I stumble upon this place after having a craving for some sashimi and found this lucky gem. In the beginning I thought it was some industrial complex when driving through but once exiting the car and walking towards the lake did we notice the restaurant. The cleanliness and the Japanese planter courtyard entrance made you feel transfer back into a nice dojo of a restaurant. The waitresses wearing kimonos and the staff is chef outfit and the simplest Marie kondo simplistic setting made the place very warming. The staff were super attentive and we were able to strike a conversations in mandarin and Korean. Looks like the ownership was changed a long time ago but it looks like the quality of food and service has continue to maintain its spectacular delicacy. We ordered the chirashi and the 20 piece sashimi boat. I must say the quality is amazing and pretty decent. Very fresh indeed and we ended the evening with matcha ice cream. The staff was accommodating and welcoming. Will come back again.

Service was polite and friendly. Maybe a little slow but it looked like a slow day. It's right in the path that wraps around the lake so you can people watch from the windows. We were sat without a reservation right away. The only real drawback was the food. It's good but not great, especially for the price. Pickled vegetables (oshinko) was great, but $5 is still a lot for a little side. The teriyaki chicken lacked flavor and was pretty rubbery. The spicy tuna tartare had a great flavor, but still a small portion for $18. The rolls were definitely decent, but again rather pricey. Would come back if in the area and looking for a view, but wouldn't go out of my way.

Came here with my friend and got seated immediately for dinner. We ordered salmon and toro nigiri and spicy grill roll and Fourth of July roll. The nigiri was super good and they put a large piece on it which makes it more worth it and it tasted very fresh. We always order spicy grill roll which is so delicious as always. Then we tried a new roll Fourth of July as it comes with many different fishes which was highly intriguing. This roll was really savory and filling as well.

Enjoying a great sushi lunch with an awesome friend. The food and the service here is always spectacular

The first time I visited the place I was already impressed and I said that I would bring my mom here for Mother's Day celebration. The food tastes so good and the serving portion is just enough. The waitresses are polite and attentive. The ambience is nice and clean. This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Columbia. I highly recommend the steak it is so juicy and not dry.

This is one of the longest standing sushi restaurants in Columbia. They have always served some of the best sushi here. And when I say sushi, I am NOT talking about those fancy sushi rolls made for Americans, I am talking about the real Japanese style sushi, because this is the only way you can tell the true skills of the sushi chefs. And here, you can find some of the finest. From plating, freshness of the seafood to the size of the fish slices and taste of the sushi rice. Props to chef Jason , chef Yang, and the younger chefs who crafted the deliciousness behind the counter. So we have been coming to Sono for many years, no restaurants is perfect, I've had several undesirable dishes here as well. Like I said earlier, those all happened to be the none Japanese traditional dishes so I don't fault them on it. Price is on the high side if you are like me and going for uni, toro, salmon belly. You can definitely stick to budget friendly items as well to order the common items. Staff were super efficient given how busy and crowded this place can get. Mistakes happens and they do correct them on the spot. I call this good service. You will wait for a while if you come during peak hours without reservations. Convenient parkings options nearby . You can either park in the garage or by whole-foods. Highly recommend by this foodie IG@WineDinenVacay

Really good sushi and sashimi so fresh! Recommend the whole fish sashimi- after done they will cook the soup ( miso / ginger your choice) , and fire a part of it. Service is nice!

I came by with friends before a concert at Merriweather. We picked the restaurant randomly but I was surprised by the quality from the moment we walked in. The servers are extremely kind and welcoming, and the decor makes you feel like you're in a real sushi house. The sushi was amazing. High quality ingredients, well prepared, and good prices. Some of our group got non-sushi dishes too, and they came with salad and miso soup. The quality was high and again, it seemed like a great deal for the price. I wished I lived closer because this would become a go-to for me!

Quick service, busy but efficient & friendly. Sushi boat & edamame: edamame was simple & salty; sashimi pieces were generous with big cuts. Even though you can't choose your fish and its chef's choice, all of the pieces were very good. Quality of the fish was great as well. The menu isn't as extensive with a lot of variety of rolls but I'd come back!

Creative rolls, all tasty and no complaints. Great location near Lake Kit so you can walk off all that fish and rice. Parking is in the rear structure. Would go again, big menu including curry, rice, katsu, and soups.

I liked the ambiance of this place! It reminds me of a Japanese place we went to in Hawaii. As for the food I enjoyed what we got mainly the lobster roll. However, except for the dragon roll I was not a fan of that one. Would go here again since it's by the lake though! It's a good area to be in!

There is no gluten-free soy sauce options available unfortunately

Is the private room for an additional charge?

No additional charge - just call and reserve it. It isn't a very large room though so ask how many can be seated there comfortably

How many people can fit into the private room?

    At least 12

Is the spicy tuna roll made with spicy mayo or very small pieces of spicy pepper?

Not sure what spicy roll they're eating, but I just ordered it and there's no mayo in it lol.

Solid meal, friendly service, with a few nitpicks. details: We went on a pretty quiet Monday afternoon to grab a sushi (and more) dinner. There were hardly any people for context. There's a bar (by the sushi making station), tables, and booths to sit. Plenty of seating. The ambiance is kind of modern with familiar touches of an Asian/Japanese dining experience. There's TVs everywhere, which I assume would be playing sports/news (but there weren't any games happening at that time). That's where my nitpick actually is. I don't think they monitor this very closely and so there were a few explicit songs and videos playing at the time we were there. It wasn't anything hardcore or anything, but something to be cognizant about if you're going with little ones. The food was solid. Things did take a little longer than what I expected considering how quiet the place was when we were there. However, things did taste fresh and made to order, so I'm guessing/assuming the time went to make things fresh which is definitely nice. All the food we ordered was well balanced with flavor and cooked well. The sushi menu felt a bit more on the Americanized side for me. e.g. there's lots of rolls with cream cheese and mayo type of sauces. But, what we did order was very tasty. Positive experience all around and I would recommend checking out if you're in the area and in the mood for some Japanese cuisine.

The chef even made us a baked salmon dish on the house, which was delish! However, it seemed like the rice my sushi was made with was part of an older batch or undercooked? It was kind of hard. I have been to many sushi restaurants that are high end and more affordable, but Oya is the best of both worlds. The quality and creativity in each dish is far out of the league of what you pay. The restaurant is on the smaller end, but the lighting, decor, and cleanliness is absolutely stellar! What I love is that the interior compliments the fresh and clean taste of the fish. Attention to detail in how everything is presented and plated shows the amount of care that the chef has for their customers. Additionally, they do not hold back on the things that matter. I chose to eat various dishes of fish, which require a lot of ginger to cleanse my palette after each fish, and Oya did not hold back. Where many other sushi restaurants lack, Oya dominates at. Service was absolutely amazing as well. The chefs were extremely respectful greeting you and the server was ready for whatever need you may have. More than supporting big chains that profit off of you by overstuffing you with a lot of rice and cheap fishy fish, I would HIGHLY recommend supporting a small business. Oya Sushi is one of the handful of restaurants that I wish I could exceed five stars. Everything about this place exceeded all expectations and I could not recommend this place more than any other sushi restaurant I have been to. It is a different type of love when you want to go around to all your friends, family, and co-workers to one day take them to a restaurant. Oya is a MUST eat when in Maryland.
