Sushi Zento, how I wish you were in South Florida. I'll be honest and admit that I am a full blown sushi snob. Like it's obnoxious. I hate trying new establishments especially on vacation because of the abnormal fear of hating it. But I came to St. Augustine last weekend and my friends were craving sushi. I figured we should check out a place in downtown given that the more reviews, the better the place. They urged to go local and up came Sushi Zento. I was super skeptical. I said 5 stars? Impossible. I understand the 5 stars now and agree with it. We walked in and first off, you will not expect this place to look how it does. Given that it's in a quiet plaza where there isn't much going on. The décor is beautiful, the floors are shiny and clean, like I would be able to eat my sushi off of the floor and be okay with it. We sat down and our waitress, Annie, albeit wasn't super friendly but she was attentive and brought us over soup and the fried crabmeat appetizer on the house. Super nice, and not to mention the soup was good. We started out with the fried gyoza and it wasn't too hot and the flavors popped. There was so much sushi to choose from as the menu is extensive, so I decided to go with the spicy scallop roll. Sushi restaurants in South Florida do not have this - so I was curious to try it. I honestly anticipated it to not be good. And I'm glad I was surprised. The spicy scallop roll was amazing. It was a perfect amount of heat with the scallop and it comes with masago in the roll. I loved it! My friends got the real California roll and the spicy salmon roll and they loved their rolls, too. You can tell that the ingredients are fresh and made to order. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Not to mention with the rolls, the appetizer and a bottle of sake our bill was only $27.00. The price is right! Only negative thing I can say about this place is that they are not in South Florida! If you are strolling through St. Augustine, definitely check them out! read more

I'm vacationing here in St Augustine and as my last night here, I selected this restaurant as I was craving sushi. Sushi is my comfort food and as I'm ready to head home, I wanted some good sushi. I read the reviews and wanted to check out this place for myself. I was seated immediately and provided with water and I ordered a glass of wine before I had a chance to put my sunglasses away. Ok, very fast wait staff. I ordered the California Roll and the Alaska Roll - pretty basic sushi. Sadly, both rolls had sushi rice that was a little soggy with water which took away the flavor of each roll. Other people in the restaurant appeared to be regular customers so maybe the soggy sushi was not their usual fare. If I lived here, I might try this restaurant one more time but I was disappointed. read more

We ordered the spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, Phoenix roll, and rock roll. Phoenix roll and rock roll were okay starter rolls for my little sushi novice. Rainbow roll was good, but the whitefish section tasted AWFUL and super fishy. We tossed it. Spicy tuna roll was mostly tempura crunch or whatever garbage filler they stuck in there with the strange (supposedly) tuna (though no discernible fish were involved) mush they call "spicy." Disappointing at best. Maybe I'm spoiled by my South Florida sushi regular, but that's a no for me, dog. read more

The island finally has a real sushi bar! A real stand alone sushi bar! Not just another hibachi place! Their lunch specials are fantastically priced. A salmon bento box for $8 came with 2 gyoza, a salad, soup, fried rice, 4 California roll pieces and of course salmon. The "any" 2 or 3 roll combos that is in a special section (spicy tuna, shrimp tempura -- rolls like that) excludes specialty rolls, but still a total steal for $8 and $11, respectively. Their specialty rolls are also fantastically priced at like $8-14. This place is legit. Great sushi! And I hope they will offer delivery! read more

I was excited to see Toro as an option and it did not disappoint. Attention to detail at Sushi Zento is on point. A couple of examples are the salad had very fresh healthy looking lettuce and tomatoes, and the Jalapeños on the yellowtail appetizer were perfectly diced and flavorful. Chelsea from Colorado, (our home for 25 years) was our server. What a delight she was. The place was pretty busy considering it was a Tuesday night. We were seated right away in the last booth available and presented with complimentary soup and small appetizer. The menu is large, all tasty and fresh mind you. It's a bit daunting but if your a sushi lover, you will be in heaven! I ordered a spicy fire cracker roll, seaweed salad and spring rolls. My hubby ordered too many things to list and was extremely happy with everything. We will be back often as it's quite delicious and close to home.
