Enjoyed our recent visit to Matsutake. The service was great. I only recall tables so good for large groups. We went with 11 people and made reservation ahead of time. We ended up ordering the karaage and UFO sushi roll, which we did enjoy. Sushi pricing is fair, but sashimi and nigiri pieces are not. We ate somewhere else afterwards. One of the workers was honest with us and said they believed the menu was extremely overpriced as well, when I asked about it. When she finally came she took my order and cut me off as I was reading it off to ask if I wrote it on the a la carte paper instead. I ordered one roll, two nigiri, a hot tea and water. My two nigiri came out well before I ever got water. I didn't get water for nearly 20 minutes (I was checking the time). The nigiri was very tasty, and the salmon pieces were huge. My roll was just OK. It was a broiled roll and they left it in for too long. The top was burned and the fish was overcooked and dry. Matsutake is among the better quality options for sushi in the area. They have a solid selection of rolls with generous cuts of fish and unique flavor combinations. The rice remains reasonably firm and flavorful even when pressed into rolls. So why three stars? First, Matsutake offers a relatively poor value versus competitors. Rolls are priced a few bucks higher than most other local options, and this does not translate to bigger portions sizes or better quality. Additionally, every time I have ordered takeout from here I've had to wait well past my quoted time for my food to be ready. Again, this does not occur at my other go-to restaurants nearby. My girlfriend and I wanted sushi for dinner last week and wanted to go somewhere that was new to us. We had no idea that the shopping center this restaurant is in even existed. So it was a nice find. The sushi here was actually very good. It was a little more per roll, but each roll was loaded up with fish so it makes the extra money worth it. I would definitely come back for the sushi here. I would recommend against the bao buns. They were just alright when compared to other restaurants. I would say that the service here was good. The sushi came out pretty quickly and the waitress took our order quickly. Do make a note that we came later at night (after 8:30 pm I think) so it wasn't very busy. The ambiance is very much older feeling. It feels like they took the space of an old Wendy's or something of that nature. It's super casual in here and I don't think anyone comes here for the ambiance. There are a couple of TVs though and they were playing a replay of Thursday Night Football so there's that. I recommend coming here if you want good sushi. If you want more experience and ambiance, then this may not be the place. read more

I remember when Matsutake was in Herndon at Worldgate offering a sushi buffet lunch which was a pretty good deal. I'm pretty confident these are the same owners. We love Japanese food/sushi so it is always good to have more options. That said, when you peruse the Matsutake menu you quickly notice they have ditched anything remotely similar to the 'value buffet' from back in the day at Herndon and this is the new, fancy, expensive version of Matsutake. This has been one of the reasons we haven't dined here yet, however, we were in the area running errands and wanted to grab something close by. I knew Matsutake offers lunch specials like many other Japanese restaurants so I pulled up the website and took a quick look at the online menu. Yes, there are lunch specials but no prices online. Ok, we'll give it a shot considering the excellent reviews. We pull into the parking lot and it is fairly empty on a Friday at lunch. They've done a good job with the remodel from the Boston Market so that's positive. On to the food... - Bento box with Chicken Teriyaki, shrimp tempura, California rolls, etc - Katsudon - Udon & 4 piece sushi lunch special It is....underwhelming. Katsudon is on the saltier/soy sauce side and needs more mirin/broth flavor. One of the more disappointing katsudon's I've had. The Bento is OK. Typical stuff. The Udon broth is also more on the soy saucy side and needs more bonito broth flavor. To top it off, I will reiterate.. be ready to spend a pretty penny. Even for lunch specials you are in the $25 range. I realize inflation has hit everybody but you can go down the street to other highly reviewed Japanese sushi restaurants in Reston and lunch specials are in the more reasonable $15 dollar range (at least reasonable these days). It is a little more expensive, but the quality is shockingly great: a friend of mine had taken pictures and dined at this establishment, and it looked so delicious that I simply had to try it for myself. Make sure you check the website