Donkatsu pork cutlet with egg and onions over rice

Not fancy, but well loved and authentic Japanese. They don't advertise and seems quiet on outside but always busy. We have liked everything we tried from sushi, tempuras, udon, and katsu. Have never tried the ramen but we probably should give it a shot to see how it is.

The service there was amazing and the lady's were sooo nice. After ordering we received out food pretty quickly even though it seemed pretty crowded in there. We ordered a variety of sushi and nigiri combos which all tasted pretty fresh. I really like the yellowtail nigiri's they had. Everything was nice and soft.

We got one of the platters for takeout, and some of it was not worth as some rolls were just avocado and I wanted more variety. It was good for what it was, but I definitely wanted to try other things. Service was on time.

Just discovered this Japanese owned and operated sushi restaurant in Fairfax. I came on a Friday evening with a large group of friends. If you are planning on coming with a big group; i highly recommend reserving the private rooms in the back area. Staff was very friendly and was conversing with our group throughout the night. Super attentive and great customer service. We ordered an array of sashimi and nigiri and everything tasted so fresh! The toro just melts in your mouth especially. This place also gives REAL fresh wasabi... not the typical stuff that comes in a tube. It tasted slightly mild at first with a burst at the end. I really enjoyed trying real wasabi for the first time. I am happy i tried out this place and looking forward to coming back!

My favorite Japanese restaurant in town! I keep coming back because the sushi quality is one of the best! I recommended Blue Ocean to my friends too and they all loved it! I like ordering Teishoku with some fish as this is something hard to find in other Japanese restaurants. The service is always good. I recommend making reservations in advance especially on the weekends as there are limited seatings.

Duck curry udon and clam miso soup

I came here with my partner and we got the chef's special sushi, kamonamban(duck curry udon), and clam miso soup. The sushi was pretty good for the price, but I would not recommend the duck curry udon. I felt it was lacking in flavor. The miso soup was also alright, but I probably wouldn't get it again. The dinner rush had just started after we got there so service was a little slow. We were sitting in the corner so I think they might've forgotten about us sometimes and we had to ask for water. I think I might've gone on an off day because I have friends who love this place. I might come back to try it again but I wouldn't go out of my way.

Blue Ocean was one of our favorite Japanese places in NOVA and I enjoyed the katsudon there it was so good.

I love how fresh and good the quality of fish is at Blue Ocean. This quaint spot in Fair City Mall is one of my favorite spots, especially for the lunch set. It comes with so much food! I especially love the salmon!! The service is quick, and they do a good job keeping the tables clean and service running.

Love that this Fairfax staple has been thriving all these years! I remember coming here growing up and recently came back for a family year after over a decade. We all got different sushi orders and everyone enjoyed their meal. The fish was fresh and well presented. I ordered one of the chirashis and loved it, it was the perfect amount and mix of various pieces. I won't let another decade roll by without returning!

We went in for lunch on this cold January afternoon for lunch. We ordered the chirashi and an uni sushi which was a special with two hot green teas. The chirashi was good, but there are better options with more variety at other places. Half way through lunch, I was out of tea. Our server was busy so and others just walked by and didn't check on us. Other places in the area at least walk over with more tea or ask. Araki Sushi is great at making sure tea is hot and filled. So as I was paying the bill, I asked for a refill before we went out in the cold. That's when we were told it would be $2 for a cup, the first cup is free. I was told that the organic green tea prices went up so that's why it would be $2 per cup for a refill. I get it, prices have gone up everywhere but why ignore us until the end when our cups were empty and at the edge of the table (hint to staff). Poor handling and customer service. We won't be back and I hate to give bad reviews for small independent places but this could have been handled so much better by staff. Service by staff needs a revamp.

Blue Ocean is our favorite Japanese restaurant in Northern Virginia. The chefs have been there for over 30 years and their food is authentic. Ambience - It is a small izakaya-like restaurant in Pickett road. The interior looks dated but it feels cozy. Service - Most of the servers are Koreans or Japanese who speak basic English. They work very efficiently as the lunch/dinner rush hour draws in crowds. I'd highly recommend making reservations to secure a table. Food - The menu is big. They do suhi/sashimi, ramen, chirashi, curry etc I never get bored of this place as there are so many options. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for comfy and delicious Japanese food!

