    The chef was very friendly and very smart. At the beginning of the omakase he asked if anyone was celebrating anything so at the end my husband and I got birthday candles on our tamago! The chef does chat with everyone as well as explain each course. I like how he incorporates the local Gloucester and Japanese seafood together. The omakase menu for 11/16/23 is below: Steamed egg with eel Gloucester live scallop Cured Gloucester mackerel Gloucester monkfish liver Sea bream Lean marinated blue fin tuna from Gloucester Spanish mackerel Salmon roe Golden eye snapper from Japan torched Uni from Japan Otoro (tuna belly) Sea eel from Japan Tuna hand roll Tamago Mackerel was in season and so you'll see that incorporated into the menu. My top favorites were the live scallops, otoro and golden eye snapper. For a dinner for 2, it costed us $400. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience. The chef even recommended the ice cream shop down the street called holy cow for dessert and the must try flavor was rizzy af.

    Great ambience, service, and flavors! I have been to Sang Lee's twice now and each time was quite the experience. He focuses on locally caught fish from fishermen in Glouster. I highly recommend getting the fresh wasabi that he grates it himself. He proudly has it flown in weekly from Japan. I wish that I could try out his weekly lunch bento, but unfortunately I live too far away! I'll certainly be coming back here, it just gets sent to the 'Special Event' area due to its highly worth it cost.

    Small, hidden, omakase spot in Gloucester. Luckily, there's parking available. The woman working there alongside Chef Sang is vey welcoming. Chef Sang had prepared an amazing selection for us. My person favorite is mackerel, so I'm glad they were able to include that the night I was there. I also love chawanmushi (steamed egg), this one was very flavorful and at the bottom there was a bit of eel. The scallop severed was probably one of the best I've had, it was surprisingly creamy. My last highlight of the course goes to the tamago, probably the best I've had so far. As we left chef also gave us an ice cream recommendation closeby (which had really good ice cream!)

    A very professional yet intimate omakase experience. Chef Sang Lee definitely knew how to make his customers feel taken care of, and the rest of the staff were just as friendly. My only issue would be the price, I don't know if the $190 price tag justifies the amount we ate. Still, the food was delicious and carried special twists that make the experience especially unique.

    I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and it just happened to be after Chef Sang Lee won Chopped. Not only was it the best sushi experience we've ever had, it was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. We got to see first hand Chef's talent, care and passion for each dish he prepared. Not only was the food incredible Chef Sang Lee took time to talk with each of us throughout the 18 course meal. Thanks to Chef Sang Lee and Summer for making me look like a hero for surprising my girlfriend on her birthday. I don't think we'll ever eat sushi again because nothing will compare to the meal and the experience. Gloucester is so lucky to have Sushi Sang Lee!

    So I'm posting this here because Google reviews is being shady and not letting my review there show up, but this man deserves it --so here it is: The truest definition of a hidden gem. This was my favorite omakase experience thus far. The atmosphere is very intimate and cozy, complimented with a super clean Japanese aesthetic. Each course set me up to have my mind blown several times all the way up to the final dessert course. I have to give a separate shout out to the wasabi though, because it was the smoothest, most pleasant kind I've ever had --even my partner, who usually has a lower tolerance for it, was able to enjoy it. The single hand roll in the 18 course omakase convinced me to book the next immediate hand roll omakase, and it was extraordinary. The toro hand roll add on is a MUST. This place is a MUST. Also, Sang Lee is a true gentleman --ensuring females among the groups get served first. Respect. To top it off, this place is tucked away from the city traffic and metered parking. Bless. We appreciate you Sang Lee, and we'll be back!

    The experience you have is more of a guided tour for your taste buds and a welcomed visit with a friend. Sang is an amazing chef and the wealth of knowledge that he imparts to his guests that soon become friends is amazing. The intimate setting adds to the experience and lends to all his patrons to socialize and share on the experience. We have now made the hour plus trip from Boston several times and plan to make more, but we hesitate to tell others about it only to selfishly keep it as our hidden gem. With that said...Go, Eat, Drink and Experience what truly can only be described as a night to remember.

