Love sushi san happy hour deal. They have the best sushi and it does get pretty crowded here. The ambiance is nice inside but the lychee drink we got was alright not what we expected
Sushi San is a great spot with tasty dishes and great service! Vibes are fun and casual. A lot of unique dishes in addition to the traditional sushi you can get at any sushi spot.

Came for the express lunch deal! It was $21 for miso soup and the choice of any 3 menu options. On a food tour for lunch, we decided to go to sushi San and its sister restaurant, ramen San where we got one express lunch deal at each restaurant. We opted for the tuna crispy rice, yuzu yellowtail, and Vietnamese pork rice bowl. The tuna crispy rice was your typical, delicious dish. The yuzu yellowtail rolls came with a yuzu dipping sauce, very fresh fish. The Vietnamese pork rice bowl was flavorful and the meat was tender. The service was great and the food came out sooo fast. Would absolutely come back
I really like their express lunch. For $21 you start off with miso soup and you can pick three items out of a list of food options. There were plenty of options to choose from the list. I had the spicy tuna roll, the salmon roll, and their spicy tuna and avocado bowl. Food was really good and fresh and the portion size was more than enough. I would definitely come back.
Came here with a reservation for dinner on a Saturday night and it was buzzing- def get a reservation. Started with some apps (crispy rice is always good) and drinks (Coconut Negroni was good) before getting to the main event of Nigiri. So apparently this spot imports all their fish fresh from Japan, but tell me why you would serve a tuna like this?! I'm gonna leave it at that. Scallop nigiri was great though, so 3 stars for the scallop alone.
Obsessed with Sushi-San. Their rolls are so fresh, and select ones are only $6 during HH! The spicy tuna and the avocado crunch are both a 5/5! Thoroughly enjoyed their crispy rice as well, solid 4.7/5. Only thing this restaurant could use is a patio! Dim lit dining area. Service was just okay. Busy Thursday HH!
Easy to make reservations on OpenTable. Friendly service! The inside was open and inviting~ Food was decent! Bang bang cauliflower was breaded so well and tasty. I had some handrolls which were solid as well. The crispy rice was not as crispy as I wanted and wasn't as warm as I wanted it :( the fish for the nigiri was decent as well Street parking but walkable from Grand station. 2 single occupant bathrooms in the back.
I've been to a hand full of sushi places and this is definitely up there when ig comes to quality of the food & drinks. Although we sat down fairly quick it took a while to get an order in. I had the edamame and wagyu. Wagyu was a bit chewy but super flavorful and had more tender parts to it. I will be back to try the rolls!
RESERVATION RECOMMENDED! This place was very popular so if you don't like to wait, call advance for reservation . It is very crowded even on the weekdays. The sushi is very fresh and the rolls are tasty too. Our waiter was very attentive. He is aware of my squid/octopus sensitivity therefore he made sure he inform the chef in regard to allergies. Every entree we had ordered had a an allergy tacks on it which I thought was hilarious but highly appreciated. I am thankful they pay close attention to my needs and accommodation. My only friendly suggestion is that that they bring out the edamame beans and cucumber salad first before anything comes out since that goes well with every entree. The two items were serve last and by the time our belly was content and full, we have no urge to eat it. It was packed to go for a midnight snack.
I came here on a weekday for lunch and highly recommend it. It was not too crowded and food came out pretty quickly after ordering. I like the modern vibes of this location. Seating was comfortable. I tried their express lunch menu, which is a great option if you're here during lunch time. You get to pick 3 items from the list and I chose tako taco (a little spicy but highly recommend- one of my favorite things that day), salmon avocado (I'm not a personal fan of the Meyer lemon sauce), and tuna avocado rice bowl. Each item is smaller portioned but all together it's a substantial lunch set. I also tried the express sushi and sashimi lunch set, which comes with a delicious seaweed salad which I would order on its own as an appetizer. The lunch set comes with their "oh-my-kaze." This includes salmon, hamachi and tuna. One piece of tuna was substandard and had a big piece of sinew in it. Our server quickly switched it for another piece. The only dish I would skip is the Peking duck sizzling rice. The taste was fine- a little on the sweeter side with the hoisin sauce but the portion was more of an appetizer size. It's also not a true Peking duck, which focuses on a crispy duck skin and this dish just featured duck meat.
Wow!!! HH 7 days a week is a nice flex! Met with my new friend here Sunday and we had an amazing time! We ordered all the food off the HH menu (edamame, eggplant tempura, avocado rolls, salmon rolls and shishito peppers). I had a few old fashioneds and she had the lychee martinis. Our server was incredible, spot on and very kind and helpful. The restaurant is a nice size and the have a bar too and it is cool for families as well. We enjoyed our time!
I once came here on a weekend and it was extremely packed that I didn't get to try it. I've heard a lot of good things about this restaurant so I decided to go on a Monday afternoon and was easily seated, despite there being so many people already. It seems like a popular space to go to have drinks with your coworkers. I opted for the Express sushi and sashimi for $26 which I think was an amazing price for the two appetizers they give and the insane amount of fish they provide. While very generous, the taste of the fish and the Nigiri did not wow me enough. The fish was fresh, but there wasn't much added to emphasize the flavor of the fish. I would love to come back to try other things on their menus, such as the hand rolls and regular sushi rolls, but I don't think I'll come back for this set.