Karen L.

The fish was super fresh and very good cuts. I really liked the chefs special and the toro don was a special for $22! The only complaint is service is a bit slow but worth the wait if you have time!

Those waitresses were rude and loud. They were more attentive to customers other than Asian. The food portions were smaller too.

The place was filling up and the ambiance reminds me of a traditional bustling noodle house - perfect for the cold snap we were experiencing at the time. We got hot and sour noodle soup, sichuan beef noodle soup, and an order of their pork soup dumplings. Portions are generous and prices are fair, it's easy to become a regular here if you live nearby. The hot and sour noodle soup is as advertised - just enough spice to complement the sour, but not overwhelm to make it feel like mala. It's served, as expected, with glass noodles, some bak choi, and some pork slices. Nothing spectacular but par for the course. The sichuan beef noodle foon soup was slight notch better. The broth gives really warm vibe and you can tell it's been brothing for a long time. Again just the right amount of spicy to make you keep slurping for more. The noodles were average, chewy, but not bouncy. Also comes with a healthy amount beef slices and bak choi. Again - a great noodle soup bowl but nothing jaw dropping. Soup dumplings were fantastic, however. The pork definitely has its own marinade and the soup is flavorful. The dumpling skin is well constructed and complemented well with the noodle soups - especially in cold weather. tldr; solid noodle soup spot, they seem to be consistent and really hits the mark when you're in a for your noodle fix. Soup dumplings are probably a must get side dish with whatever your main is

The from scratch broth, pleasant aroma from sour bamboo, crunchy string beans (wish there was an option to add!!) were phenomenal. Plus the tender yet collagenous beef shank cooked to perfection was phenomenal. Absolutely stick to your bones without the usual heaviness with big spicy noodle soups. No MSG headaches here, all the flavor is homegrown. The stinky tofu was also fried to perfection, with a side of Taiwanese kimchi. All the food was thoughtfully prepared and executed. We had our noodles fall apart and Yan corrected it immediately. She took the time to talk about her story of how she opened the restaurant originally to support her daughters college, her natural gift at cooking, and how her recipe was developed originally from a family one to what it is today. Just the warmest, most welcoming people. Even short staffed, we were impressed at how faultless and prepared from the heart the food was, warm and inviting the service, and leaving feeling like we just ate at our favorite auntie's house. One of the highlights of the night was meeting the owner, Jason. We bonded over our shared Cantonese backgrounds and even got to meet his aunt, who was visiting from California and happened to be sitting next to us. It made the whole experience feel incredibly welcoming and personal. We ordered the Dynamite Roll, which was a solid choice with 8 generous pieces, and the Szechuan spicy wontons, which were juicy with just the right amount of heat. If you visit, definitely grab a seat at the bar. The bartenders are friendly, engaging, and really add to the experience. We were treated to a complimentary shot of Jäger with Jason and even got to sample their Lychee Pearl cocktail because the bartender had made an extra. The cocktails really stood out. Instead of masking everything with sugary juices, they use extracts and creative techniques to build balanced drinks that complement the flavors beautifully. Jason also mentioned that their cocktail specials change every month, so we already told him we'll be back regularly to see what new creations he comes up with.

For our meal, we ordered a feast of the Chosun Hwaro Combo (Medium), Baekdusan bulgogi, japchae, and bibim naengmyun. The meat quality here is extremely PREMIUM and every bite was super juicy, tender, and packed with flavor! I cannot stop thinking about the Baekdusan bulgogi because it was truly a savory MEAT MOUNTAIN. Our kind server gave us a pro tip to mix the sauce with rice. That completely changed the dish for me! The sauce soaking into the rice made it unbelievably rich and satisfying. I loved that the combos come with steamed egg and soybean paste stew, which were comforting sides alongside all the grilled meat and ban chan (kimchi, radish, etc) already at the table. As for my noodle dishes, I usually never order japchae, but I did and this one ended up being the best japchae of my life. It was PACKED with so many flavorful meat and vegetable toppings. This was my first time here, so I'm not sure if this is the norm, but I felt like we repeatedly had to ask for sauces, side dishes, etc. I'm not sure if meats normally aren't served with sauce, here, but most Korean bbq places I've been to would serve them without us having to ask.
