    Chirashi deluxe
    Chris C.

Great hidden gem sushi restaurant central to the core. I was in a rush and ordered a take out chirashi deluxe. Fish was fresh. Service was fast. Rest was no frills and served Edomae style. This is a great day to day sushi spot.

This local sushi spot is the place for fresh sashimi and chirashi dons at an affordable price! Tokyo sushi offers bento boxes, rolls, sushi and many different combos of "don" or rice bowls with quality ingredients! I don't think they have social media but go support them, the owners are so sweet! Inside the decor is minimal, it's a clean space! You can watch them make sushi at the counter. We ordered Chirashi Don and Kakimaze Don which both come with Miso Soup!

Lunch sushi set with spicy tuna, salmon and California roll

The history of this little gem dates back to the late 90s when the Sutton place hotel was next door to this restaurant. Many Hollywood A list movie stars gave signatures which are hung on the wall at the entrance way. They recently renovated and the seating is more comfortable with a partitioned back room. I stopped by for a quick lunch sushi set and there was so much food for $19 including miso soup that I had to pack it away. Their chirashi don is also amazing and highly recommended!

Stopped by for dinner and got the Bento Box A. Comes with tempura, 6 pieces of california roll, 3 pcs of sushi and typical salad and miso soup for $16. Pretty decent overall. I think with these bentos it's a good value play as you get a variety of everything. Really no complaints food wise, just really solid. They have a decent amount of seating and good service.

    Dynamite Roll

We ordered in from Tokyo sushi and were impressed with the presentation. Even in the to-go container, the presentation was well done and it's normally even better when dining in. We ordered the spicy salmon roll and dynamite roll. The dynamite roll was tasty but the spicy salmon roll wasn't special. Not very spicy and could have some more flavour. The service was excellent and very kind. Would go again!

Picked up some sushi for dinner at this place! Staff was very nice and sushi was really good. It's been a while since I've had good fish so I really enjoyed it. It is a bit pricier than other sushi places but you get what you pay for. I got one of their a special rolls, their Philadelphia roll - salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, avacado, and masago ($13). Like I said, I really enjoyed it! you could tell their fish is good quality and it really stands out. I wouldn't mind coming back another time.

One of my favorite donburi restaurants in the city and ive certainly had a lot of donburis. There are certainly cheaper places with worse quality and pricier for better but I think this is the perfect balance for optimal value.

Cute little whole in the wall near UofT. Doesn't look like much from outside but this place was really cute. We got our own little private booth in the back. Sushi was good and fresh. Service was super quick and the servers were all so sweet. Will definitely be going back.

    Chef selection nigiri

There are not many truly Japanese run sushi restaurants in Toronto now. Had a chance to revisit this small Japanese restaurant tucked away on St. Joseph street and decided to try the takeout. There is a small patio available. Menu has a lot of options. Friendly service. Tried the chefs special nigiri and jumbo dragon roll. The roll was interesting a futomaki wrapped with eel. Chefs special was a mix of nigiri and seared nigiri. A bit disappointed with the chef selection it was all regular fish: salmon ( regular and seared), tuna ( red and albacore) mackerel, amberjack, eel. Sushi was fresh and big portions. A lot of rice. Will try the other rolls next time. Overall nice Japanese restaurant in the area for core menu items.

    Kamikaze don!

Hands down my favourite place to get chirashi don and kamikaze don. Cant express my love for Tokyo Sushi enough! During the school year, I would come here with friends after class. In the summer, id come here with coworkers. Their lunch special comes with miso soup and salad, and the included items are a few bucks cheaper. I always almost get the chirashi don. Its an assortment of sashimi cuts with avocado slices and seasoned rice. Smushing the avocado into the rice and topping each spoonful with a drop of soysauce, followed by a slice of sashimi is heavenly. Sometimes when i decide to #treatyoself, i would get the kamikaze don, which has an assortment of diced sashimi, red caviar, fresh uni (sea urchin) with seasoned rice, and a sunny side fried egg in the middle. I love biting open the caviar to taste the salt and ocean flavour. This dish tastes better when everything is mixed together, however I always save the sea urchin as a separate delicacy to savor. *this dish makes me put down my phone* The manager is a tall and friendly looking older man, and he always smiles and greet you at the door. He remembers my shrimp allergy and replaces shrimp from my orders each time. In my recent visit, i had switched work locations, and he was actually able to recall that i hadnt visited for a long time. Feels like my go-to place for dons as long as i stay in toronto.

