Gave their rolls and sashimi a try. The alaska roll didn't have imitation crab. It was just an avocado roll with salmon on top. For $9, that is really expensive. Their salmon sashimi is thick one way but thin the other way. If you compare to other places that are considered thick like sushi garden or sushi mura, it is more finger like. The katsu don is more like a katsu meal. The katsu is separate and it comes with rice and salad. This was actually really worth it and priced well. The agedashi tofu didn't come with sauce? Not sure if they forgot to pack it or it really comes dry. Dishes are hit or miss. read more

I used to come here when I was younger after shopping at Metrotown. Finally had a chance to go back and try them again. It's always so cute having a restaurant and this little house building. They have happy hour specials for late night now and buy one, get one half off for oshi sushi. We ordered these Salmon and ebi oshi. There was a salad dressing sauce on the Abby, which I wasn't a fan of, but overall enjoyed that they were saucy. I like to call this place "Haunted Sushi". It is located inside a giant mansion with a very long dark history. You may want to google that house. A friend been here couple times and he agrees that each time he went the taste was very inconsistent but before he went with me, the sushi or food that he had here was not bad. We were a party of two and we showed up on a Sunday. We ordered couple items to share: -Red Dynamite Roll -Red Yam Roll -BBQ Salmon Gama Food portion size was pretty good. The red dynamite roll and red yam roll both tasted the same (used the same sauce). However, what I didn't like about them was that they were drenched in sauce. I couldn't taste anything other than the sauce. Also I personally don't like sweet sushi. The salmon gama was not bad. Portion size was good. I just wished it was not that dry. Service is a hit and miss. I felt that we had to haunt or find the server in order to get serve. The reason for this is because of the table layout. Nothing like some funeral home sushi to get one's blood moving. Yes, this place used to be a funeral home, and I'm guessing some rich guy's house before that. Parking is available on the side streets behind Kingsway. The place is still proportioned like a house from the early 1900s, which makes it a bit awkward. The front counter is tiny, and the dining area is spread out among the different rooms. Staff were friendly. Buddy and I tried the Party tray A. The rolls are the typical small (normal?) ones, but the nigiri have half the rice compared to basically every other place out there. See photo. Buddy and I looked at each other, and we both knew we were looking at another dinner right after finishing here. This thing was polished off in 15 minutes, and yes, both of us left hungry. Ugh. I came here for a dinner a month ago. This place was quieter with lesser people in the restaurant. I've seen 3-4 servers working here in the past, but there was only 1 server working that day. We ordered Tonkatsu ($15.80) and Rainbow Roll ($16.90) it was so good. Tonkatsu was freshly made. It was tender and crispy. The food came with rice and salad on the side. This place has been around so long! I love the house setting and it always feels like a very inviting place to go to for Japanese. Not as busy as it used to be so it's easy to get a table. My nieces loved the udon and tempura. Food is alright, but their service is truly bizarre. Their menu has a warning that reads "price subject to change without notice" and they charge you whatever they feel like. They don't tell you about price changes when you're ordering; you only find out when you get the bill. I doubt that's legal, but I also doubt that you'll bother taking them to small claims court to recover $20, so you're likely to just eat the random price change tax if you decide to dine here and they feel like overcharging you by $20. read more

Which leads to my second point that their sashimi were very cold, the tuna tasted fishy, and the octopus was very tough. I did like the tiny shrimps. In general the sauces were too overpowering and salty. I mean yes, they taste good and go well with the dishes - especially the volcano roll. But there's too much sauce everywhere and we were drinking water all night after. It was a shame that the sauces were all we could taste on the aburi platter and I couldn't even finish them. My colleague likes the spicy chirashi which is basically adding the Korean spicy sauce (gochujang) to the bowl. Lunch has bento boxes at affordable prices, letting you have a bit of everything. I ordered the chicken bento box and four pieces of unagi - which is bbq eel. What can I say I was hungry :p The chicken bento box comes with miso soup and a salad. Included in box itself - comes with couple pieces of adegashi tofu, edamame steam beans, four California rolls, large portion of chicken teriyaki and rice, mixed tempura, and couple pieces of oranges. I have to admit the teriyaki sauce is quite tasty as well all the other elements that make up this bento box. Service is quite good as our waiter ensured we had enough tea or water. He also checked if we satisfied with our order. Overall the prices are quite decent and reasonable. Great lunch getaway... Parking could be a challenge at times during the afternoon and be careful as you can't park between the hours of 3-6 on Kingsway - you could be towed as a forewarning. Full disclosure: I only came here because legend has it that this spot is haunted. Why? Before it was Sushi Oyama, in it's previous life, it used to be a morgue/funeral home. But, I was pleasantly surprised with how beautiful the restaurant actually was. With