our food was served in takeout containers. In the past, you would get a tray of sauces for the table, but now they only give just one small container and charge for any additional or different sauces. While the food itself was still good, the ingredients didn't seem as fresh as usual, and the chips served with our appetizer were extremely salty. The main reason for this review, however, is what happened toward the end of our meal. We heard noise coming from the ceiling, and shortly after, a small bird came out of the wall and flew across the dining area. Moments later, we saw a rat or mouse (it was hard to tell which it was, but we could clearly see the tail and body) emerge from the same corner in the ceiling. It appeared to drop one or two droppings on the floor before disappearing back into the wall. This was incredibly unsettling. Mashita used to be one of my favorite restaurants in town, but until this issue is addressed, I won't be returning. I simply can't feel comfortable eating in a space where there may be rodents or contamination. I truly hope this is taken seriously and resolved, as I'd love to be able to enjoy this restaurant again. read more

Our second visit. This is a fun, funky place with an upbeat vibe and a creative menu. Lots of small plates and apps, some authentic Korean some I'm not so sure. Great steamed buns with different sauces, eggplant katsu with spicy cabbage, beef bulgogi, tempura shrimp..all delicious. Went one evening after work with a couple peers. As it was after 5pm, the small parking lot across the street had several spots available as well as on street parking spots available. I was quickly greeted upon entering and shown to the table my peers were already seated and waiting. We ordered an appetizer of Brussels sprouts (amazing!!!). I ordered the kimchi stew which was sooo good! It was a huge portion that came with a side of rice. The stew was spicy, yet flavorful, with bits of tofu, spinach, and beef. I have heard of the AMAZING steam buns at Mashita so I decided to stop by for takeout. They have lots of indoor seating both in the front half and back half of the restaurant with unique murals all over the walls that definitely create a nice vibe! The service here was so friendly and welcoming! As I waited for my takeout order, they offered me a seat and water! The service was quick, I had my food in about 10/15 min. I ordered the Fried Mandu Dumplings and those were tasty! It came with six dumplings and dipping sauce. If you are a fan of fried and crunchy dumplings, you need to try these! I also ordered two steamed buns, one bulgogi and one brisket which came with their Mashita sauce. I am not sure where steamed buns have been all of my life because this was something different. The buns are handmade, so soft and fluffy..like a pillow. So beautiful and they were delicious!!!! Mashita means delicious and this lived up to it's name! I should have ordered more! Friends suggested this restaurant because they love the food, but we were disappointed by the new format: ordering food off of a screen (which was at times confusing and difficult) and then receiving food in plastic containers with plastic utensils. Besides giving our sit-down meal a "cheap" feeling and being environmentally wasteful, the plastic knife was incapable of cutting through my breaded chicken. I received an email from the restaurant asking for a rating, but the link did not work. We are visiting the area for vacation and saw the great ratings on Yelp. We were not disappointed. Service was great, and super friendly. We tried to house cocktails that were refreshing and unique. We got the sampler of steamed buns which were soft and pillowy. For dinner my son got japchae, and we got a beef bibimbap, and ssam with pork and chicken bulgogi. Each dish was super fresh and flavorful. My only itch was that all the sides (rice, kimchi, etc) were extra, though the base price was a good starting point so it wasn't too bad. Honestly, I'm not sure why there is an option for anything under 5 stars because Mashita ALWAYS knocks it out of the park! First time in the new dining room and WOW. It is beautiful! Service was on point as we were seated immediately and our food came out quickly. I had the Korean Style Chicken Bulgogi Burrito and my husband had the Bulgogi Bibimbap. Wonderful ambiance. The vibe of this restaurant is modern-industrial. Very clean, everything in its place and well mapped as far as the placement of tables. Happy hour here is about $6 per specialty cocktail. We ordered chicken katsu for the kiddos and it was decent certainly nothing to write home about but it was freshly made. As we browsed the menu we were delighted at the selection of proteins for the steamed buns. We ordered essentially one of each roll as a way to sample the proteins. We had mushroom, pulled pork, tofu, and pork as our proteins. They were all pretty bland but the biggest disappoints of all were the pork buns. Being a big fan of Korean food in general I expected lots of flavor and very tender meat. Instead what we got was practically flavorless, tough and dry. Even the Kimbap lacked flavor. The house bibimbap was one one the most puzzling creations I've had in a while no sizzling bowl, no sauce, no flavor but lots of fresh veggies and an over cooked egg. Overall not my favorite meal but the service was friendly enough. Small parking lot but the 2 times we arrived the parking lot was empty. I'm surprised of all the positive reviews... really We had high expectations but we were so disappointed. It's a pretty place but the food is salty and greasy (some burnt) with some korean food touch but done wrong, so-so at best. And I say after tasting half of their menu. The bulgogi sandwich was so burnt it was black and bitter. The only edible things were the dumplings. Unsurprisingly all of us had stomach issues afterwards.. Service is even worse. We asked for a miso soup and received a reduced soy sauce in a tiny sauce bowl for $3 (literally dark brown colored sauce) When we requested to take it back the server said if we want to we can take it with us because they are charging us for it anyway..?? And they decided to add a 20% gratuity to our bill.. I don't even know if adding a 20% gratuity to a bill is legal. read more

I will say that their food may be a little overpriced for the amount that you get. The bulgogi (which I've never had) tasted kind of like a rehydrated beef jerky in a way with great flavor!! I'm not sure what was going on with the kitchen when we went, but my party had a reservation for dinner and only half of our group was served on time. The other half of our group waited 1.5-2 hours for our food to come out. The half that got their food finished their meal, tried to wait for us, but eventually left because it was taking way too long. There were smaller tables that were seated after us and they received their meals (and finished eating too) before we even got ours. The 3 stars I give are only for the taste. If you're a big party, I wouldn't recommend coming here unless they sort out whatever was going on with them taking almost 2 hours to send our food out. read more