    The best sushi I have ever had, and I've had a LOT of great sushi, all over the world. Sang is an artist of rare ability, and also a kind local citizen who helps lift up the other chefs and restaurants around him (of all levels). His reverence for both local fish and the top-end products from Japan lead to a transcendent experience that is delicious, mind expanding, and even emotionally moving. You will have flavors you never tasted before. Sang's lunch boxes are like edible jewelry, and his omakase is a full evening of entertainment. His special events (such as "how to make your own sushi roll" are really fun and perfectly organized. Get the fancy wasabi (yes, it's worth it...) and the sake (perfectly selected).

    So to say the experience at Sushi Sang Lee is next level, almost seems like an understatement. And I must stress, it is the whole experience, not just the food (prep and quality!) When you slide into the dim lit parking lot out back, trying to fund the entrance, you get a whole " speak easy' vibe. You walk into the counter, with 8 seats for the whole restaurant, all in full view of the magic to come from Chef Sang. The 15 course meal was truly amazing, but brought to new levels by the explanation of ingredients, technique, sourcing, and more. Both by Chef Sang and also Sofia. Their knowledge was unparalleled. Anyone that enjoys Sushi knows it is about the fish, the freshness, the prep and how it is cut. Seeing Chef Sang in his element proves this. On top of it, seeing his unique methods (from his house made Soil Sauce, to his Eel sauce, seasoning, curing, use of Kelp, and more) show how truly special the meal you're eating is. If you are able to make it happen, it is worth it. 100% worth every penny. And I will encourage, TRY everything. if you do not think you like mackerel, or Uni, or Salmon Rowe - it is important to point out, every piece he prepared was better than like ones I have had in other restaurants, and none met pre conceived beliefs. Omakase means " I will leave it up to you", or basically, you're putting your trust in the chef. Please trust Chef Sang And Sofia in their direction. listen, absorb, and eat how they recommend. The meal flows, is delicious, and everything is done in an order for a reason. The Meal, the food, and the experience with Chef Sang is all well worth it, and I would 100% recommend to anyone who can. It will be THE sushi experience of your life!

Sadly, we left no room for dessert, and that was a shame as their desserts are fabulous and made in the restaurant. Since I was only moderately hungry and didn't want to overstuff myself, it was a middling deal. My dining companion ordered Chinese food, it was pretty decent for the kind of Americanized quasi-Chinese you'd expect in such a place, and the prices were very good which I found remarkable given the high tourist-trap quotient of the area. Only criticism is that the "green tea ice cream" didn't taste like it contained any green tea at all, just green coloring, which was perhaps why it was served with tons of whipped cream and chocolate syrup. But a huge portion at such a low price, we couldn't complain really. Service was excellent, we had a nice and attentive waiter. I'd certainly consider revisiting this place next time I'm in the area. PS. Extra bonus: due to being adjacent to Friendly's, you get a nice strong signal from the latter's free wi-fi!

When I was asking, they were explaining it would still be full price but, thankfully the sushi chef started laughing and said it was fine. I felt guilty asking the waiter for anything. He was an odd mix of watching us, but not very available and it took them a long time to come to the table at first. It's the same owners as Ocean Garden and we love the takeout there. This location is always dead. I'm not sure it'll survive there.