the holidays coming up, it was beautifully decorated and had plenty of string lights hanging all over the place. It reminded me of going to a nice dinner at a wealthy relative's home. They have a large menu featuring different maki rolls, specialty rolls, sashimis, udons, donburis, and more. I decided to keep it simple and stick to two different maki rolls: the bill's roll (sweet potato tempura and salmon w/ masago and spicy chipotle mayo) and the salmon avocado roll. The dynamite cone also piqued my interest so I got one of that. And, I'm so glad I did because it was my favourite of all the things I ordered. The Bill's Roll was good. I found it to be pretty flavourless and dipped it some extra spicy mayo to give it a bit more flavour. The salmon avocado roll didn't taste very fresh and the rice was quite hard. Service was a little spotty and it may be because they were understaffed. However, the restaurant wasn't busy, and I had to wait a bit to get seated, to order, and to pay. I did see 3 different wait staff helping nearby tables though. I'm willing to come back and try this spot out again though because I simply could've ordered the wrong dishes. A large and impressive display featuring thick cuts of Sashimi, Maki rolls and two sushi rolls. While the cuts were generous, fish quality was very average especially the very large cuts of hamachi. Overall, a very average meal at Sushi Oyama. There are higher quality options though the budget seekers may find the rolls a good option here. I'd skip the Sashimi. Pretty spacious, service is fast and good, and washrooms are really well maintained. Things to note: parking in the back is shared with about 8 other establishments, so you might have to park on the side streets (either meter parking nearby, or free street parking about a block or two away). Treated like cattle -- BEWARE! I had not seen my friends for many months so had lots to catch up on. After eating, the waitress angrily snatched our plates away, slammed the bill on the table, and told us in an extremely agitated tone that we'd been there for 2 hrs. and they were closing. We were in shock because we had no idea of the time limit before; they have a ton of signage everywhere, but not about the time limit. I went to check the waiting area to see if there was a lineup, but not a single person was waiting. She said they were closing, yet there were so many people around us still dining; there was no reason to treat us like we were asking for free food. She then brought a sign to us saying that the dining limit was 1 hour. She should have told us about the 1 hour time limit BEFORE the time limit was up, not keep in silence then, explode at us after we'd been there for 2 hours. They should put that signage on every table to be sure that people see it. The waitress was an older lady, and the owner, which is surprising because you'd think that she'd appreciate her customers. This is my go-to sushi spot when I'm in the Metrotown area. My top favourites are the Las Vegas Roll, Green Tea Zarusoba, and Mangodise Roll. I noticed in recent visits that they changed the regular salmon roll. Instead of a full piece, it seems to be cut up the way they do their spicy tuna and salmon rolls. The rice doesn't seem as fresh as it used to be either. Still love this place but because I frequent it, these changes are very noticeable to me. read more

Very disappointing. I've been going to Oyama Sushi for years and the last 4 times were bad. I thought, I'll give them another chance and then another... and another. Finally it's over. They have gone downhill and the sushi is sloppy. The rolls aren't rolled properly, the tuna is falling out, the fish is cut terribly, and their rice is soft/falling apart. Been here a few times and each experience was very different. It was either the service or the lack of consistency on the food. But last night wasn't so bad. The Aburi Grand Slam came first. It was pretty good. Each fish was a nice big slice but they could've held back on the sauce and rice. There was a bit too much. Next, we got the Spicy Salmon Sashimi and holy it was a lot! The sauce is much darker and spicier than other places. We didn't get to finish it but there was an equal amount of cucumber and salmon in it. Super good! Then we got the Thunderbolt Roll. It was like eating two different rolls. You can't eat it at one bite, you have to eat it separately. It was pretty much an avocado roll and on top, deep fried seaweed wrapped around spicy salmon and cream cheese. It was good but I would rather have it all inside the roll and be able to eat it at one bite. And surprisingly last, we got out Agedashi Tofu. It actually took awhile for it to come and I expected it to be the first thing to be served. At least it was fresh and super hot. However, while 40-50 minutes of waiting and eating. We didn't get any refills on our teas even when we asked. We also asked for water and I guess they forgot. We were chatting so we let over an hour pass by then we asked for our bill. We asked two people to get our bill because the first person forgot which took almost 15-20 minutes to get. It was near closing time so we didn't understand why it took so long to get our bill. I know most Japanese restaurants here are owned and operated by Koreans and Chinese so I'm usually not going to find truly authentic Japanese food and I'm fine with that. There are some really great finds out there. My first clue that this dining experience was not going to be good was when the server drops off packets of Chinese soy sauce. If you're eating at a Japanese restaurant acceptable soy sauce brands would be Yamada or Kikkoman not the kind I get with my Chinese take out. It may seem like a lame complaint but it really makes a difference in the taste. I also don't expect to find a twist on a Japanese dish with Korean or Chinese ingredients thrown in. I ordered the beef don and half of it was the glass noodles you find in Korean dishes served in a styrofoam container. In fact all of the dishes we ordered, and we dined in, were served in a styrofoam container. It was cheap, lazy, and ridiculous. The only good thing about this visit was the service. Very considerate and efficient. But as far as the food, Oyama has dropped off my radar as far as a destination for Japanese cuisine. read more

