Sushi Oyama in Burnaby has been serving the community for more than two decades. It is located inside The Andy Johnson House, also known as Glenedward, which was built in 1912. The heritage architecture gives the restaurant an iconic look that instantly stands out on Kingsway. The original walls, brick gate posts, and garden elements have been carefully preserved, adding a charming historic atmosphere to the dining experience. We love how this landmark blends early Burnaby history with the energy of a modern sushi spot. The menu is extensive, featuring sushi rolls, sashimi plates, donburi bowls, and a wide variety of bento boxes. Most bento boxes range from $10 to $30 and include miso soup. We visited during their promotion and ordered the Double Cali Bento Box for only $9.99, which is an unbelievable deal in Burnaby or Vancouver. The box includes two full orders of California rolls, a fresh green salad, two pieces of tempura, two crispy spring rolls, and a side of edamame. The portion size is generous, and the value is hard to beat, especially if you enjoy simple and comforting Japanese food. If you are looking for affordable sushi rolls or a well-priced bento box meal, Sushi Oyama is one of the best choices in Burnaby. The heritage house ambiance makes the visit feel special, and the menu always has something for everyone. Food: 4/5 Should Try! Food portions are reasonable, was fulfilling and taste great, for a small staff, efficient and fast. Love the old building style, bright from windows and warm dimmed lights gives the atmosphere feel like old Japanese style restaurant.

I like to call this place "Haunted Sushi". It is located inside a giant mansion with a very long dark history. You may want to google that house. A friend been here couple times and he agrees that each time he went the taste was very inconsistent but before he went with me, the sushi or food that he had here was not bad. We were a party of two and we showed up on a Sunday. We ordered couple items to share: -Red Dynamite Roll -Red Yam Roll -BBQ Salmon Gama Food portion size was pretty good. The red dynamite roll and red yam roll both tasted the same (used the same sauce). However, what I didn't like about them was that they were drenched in sauce. I couldn't taste anything other than the sauce. Also I personally don't like sweet sushi. The salmon gama was not bad. Portion size was good. I just wished it was not that dry. Service is a hit and miss. I felt that we had to haunt or find the server in order to get serve. The reason for this is because of the table layout. There are too many deadspots making it very difficult for the server to spot us. I don't think I will be back any time soon.

Nothing like some funeral home sushi to get one's blood moving. Yes, this place used to be a funeral home, and I'm guessing some rich guy's house before that. Parking is available on the side streets behind Kingsway. The place is still proportioned like a house from the early 1900s, which makes it a bit awkward. The front counter is tiny, and the dining area is spread out among the different rooms. Staff were friendly. Buddy and I tried the Party tray A. The rolls are the typical small (normal?) ones, but the nigiri have half the rice compared to basically every other place out there. See photo. Buddy and I looked at each other, and we both knew we were looking at another dinner right after finishing here. This thing was polished off in 15 minutes, and yes, both of us left hungry. Ugh. Knock 1 star off for not so good value. Quality was decent but nothing spectacular. Honestly for the price I'd rather go to Sushi Garden nearby.

I came here for a dinner a month ago. This place was quieter with lesser people in the restaurant. I've seen 3-4 servers working here in the past, but there was only 1 server working that day. We ordered Tonkatsu ($15.80) and Rainbow Roll ($16.90) it was so good. Tonkatsu was freshly made. It was tender and crispy. The food came with rice and salad on the side. Rainbow Roll was good as usual. We shared 2 items for 2 people. Price has gone up, but the food was still enjoyable. Service was fast and efficient.

This place has been around so long! I love the house setting and it always feels like a very inviting place to go to for Japanese. Not as busy as it used to be so it's easy to get a table. My nieces loved the udon and tempura. The quality of the sushi has gone a bit downhill lately or maybe the sushi in vancouver has just gotten better... neverthelsss, Oyama is still one of our go to late night for sushi.

    The kids loved it!

This is a lovely restaurant in an old house! The ambiance is comfortable and clean. The service was friendly and efficient. It has an extensive menu with a wide variety of dishes. We went as a family and had a wonderful experience. The Chicken Teriyaki was excellent. The sushi was fresh and tasty. The ramen with vegetables was very good also. We do recommend!

Menu reads "Price subject to change without notice".

