Just a little diamond in the rough...then again the area is super nice. Before we walked inside, we were expecting more of a stereotypical mass seating sushi restaurant, but I was glad to be wrong. Probably a max of 20-24 customers at a time and it was very intimate. Like many of the restaurant stalls in Japan. It was very cultural and the staff spoke Japanese. The service was amazing as there were on their toes to make sure we were happy. There was no designated waiter/waitress, the team work was perfect. The food was made to perfect and the freshness of the uni and salmon were as if they were fishing it from the back door. We ordered some miso soup, fried squid, salmon nigiri and sashimi, uni, salmon belly nigiri and of course a couple of classic beers. Salmon nigiri and sashimi was generously cut and amazingly fresh. With the temperature perfectly chilled to it melting in your mouth, it was as if we were in Japan. The Uni was even more amazing!! Properly chilled and the creamy texture was beyond perfect. Salmon belly nigiri was succulent and writing this review makes me want to take that 2 hr commute for another round. I forgot to mention the fried squid/calimari. Not many will understand this but the tempura batter was perfectly dipped and the tender texture was amazing. It was not out of a bag, it was freshly cut, battered, and fried there. They were great once we arrived. We ordered and the food came out so quick! There weren't many customers so maybe that's why. The food was truly so delicious. Then, we the sashimi platter and queen platter for 2. The sashimi I really like especially the tuna belly and salmon. You really only need to get the queen platter because that you will fill you up. The only difference is I was paying the bill and never realized how costly it is compared to other good quality sushi places. I had a reservation that i made over the phone and when i went in they were busy and did not greet me or even acknowledge me. it was busy so I can understand what it's like but after waiting 10 minutes of just standing there, I walked outside to wait and when I saw a couple approach (no reservation) they got seated immediately. Then my party had to wait until another table left to make room for us. Pretty sure my table was given away. Once we finally sat, our waitresses were nice and I could tell were just super super busy. Started off with whitetail sashimi appetizer and it was good, the ponzu sauce it was in was delightful. The scallop and Shrimp entree cost roughly $28, we had not gotten salad or soup with it. It was expensive and not as good as I remembered. The spicy tuna roll was standard and good. The two pieces of white tuna were not the best especially for the price, but it's my favorite fish so I have a high standard. The dynamite roll was a solid 4/10. I asked for a recommendation and she said this one. I knew it would be creamy but not this much. I am not a fan of cream or overloaded sauce on rolls but this was exactly that. I could not taste any fish. Only cream or mayo or something sweet. I would not recommend if you want to be able to taste fish in your sushi rolls. The extra waiting (10 mins) was not a big deal but the dynamite roll and the scallop & shrimp really impacted my recent visit. Maybe if we had ordered one of their floats and shared an appetizer it would have been more pleasant. The place is definitely a little smaller so finding seating is hard sometimes, but go at like super weird hours or earlier so you can sit and enjoy all the fish and noodle goodness. The service here is amazing, our waitress came to check in on us frequently and helped us answer questions about the menu. The restaurant is small though with not a lot of tables available. We got the volcanic mountain to start and it was delicious! It was fried which added a really nice touch to the sushi roll. Then for our main, we got the Queen with spicy tuna for our roll. It was great for 2 if there you're with someone with a big appetite. All of the pieces are high quality. My only complaint is that there was too much wasabi in the nigiri. Feel like you could depend on this place for a good meal but I was surprised it has 4.5 stars since I wasn't particularly mindblown and it is a little pricey (but then again, it is sushi). Do most places in Fairfax need more space for these asian restaurants? It seems Fairfax is the hub of good asian spots, but most of the places I've been lately are quickly crowded, especially on a Friday night. I've been here a few times now and this restaurant is so consistent with some of the best tasting, fresh, quality sushi I've had. I always get the crunch infinity roll. It is to die for! I also always order a house salad and miso soup to accompany and they are both superb as well. I didn't go with 5 stars here because the service could be better. The food was quick to be served. I thought that the shrimp tempura roll was quite good, but it needed a little more sauce in my opinion. And I really liked the rainbow roll, and thought it was quite fresh and tasty. The Salmon bento box was pretty good. The tempura was super crispy and I loved how light the batter was, and I thought the box was presented quite nicely. The California rolls were also pretty tasty and fresh, and I liked how the teriyaki salmon came with extra teriyaki sauce. Dropped by here for lunch while in the area and will say it's a great place to go to IF you're nearby. The service is phenomenal, I sat at the bar since it was only me but they offered a table as soon as one was available (I declined just because I didn't want to take a table just for myself). The servers made sure to answer any questions that I had, and I never had to ask for a drink refill. The lunch chirashi is good, tastes fresh, but I wouldn't say it justifies driving out to Fairfax if you aren't already there. But the lunch prices and portions are fair. Again, if you're nearby I'd definitely recommend it. But if you're outside of Fairfax I don't think it's worth the drive. I should also mention the inside is small so it fills up quickly! read more