for hours. I ordered the torched salmon sushi that came with two pieces and had a truffle sauce on top... It was honestly one of the most amazing things I have eaten in quite some time and absolutely worth of splurge. It was two pieces for $10 but the journey your mouth takes is priceless. I'd recommend it if you were looking for a rice dish. For sushi, I just got the yellowtail and tuna rolls. They both were delicious and the quality of fish was pretty good. When this Matsutake took over the spot where Boston Market used to be, I was eager to try it. However, in the beginning, they had no website thus making it impossible to see what their menu was like. When they finally got a website, the menu posted was incomplete and lacking details regarding their food items. Still, we were glad to see a website as it did give their hours of operation, at least. Plus, what little there was about their menus was adequate enough for us to know we would find something we like. We were here on a Sunday night around 4:30 p.m. At that hour, there were a few tables that were occupied. A staff member immediately greeted and seated us plus gave us menus. Their menu is much larger than we expected. In particular, we were pleased that they had things like a sushi/sashimi combo, chirashi and tekka don. Such items were a la carte. We both decided to get the same items. For starters, we ordered miso soup plus an avocado salad, Our main course was the sushi/sashimi combo. For his drink, my husband had a Kirin Ichiban while I asked if they had a cup of hot green tea (which they did). When the green tea came to the table, the mug was huge and had a well filled tea bag in it. I made sure that it did not over steep so there was no bitterness in it. Our server was friendly and efficient. Once she put in our order, it didn't take long for the food to come up. The miso soup arrived piping hot and had good flavor. We did notice that there was no tofu in it. While we like to see tofu in our miso soup, the soup did have good flavor. The avocado salad had thinly sliced avocado in it that was fresh and it sat on a bed of mixed greens. The dressing was described as "miso dressing" although it had no strong flavor, it did have a nice creamy texture. We wished there was more in the salad, however. As for the main course----we were quite surprised at how large the portions of the sushi and sashimi were. All the fish was very fresh with melt in your mouth smoothness and texture. The sashimi was thickly cut and the pieces were big. Our server saw us cutting the pieces with our forks and she brought us table knives, which did help. Along with salmon and tuna slices, there were fish that we didn't recognize. I wish such places all had those signs that have photos along with the name of different fish that were placed on every table. The sushi consisted of a spicy tuna roll which, thankfully, wasn't over spiced as we could still taste the freshness of the fish. Plus, there was some salmon and some tuna nigiri. Garnish included mizuno and daikon. Plus, there was pickled ginger and a generous portion of wasabi. We ate it all and enjoyed every bite. However, we both felt quite full. The ambiance says "Japanese restaurant" with the nicely done decor. Also, it was very clean. This wasn't a cheap meal at all as it cost (if I remember correctly) $126 + change before the tip. Yes, one can find cheaper sushi and sashimi. Yet, we didn't get upset at the price due to the food quality being excellent. Plus from start to finish, the staff took good care of us. We went there for a birthday dinner (5 people). I picked this restaurant based on the reviews and menu online. There was a slight disconnect between was or how the restaurant was presented online. This was your ordinary "lunch" feel establishment. The service was horrible. Folks that got sushi were served 1st. about 15 mins later the folks that ordered soup got theirs. The kicker was that it took 30 mins more for the hibachi entree and the bento box to arrive. By then everyone else finished their meal. Couldn't wait any longer. The coke had an odd taste to it. the person that ordered hibachi and the bento box ate about half. Bottom line is that if you want lunch go for it, but if you want a nicer atmosphere, good food, and on time. don't read more

