DJ Spencer was truly terrible at the wedding I attended a few weeks ago. He berated the maid of honor to the point of making her cry and forced myself and another guest, both groomsmen, to move his equipment during the reception. He was condescending to not only the coordinators but also the bride and the groom, completely ignoring their submitted playlist in favor of music he himself deemed appropriate. Not only that, but he also played songs in their entirety, which created an awful atmosphere at an otherwise gorgeous wedding. This got bad enough that the dance floor completely emptied out several times and the bride complained of not having the music she explicitly chose to dance to. I will not be recommending this service to anyone in the future and I hope the business chooses to remedy itself of this problem. read more

We had Spencer from Sutherland do our wedding. We gave him 3 names to interact with besides the bride and groom(myself), however he felt it necessary to ignore those names in favor of asking me all questions he had during the day. When he finally began interacting with our Day of Coordinator in favor of me, he quickly began yelling at her, I later found her hidden away crying due to how rude he had been, since she didn't want to concern us with this issue. After making her cry he decided it wise to continue pulling me away from my wedding throughout the reception, moving where our dance floor is, attempting to remove tables that currently had guests, pulling guests to move his equipment for him because it is "not his job" to move his own equipment and overall making me be his mouthpiece to other vendors as again it is "not his job". When it came time to dancing the music was fine, he did not play any song from our requested playlist until the matron of honor asked him to several times, and this resulted in multiple moments with no one on the dance floor (and a mass exodus at around 9:30pm because of music). Overall i would not recommend Sutherland for the price. read more

He pulled other friends and guests away from celebrating to help him move his equipment and kept loudly testing his audio in the middle of dinner. He tried his best to ruin the night. I attended a wedding on June 1st and it was beautiful, but the DJ was horrible. He yelled at the maid of honor and made her cry (and never apologized), he was rude to the groom, who he was told to leave alone (because it's his wedding!!) and he didn't play any songs that the Bride and Groom requested. He was on the preferred list of vendors for this venue and we can see why. Spencer is detail oriented, professional and a great MC/ DJ. Working with Cody from Sutherland was amazing! Our guests continued to rave about him weeks after our wedding. We were particularly impressed with Cody's ability to find and mix in specific Chinese songs we requested. We were also really impressed by the quality of our experience with our extra request; to have a private dance outside on the patio after the reception. We expected the music to be playing from the speakers inside the Brazilian room, but he had set up the speakers outside, which made our experience so much more private and enjoyable. Very professional and responsive. We hired Spencer to MC and DJ our wedding and were very happy with his services. Given that our venue did not have the best acoustics, Spencer did a great job making sure that we had the right sound set up. He was prepared for every minute of the reception and was careful to make sure that he got everybody's name in the program correct. Spencer is awesome!!!! We chose Spencer based on a recommendation from another vendor that told us that if we wanted a Dance Party...to hire Spencer. Wow...was that the truth!!! Spencer was completely professional, responsive and helpful during the planning process. He was accommodating and patient with any budget constraints and gave me a lot of great advice. As for the day of...he played the guitar for the ceremony beautifully and then was nimble enough to switch over and make sure to play the songs we needed from his sound system for our recessional. He came and scouted our location the day before (because we hired him to play down in L.A.) and was totally fired up and prepared to make sure everything went smoothly. He did a fantastic job of MC'ing the wedding...not talking too much but just making sure the guests knew what was going on. He helped us pull off a fun choreographed first dance on an entirely different dance floor and even helped my husband surprise me with a serenade by having a sound system/mic ready for that... and he kept the secret!!! :D He kept our dance floor absolutely PACKED all night!!! We even had to change our format a bit and skip some other things because people would NOT leave the dancefloor!! That is a high class problem!!! We thought that was going to be difficult because our dance floor was on a slant and we thought guests would not dance...forget about it! Spencer had them dancing so much that we actually pooled money together and paid him to stay an extra 3 hours (and he even threw in an extra half hour for us because he is so cool!) Spencer Sutherland was a great choice for our wedding. During the ceremony he played Spanish classics on acoustic guitar which was beautiful and romantic. It really set the mood. He was also our DJ for the reception and kept the party going all night! The venue manager let him play one more song after closing time because people were having so much fun. We had DJ Cody play our wedding a couple of months. He was great and kept everyone dancing. Very professional, played all of the songs we requested, and even worked with our Best Man and Maid of Honor to ensure the A/V equipment cooperated for their surprise videos during the reception. They also provided the mics for the ceremony and everything went off without a hitch. Just one star off because some of the initial back and forth with Sutherland Entertainment was a little confusing. A lot of the email responses we received seemed like form-emails that were copied and pasted and sent off to us. They might have addressed our initial questions somewhere amidst all of the dollar amounts and itemized lists, but sometimes I just wanted a simple answer to "Why is this package more expensive than just