Food is alright, but their service is truly bizarre. Their menu has a warning that reads "price subject to change without notice" and they charge you whatever they feel like. They don't tell you about price changes when you're ordering; you only find out when you get the bill. I doubt that's legal, but I also doubt that you'll bother taking them to small claims court to recover $20, so you're likely to just eat the random price change tax if you decide to dine here and they feel like overcharging you by $20.

I have been to this place for several years already. They have delicious aburi sushi. Go for their special roles. I like their awesome role Their sushi combo is the same quality like other sushi restaurant. Sashimi is good, but there are other places with more fresh sashimi.

I remember the restaurant was great years ago. A lot seem to have changed recently and I was pretty disappointed. First of all, their prices are SO high for what you get. Same items at a high end restaurant by the waters costs less and the ingredients taste so much more fresh than here. Which leads to my second point that their sashimi were very cold, the tuna tasted fishy, and the octopus was very tough. I did like the tiny shrimps. In general the sauces were too overpowering and salty. I mean yes, they taste good and go well with the dishes - especially the volcano roll. But there's too much sauce everywhere and we were drinking water all night after. It was a shame that the sauces were all we could taste on the aburi platter and I couldn't even finish them. Service is good and they filled my tea without me having to ask for it. However, for the same price we paid, there are many other restaurants we could have gone to with higher quality dishes.

This place is pretty popular and can be crowded during lunch hours. The food is ok, decent with a big selection of choices. My colleague likes the spicy chirashi which is basically adding the Korean spicy sauce (gochujang) to the bowl. Lunch has bento boxes at affordable prices, letting you have a bit of everything. Nothing really stand out for me here, but if I were to dine here, I will try to go during the off peak hours. Parking can be a pain as it is quite hard to find available spots for both the lot and street parking (paid and free).

Service 3/5: Difficult to understand & lack of direction. Our waitress asked us if we needed anything after we were finished with our plate & drinks. There weren't too many people in the resto. We had to ask numerous times what the waitress was saying too. Please speak up especially when a mask is donned. Food 4/5: Standard Udon - Nothing more or less. Chicken Karaage - Small portion for its price and not too much meat. A bit salty. However... Plenty of Sushi choices which are delicious. Drinks 3/5: No beer on draught and not too many choices.

Stomach telling you should try for some Japanese cuisine? looking to hook up with a bento box for lunch? Well you should try this place when your having those days. This location is a nice size which resembles a large house. There is a presence of a Korean flare to it. The prices are quite reasonable. I ordered the chicken bento box and four pieces of unagi - which is bbq eel. What can I say I was hungry :p The chicken bento box comes with miso soup and a salad. Included in box itself - comes with couple pieces of adegashi tofu, edamame steam beans, four California rolls, large portion of chicken teriyaki and rice, mixed tempura, and couple pieces of oranges. I have to admit the teriyaki sauce is quite tasty as well all the other elements that make up this bento box. Service is quite good as our waiter ensured we had enough tea or water. He also checked if we satisfied with our order. Overall the prices are quite decent and reasonable. Great lunch getaway... Parking could be a challenge at times during the afternoon and be careful as you can't park between the hours of 3-6 on Kingsway - you could be towed as a forewarning. However free finding in general could be hard - even during the lunch/dinner hours. Happy eating

First off, always bring a jacket here even if it's hot outside. The AC here is terribly cold. As regulars here for decades, sometimes with mild turbulent experiences, this specific visit highlighted a real decline in how the restaurant operates. We arrived close to sunset on a cool evening, yet the dining room was uncomfortably cold with air blowing directly on our backs. Staff can be seen to the side rubbing their upper arms trying to warm themselves. Patrons near us (tables really close) also expressed discontent with the chilly air and food. I asked a server if they could adjust the temperature twice. Finally, I got up and went to the counter and in broken English, the younger woman just shrugged and muttered that the AC was off, even though cold air was clearly still blowing--surely their HVAC system has a heater. After sitting there in a really cold dining room freezing and hearing other diners continue to complain, we decided to walk out without ordering. The cashier gave a completely scripted, insincere apology on our way out. It feels like they simply do not care about the dine-in experience or the tips customers leave anymore. I feel customers need to be more vocal and use their wallets as a method of approval. I also noticed a newly posted sign saying they now close between 3 and 4 pm for staff breaks, which seems to point to obvious staffing issues. There's way too many Sushi restaurants competing for business in the Highgate Metrotown area, this one has fallen off the rails. And I can't imagine how bad management is with these kinds of working conditions.