My spicy tuna cone tasted fishy, the tempura tasted super doughy and had zero crunch to it. And worst of all we found a dead fly in our hot sake. I show up at 6:10 and she says, your pick up is not until 6:25. I ask if I can pay and wait outside. She says yes. I pay and give a 10% tip. I wait outside with two other people (during a heatwave). She brings out their orders within 10 mins. 6:55 and I'm still waiting (this is 30 mins beyond the 6:25 she said after I got there and 1 hr and 25 mins since the order was placed). I go inside and there's 6 people waiting for pick up. They ignore all the pick ups and service the dine ins that arrive after us. They're taking new phone orders and telling them a 35 minute wait (good luck). 7:10 a couple comes in to be seated and I speak up saying we've been waiting before them and we want service first. She asks my name and finds my order slip and just starts throwing boxes in a bag that were on the counter and hands it to me. I ask if it was for sure my order and she says yes yes yes. I take the bag and walk out. She comes bursting out the door and down the stairs yelling that I haven't paid, I have to pay! I show her my receipt $73.40 and she says no that's not correct the bill is $66.xx and I have to pay. Now I'm pissed so I put the food on the stairs and say I want a refund. She's yelling at someone in the back kitchen and finally gives me $70 cash (I paid with debit). I say, I paid $73.40 and she's arguing that the bill was only $66. I say, because I was nice and gave you a tip when I originally paid!!!! I finally leave at 7:25 (1 hr and 55 mins after phoning the order and 1 hr and 15 mins after arriving and waiting patiently there) with $73.40 in cash plus sweaty from waiting in a heatwave and frustrated from the experience. This is also after giving them a second chance because we had a similar experience a few years ago while dining in and waiting at our table for over an hour for food to arrive. No more chances! I rarely write reviews but today I am extremely disappointed with this meal. We ordered for pickup and they told us that it was a 50 min wait, which was extremely long but considering Covid regulations and the recent heat wave, I try not to get impatient. I got there exactly at 50 mins and no one was at the door so I stood and waited an extra 10 min. The restaurant wasn't that busy as there is only 1 other person waiting at the door that's also trying to get the waitress's attention. I tried to be open minded as there are only 2 waitress serving and picking up calls. Finally, I got their attention and they weren't able to find my order. They frantically talking amongst themselves and quickly started making my order. I was so tired and hungry at this point and finally after 15 mins they gave me my order. I went home ASAP as it was already 8:30pm and I still haven't had dinner. I opened up my salmon sashimi and it looks like it's going bad with a white sheen on the outside of each piece of salmon. The sound trap roll is even more disappointing considering how little filling is in it. I broke open a roll and found the smallest piece of shrimp that had more panko than shrimp. Lastly, the negitoro roll had a piece of fish bone. It's a deal breaker for me to have fish bones in raw sushi. All in all, I am super disappointed and dissatisfied with tonight's dinner. Giving a 3-star because the waiter side-swiped my friend's tea into his arm and his sleeve got wet (hopefully no stain). The waiter was super apologetic and gave us a discount. It wasn't a big deal; the tea has been sitting there for a while so it's not hot. I'm not sure I would have acted as calm if the tea landed on me instead. Speaking of service, I really like the buzzer button at each table that can be used to call for service as there are no interruptions during conversations. They're quick to respond! Their menu had plenty of special rolls - we got the black dragon roll and volcano roll. They offer high-quality Sushi and service in an old mansion in Burnaby which is a great place to try for something different. I would say that the environment far surpasses the quality of the food and the service but all around it's a great experience for something different if you're used to going to the small classic sushi bars. There's lots of open spaces and really high quality premium sushi rolls in one section of the menu. I was there with my family yesterday and we had a lot of delicious rolls including the Yam Yam roll which was excellent. Their salads are also very nice and traditional with very high in fiber and iron I would recommend the spinach salad with peanut sauce or seaweed salad. One thing that was a little less than impressive yesterday was the servers somewhat lack of patience and disappointment when I asked to remove the mayonnaise from the sushi. I know that they just drizzle it on top and it's just a matter of not doing it but she seemed upset that I was asking which is poor service in my books, I said that they have done it before but she did not even check with the cooks if it was possible.
