Okay... what to say. They unlocked a new pet peeve for me at AYCE--and honestly, at any restaurant for that matter. I'm incredibly laid back and tip well. However, as a customer I felt completely unwelcome and neglected. They literally handed me the tablet and left me to my own devices. I'm sorry, but what the actual fuck? This isn't my first rodeo. Even when they're short-staffed, most AYCE restaurants at least bring you water, take your drink order, and explain how their AYCE system works. (Luckily I'm not new to AYCE, so I knew not to over-order, but I'd be pretty annoyed if I were a first-timer and no one explained anything.) They didn't do any of that. I had to ask for water, and thank God I'm over 21 because I ordered sake through the tablet and nobody ever checked my ID. (So yeah... if I were a parent, I wouldn't let my teenager go here alone.) The part that didn't piss me off? They had a great variety on the AYCE menu, and the sushi had the perfect rice-to-fish ratio--so bravo for that. Some places give you almost double the rice they should, which honestly feels a little insulting. If I'm paying for sushi, I want to taste the fish, not fill up on rice. Had the service not completely and utterly ruined the experience, this easily would've been 5 stars and a generous tip. Unfortunately, the service overshadowed everything else. Which is honestly ridiculous. They need to figure out a better system--whether that's having a dedicated drink runner for the whole floor or closing part of the dining room until they have enough staff. Being that short-staffed isn't just bad service; it's how restaurants end up making serious mistakes, like accidentally serving alcohol to someone under 21 because nobody ever checked their ID. Mine was never checked. I did notice my servers seemed to rotate throughout the meal, but that doesn't change the fact that no one ever asked. I'm literally not asking for much. Water. Food. Maybe take my drink order. I mean... that's a really weird concept to expect at a restaurant, right? I'm honestly the easiest customer to please. Give me good food, a glass of water, and you can neglect me the rest of the meal. Ironically, I noticed the items I paid extra for that weren't included in the AYCE came out pretty quickly. So I guess I drank half the tip instead. Good thing I'm a responsible adult, because if I wasn't, I probably would've drank the whole tip waiting for someone to bring me water or take my drink order. Our family's first time here and we enjoyed the appetizers, sushi rolls, sashimi, hibachi, and desserts options. Among our favorites were the miso soup which was quite tasty and flavorful with seaweed and was not just broth. We also like the ika salad, fish cakes, shrimp tempura, coconut shrimp, chicken yaki, fried oysters, and even sesame balls for dessert. They had so many options which was great. Our sushi favorites included Jojo, Rainbow, Sal-fornia, and Mango Tokyo, with its delightful crunch. If you aren't into too many sauces overtaking your sushi, we recommend these rolls. For sashimi, we always get some tuna, salmon, eel, tamago egg, and kanikama crab and they were generous on the slices. We also liked that the rolls were decently portioned and not overly stuffed with rice. Overall, the food here was delicious and they have a big selection for the price ($33/adult). They were also great at refilling water all through the night and taking plates away to help us make space at the table. There is also a robot that comes by to deliver some appetizers which made it fun for the kids. The women's bathroom also included a diaper changing table which makes it family-friendly. The only improvement I'd give is that we didn't know that the hibachi bar and desserts (ice-cream and mousse cake options) were included. It would have been helpful to know about the hibachi earlier because we can make some hibachi for the kids while waiting for our sushi orders. After seeing some people at the hibachi bar it prompted us to asked a staff and we found out it was indeed included in our AYCE meals. Now expect a little wait here if you dine. So upon walking in, we saw they had a sign that they were short staffed which helped set our expectations. I think we waited about an hour for our sushi order which was on the long side. The appetizers did come within 15 and another at about 40 minutes before the first sushi orders. We would have liked the staff to mention which rolls were which when they dropped off the plate but we know they were busy so we just tried to figure it out ourselves. I will credit that we're able to get all our orders in and didn't miss anything we had marked from our menu selections. Other than that, the staff were friendly and courteous. We ordered a Pokémon chopsticks and they gifted our kids a couple small toys which was such a nice gesture. It made our experience happy as we also enjoyed the food here and left with happy stomachs. And we got to top it off with delicious marble chocolate ice-cream and mouse cake deserts. What's unique about this place is that they display menu drawings from customers on their walls which our kids were excited about This place is family-friendly and offer many delicious selections for their pricing. I was pleasantly surprised the staff kept up with all the orders in such a timely manner. The sushi was fresh, sliced moderately thick and had a good selection of specialty rolls. For me, some good parts and some not so good parts of the experience. Being the only all-you-can-eat sushi spot in Naperville, there was definitely a lot of interest -- as well as a spot that is large enough to comfortably accommodate a large group of people (10+). Service was friendly, though it took a rather long time to get food. Perhaps the greatest plus of this spot is their expansive menu. This is both in terms of the amount of offerings and the type of offerings. I don't think anyone around has nearly as many specialty rolls as sushi naper -- which makes up for a slightly higher than average 31.99 dinner price during my visit (though sushi seems to be quite expensive overall in Naperville, so this wasn't far off competitors). There are also unique ingredients like mango, torched salmon, fish eggs, etc. that you don't always see offered in an AYCE. The enormous choice might also contribute to inconsistency I saw throughout the meal. It almost seemed like luck for whether I got a tightly packed maki or of it was nearly falling apart. Throughout the menu, it was quite a variance between rolls that were good or just okay, which also applied to the nigiri as well. The only thing that was quite consistent was that the fish was quite generous throughout all the items and the amount of rice was the same as you'd expect from a non-AYCE restaurant. However, even between orders of the same roll, sometimes the assembly could be extremely neat and at other times a bit sloppy. With the ingredients as well, sometimes vegetables were quite crispy and other times felt a bit soft. Outside of a pretty crispy sweet potato roll, the texture contrast wasn't really evident in items either. The nigiri however was quite good throughout, better than expected for an AYCE restaurant. The presentation was also quite good throughout with a good amount of color and neat presentation. The appetizers were similar as well, both better than expected for items like the fried oyster and takoyaki, but a bit disappointing for the crab rangoon and miso soup. But the presentation was still good and portion sizes quite generous. Overall, the offering is quite good with lots of selection, and a little high but still reasonable price. The food has fairly good presentation and is enjoyable though inconsistent. But the large restaurant with plenty of parking and being the only AYCE sushi choice in Naperville do make it one of the places to return to, even if it takes a while to get food. read more
