They have the best chowder in the downtown area of Gloucester if you are walking around the harbor and shopping but don't want to get in your car again. The restaurant is pretty big and the wait staff are really nice and friendly. The menu is good sized, reasonably priced for the portions and delicious. You can eat out on their deck or there's a nice view of the harbor. There are two bars and I imagine it gets pretty packed in the summer. I send people here when asked where to go for standard fish and chips fare and feel vindicated now that I've returned in the off season. On the negative side- the vibe is corporate- like you're eating in a hotel lobby in the Midwest. There was one piece of art that looked local and if not for that, you could have been anywhere. Not a damning criticism but also the music made me feel like I was in Ohio not Gloucester. Someone had the station on contemporary country and it was loud. Men singing about going home with drunk women with low self esteem and trying to win back custody of their kids- it's the worst vibe for me. I kept looking at the waitresses trying to determine which one I could pay to change it. If the food wasn't so good and the staff wasn't so nice I would have left. There were so few other customers compared to the other restaurants we passed by I wondered if it was because the music was the reason. There's a way to say "we are a working class hangout " without blasting music that glorifies heavy drinking and dim wits in the background. The restaurant owners have curated every other aspect of the experience- they should go to Oak to Ember or the Franklin at night and realize that the music in addition to the atmosphere makes it or breaks it. read more

The seaside pub atmosphere made me optimistic and warm service made me optimistic, but as soon as the lobster rolls arrived I knew it would be underwhelming. The lobster was dry, gummy and the meat pieces were small and sparse. For $40, which is more than a lobster roll with 4 times the meat and 10 times the quality costs in Boston, it was a bit of a rip-off. On the positive side, the tater tots were great. They were crispy and served piping hot fresh. They probably came from a frozen bag, but they were made well. The fish chowder was not bad. Although the soup was not very rich and somewhat underseasoned, the fish seemed fresh and was flaky and tasty. Fries were not great (likely also from a bag, under seasoned, fast-food thin, and served lukewarm). The atmosphere may merit a visit for drinks, but food may be a gamble. read more

