While on an 8hr road trip, we called ahead to order dinner, so we could drive up, dine in right away, then get right back on the road. I gotta say, for a small city sushi place, this was a nice surprise. Sushi was very fresh (even fresher than our local place in DC), and the specialty rolls were super tasty. Decor is low key modern and clean, service was excellent, and again, the freshness! (& I'm a self-proclaimed sushi snob ;-). Kind of wish we lived closer so we could visit again. What an overall disappointment. If this were closer to DC, it would be rated a one star, but I am giving an extra star to account for it being further down I-81. To begin, it took the waitress 15-20 minutes to stop by the table to take my food order. There were only 4 other parties in the place (all with 4 or less individuals). We didn't get our sushi for another 25-30 minutes and the hot tea that was ordered never came until we asked the sushi chef. While the tea was comped, saving only a few dollars did not make up for the lack of reasonably paced service. I was curious why this place was so highly rated and thought that maybe the sushi would make up for the service. Unfortunately, the sushi was very basic with little flavor....soy sauce can only improve the taste so much. read more

Best sushi place in Harrisonburg. My family and I have been here many many times (to dine in and take out) and we are always super happy with the quality of sushi. We normally get salmon (and other varieties of) sashimi along with specialty rolls. The cuts of sashimi are always generous and the fish always fresh and delicious. We have tried pretty much every other sushi place in town and have been disappointed (or even a bit sick). But Sushi Jako never disappoints. There seems to be only one sushi chef that works here, and often times if dining in you may have a bit of an extra wait - but it is well worth it for the quality you will receive. So the building is in a very obscure place, and the other places it is surrounded by, make it look unappealing from the outside. The inside is clean, but doesn't look overly amazing, however their sushi is fantastic! I wa genuinely surprised by the quality of the food due to its location and outer building appewrance. This tiny little restaurant has super fresh assortment of delicious sushi with the nigiri sushi having generous portions. We had white tuna, yellowtail, yellowtail roll with green onion, mackerel and salmon. All delicious! The ginger dressing on my salad was especially good. Very affordable. Excellent staff. Hands down the best place in Harrisonburg for sushi. The owners are really nice and come out and talk to you while you eat. The last two times I've been there they've brought me complimentary pieces of sashimi (one of conch and one of scallop). When I heard Sushi Jako was under new management, I decided to give it a try since it had been a while since I had last gone, and I'm so glad I did. The sushi is fantastic and the service was great. The wait staff was very knowledgable about the different rolls available and was able to make some great suggestions for an adventurous eater. The Golden Bridge roll is my current favorite, and by itself can fill you up. Compared to other sushi options in town, the portion sizes here are generous and I don't find myself questioning the quality. And if you have a friend who isn't into sushi, there are many other delicious looking options, but I can't speak to them as I've never tried them.
