So so good!! First time come to Chef Soon and I've been sleeping on this place, clearly. Reservations are strongly recommended, place is smaller than anticipated but packed for good reason. They have a nice outdoor patio which makes for a nice option in the summer. We started with miso soup and edamame (spicy). Next, we loved the fact that their "regular" maki rolls included the option in the roll but also on top as well - served with avocado and cucumber which makes for a really nice filling maki roll. We had the Kamikaze (excellent) and the Octo. Finally, we loved the fire cracker roll and liked 7 bridges, but was our least favorite one. However, truly, all 4 maki rolls were so good. Amazing sushi, cool vibes. Ate here last week and had an amazing time, the sushi is a next level, culinary experience. The chefs signature rolls are so innovative, I've never had any rolls like them anywhere else! The flavors were surprising and delicious! With flavors like a truffle vinaigrette, garlic sauce and strawberry and mango featured in maki we were blown away with flavor! It was all so good. And it was beautifully plated. Also unique, Chef Soon has nigiri that also features unique flavor combinations an we had several that were so so tasty. I want to go back and try more! My favorite bite of the night is a tie between Chef Soon's Special Maki and the Zuke Salmon signature nigiri. The vibes of this restaurant are so hip for being in an unassuming location. We ordered drinks, salads, sushi, and dessert. I'd honestly skip the dessert--the cheesecake was thin, dry, and just disappointing. If you're a cheesecake fan, it's a pretty sad way to end the meal. Thankfully my last sushi bite was the Zuke salmon, which is always excellent. We spent around $350, which normally isn't an issue because we've had great experiences here in the past. But this visit was frustrating. My sister-in-law has a serious allergy to seeds and peanuts, and we were crystal clear about needing no sesame. In the past, the staff has been extremely careful and accommodating. This time, two rolls came out with sesame. We were willing to let those slide and said it was fine. But then they brought out a third roll with sesame--and that's when we got agitated. At that point, it really ruined the shared meal we were hoping for. What was safe tasted great, but the repeated mistakes took the enjoyment out of the experience. We weren't in any rush, but it definitely felt like the kitchen was winding down for the night. Chef Soon also wasn't there, which was disappointing because it genuinely felt like the attention to detail wasn't the same without him. And not to sound cheap, but after that many allergy-related mistakes, there should have been some sort of acknowledgment of an apology, actions speak louder than words. In my opinion a small discount, a complimentary dessert or app, something should have been offered. Instead, nothing. Chef soon is my favorite sushi restaurant. I often tell anyone in Illinois it's the best I've been to here. Normally this is a solid five-star spot for us, but tonight was a three out of five at best. Mistakes happen, and I'll be back... but this visit was honestly pretty upsetting. I think I may be on a search for a new favorite sushi place for my sister. read more

2 years later and the sushi is just as amazing. I'm adding some more photos from my most recent visit. The owners are very friendly and seem to know everyone that was at the restaurant. We came around the holiday season so there were many families celebrating. The sushi is honestly one of the best places I've been to. Every roll I've tried from here is light, flavorful, and clean-tasting (compared to other places that might overwhelm you with rice and salt). This time, we tried the Summer roll, and it is my favorite. It had a lovely, fresh, lemony taste that truly tasted like summer. read more

Was here from California visiting family for my 60th birthday. The food, the service and the fun was. 5 stars. Our server was fantastic and the chef came by to say hello. This place gets packed very fast so I highly recommend making a reservation whenever possible. The atmosphere is modern and up to date. I'd say max capacity is about 80ish including the covered outdoor patio. Staff members are very friendly and accommodating. I have a selfish allergy and it's a plus that I don't have to remind them of it haha. The quality of their sushi is top notch. Very fresh and tasty. Everything is amazing here; the food, service, atmosphere! We had a variety of items, such as chef soon's roll, a variety of maki, a hickory infused salmon nigiri special and so much more. Even the California roll and salmon and avocado rolls were the best I've ever had before. The ingredients are very fresh which is why you can taste the food as it is meant to be. It's nice for the area but this sushi is so high priced for its specialty nigiri and daily specials...so small and not that impressive just normal for what you would find at an over average place. We actually received our drinks and starters (yummy miso soup) fairly quickly. It was after this however the wheels came off. We put in our main order after the apps arrived. Understandable that service might be a little slow on a busy Friday night, but it took an hour for us to be served the entre portion. I'm obsessed with creamy ginger dressing and always searching for a place that has it...this place has been right under my nose for so long! This was our first visit to this restaurant and it will be our last. We walked in around 2:10 and instead of being greeted with a hello how many we were greeted with a how many and you know we close at 2:30. Then we had staff staring at us as if we had said something incorrectly, and they pointed at us as well. What they should've done instead is when we walked in the door is handed up a menu and said if you could order in the next five minutes because our kitchen closes soon, we would really appreciate that. Two that were were very memorable: Blazing Mango- mango and strawberry combination was fantastic Summer- citrus with heavy lemon The martinis were great. The "pear-fect" in particular was fantastic. Having lived in Asia for most of my life, I've never had better sushi around Chicago than what you would get in chef soon Yes prices are steeper than the average sushi restaurant but you truly are paying for quality. I cannot stress it anymore, the fish was so fresh.... It was a melt in your mouth moment. This is our second time trying different maki here. Forgot what we ordered last time, but my BF said this is the best Sushi place in the area. We tried many places, and both agreed that this is the best. The taste and texture are better than other places. The service is great and the waitress recognized us immediately after a couple of weeks. We have decided to come here only if we want to eat Sushi. Will try other stuff next time. Good service, great food! But I can't give it an extra star because while sitting outside, a couple employees of the restaurant came out to shout at their friends who were driving in the parking lot. The patio is gated by a wrought iron fence and the 2 employees hung over the railing yelling like they were at a hockey game. I'm talking full on swarey banter, the kind of hoop and holler that you do when you're drunk with 8 -10 beers and it's 2am. Only it was a Wednesday evening ... at 5:30pm celebrating my birthday with my husband and 10 and 13 year olds. Well it turns out, the "friends" in the parking lot had kids too! In fact, they let their 5 and 7 year olds into the small gated area to run around screaming just as loud as their parents nearly knocking into diners eating at their tables. I get it. You cannot control patrons. But the sushi chef and the waitress were encouraging their friends to partake in the chaos, without an apology to any of the diners. They just went on and on with their loud conversations as if we didn't even exist. Good food but don't sit outside unless you want to yell as if you were in a drunken stupor. They may have put some fine dining music on the blue tooth speaker on the patio, but why try to fancy it up when the waitstaff act like bafoons outdoors? read more

Sushi was good but be prepared to be rushed out if Cindy is your waitress. Super pushy and was urging us to basically be get out even though we had a reservation. The place wasn't full at all even though it was a Friday and she told us as the end that we had to leave bc the booth we were in was booked. Mind you there were several tables open including booths and we were actively ordering sushi and drinks. If you guys have a time frame on tables at least note that when booking and atleast make sure the place is busy if you're going to rush customers to get out. Will not be back and will not ever recommend to others. I'd rather go somewhere else to spend money and enjoy my time read more