buying xyz a la carte?" Also, because of the form-letter/template aspect of these emails I didn't always trust that we were getting the best deal. The emails seemed to be built around up-selling us and I just wanted an actual human being to tell me whether they honestly believed we NEEDED dancefloor uplighting or not. My fiancee and I booked Spencer for our wedding reception at the Park Chalet at the recommendation of the event manager there. After checking up on several other DJs, we picked Spencer because he offered a well defined service and seemed quite professional. Sure, i could have saved a few bucks by renting my own speakers, bringing an ipod, and putting one of my friends in charge of making sure the tunes kept coming but with Spencer, all of this was taken care of for us. I'm no music guy but I definitely appreciated the service and professionalism Spencer offered. Via his website, we sent him a list of music we wanted played (mostly 80s at the request of my wife), a list of music that we didn't want played (chicken dance and all of the cheezy wedding standards), and list of people to speak and times. Spencer called me to confirm the pronounciation of names, double check the schedule, and then took care of the rest. I didn't have to worry about anything else and my guests did appreciate the energy he brought to the dancing and drinking after dinner. Best part of the night? Review is for experiencing Sutherland Entertainment's DJ services, and then hiring them for DJ and Photobooth services. We got to experience Sutherland Entertainment first at a friend's wedding. DJ Cody wasn't just putting on a playlist, but was actively watching what we were responding to and playing music that we liked. The bride and groom's first dance was Alesso, and so he kept the music in that theme, playing mostly EDM to the dance floor. He was regularly mixing and scratching as well, something that typically goes unnoticed. The girlfriend (at the time!) and I gave our kudos to DJ Cody, commenting that the trap music wasn't going as well as the EDM, so he knew which direction to go with the crowd. Awesome. Fast forward and my fiancee (the aforementioned "girlfriend"!) and I were looking for our own DJ. We got in touch with Spencer from Sutherland Entertainment, who handled all of our communications and planning. Spencer put us in touch with DJ Kevin (KEPIKmusic.com) as our official DJ for our reception. Throughout the planning process, DJ Kevin was very accessible via email and phone. Sitting on a phone call with him didn't feel like work and he was extremely accomodating, seamlessly splice a song for the Father/Daughter dance. Super easy going, fast to schedule, we never had conflict with him. Kevin was sharp and asked us for certain things, such as a script for the reception, which played a large role in people enjoying our reception. We had special announcements we wanted to make and Kevin absolutely nailed it. During the reception, he was constantly in touch with us keeping us up to date on where we were in our schedule. He was flexing to every event and did a fantastic job being the ultimate collaborator in the largest "one and done" party we've ever thrown in our lives. DJ Kevin was really hype at the reception himself. He joined in and made sure that the atmosphere was pumped up for our entrances and dances. The dance music itself was a hit and everyone stayed on the dance floor until the very end. DJ Kevin absolutely nailed it. I would absolutely recommend him to any of our other friends! Photobooth: We had a photobooth as well as a photo backdrop for greeting guests. Everything was set up before we showed up to the venue. The photobooth technician was warm, welcoming, helpful and had a great sense of humor as my friends all reported that the technician couldn't stop laughing and commenting on their creativity with the photos. The photoback drops were rather large, able to squeeze in groups of 8-10 people. I was able to create my own photo strip design and Sutherland was happy to accommodate so that I could give my own touch to the guest mementos. Spencer did a great job at our wedding reception; he played guitar during the cocktail hour and provided DJ service for dinner and dancing. He was super helpful during our first meeting, giving useful tips to help us choose our play & do not play lists, and even sharing recommendations for caterers and other vendors during our early stages of planning. Our reception presented a few challenges for any DJ . . . For instance, our venue had a very strict noise policy, and we were warned several times by our venue manager that the DJ absolutely must adhere to it. Spencer patiently answered my questions about this, and during the reception made sure we had music everyone could hear and enjoy without incurring the wrath of our venue manager. We also had a pretty mixed group of guests, with some wanting after-dinner conversation and others wanting to dance - Spencer kept both groups happy and kept us happy too. I especially appreciated the way he checked in with us during the last hour just to make sure there were no songs we especially wanted to hear that he had not played yet. I found Spencer on Yelp! while researching wedding DJs (where else!). My research indicated he was great and knew how to keep a party going. When we met him, I was instantly impressed by his professional demeanor and knowledge of his craft. Having watched Spencer perform on two occasions (My mother was so impressed with the initial meeting that she hired him for her 60th birthday party), I can say without hesitation that he is extremely talented and a true find. If you can book him, you won't be sorry. One detail I would mention, is let Spencer be the professional you are hiring him to be. He does a great job and has great tools that collect clients' input to get a flavor for what the crowd wants, but no need to micromanage. I think we thought we knew what we wanted and we found that in the end, he knew better than we thought we did. Definitely let him do his thing. If all you want is someone to play your favorite 50 songs, you are wasting your money on a DJ who will build on the energy of your party. This talent of his was what most impressed me, as both occasions had diverse crowds with different music tastes.