When we eventually sat at a table for dinner, we ordered drinks, oysters, and two pizzas. One pizza has cheese and the other pizza (the Rosso) is only sprinkled with Parmesan, and is commonly known in Italy as a pizza senza formaggio. After waiting over 40 minutes for our food after being sat late, only the cheese pizza arrived. We waited over 20 minutes and talked to our waiter and kitchen multiple times to see what was going on with the other pizza. Apparently the pizza chef kept burning the cheese free pizza, an item on their menu that he is apparently not able to make. Finally the pizza was made, and the manager delivered it to the table next to us. They asked why they were given a pizza without cheese, and we had to walk over to the table to grab it. Our waiter came over and asked if everything turned out, and we shared we were disappointed the manager gave the pizza to the wrong table. He told us he had nothing to do with that and was embarrassed. After we started eating, our waiter came back to tell us the pizza and the almonds were comped. We had never ordered the almonds, and shared that we were surprised we would have been charged for something we never ordered and shared my allergies. He said it was the best his manager allowed him to do. Not once did the manager come by to apologize for delivering the pizza to the wrong table or for messing up our order or for making our experience so poor. To be "comped" something we didn't order as an apology for our table wait was absurd. Terrible experience, mediocre food, incompetent manager. Would not recommend.

I had the fried fish sandwich with cheddar cheese on brioche bread. Comes with 2 sides: picked the garlic & buttered spinach and a baked potato. The sandwich did have a side of what tasted like their own house made tartar sauce. One of our guests split a cobb salad and another one ordered fish n chips that they all enjoyed.

You can eat out on their deck or there's a nice view of the harbor. There are two bars and I imagine it gets pretty packed in the summer. I send people here when asked where to go for standard fish and chips fare and feel vindicated now that I've returned in the off season. On the negative side- the vibe is corporate- like you're eating in a hotel lobby in the Midwest. There was one piece of art that looked local and if not for that, you could have been anywhere. Not a damning criticism but also the music made me feel like I was in Ohio not Gloucester. Someone had the station on contemporary country and it was loud. Men singing about going home with drunk women with low self esteem and trying to win back custody of their kids- it's the worst vibe for me. I kept looking at the waitresses trying to determine which one I could pay to change it. If the food wasn't so good and the staff wasn't so nice I would have left. There were so few other customers compared to the other restaurants we passed by I wondered if it was because the music was the reason. There's a way to say "we are a working class hangout " without blasting music that glorifies heavy drinking and dim wits in the background. The restaurant owners have curated every other aspect of the experience- they should go to Oak to Ember or the Franklin at night and realize that the music in addition to the atmosphere makes it or breaks it.

For $40, which is more than a lobster roll with 4 times the meat and 10 times the quality costs in Boston, it was a bit of a rip-off. On the positive side, the tater tots were great. They were crispy and served piping hot fresh. They probably came from a frozen bag, but they were made well. The fish chowder was not bad. Although the soup was not very rich and somewhat underseasoned, the fish seemed fresh and was flaky and tasty. Fries were not great (likely also from a bag, under seasoned, fast-food thin, and served lukewarm). The atmosphere may merit a visit for drinks, but food may be a gamble.

There were maybe 8-10 very large shrimp, and they were perfectly cooked. The fried haddock/chips was great, fish was crispy and delicious, but unfortunately the fries were not good and did not match the caliber of the food served. Limp, and probably were hanging around under a heat lamp :-( Overall, service was OK. Food arrived fairly staggered and one entree was very late. The runner confessed and said he dropped the plate and it had to be remade. It would have been nice if the server informed us. Despite the minor service hiccups (very young and likely inexperienced staff), the atmosphere and food are worth it. Give them a try!

    Things have gone downhill. We used to go regularly but they got a new chef a couple of years ago…read moreand the menu and food is not very good. The menu has been dumbed down. The service has also gone downhill. Last year we went for dinner once, had a reservation, and waited over 30 minutes while looking at 2 empty tables by the water. The hostess finally said that we could sit at one of them. Today at lunch we waited 10 minutes at the hostess station before anyone approached. We were seated and given water and menus, and waited 10 more minutes before our waitress took our order. We got items that we've previously gotten and liked. Not so much today. Our food came out 20 minutes later and we had no silverware, so some was scavenged from a nearby table. My fried chicken sandwich had been cooked for far too long and the coating was separated from the chicken and shattered as I bit into it. Not good. The fries have gone downhill as well. They were blasting reggae and it was just too much for a weekday lunch. We won't be back.
