Completely shocked to find this level of sushi in Burlington. The reviews and photos looked pretty solid so we gave it a try for my daughter who was craving Japanese food. Chef Maeda is a treasure and hopefully the people of Burlington can appreciate his subtle genius. The chef special combo was, well, special. I finally tried this sushi place in downtown Burlington. First of all, the server was attentive and patient to explain everything on the menu. Also, we left behind a credit card and the staff called us to pick it up (luckily we made a reservation so they have my phone). Such a great business! All dishes we ordered were all delicious. Fish is fresh and of high-quality, which is the most important thing for a sushi shop. My chirashi was well presented with a variety of sashimi on sushi rice. However, my partner's sushi platter was slightly underwhelming. The fish cut fish-rice ratio was off (too little rice). We enjoyed our meal and the check was slightly over $100 for two. I really hope the kitchen could be more efficient but I also understand it's hard to staff a high-quality international cuisine restaurant in the area. It's a huge space but the owner can only staff a portion of the dining room. Still, it's one of the best Japanese restaurant in town and I hope they can figure out the missing pieces as time goes. read more

Our waitress was amazing, polite, and attentive. She even noticed my shirt giving away that we were visiting the area. The food was divine! We loved Sushi Maeda! Beautiful space, very friendly and helpful server, delicious sushi. Particularly notable for me were the clearly marked gluten-free options. I generally have to ask at sushi restaurants- this was a pleasant surprise. And the miso soup was gluten free - an even more pleasant surprise! Our only disappointment was that more people haven't heard of this great restaurant yet! Apparently they've been open for 2 years, but still under-the-radar. This place is legit. Fantastic Japanese food. Sure the service can sometimes be slow by American standards but that is not how sushi is meant to be. And it is a testament to devotion to quality confounded by the lack of service industry workers. Quality takes time and love. Get some appetizers. Some sake and craft cocktails. Gave it a second chance. Same impression - underwhelming. Waitress said sushi assortment is chef's choice, but is a lit of interesting things, "and things you won't get off the menu." We have been twice and enjoyed our meals both times. The seaweed salad is a nice appetizer. The fish for the sushi is the freshest in Burlington. I had the Chef's Sushi Assortment both times. The Sushi is definitely quality however, wait times for the food are very long. The prices for the sushi is comparable with a NYC Omakase restaurant which is not okay. Good sushi does not mean that you can charge Omakase prices and this was definitely not Omakase. I spent around 250$ and was literally still hungry after eating. I was in town to go to Nectars and found this new sushi place with good reviews. We get there and the waitstaff didn't want to give us a menu and told us the food wouldn't come any quicker. The young lady who helped us really tried to provide good service. The food was fresh but it took forever to get to us and the presentation was lacking. Absolutely amazing experience at Sushi Maeda! The wait was long, but deciding to wait was the BEST decision. The sake was delicious, the nigiri was on par with the best I've had in the states and as good as some places I've eaten in, in Japan. I would highly recommend the "special sushi sampler". The "tuna on tuna" (maguro on toro) piece was mind blowing - one of the best pieces I've ever had. Our waitress, Reiko, was such a breath of fresh air! She was so engaging and knowledgeable. This is the freshest and most authentic sushi experience in Burlington Vermont by far. The restaurant is immaculate and you can tell they put a lot of care into it. This is a new restaurant and it deserves much more recognition. The food was delicious and great serving sizes. My boyfriend and I got the salmon don and the omakase (chefs choice) as well as the homemade dumplings, dragon roll, miso soup, and edamame. I think owner was making our sushi which was also awesome. Best sushi I have had. There are plenty of good sushi places around but the sushi I had here was Fantastic! The restaurant is opening hibachi soon as well so there will be more wide appeal. The sushi chefs obviously take great pride in their work. It appears to be two older Japanese chefs. To be fair, the food was okay. The experience? not so much. I called and ordered dinner for my family right before I left Williston. Over $130 worth of food for me and kids. I was quoted 30 minutes lead time. When I arrived 30 minutes later on the dot, the order was not ready. Sure not a big deal, right? Well, it actually took over another hour to get my order! I was pretty close to cancelling it a few times. But kids had their hopes up for sushi. So I sucked it up and waited. When I got home, a lot of the items I ordered were missing from the bag. Ugh! I called the restaurant and they confirmed that the order was not complete, and that they had tried to call me back. To their credit my phone does have a record of that incoming call when I was driving. So I went back to get the rest of the food. Had to double park on Cherry Street this time. To my shock, the food was not ready! I tried to keep an eye on my car, but it got ticketed while I waited for a good 15 minutes. Granted it was my fault to double park. When I complained to Nick the manager, he agreed to pay for the ticket. To be honest, if he didn't agree, I would have returned the food. Fast forward to 2 months later, I received a notification of the unpaid parking ticket in the mail, along with a fine on top of the original amount. I called the restaurant and spoke to Nick. He remembered the incident right away, however he insisted that the restaurant could not be responsible for my double parking. You would think Nick could have at least called me to let me know that before I incurred the fine. I don't need to eat there ever again. Terrible service and manager's words and integrity are worth less than $88. read more

My husband and I went here one evening together and found the sushi to be worse than what you might find a gas station. Terribly put together and horrible flavors. Completely overpriced. We spent $80 for very little food and it was truly the worst. I'm not much of a complainer with restaurants, but this was bad.
