I had high hopes for this place given the relatively expensive prices and positive reviews, but unfortunately, the sushi was a huge disappointment. It wasn't fresh, overly rice-heavy, and the overall taste was just bad. Cheap ingredients contributed to the lack of flavor. The service was okay--I'd rate it (3.5/5). Nothing exceptional, but not terrible either. On a positive note, the ambiance was quite nice (4/5), and it does have potential as a good date spot if you're more focused on the atmosphere than the food. I went to sushi-San because I love another restaurant they own, ramen-San. I was quite disappointed though. I got the beef n bop and the Hotate (scallop) nigiri. The scallop was quite good however my dad got the miso soup and said it was incredibly salty. The other rolls which you can choose from are all incredibly plain and I (a huge sushi lover) found nothing that stood out. Since I couldn't find any sushi which sounded pleasant I got the beef n bop. It was quite good but don't let the photo deceive you, the bowl is very shallow and there is not a lot of food. My parents each got sushi and both said it was very plain and not very good. The service was incredibly slow and we waited a very long time for our food. Over an hour for some plain rolls and 30 minutes for the miso soup. Our waiter consistently ignored us as well when we asked a simple request like getting soy sauce. The ambiance was ok, as we were seated far from any windows with a brick will directly next to us. As a huge sushi lover I was very disappointed that a restaurant with "sushi" in its name has such generic and plain options. You are far better off at other sushi restaurant, especially as there are countless great options in the city. read more

We love to get some appetizers, our faves are the chicken nuggets and gyoza (Lincoln Park location). Have to get some rolls - best fresh fish ever. It's buttery and delish! I like the rice bowl of Beef n Bop too. The music and vibes are perfection! Every time I bring someone to try it, they love it just as much. Service can be a bit standard most times, but sometimes you get someone who goes above and beyond with the welcome and brings out free treats that are much appreciated. I would say if you are looking for a night to celebrate a big event (eg anniversary) Momotaro or Tengoku Aburiya may be better spots (higher quality fish and more intimate vibe) but if you are looking for a night out with friends Sushi San may be your choice. Of course, if you are interested in a Omakase experience I would not pick Sushi San either, their fish is good but not quite at that standard of quality. That being said, I still recommend this place for the reasons above and I myself visit a few times a year. read more

I stopped here to grab a quick bite before heading to the airport and I am so happy I did! Vibe: I was there in the middle of the day, so I don't think I could really appreciate the ambiance. It was super comfortable and had a good vibe. Service: Service was great - super personable and hospitable. The bartender was a wealth of knowledge and I have some great tips for my next visit to the Windy City. Food: The Japanese Tempura Eggplant was to die for! You need to order this! Second to that I loved the Spicy Tuna Aburi. I also had a Crunchy Avocado Roll and a Spicy Scallop Roll. Once we were seated, our waitress let us know that happy hour was ending shortly just in case we wanted to order something from the happy hour menu. It was nice that she let us know, and we ordered the tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, spicy scallop maki san. We also ordered the miso soup, shishito peppers, umami scallop aburi, charred cauliflower, as well as an old fashioned. The spicy salmon is super fresh, and with a nice brightness from the yuzu. The miso soup was rich and flavorful, and an excellent supplement to the cold weather outside. The spicy scallop was also fresh and very good. The umami scallop aburi had a nice crispy rice as the base, with fresh tasting scallops on top. The shishito peppers came with a nice dipping sauce and were really good. The cauliflower was pretty heavily charred but didn't taste burnt at all. It came with a nice dipping sauce as well to kind of cut through the smoky char a bit. The old fashioned was definitely unique, and it was a really good value, especially during happy hour. The food came out quickly, and our waitress made sure that we had water refilled promptly. Very good service overall, and a great meal. If you're looking for a good sushi spot within walking distance of a lot of hotels around magnificent mile, this is a really good option. read more

We ordered the spicy scallop appetizer and a lot of different sushi rolls. While the fish was fresh, I wasn't blown away by anything in particular. I'm from out of town and Sushi-San was recommended by someone at my hotel. I called a few hours before to make a reservation, but when I arrived there was no record of it. The hostess at the front was able to get us to a table even though they were packed. Our waitress was not very attentive. Yes, the restaurant was crowded but she went back and checked on several tables without circling back to us. After she took our order, we were well into our food before she came back. On the other hand the food was delicious. One thing I will say is that on the menu, the green beans do not say they contain pork. It would be great to add this for those that don't eat meat. I was so hungry, I just picked around it but halfway through wished I would have sent it back. The fried eggplant was delicious and had a hint of sweetness which I really enjoyed. I have ordered dozens of times and I will totally recommend the beef lettuce wraps, the Vegetable sushi box, the Crunchy Avocado Roll, the prime skirt steak and the chicken nugs. This was an interesting experience. Is it cold evening and my friend wants to get sushi for her birthday and was excited to ball out for the festivities. Before I start this review I have to say that I am deathly allergic of any seafood and shellfish but there were some meat alternatives so I was still excited to go on the adventure. If you ever been to a Korean restaurant and paid 13 for ribs you get at least 3. It was kinda insulting to be honest. The Wasabi was a nice touch though. I also paid for a side of rice. I was so hungry I ordered bbq beef with lettuce wraps which was better and my side of ride made it into a better meal. I washed everything down with the drink Gonna Be A Good Day which was fantastic. I got two. My friend who was enjoying her bday got the D-Luxe Nigiri* 12 Pcs which she thoroughly enjoyed except for two pieces that were not fresh. There was a weird thing happening with her tea.. for some reason they kept giving her Luke warm tea even after asking the waitress Specifically to make it hot. Which hindered her experience eating the Nigiri just a bit. For dessert we got the Japanese pancakes which I already said were delicious and was the hottest food item we got. My friend washed the pancake down with ICHINOKURA HIMEZEN "PRINCESS FOOD" UME SHU. Overall nice environment, OK service, decent food, but everything was a bit overpriced for the portions. If you're looking for a nice date to go on and spend a lot of money Impressing the one you're with this may be for you.
