I actually have been here many many times and always get the same thing, Sushigawa Roll, it's my all time favorite at Sushigawa! But the last time we were here it was super spicy! Maybe just a fluke but the 3 rolls we got that night were pretty spicy and shouldn't have been, which is a bummer. Also they have strange hours, they close for a block of time in the afternoon which is super annoying. But for the most part the place is great and will obviously return!! read more

Hands down the best sushi I have ever had. I never ate sushi until I met my now-fiance', and since then we have tried numerous places in neighboring cities and states. We have yet to find something better, and we are even going on Monday to clear our palates from the mediocre sushi at Happy Fish in Campustown. We live in West Peoria, but are willing to drive a bit further to Sushigawa, as it is far superior to anything else in Peoria and beyond. We have been Sushi Gawa fans since it first opened. It is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere, and I LOVE me some sushi! I think the divide in Sushi Gawa/ Happy Fish fans comes to this: if you like your sushi with lots of mayonnaise and 5 or 6 ingredients to the roll, you'll love Happy Fish. If you prefer the cleaner, more authentic taste of simpler sushi combinations, you'll be a Sushi Gawa fan. I definitely fall into the latter category, and Sushi Gawa does it right. read more

Very happy to have Sushi Gawa back after the remodel. The new space is roomy, modern and its great to see the friendly staff again. It is by far the best place for sushi in Peoria So why not 5 stars? Sorry chefs, I just can't do it. When I ask the waitress to recommend something new, I expect something new. Not a california roll with something different on top (I'm talking to you, Green Fields). And here's the thing that really gets me: the consistency of the sushi is amazing. I firmly believe the chefs have all the skills and talent necessary - so mix it up, Gawa. We found Sushi Gawa years ago in college. You wouldn't think that you could find a good sushi restaurant so far away from a major city, but it's become one of those places we have to visit when coming to Peoria. I'm pretty particular with my spicy salmon, and I'd have to say this place does it best! It's not chopped up to an unidentifiable mush, but rather it's large chunks of salmon tossed in spicy mayo. Nice and simple, but absolutely delish! My absolute favorite is their tuna appetizer. It's a large mountain of spicy tuna with spicy crunchies and some benito flakes on top. I am by far a sushi expert, but I found their sushi to be fresh, their staff friendly, and the atmosphere pleasing. Our favorite restaurant in Peoria. We go there regularly. Great sushi that matches any restaurant in Chicago. We always order their miso soup and the salad with their special dressing. Only restaurant with uni (sea urchin eggs) sushi from time to time available in Central IL. Love their Crazy roll, in fact, all of their rolls are great. After the remodeling, this place is pretty nice. The rolls are good. For those that want a lot of food for the money, this place is good. They don't skimp on the fish but it's not that fresh (which isn't really that bad considering Peoria is landlocked). The Crazy Roll is a giant roll (can't be eaten in one bite) and contains a bunch of random fish, and is ok in my opinion. Service is actually pretty good. As far as I'm concerned, this place is the best sushi there is in Peoria, which isn't really saying much considering the caliber of restaurants in this town. read more

This is still my favorite sushi place to date. I did work here for a couple years, so I can tell you that this place is very clean and everything is done properly. The owners here are amazing and super kind. They love to get to know their regulars! I have had pretty much every single roll on their menu and they are all really great. The sushigawa roll is one of the most popular, and is very good. They also have a great appetizer selection. The atmosphere of Sushigawa is nice and relaxed, and their design since the remodel is beautiful. I would definitely recommend checking this place out. This is as authentic as Peoria has. Great fresh fish, and a good selection of other Japanese dishes. This is a little more expensive than some of the other sushi offering but it's a great meal. They have a green tea mixed with macha that is worth going for alone. read more

Consistent good Sushi and excellent decor. Of all the places in Peoria this is one of the best regardless of cuisine. If you go during the dinner hour don't be surprised if you have to wait. I've tried many sushi places around Peoria Bloomington area and imbetween. I can say Sushigawa is my favorite. I will warn you yes it is on the pricey side if you don't watch it. I've tried many different kinds of rolls from here favorite is the futo and shrimp tempura rolls. But everything I've tried has been very good and fresh. The service is good and somewhat fast if they aren't busy. The owner guy is a little strange and kind of hangs out in the back watching everyone. It seems only fair to update and increase my rating, given that Sushigawa is hands down our go-to Japanese joint in Peoria. The restaurant is nicely decorated and comfortable. The service is almost always friendly, and even though we're not super regulars, it seems like a few of the employees do remember us. The sushi is super reliable, always tasty, fresh, and well-made, and the kitchen items we've ordered are always delicious as well. Sushigawa is absolutely my first recommendation when anyone asks me where to get sushi in Peoria, and I don't see that changing any time soon. read more

I had my very first sushi experience (ever) at Sushigawa and it was most pleasant :) I always thought sushi was gross because all i had ever experienced before this was grocery store sushi (which is just disgusting.) Sushigawa changed my mind, and gave me a new love for sushi. However, I would have to say that Sushigawa is the #2 Sushi bar in Peoria since Happy Fish Sushi opened in Campustown. Happy Fish is more reasonably priced, their fish is AMAZINGLY fresh!!, The freshest fish in town! and their staff is GREAT!! I am a Sushi purist and that is what you get here.... traditional, clean tasting, great service and wonderful ambiance. There is no other option for sushi in peoria for me. I just don't even bother. I have tried Happy fish and sushi popo only to be VERY disappointed. If you don't know what real sushi is then maybe you like americanized sushi, BIG, UGLY, LOTS OF TOPPINGS, and overwhelming flavors. But if you like subtle, crisp, FRESH, flavors that meld together with a certain elegance then Sushi Gawa is for you! Your eyes eat before your stomach, absolutely gorgeous presentations and tastes.
