In most AYCE sushi restaurants, the hot foods typically take a backseat. Not at this location. Their rangoons, fried calamari, fried rock shrimps, hibachi, pad thai, clams were all excellent. Their sushi is also fresh and high quality. We've been to both branches ( Herndon and Vienna) and this Herndon branch is bigger and parking is so much easier. The only reason I gave them 4 's is the fact that their late night dinner service is subpar. They close at 11pm and we came at 9pm. Ther buffet was empty and service was pretty inconsistent. Maybe it was just the timing of when we came in but their staff was eating dinner and the manager looked like he had been working the whole day. This location recently opened and you can definitely tell. The one in McLean is definitely the big brother and has fresher cuts of fish. I noticed the sashimi here came out quickly and tasted a bit off. The nigiri pieces were definitely a lot fresher. There is a wide variety of hot food items from wings to even seafood boil options. The sushi and Asian menu items were served quickly. Prices are reasonable and they had seating for all party sizes. All you can eat but not buffet style (except for some hot foods during dinner). I'm actually not a big fan of sushi but my wife and son are. My daughter prefers cooked foods. There are a lot of options besides sushi. The menu is huge and you just let the waiter know what items you want and they bring it out to you. And the waiter keeps checking on you to order more food. I think there is a 90 minute time limit but that is PLENTY of time. We never felt rushed either. Also their desserts were delicious too. We wanted to try Sushi Oishii AYCE but wanted to give them time to get settled into their jobs. We were here recently on a Saturday around 4 p.m. There were a few occupied tables as it was still early. The dining room is large, almost cavernous. I can imagine when it's full, it would be noisy. We were greeted and seated promptly. Plus we were given menus showing what rolls and sashimi were available. They do have a few hot entrees plus appetizers and soup. To drink, we both ordered a cup of hot green tea. We started with miso soup and an appetizer of crab rangoon. The miso soup was okay but only lukewarm in temperature. The crab rangoon consisted of 2 small pieces, with each of us having one. It came with a sweet and sour type dipping sauce. It was decent. Then we ordered a 6 piece tuna and avocado roll (that was for me). My husband got some 10 pieces of tuna (maguro) sashimi. On each table is a bottle of low sodium soy sauce, which we appreciated. We each were given a small cup that contained some wasabi and ginger. For seconds, I got a "pink lady roll" which had some tuna, salmon and yellowtail and cucumber in it. My husband got 5 pieces of yellowtail. It costs $32+ per person. Drinks aren't included so there was an extra charge for the tea, plus we added a tip. Our server was attentive and encouraged us to maybe get more than seconds---as he put it "thirds, fourths or fifths". That would have been too much! We came for dinner on a weekday and was poorly disappointed. The food, service, everything was not good. Ever since they opened we had wanted to try and unfortunately will not be coming back. Firstly, the food - it was okay and the only reason this is getting 3 stars. They have unlimited sashimi and it was decently fresh. The rolls were okay. Every thing on the appetizer menu that is fried tastes very similar. There is no seasoning. The service - for a weekday dinner with maybe 25% capacity, the service we received was non-existent. We had to continuously wave over our server who was very hard to find. They never came over proactively and never offered to refill our drinks. A lot of the food we ordered were also put in incorrectly and we received items that we didn't order, which normally is fine, we can just re-order. However, the wait time for the food to come out was horrendous. So we ended up just accepting what we were given since we didn't want to have to re-track down our server, re-order, wait another 20 minutes and maybe get the right food item. For an AYCE that puts a time limit and charges for food waste, they were really giving us the short end of the stick. We came hungry and were not satisfied leaving. read more

We were there twice and both times no major flaws,service is something between average and good.Noe to main point: fish. My strategy is not to eat rolls or fried rice,but eat nigiri only. I can say that scallops are fresh,salmon cuts are acceptable,even squid was pleasant. I love an AYCE sushi, so I had to try this new Sushi Oishii location in Herndon. I'll start my review by saying, I don't have the most refined palate when it comes to sushi. I found all the sushis we got to taste great and they tasted fresh (which they don't always at AYCE places). I really enjoyed the spicy girl roll and the rainbow roll. I went with one friend, and we ate about 7 rolls. I also appreciate that they have things that aren't sushi, like gyoza and miso soup. They also have desserts, but we didn't order any. The service was a little slow, we probably could have eaten a bit more if the service was faster. I will definitely be coming back for sushi, maybe with a few more people next time. read more

I went to Sushi Oishii last week with a group of 8 for dinner during soft opening. Quite frankly, they were not ready for any kind of opening at all. We came in a bit before 8 pm and it was pretty packed. I didn't expect perfect service, but I felt like they didn't even meet the bare minimum. Our first orders didn't come until nearly an hour after we got there -- and even then, it was just a few plates and not all of what we had ordered. The next few orders (1-2 plates each time) came out in waves of 15-20 min. We kept having to ask our server for more water and about the status of the food. She said that their ticketing system was not functioning.... So then why would you not write down the orders physically on a sheet of paper?? We had to repeat our orders several times to get more food. Thus, service was not good. Some of the reviewers noted that there weren't enough wait staff to cover the demand. Around 9:30-10 pm, the restaurant was clearing out. There were a few staff standing around the register, but no one was going around to clear the plates and trash off the tables. Food-wise, it was mediocre. Nothing stood out to me. The tempura was very oily. We only got the bulk of our orders around 10 pm (2 hours after we arrived). The only saving grace was the fried cheesecake, which was tasty (hence the 2 stars). I do hope they improve their operations, but until then, I will not be coming back. read more

