What a gem! We came here after an event and were amazed at this small sushi place hidden away. We were seated immediately and the waitresses were super humble and nice. Amazing service and good sushi! The inside of this restaurant is very cozy and a great local spot for some casual sushi. Their menu has a wide selection of nigiri, sashimi, rolls, and entrees. The service is pretty fast and the owner is the sweetest. I would come back solely for the amazing service. The history of this little gem dates back to the late 90s when the Sutton place hotel was next door to this restaurant. Many Hollywood A list movie stars gave signatures which are hung on the wall at the entrance way. They recently renovated and the seating is more comfortable with a partitioned back room. It is a bit pricier than other sushi places but you get what you pay for. I got one of their a special rolls, their Philadelphia roll - salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, avacado, and masago ($13). My partner and I got sushi takeout from Tokyo Sushi. The food tasted good! Some niggles: -When I tried to order the california and dynamite roll set that I saw from their website's menu, I was told something like they don't offer sets anymore. So I ordered the california and dynamite rolls separately, which ended up costing $1 more. It's not a huge deal, but it would have been better if they update their online menu, or honor the pricing that I saw from their online menu. -For the 8-piece jumbo dragon roll that I got, two of the pieces were topped with salmon instead of eel. Seems like a cost saving measure. I didn't mind too much eating the two pieces with salmon, but it feels like I didn't get exactly what I ordered. EDIT: my partner saw a review in 2021(?) with a picture of the jumbo dragon roll that showed a bit of salmon on it, so it seems they put salmon on it for years but don't say so on the menu. -The soy sauce packets are made in China. We'd prefer better quality soy sauce not made in China. -Was it wasabi or horseradish that we got? Not sure. -I eat a lot, and for total of $43, it was not a lot of food, not great value for money, especially with some of the niggles mentioned. If we get takeout from e.g. Congee Queen, there'd be more food, and probably leftover, for the same price. I guess we'd eat sushi for the format/taste, but it definitely does not fill me up (unless I pay a lot more). From what I remember, years ago, a dragon roll that I ate from Spring Rolls was huge, if I remember correctly. Feels like shrinkflation. Overall, the food was good, but given the niggles, it's not something we'd eat often. read more

There are not many truly Japanese run sushi restaurants in Toronto now. Had a chance to revisit this small Japanese restaurant tucked away on St. Joseph street and decided to try the takeout. There is a small patio available. Menu has a lot of options. Friendly service. Tried the chefs special nigiri and jumbo dragon roll. The roll was interesting a futomaki wrapped with eel. Chefs special was a mix of nigiri and seared nigiri. A bit disappointed with the chef selection it was all regular fish: salmon ( regular and seared), tuna ( red and albacore) mackerel, amberjack, eel. Sushi was fresh and big portions. A lot of rice. Will try the other rolls next time. Overall nice Japanese restaurant in the area for core menu items. read more

Hands down my favourite place to get chirashi don and kamikaze don. Cant express my love for Tokyo Sushi enough! During the school year, I would come here with friends after class. In the summer, id come here with coworkers. Their lunch special comes with miso soup and salad, and the included items are a few bucks cheaper. I always almost get the chirashi don. Its an assortment of sashimi cuts with avocado slices and seasoned rice. Smushing the avocado into the rice and topping each spoonful with a drop of soysauce, followed by a slice of sashimi is heavenly. Sometimes when i decide to #treatyoself, i would get the kamikaze don, which has an assortment of diced sashimi, red caviar, fresh uni (sea urchin) with seasoned rice, and a sunny side fried egg in the middle. I love biting open the caviar to taste the salt and ocean flavour. This dish tastes better when everything is mixed together, however I always save the sea urchin as a separate delicacy to savor. *this dish makes me put down my phone* The manager is a tall and friendly looking older man, and he always smiles and greet you at the door. He remembers my shrimp allergy and replaces shrimp from my orders each time. Tucked away on the side of a condo building, this little nook of a sushi restaurant blew me away! Don't let the dull exterior or small interior fool you. The restaurant is welcoming and cozy. The servers are attentive and friendly. The food is great and the fish is fresh. I always get the salmon avocado rolls and they never disappoint! The sashimi is also quite good, especially for the price point. I've heard great things about their chirashi don however have never gotten the chance to order it yet (definitely on my to-try list though!). By far my favourite part of the restaurant is the owner (at least I think he is)! A little pricey, I had the lunch special Japanese Curry Udon $10.95. To add chicken, beef or shrimp was an extra $2 meaning the udon didn't come with a protein. I added chicken to mines and I only had a few pieces, those of which were dry (chicken breast). The lunch special included miso soup and a salad but they only gave me a salad. Overall, the ambiance was nice. But I could have gotten something better elsewhere. My boyfriend got a chicken teriyaki bento box $15.95. The chicken was dry, it was also chicken breast. Came with a few small slices, but he couldn't finish it because it was quite dry. We shared a spicy salmon maki which was good. Amazing amazing amazing customer service and food! My fiancée and I have lived in the area for 2 years and have frequently gone to Tokyo Sushi. The staff are so friendly and helpful, particularly Jenny, who always greets us with a smile and chats with us since we are regulars. Not only are the staff so incredibly sweet, the food is delicious! I find that Toronto sushi is usually hit or miss, but Tokyo Sushi is by far my favourite in Toronto! They serve delicious warm tea to you upon sitting down, then you can see the chefs at the counter preparing your meal skillfully and quickly. Truly a hidden gem just at the corner of Bay and St. Joseph. In the downtown area it is sometimes hard to feel that you know your neighbours, especially if you live in a condo. But the wonderful staff at Tokyo Sushi made us feel very sad to move away from the area. But we will definitely be back for the amazing food and to greet our friends! Tokyo Sushi is small and a bit tucked away. I've been here twice in the last month because the sashimi was good. Maybe the best in Toronto? The best I have had this year. It's not the cheapest but you get what you pay for here. I do enjoy less rice in my sushi and maki rolls and this place delivers. The sushi rice is really packed with flavour. Some sushi places cheap out on that and it just ends up tasting like regular rice. Service is pretty good, I had to ask for more ginger/wasabi a couple times to remind the server. Water and tea was only refilled when asked. The table next to me kept raving about the don bowls, which is something I plan on trying next! read more