My hubby and shared two 1.25 lb lobsters with sides of fries and coleslaw for $60 - a bargain considering the size of those lobsters! We also had a cup of their fresh and hot new england chowder - a perfect meal when you are in Gloucester - the oldest sea port in the new england area. The town is celebrating their 400th year this year too. You're paying for the view at this restaurant, not the food. My mother ordered haddock, scallions, mashed potatoes and I ordered a grilled chicken Mexican salad. I tasted her scallions and mashed potatoes. She and I both thought the potatoes and scallions were bland/tasteless and she said the haddock was also rather tasteless. My mom said the batter was greasy and not crispy. My grilled chicken tasted as if it had been frozen and then thawed and cooked. Fun place for lunch or dinner. We had the boiled lobster and a fried haddock sandwich. Lobster was superb. Haddock sandwich was just ok. Might be better on a po boy style roll or a piece of folded Texas toast. Or a hoagie. Also it didn't come with tartar so I had to wait a bit for the server to come back to begin eating. This place is amazing! I came to Gloucester with one dish in mind and that was the Lobster Roll. It has always been a dream of mine and The Gloucester House fulfilled that. The lobster was savory, the butter well suited the meat, the bread was soft and warm. Everything was great!!! I also had a taste of the fried shrimp, needless to say that shrimp basket can suit two people instead of one. They give you more than enough shrimp to satisfy your needs! I also have to say that the cornbread they serve you is warm and buttery. Just be careful not to eat too much of it! Overall, the service here was great, the restaurant was nice and clean and they give you a nice view of the harbor. This place used to be the best for seafood when it was a full service restaurant. Now, they've changed to a bar style menu with very little seafood options. The clam chowder used to be amazing. Now on our latest visit, I found what I believe was a piece of bacon fat in the chowder. Honestly, I told my wife the chowder tasted like Bacon Soup. Definitely not New England Clam Chowder. Our halibut dish was soggy and greasy and simply not edible. We used to be regulars at the old Gloucester House. The clam chowder with corn bread and fried scallops were exquisite. Our group of four recently had lunch here while visiting Massachusetts. As a bonus, we were able to watch a fish boat unload while lunching. The locally-caught fish dishes were excellent. I had the haddock. The clam chowder and the fish chowder were both excellent. These dishes did not have a ton of ingredients, and the chef wasn't trying to be extra creative with them. The chef really allowed the fish to be the main attraction. While the table received a bread basket, I was given gluten-free rolls, which I really appreciated. The restaurant itself is very clean and comfortable. They have a fireplace for those cold chilly days. There is also dockside patio seating. We sat inside due to rainy weather. There is a more casual outdoor restaurant called the Blue Collar Lobster. It appears to be outdoor deck seating. Both are owned by The Gloucester House. I'm assuming it's open seasonally, but not certain. The servers were pleasant but a little slow. Our water glasses sat empty for a while before we could get their attention for a refill. So I can completely understand why this place can't go beyond 4 stars. Everything is just ok. When you have the tourist drive from the 7 Seas Whale Watch you have guaranteed traffic so that should make you want to make sure the space is clean and you have epic clam chowder for starters. The space is tidy but it's not super clean. The glasses have bits on them so this may be a case of needing a super string washing machine replaced. The food is really just average and nothing to write home about, and for $35 a lobster you should have super fresh and delicious sides, not canned coleslaw. The oysters were huge and a little weird to get used since I've never had that large of oysters. They are sold individually. My boyfriend got the New England clam chowder he liked it but, wasn't in love and I felt... it was more of a potato/bacon chowder with some larger tuna textured clam pieces in it... no celery not a creamy cream flavored not bad but I wouldn't get that next time. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. At first everyone seems unwelcoming but they do warm up to you. This place is white table cloth type of place, or at least it tries to be. I'm not sure if I like that type of atmosphere but I will say that the food here is quite delicious! Stopped in for a small bit to eat during our day trip to Cape Ann. We ordered the New England clam chowder which was perfect for a slightly cool breezy day. Again the exterior is not attractive, though the interior is nicely decorated. They do take reservations, but the reserved time slot is purely for reference only. No correspondence to reality. We waited for quite a while (well passed our reserved time slot) before our table became available. Food was fine (their calamari is so "pedestrian" that it's most restaurant-worthy). My wife and I had a totally good experience. She had a whole lobster and I had fish and chips. Waitress was helpful in showing my wife how to eat a lobster. Food was good quality and fresh. I gave this 3 stars because my prior experience influenced my lunch today. Last year I stopped by the Gloucester House and sat in the bar area. It wasn't too busy and I ordered fish & chips. Those were the best fish and chips ever! Back in town, I decided to drive up and get some more of the delicious fish and chips. The restaurant was busy being a weekend and we were seated in the back patio section - which was nice. Sunny, nice breeze from the water, good view of boats. I'm excited. I don't really look at the menu - just order the fish and chips! My friend ordered the honey & nut salmon and we split a bowl of the clam chowder. She ordered a diet coke and me a water. It took a bit of time, but the server came by with the drinks and soon after the soup & corn bread. The soup was good, the corn bread was excellent and things were looking up. Earlier in the day I ran a 5 mile run and was still a little thirsty. Mistake. The coke came in a regular sized cup, but the water was a small goblet, mostly of ice. It didn't last long, but the server was nowhere to be found. We waited and waited, still no sign of him. Eventually he returned to collect the soup bowl and he started to walk away - we had to ask for refills. I don't know where he went to get the refills because he was gone about 10 minutes before returning. Again, I started on the water, but realized I better pace myself. It might be a while before we saw him again - and it was. The next appearance was when he brought out the food. It looked great. 3 huge pieces of fish, and the salmon looked good as well. Last time the fish was crunchy and nicely fried - but this time, a little soggy. Maybe it was a soft fry? Somewhere between baked and fried. The fish was flaky and good. No vinegar - I had to ask for that, and since he was here, I had to ask for another water too. As it turns out the water was able to be refilled at a station close to our table - so why the long wait? Then the bill arrived. The fish and chips was showing as the $11.99 lunch portion, but the salmon, which my friend ordered from the lunch page was charged at the regular $21 price. She asked if she had not ordered the lunch dish. The server said oh yeah, took the ticket and was gone for a while. He returned with the price adjusted - which the difference between the regular and the lunch price is $10, so it is definitely noticeable. That made me wonder what he put in to the kitchen. Was it the lunch portion and he charge the wrong one, or did he order the regular portion? I don't really think he knew what he was doing. The food was good, but not nearly as good as it was before. The service was definitely weak. Too slow and a little unsure of what he was doing. Keeping the drinks full should be basic. After this experience, the Gloucester House wasn't as exciting as I remembered. read more

Needs improvement. The staff was lovely and accommodating. The views are nice. I just took issue with very meh food. If this was a bar and the prices where half of what they were they might pull it off. But when billed as fine dining and the food prices are up there it should be on point. Most of the food came out over cooked, under flavored, or over sauced. The bathrooms by the bar where smelly and disgusting and the dining area was uncomfortable. Went there with a group and tried everyone's plates. None of it impressed me. The only thing I will get if I go in there again will be a drink. Again, staff is nice. Sit at the bar.