Trendy and reasonably priced sushi place in River North. Really liked the dim lit ambiance and good number of options on the menu. The place was pretty busy and we didn't have a reservation. But the wait time wasn't that long, we got a table pretty soon. We ordered Spicy Tuna sushi - loved it! It was the right amount of spicy. Also ordered Snapper Nigiri. It was my first time trying Nigiri, definitely something different with a mild taste. Lastly, we had Nama Chocolate for dessert - truffle like chocolate cubes, almost black in color. The service could have been a bit quicker, but had a nice time overall! read more

I am very satisfied with my experience at sushi-san! The staff was very attentive despite it being a very busy weekend night. When we had questions with the menu, our waiter answered all of them thoroughly and even suggested a few things for us to order. My favorites: Fatty otoro: SO GOOD! The fish tasted very fresh and left me wanting to order more D-Luxe nigiri: Great option for sharing with another friend! Every pair of nigiri was unique and delicious. My friend and I felt very full and content in the end. We also ordered the tako taco and crazy shrimp. I thought these appetizers were fairly average. The portion sizes were also smaller than we expected. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed our experience at sushi-san! I look forward to trying their other dishes. read more
Fantastic high quality sushi in downtown Chicago. Their menu includes a great variety of nigiri, combinations, and maki. They also have sizzling rice and charcoal grilled entrees. My husband and I placed a delivery order, which arrived quickly, fresh and carefully packed. Our total was around $200. The star of the meal was the Lobster California Roll, which featured big, juicy chunks of lobster and perfectly ripe avocado. I also loved the Truffle Shiitake Roll, a vegetarian roll with tangy pickled daikon and fragrant mushrooms. The Tempura Shrimp Roll was decadent, and the Seaweed Salad fresh and flavorful. I have a couple of favorites at Sushi San like the scallops sushi, taco octopus and the bibi-bop sizzler. The drinks at sushi San are unique too with the Thank You served in a to-go box. Ambiance wise I prefer the Lincoln park location over the river north as it is more vibey. Service is good at both locations read more

Great place to have sushi in Chicago. We ordered Nigiri deluxe (12 pieces) from the regular menu and OH-MY-KAZE (salmon, hamachi and tuna. 3pcs sashimi, 3pcs nigiri, 6pcs maki) from express lunch menu. Both were delicious and perfect for two people. Will be back on our next Chicago visit. Casual ambiance with very good service. read more
This was my first time going to sushi san in person (usually order and it's 10/10) and it was a PHENOMENAL experience. We went during lunch time at noon so there was no wait at all. The service was so great - we got our order within 10-15 minutes of ordering. They have prices for 5 and 10 pieces of sushi so it gives you the opportunity to try different rolls. We ordered the roasted edamames, spicy scallop roll, shrimp tempura and spicy salmon roll. Roasted edamames was a huge portion and flavored really well. This is a great lunch spot with their lunch special. I was there for a work trip and was able to grab their $17 express lunch with my boyfriend. I got the tuna trio, miso salmon bowl while the boyfriend had the tako tacos and raw tuna and avocado bowl. All lunch items come with a salad and miso soup. The tako tacos were very crunchy and delicious, but I don't know if I'd want to eat 3 of the same thing. The tuna trios were pretty creative. Between the two bowls, I preferred the miso salmon more as the raw tuna left a weird aftertaste in my mouth. We were pleasantly full after this. The services were excellent too! read more