The service was good when we went here for a work lunch. The place wasn't packed at all. We were 7 people, and we ate a lot. You get more than your moneys worth on a visit. With that said, the food was alright. The rice in the sushi was smashed, and ruined the presentation. It didn't look appetizing to be honest. The place is quite spacious, no busts, they have nice tables and generally, place is looking a bit different from other "all you can eat" For larger groups you need to call ahead and make a reservation. What about the food itself, I would place it somewhere in the middle between Sushi Queen and Sushi King( which is permanently closed, and I really liked their food ) We had sashimi, different rolls and appetizers. Generally, not bad, but almost all the rolls contained "crab" and quite a bit of sauce which steals from the taste. Nice sushi! I came here for lunch on a Saturday and they were not too busy. We ordered a lot of sashimi, sushi rolls, and some extras like takoyaki, seaweed salad, kani salad, fried Oreo, and fried cheesecake. The portions of sashimi were generous and fresh. My favorites were probably the eel and sweet shrimp. The only one I wasn't a huge fan of were the roe, since they were really salty. The sushi rolls were decent, too. I don't expect top quality sushi from an all you can eat place, but these were pretty good for AYCE. I think the service at this restaurant could be improved. Sometimes it would be a long time before the waiter came back to take more orders or clear our plates. Hopefully the service will get better over time since this location just opened. read more

There were only a few customers. The place is big but maybe four other tables were being served. The place is practically empty. Others who went to the buffet just looked at the empty trays and left with nothing to bring back to their table. The buffet was not refilled. The waitress is new and we were happy with her. We ordered sashimi. This is the first time I had sashimi that didn't look appetizing at all. The fish were sliced big and some slices in blocks. If they didnt want us to order more, they succeeded. Definitely no passion for making your platter look good. It's sashimi. Slice them thinly and set them in a platter neatly. Anyway, glad I tried them out first before inviting family and friends. Cooked shrimp was cut in half so the guts were nicely removed, haven't seen that done in any buffets before. Fried calamari was over cooked and batter was very oily. I wish I could give a great review on the food and service but sadly, I never tried it. Instead, this review is on what I did not receive. I called late on a Friday night for take out bc I knew they would be closing soon. It was 10:25pm on a Friday and their website said they close 11pm. I knew I had maybe 5-15min to order with most restaurants doing last call on the kitchen 15-30 min prior to closing hours. After calling and being greeted I request to order take-out. The person who answered sounded like a young man and was nice in his greeting but gave me the "oh well our kitchen closes in 4 min so..." line, leaving me hanging and expecting me to be ok with that response. I wasn't. So I replied by asking "so you're saying the kitchen IS open and is taking orders for 4 more minutes, or not?" I asked for two reasoned, 1) I needed the clarification since I was left confused with his statement to me. And 2) I wanted him to be aware that he just told a customer that yes the kitchen is open but since it's closing soon, we hope you don't order. With my question back to him, he realized he was in the wrong bc he agreed to take my order, which was two rolls and a sashimi. Nothing outrageous. After ordering I was left in silence for a bit and then he said "hold on, I need to check something with my manager". I could hear bits of the conversation but what I clearly heard was "so should I accept the order". He was obviously discussing my order with his manager to which the manager of course told him to take my order bc the kitchen WAS still open. When the man came back on the line, he asked me to repeat my order. This man had no intention of taking my order and assumed his manager would back him up bc he didn't take or write down my order in the first place. I was so irritated by the whole interaction I decided not to give them my business. They had great reviews and I really wanted to try them, but I just I couldn't believe the audacity of the man on the phone with me. It's absurd that the person on the phone who tried to shirk me off, thought it was ok. Not once, but twice! First when he initially told me the kitchen was closing soon and hoping I'd be ok with that and hang up, and then again after taking my order to only put me on hold and check with his manager. I've worked in restaurants and bars for 15 years and totally understand wanting to get out early on a Friday night or ANY night for that matter and at any job, who doesn't?! But if you work at an establishment with posted operating hours (especially the hospitality industry) then expect to work and operate within those hours. read more

This place was PACKED, so expect a wait if you come at this time, or call to get on the wait-list There's a small buffet included with the dinner, which includes crab legs, general chicken, beef ribs, and chicken nuggets. We ordered a few appetizers. She enjoyed the avocado salad, and shumai, and I ordered the crab ragoon which was delicious. I also ordered pad Thai and the hibachi steak. The pad Thai was decent, but definitely not quite the same as a Thai restaurant. The hibachi steak was good with plenty of veggies, tho I think I like the steak at Kanji better. But what we're really here for is the sushi right? And the sushi is quality. The nigiri was fresh and tasted great, with a good rice balance. She got the Mexican roll which I tried some of and enjoyed. I had also ordered the volcano roll which was delicious. There were a couple items that we had ordered that we never got, but we were pretty stuffed so didn't worry about it. I feel like how busy it was probably affected that. How anyone can think or carry a conversation is beyond me. The maître d like his colleague at the Vienna Sushi Oishii had no problem turning down the noise. My waiter was attentive, personal, and professional. I prefer sashimi and I was able to order lunch off that menu at the evening price. Only ten dollars more to avoid a carbohydrate (rice) overload. The miso soup was a perfect starter on a cold day. The seaweed salad was fresh and abundant. I had three plates of all the sashimi offered. For the last two orders I enjoyed different variations from the menu. There is a large and wide variety on offer. Not to be crass; however, the price for the sashimi is fair considering the amount that I ate; the slices were fresh, thick, and full of flavor.
