I am very satisfied with my experience at sushi-san! The staff was very attentive despite it being a very busy weekend night. When we had questions with the menu, our waiter answered all of them thoroughly and even suggested a few things for us to order. My favorites: Fatty otoro: SO GOOD! The service was so great - we got our order within 10-15 minutes of ordering. They have prices for 5 and 10 pieces of sushi so it gives you the opportunity to try different rolls. We ordered the roasted edamames, spicy scallop roll, shrimp tempura and spicy salmon roll. Roasted edamames was a huge portion and flavored really well. This is a great lunch spot with their lunch special. I was there for a work trip and was able to grab their $17 express lunch with my boyfriend. I got the tuna trio, miso salmon bowl while the boyfriend had the tako tacos and raw tuna and avocado bowl. All lunch items come with a salad and miso soup. The tako tacos were very crunchy and delicious, but I don't know if I'd want to eat 3 of the same thing. The tuna trios were pretty creative. Afterwards, I found it to be pretty average and disappointing due to the high expectations we entered with. We went to the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon around 1 PM. Even after our meal it is safe to say that I have no idea who our waiter was during the whole meal because no one person came to help us at all time during the meal nor did they introduce themselves to us as our sever. Be it for ordering, giving us our check and/or taking our check - every task took so long to complete and only happened because we were sitting around for ages and just had to flag someone down. There would be times when we would be asking for service and people would just walk by us and ignore us it was most apparent when we were just trying to pay to get out of there. We ordered two lunch specials to share: --OH-MY-KAZE: Very small slices of fish. But they were surprisingly fresh and tasty. --EXPRESS LUNCH: We ordered the spicy salmon maki which was just meh and only provided tiny pieces of salmon and then just way too much chives and cucumber? Also the heavy handed poor of chili flakes was a bit too much and just unevenly sprinkled on. We also got the express lunch with the raw tuna and avocado bowl which actually was quite tasty and was finished quickly. Both of the lunch items came with a salad and miso soup. The salad was standard with a ginger/carrot dressing but the miso soup was atrocious- way too salty due to its dense amount of miso paste. Didn't know it was possible to mess up miso soup but here we are. Additionally, both portions of food were tiny and quite pricy. My friend and I both left the restaurant still hungry after our meal and had to go somewhere else for more food. All in all, definitely a disappointing experience. A WHOLE VIBE. This was my first experience at this restaurant and it did not disappoint. As a party of 2 we came as a walk-in on a Monday night and for a Monday it was pretty bustling. The first thing I noticed was the amazing playlist which was a good mix of 90s and early 00s hip hop and R&B. We were seated after maybe a 10-12 minute wait with no complaints since we didn't have a reservation. After looking over the menu we ordered a couple of drinks, I will say I expected the Hot Mess to be a little spicier which is my preference but I'm sure the spice level appeases most people without being offensive. Honestly, I was not expecting to be as impressed with SUSHI-SAN as I was. I thought it would just be another overpriced city sushi joint but the quality of the fish, taste, and value were great. I've been for both dinner and their lunch specials and was very pleased both times. Their menu is straightforward and simple but that means the quality and consistency are on point for each of the items. The appetizers like the eggplant tempura and octopus tacos are so well seasoned and balanced, with a ton of savory flavor without being overly salty, leaving your wanting more (I could eat a whole tray of those octopus tacos)! The fish, especially the different types of tuna (lean, fatty, etc) that they offer are always fresh with satisfying portions. The maki rolls are big and have a bit more ingredients to complement the fish, like their seasoned chili powder for the spicy tuna, or their salmon avocado brightened up with a hint of lemon. The lunch special offers soup, salad, a rice and protein bowl, and an appetizer/sushi roll all for $17! If you're in the area, definitely stop by for a nice dinner or a casual meal. The spicy tuna aburi was the perfect combo of seasoned tuna and crispy rice. My only complaint was toward the truffle shitake maki san which although I did enjoy, I didnt feel like it tasted much like mushroom or truffle mainly just radish. (which I do love but I may