Rating: 2.5 stars My friend and I were in the area and decided to check out the restaurant for lunch due to its high ratings. Afterwards, I found it to be pretty average and disappointing due to the high expectations we entered with. We went to the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon around 1 PM. The restaurant was fairly empty so we were given the option to pick our own spots. We were directed to check our menu swiftly. However, that was the last time the service was efficient. Even after our meal it is safe to say that I have no idea who our waiter was during the whole meal because no one person came to help us at all time during the meal nor did they introduce themselves to us as our sever. The whole service as a mess. Be it for ordering, giving us our check and/or taking our check - every task took so long to complete and only happened because we were sitting around for ages and just had to flag someone down. There would be times when we would be asking for service and people would just walk by us and ignore us it was most apparent when we were just trying to pay to get out of there. We ordered two lunch specials to share: --OH-MY-KAZE: Very small slices of fish. But they were surprisingly fresh and tasty. --EXPRESS LUNCH: We ordered the spicy salmon maki which was just meh and only provided tiny pieces of salmon and then just way too much chives and cucumber? Also the heavy handed poor of chili flakes was a bit too much and just unevenly sprinkled on. We also got the express lunch with the raw tuna and avocado bowl which actually was quite tasty and was finished quickly. Both of the lunch items came with a salad and miso soup. The salad was standard with a ginger/carrot dressing but the miso soup was atrocious- way too salty due to its dense amount of miso paste. Didn't know it was possible to mess up miso soup but here we are. Additionally, both portions of food were tiny and quite pricy. My friend and I both left the restaurant still hungry after our meal and had to go somewhere else for more food. All in all, definitely a disappointing experience. We will likely not be back the next time we are in the area. read more

From service, to ambiance, to taste you guys have nailed it!!! we were about to fly out your staff was accommodating to us in our luggage. The server was prompt and helped us with the menu we also had enough time to stop by the bar before our Uber came and your bartender was so delightful. We can't wait to come back. Sushi and hip hop?! How could I go wrong? The answer is I didn't go wrong at all--everything was right! They have lots of tasty selections and fab beats all day long. If you're in the area before 3pm they have great filling lunch special options. Overall I have never had anything bad from here. Always a great experience with wonderful service and delicious eats/drinks. This is not a typical sushi restaurant, the menu is limited, but the items they do have a pretty yummy. For apps I recommend the chicken togarashi nuggets and the crazy shrimp if you like some crunch! The aburi is a favorite for the fam (torched tuna or scallop). Sashimi is always fresh. Such an underrated happy hour spot! $6 snacks ranging from maki to shishito peppers AND drinks under $12. Happy Hour Heaven. My go-to items are the spicy tuna aburri, shishito peppers, tempura Japanese eggplant, and the spicy salmon maki. My favorite being the tempura Japanese eggplant because it's crispy, lightly sweet AND savory. The ambiance has a trendy feel with dim lighting and energetic music. The sushi here is decent! My favorite was the spicy scallop maki roll. I really like how u can choose between the number of rolls (i picked 5 & i believe u can also get the 8 count) depending on how hungry you are. The nigiris are good- i especially liked the amberjack here. The crazy shrimp tempura is also really yummy, and there wasn't too many people here around saturday at 5pm which was nice. The lunch sushi sets are such a staple for me. The sushi here is surprisingly good and fresh for a contemporary sushi spot and I love the togarashi nuggets. The lunch omakase set is a gem at $26 with cuts of lean tuna, yellowtail and salmon. Great spot to visit when you're craving an easy sushi spot downtown! read more