So when we're hungry, we usually stop here. In comparison to other places, they have a number of vegetarian options on their menu that allows us to go here with people who want that. +.5 for service So close to five stars! Lemme explain. I was volunteering nearby two nights ago, and brought up Yelp search to see any nearby affordable minimum 4-star restaurants. This came up, and the photos shown looked very scrumptious so I decided to give it a shot. Arrived at around 9:30pm, and the place was about half full. Not bad for late night. I was promptly seated and treated immediately by a waitress who gave me green tea (which by the way tasted very good, as it has that pinch of rice and sweetness flavour). I ordered the Tokyo Sushi Set, and I found the meal to be beautifully crafted with extremely fresh fish that's between thin and thick. It was simply delicious, and definitely I rate it among one of the best sushi restaurants in the downtown core. Now why did it lose one star? The set doesn't come with miso soup or salad! For $15.99 I sorta expected at least a soup or salad to start up, as is typical with all the other Japanese restaurants. However this one came with nothing. Just the sushi. I looked at the menu after and I didn't see any mentions of soup or salad to come with the sushi sets (didn't take a look at the lunch specials or the other combos). Lack of starter aside, I highly recommend this place for high quality sushi at affordable prices. I have a few other places I want to try before giving a final consensus to where I'll be having my Tuesday dinners from now on, as I'll be volunteering down by Wellesley for the next 6-7 months. read more

At its price level and located in this part of the city (the Bay Street corridor), Tokyo Sushi does its job. And it does the job quite well, too. Service was fast and friendly; the ambiance was cozy and slightly upgraded from the typical downtown joint (without being pretentious). Bento boxes starting at $15 were decently priced; at this price point, though, I would appreciate appreciate slightly bigger portions. Maybe I was just hungry. The green tea was also on the tepid side, but it's complimentary so no complaints. The best part is the rice that comes with the sushi/sashimi; it's slightly vinegary and just full of flavour. The fish was very fresh. Tempura was breaded properly with a slightly sweeter aftertaste, but I'd prefer that to the overly-bland tastes you'd find somewhere else. Miso soup was complete yums! Came here with a few of my friends the other night and I have to admit that this place is pretty adorable. The decor is nice and clean. Love the autographed photos of celebrities that have been there hung proudly on their walls. Their menu is pretty vast from sashimi/sushi combos, bento boxes, to sharable appetizers. Everything was made fresh to order. The quality of everything was beyond my expectations for this place. We had ordered 4 different bento boxes and some appetizers and sushi to share. The only thing that I wish I could change about this place would be the speed of the service. Don't get me wrong, they are very friendly and have the ability to make you feel very welcomed. However, the service was pretty slow. Sometimes it felt like we had to flag someone down just to get tea refills but it was pretty busy and they only had two servers at the time we were there. So, with all that being said, if you fancy yourself a good time with friends that can carry a conversation accompanied with some great Japanese food than come on down to this place. Toronto has a lot of sushi bars, some of which can be a HIT or MISS. TOKYO Sushi House (TSH) made the cut thankfully. Away from the busy Yonge Street, at Bay st and St Joseph across from St Mikes college at UofT, TSH is small, cute, quiet, clean and well priced! The service is friendly and efficient. Keep in mind they have an extensive menu from combos, to bento boxes, and shareables available. Our group of four ended up ordering Bento boxes ($12-17) and some sides; spicy salmin sushi, tuna, gyoza, and edamame (avg $3.50-8/ 6pcs) The sushi and ingredients were fresh, affordable and presentation was perfect. I'm glad this was the place of choice..... :-) Just be sure to make reservations as this venue is small, and street parking is available closeby. read more

To be fair, I have only tried the Friday Roll (eel, avocado, cucumber) ($5.50), the shiitake mushroom roll ($3.50), the hamachi hand roll ($4.00) and Spicy Chirashi Don (approx. $16). However, I echo fellow reviewers, the food is expensive for the quality. The eel tasted as if it had sat in the fridge for a little longer than it should. The Spicy Chirashi Don is recommended if you have to choose from the menu. It has good flavours (wasabi and spicy mayo) with very little evidence of sashimi mixed with imitation crab.The portions, overall were smaller than most places. I would not recommend Tokyo Sushi House unless you are out of options in the neighborhood. read more
