The boys got fast food and we were all going to eat outdoors with the pups despite the heat and humidity. There just weren't any spaces for travel trailers available and we almost left and decided to just circle back into the lot, park on the curb in front of the pumps and sit on the curb and eat. Would be 5 stars, but for a travel stop, it wasn't super travel friendly pulling a tiny trailer even.

Just this once, I'll forgive Colorado for putting a rest stop in a town (rather than where you NEED "facilities" and there are no towns nearby) because it's so close to the border. Restrooms: Usually clean and well maintained. Automatic lights may turn off if you're alone and sitting still. Walking: Nice trail up a small hill on the west side. There are benches if you get tired. Dogs: Unfenced "exercise area." Inspect paws for thorns before moving on. Visitor information: The visitor center is open and well staffed during the day. They have free maps and brochures for most of the tourist spots in Colorado. Sometimes they offer free beverages and snacks. Parking: plenty of spaces for cars, RVs, and semis. There are no convenient gas stations or restaurants here. Stop in Ogallala NE or Sterling CO instead; bring your food here and eat it in one of the faux teepees. Advice for newcomers to Colorado: Stopping here is a great way to start adjusting to the altitude. Walk the trail. Drink plenty of water (beginning right now and throughout your stay). Sleep two nights at 5000 feet (Denver or Colorado Springs) before venturing into the mountains.

Great room, but service was disappointing…read more I'll start off with the good. The room was excellent, very clean, roomy, new and comfortable. The beds were particularly great, providing a sound night's rest. Power outlets were plentiful, including ones next to each bed. In terms of price, it was comparable to other area hotels, but a good deal for the quality of the room. With that said, the service really brings down the score with this review. The check-in desk is inside of a gas station and guess what? They only have one attendant running the place. It took a while to check-in and checkout was even worse since the gentleman on duty wasn't paying attention to the hotel side. Housekeeping was rude and inconsiderate. At 10:00 a.m. they started banging on the door, even though I had a do not disturb placard on the outside door handle. "Well, when are you leaving?" He asked. I said checkout was at 11 and I would be out by then. He looked very annoyed and huffed off. Really? Based on other reviews, this seems to be a common issue here. It's a shame the service was so poor, because the quality of the room itself was top notch. If you're looking for a quick place to crash on I-80, I'm not even sure I can recommend this Days Inn since you may have to wait a while to check-in and checkout.

I found a few things to like about the rebuilt rest area: It's new. It's big, with lots of parking. It's relatively safe: there are no hidden spots for spooky characters to hide. The merge back onto I-80 is long and perfectly angled. Some key things are missing--things which traditionally make Nebraska rest areas great. No shelters to protect picnickers from sun or rain or wind. No tornado shelter. No local character. No art/sculptures. No trees. No panoramic views for cars (the tuckers get the view this time). No obvious pet "exercise" area. There's nothing innovative about the interior of the building. There's a cavernous space with no clear purpose. Accessibility was a checklist item but not a true priority. Yes, there are ramps and button-operated doors. But the doors are narrower than some wheelchairs and tight turns are required. I got a few bars of intermittent Verizon 4G signal and 3 bars of ultrafast T-Mobile 5G+. I get the impression that the new design came from someone in another state who had never visited other Nebraska rest areas.

No doors into public restrooms with automated toilet, sink and hand dryer. Hooks in stall for personal items. A family restroom is where you will find a counter top for diaper changes. Plenty of parking for all vehicle types. Metal trash bins all along the parking area. A paved loop pathway leads around the back of the building, past a field, if you like to get some walking in when you stop. In July, we got bitten many, many times by flies (even as we swatted and flapped a jacket about to deter them) so just be aware. I did not see a designated pet area and picnic tables are in full sun, no shelters or tree shade. The information desk attendent was available to answer questions about NE tourism and there are lots of travel brochures available (no charge).