Honestly, I was not expecting to be as impressed with SUSHI-SAN as I was. I thought it would just be another overpriced city sushi joint but the quality of the fish, taste, and value were great. I've been for both dinner and their lunch specials and was very pleased both times. Their menu is straightforward and simple but that means the quality and consistency are on point for each of the items. The appetizers like the eggplant tempura and octopus tacos are so well seasoned and balanced, with a ton of savory flavor without being overly salty, leaving your wanting more (I could eat a whole tray of those octopus tacos)! The fish, especially the different types of tuna (lean, fatty, etc) that they offer are always fresh with satisfying portions. The maki rolls are big and have a bit more ingredients to complement the fish, like their seasoned chili powder for the spicy tuna, or their salmon avocado brightened up with a hint of lemon. The lunch special offers soup, salad, a rice and protein bowl, and an appetizer/sushi roll all for $17! If you're in the area, definitely stop by for a nice dinner or a casual meal. I had been craving sushi for sometime. I saw lobster rolls on the menu and decided this was it. My shrimp roll was amazing one of the best rolls I've had in a long time. The shrimp had so much flavor and was generously on top of my rolls. My lobster roll was disappointing...I love cilantro but the cilantro taste on this roll was overwhelming and I don't even think there was cilantro in the roll Miso soup was good it had plenty of seaweed but didn't see much tofu. The sushi is delectable! Fresh, precisely sliced and the fish to rice ratio is perfect. I had the express lunch special and taco app. It was delicious and filling-I wasn't able to finish the tacos because I was so fill and preferred the sushi. A WHOLE VIBE. This was my first experience at this restaurant and it did not disappoint. As a party of 2 we came as a walk-in on a Monday night and for a Monday it was pretty bustling. The first thing I noticed was the amazing playlist which was a good mix of 90s and early 00s hip hop and R&B. We were seated after maybe a 10-12 minute wait with no complaints since we didn't have a reservation. After looking over the menu we ordered a couple of drinks, I will say I expected the Hot Mess to be a little spicier which is my preference but I'm sure the spice level appeases most people without being offensive. The miso soup was FLAVORFUL and perfect temperature and the lobster was by far the star of the show. The portion sizes for the price was fantastic and all of the maki was amazingly fresh tasting. We chose this place because it wasn't too far from our hotel and we were meeting one of Ben's friends that was/is currently living in Chicago and this worked for her and it seemed to have good reviews. The place was busy but not any more than any other place at that time of day so it was a little annoying that we had to ask for our drinks twice while waiting for Ben's friend. I ordered the tempura shrimp which has spicy Korean mayo, and black sesame seeds though mine seem to not have the sesame seeds. Not something I would request a new one to be made for but is of note that there was only a few seeds to be seen on the entire roll, especially compared to their pictures and is one of the few ingredients. In a city with endless food options, I'd be sure the service and food were up to par. read more

This place was exactly what we were looking for when we went out for a Chicago Sushi experience while visiting the city We got a multitude of dishes and each one was phenomenal! The service was great even with the place being packed and the playlist of old school throwbacks made this restaurant the complete package. Highly recommend the brocollini salad especially if you like a sesame based dressing. The tempura japanese egg plant was an unexpected favorite - crispy outside and soft inside! The spicy tuna aburi was the perfect combo of seasoned tuna and crispy rice. My only complaint was toward the truffle shitake maki san which although I did enjoy, I didnt feel like it tasted much like mushroom or truffle mainly just radish. (which I do love but I may recommend trying a different maki san) To finish off we got the deluxe nigiri set and honestly it was SO worth it! Loved the otoro, amberjack, and scallop the most. Then you have to get dessert We got an ube mochi (ended up being our favorite dessert item), the nama chocolate (served on charcoal and sooooo soft and perfect level of bitter), and the okinawa pie (tasted like an elevated okinawa sugar cookie pie) Bottom line! Decent sushi with nice touch of shisho leaves, yuzu etc. Everything relatively fresh but nothing that stood out, several of the white fish tasted pretty bland. temperature of the sushi was a little odd with the lukewarm rice. Pretty busy at 9pm and slow. read more