recommend trying a different maki san) To finish off we got the deluxe nigiri set and honestly it was SO worth it! Loved the otoro, amberjack, and scallop the most. We chose this place because it wasn't too far from our hotel and we were meeting one of Ben's friends that was/is currently living in Chicago and this worked for her and it seemed to have good reviews. The place was busy but not any more than any other place at that time of day so it was a little annoying that we had to ask for our drinks twice while waiting for Ben's friend. I ordered the tempura shrimp which has spicy Korean mayo, and black sesame seeds though mine seem to not have the sesame seeds. Not something I would request a new one to be made for but is of note that there was only a few seeds to be seen on the entire roll, especially compared to their pictures and is one of the few ingredients. We really enjoyed this place. It's somewhere between specialty rolls & nigiri place crossed with izakaya bites and popular & trendy pan-Asian cooked menu items. We stuck with specialty rolls and izakaya items since we were going family style. For izakaya items, the tako taco (octopus taco) was the best. The tempura eggplant (which it wasn't a cream sauce) was good, and friends enjoyed their version of the chicken karage, which in my opinion was more southern fried than Japanese fried. The rolls were also good. The unagi quality and how it was cooked exceeded my expectations and we really enjoyed the yuzu salmon roll and lobster california roll. Disappointment was the "aburi" sushi could have been way better, but my friends enjoyed the novelty of having different fish on top of the crunchy rice other than spicy tuna. (Disclaimer: It is not the true aburi nigiri method.) Additionally, the "blue fin" tuna roll was a disappointment in how it was cut. If it was real blue fin tuna, cut should have been handled better. It was smashed and a bit of a mess. The drink menu--cocktails, wine and sake lists--exceeded my expectations. Whoever curated this knows what they are doing and our server was clearly educated on pairings and taste. The ambiance is industrial hipstery but done right. The wood panels and tables and the cheeky stage lighting actually worked well and gave the place slight but poignant distinction without trying to follow a trend. I was so excited to try this place because I've only heard good things! It was definitely packed for a week day dinner and I'm sure you need reservations in advance. The inside is very dark but they use their space up very well with a lot of seating available. Between two people, we ordered two appetizers and 2 whole rolls, and 3 half rolls, and then a combo box! Oh my goodness. I can't believe the quality here. It is out of the water! It's so soft and really melts when you take a bite. I know the prices are a bit high, but I think it was worth it. We originally wanted to make reservations for a traditional omakase, but we were out of luck. Trying out and searching for various restaurants, we landed on Sushi San. All of our nigiri was extremely fresh. We were saddened to hear that they were out of uni, but we just ordered more Toro and Amberjack instead. Everything was very fresh and the sushi was properly handled. They utilized real wasabi in the plating, and everything was seasoned perfectly to pair with each fish. Besides the fancy omakase places which tend to break the bank a bit, this was probably the best sushi I've had in Chicago so far! They also do omakase but have regular sushi options as well. For drinks I got the Thank You, Enjoy which comes in a takeout box! Such a unique idea. Highly recommend this drink if you like something a bit sweeter and refreshing! I got the spicy tuna aburi as a appetizer which was pretty good. A little difficult to eat without making a mess but delicious regardless. I got the Mr. Maguro which was the tuna set. It came with various pieces of regular and fatty tuna which was AMAZING. Fatty tuna is one of my favorite cuts of sashimi and it was so fresh and melt in your mouth. I wasn't as impressed by the sushi roll that came with it but otherwise it was delicious. In fact, I think that the rolls in general need some work (reason for 4 instead of 5 stars). The seaweed is incredibly thick and chewy which deducts from the delicacy that sushi should be. The makimono options aren't super extensive and not worth the money. From what I've seen, a lot of them don't have a lot of fish in them. I would definitely recommend the San-sets over maki if you're looking a more fish-centric meal! Something else that I LOVE is that they have photos next to every menu item on their website. Every restaurant should do it, it honestly saves me so much headache and time of trying to look up photos on Yelp. Overall, great experience and can't wait to go again.