    XL platter ($90)
    Amy L.

The food here is really good but the service has been quite slow every single time I've visited. I understand that they get busy but that doesn't excuse bad service (taking forever to place an order, never topping up water and tea, etc). In addition to the slow service, the menu items are a little pricey. The last time I went with 3 friends, we ordered the extra large platter (which they advertised as for 4-5 people) and we left feeling hungry after spending $30 pp. I don't think the value is amazing here but the fish is quite fresh and tasty. If you're not a big eater or don't mind spending the extra cash then this is not a bad option around the area.

Haven't came here for awhile and so happy they survived covid. Always the best service here and the sushi is as fresh and good as I remember. Too full to get a chirashi don which is my go to, we got a bunch of smaller plates. The soft shell crab is so yum! And we splurged on 45$ toro sushi's which were soooo worth it. Highly recommend the tataki here as well. Very unique dipping style rather than it laid out soaked in the sauce.

We walked into a lively, casual space that works especially well for groups, celebrations, or any meal where you want to take your time and enjoy the experience. The energy in the room is high, with the sound of grilling and conversation filling the space, and the table setup encourages a longer, more relaxed pace than a typical restaurant meal. The biggest highlight is the meat selection. The quality is consistently strong, with different cuts and marinades that give each plate its own flavor. The miso steak is one of the standout items, with a really good balance of savory, slightly sweet, and rich flavors. The marinated meats are where Gyubee really shines, coming seasoned well and developing a great char from grilling at the table. We worked through a range of options including kalbi, hanger steak, and sausage, mixing and matching as we went. The fun part is being able to control the cooking yourself, whether you prefer a lighter sear or a deeper grilled flavor, and the grill setup makes it easy to cook at your own pace. The sides and extras are also better than what we usually expect from an all you can eat BBQ spot. The sushi was surprisingly enjoyable, with smaller portions that made it easy to try different rolls without filling up too quickly. The bibimbap is another good addition, especially when paired with the grilled meats. Takoyaki and other sides helped break up the meal and added variety beyond just ordering meat after meat. The spread is broad enough that you can build a well rounded meal without feeling like you are stuck in a single category. Service was a strong part of the experience. Even with the restaurant being busy, the staff were attentive and checked in regularly to make sure we had what we needed. They kept the table moving, helped with ordering, and made the process feel smooth despite the constant flow of guests. The wait can be the biggest challenge, especially during dinner hours, but the service once seated helped make up for it. The staff also handled the high turnover of tables well, keeping the pace steady without making us feel rushed. Gyubee is one of those places where the experience is just as important as the food. The combination of grilling at the table, quality meats, good sides, and a fun group atmosphere makes it a great choice for a longer meal with friends or family. It is worth planning ahead for the wait because the meal itself delivers the kind of relaxed, interactive dining experience that makes you want to come back. The format encourages you to slow down, cook at your own pace, and enjoy the meal as a shared activity rather than just a quick dinner.

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

The fishes were plated very pretty and because it's sushi of course it tasted good. But I was surprised at the level of wasabi that was plated. Cleared up my sinuses for 30 seconds. The establishment is very clean and bright and a great place to head to if you're in a rush.

The aburi-style salmon sushi was one of the highlights for me.. lightly seared, with a soft texture and just enough flavor on top without being overwhelming. The tuna tataki was also fresh and clean, simple but well done. Some of the fried dishes leaned a bit richer with the creamy sauces, but they were still enjoyable, especially if you're in the mood for something a little more indulgent.