The sushi of Johnnie Rill and Ca real Crab was excellent..... 5 stars. The hibachi dinner were vey large and be shared as we ate 1/2 ours and took the rest home. Guest got NY steak cooked medium and he said the only thing it needed was garlic salt. I got rib eye and lobster and my steak was great but the lobster was cooked in oil and a little rubbery for my taste. I would have loved just lobster all together like I normally eat it. Before you checkout, when the clover site says ASAP in big letters, look for the small print that says that ASAP means whenever they get to it. We may come back to dine in. But I recently did a carry out order and they have the slowest service for carry out. My order was going to be ready in 45 minutes, so I waited and came 5 minutes before. The lady told me they were working on the one roll I had in my order along with ton katsu and stone pot rice. I sat at the waiting area nearly 20 minutes later and still no food. When I finally received my food, brought it home which is literally 2 minutes away. My tonkatsu was close to being close and soggy, which means it sat in the kitchen or wherever they kept it and the rolls were small potion for $18-$19. Stone pot rice was ok. But overall, now I feel like this sushi restaurant is overpriced for just ok food. And super slow service. read more

We tried this on a Monday evening to avoid a crowd since we came with babies in carriers. The host and servers were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. We talked about how fast and great the service was several times. The manager took time to come speak with us to say hello and ask if we had dined with them before. She was very kind and even the sushi chefs at the counter said hello as we walked by! I cannot say enough about how nice everyone was! The gyoza was fried and I wasn't expecting that. The filling was a bit mushy and the deep fry taste took over the gyoza. The dipping sauce was tasty, but caused it to become more mushy. The rolls were packed with roe. I wished for a bit more of the eel sauce. The insides felt mushy and the rolls fell apart easily when picked up. I was hoping for actual fish pieces in the signature rolls rather than blended filling. Rolls were pricey for the quality, averaging about $18. Fish was fresh! I really wanted to like this place since it is convenient and I frequent North Point plaza. Unfortunately I don't think I would try it for sushi again. This restaurant was a nice find, upon walking in, the restaurant was very inviting, I liked the layout, the windows brought in some great light. There was also a pretty cool waiting area towards the front. Our waitress and staff were very attentive, I ordered sushi of course, and my nephew got the dinner box (not pictured) that's on me. But it was very well portioned, the Bulgogi beef and seaweed salad was on point, definitely getting it on my next trip. My sushi was amazing and laid out artfully. The Hibachi chicken here is not as traditional as a hibachi chicken place where it is cooked right in front of you so I would not recommend this dish. Ambiance is nice, Decor is excellent, seats are well cushioned, tables heights are decent and atmosphere is silent. Staff and service is excellent. Food is great, I have tasted some of the best sushi here and attention to details is good, definitely noticeable. Tropical roll was delicious and so was Johnnie roll. You can skip the Caviar Rainbow roll. Signature sushi are tad bit expensive than your regular sushi dishes but that shouldn't stop you from trying them. First time visitor to this rather new restaurant in the Reston area; we have visited the location at DCA many times and always found it to be good. The decoration is great which is especially true if you are seating looking at Mount Fuji and not the televisions. The music is nice, but perhaps just a little too loud. The crab wontons were excellent as they were light and not greasy. The tempura was also light and not greasy. A simple word of caution: it is best to just point on the menu to the item that you want instead of only verbally ordering an item. It saves on confusion. And, check your bill to make sure it is yours. Older guest would appreciate having menus with larger type font and a little more spacing between the description of the items. These comments just reflect growing pains of a new restaurant. We will be back. read more

Example: I got TWO "specialty" rolls, tuna based, (no lobster or no real crab) and a 22oz Sapporo. My bill was $59 BEFORE TIP. 3 items. (This would be $42-$44 before tip at the other local spots for similar quality and sizing) Comparable pricing: Basic California Roll: $7.50 (Normally $6 ish) Rainbow Roll: $18 (Normally $14 ish) Comparable Speciality Rolls: $18-$20+ (Normally $14-$16) 22oz Sapporo: $14 (Normally $11) 8oz Sapporo: $8 (Normally $6) Roll sizes were NORMAL, so you are not paying for "more". Again, everything was decent and I so wanted this place to be a "go to", but at a massive price premium compared to others locally, for similar quality and quantity, it's just not worth it. Per my actual order above, a $15 premium for one person is a lot. Imagine if I brought my full family of 4?
