It was a hat that had a mix matched denim pattern that could be paired with almost any outfit. I had a vision of me buying this hat and it becoming an integral part of my personality. "Oh, there goes the guy with the cool hat walking up 1st ave" onlookers would say as they walked by, jealous of my cool new hat. Cute girls would come up to me at the Wayland and or Ding-a-Ling saying "Oh my god, I love your hat!" ... "You haven't been to East Village Hats!??!?!?!" I passed this shop on the way to pick up my purchases from Nordstrom last night. Note that I've previously stepped inside the shop to survey the selection, and last night I stopped in for what was only supposed to be a quick moment... The owner greeted me and almost immediately started talking prices. This is $20 dollars and we have that for $25 dollars, but this is a little more expensive, and that's this price. Oh, that fascinator is beautiful on you and you can put it layaway. It was just $79 dollars, mind you. Excuse me? It's such a turn-off when people see brown skin and assume that the purchase would be unaffordable without a payment plan! Not to mention, I started off by noting that I was only taking a quick peek on my way to pick up my Nordstrom purchase. Though I promptly told her that I don't need layaway and I pay for things outright, I had already decided that I wouldn't be buying from there. Her fixation on talking to me about price was all I needed to hear. Nothing disgusts me more than when people make assumptions! I have beautiful vintage hats in my collection, fine jewelry and quality costume jewelry, and beautiful bags that I've purchased abroad. She could've had a repeat customer who prioritizes quality goods and, more importantly, quality service.

She was super patient and accomodating during my visits, when I tried all of the hats in her lovely studio, even when I brought mum and fiance along to help me pick. It was hard to narrow down, as so many of her hats are beautiful and very well crafted. I ended up with a spectacular little thing with a gorgeous veil, where she could name a place and time every one of the materials came from. The hat is fabulous by publci consnsus, upon seeing it, a friend of mine went to get hairpin flowers ordered and loved them as well. I am definitely coming back for some of her tiny berets later in the year. I can't recommend Leah highly enough - wonderful woman with great taste and superb quality materials that make her hats stand out.

By chance I was walking by this place yesterday...I was very glad that I stopped in. Last week I…read morehad purchased a nice, but rather ordinary black, down bomber jacket at Nordstrom that had a 'faux' fur collar. It struck me as I saw all these NYers walking around with a similar jacket (I'm from LA), that mine would be more striking with a 'real' fur collar. I start talking with Peter (the owner) and told him what I wanted. While listening to me, I could tell he was ten steps ahead of me as he'd done this many times before. He showed me a few fur choices and then I decided upon a piece of black fox fur that he had somewhere in the back of his rather large store. We unzipped and unsnapped my cheap 'fun fur' collar and then I left it with him. He called me today...less than 24 hours later...and told me it was ready for pickup. He knew that I was leaving tomorrow for LA and did a 'rush' job as a favor. Of course I would have been fine with him mailing to me...but this way I got to use it while on this trip (and it was cold). When I picked it up, I was amazed...it was beyond perfect, just what I wanted and more. It was a bit bigger, fuller, more substantial that I had anticipated. The revamped collar gave my mundane jacket an upscale look along with a nice new 'wow' factor. I would highly recommend this place. The staff (including his lovely wife June at the front desk) were beyond friendly and helpful. I didn't inquire much about what else they did, but it looks like they do all sorts of cleaning, repairs, sell new coats, hats, etc...anything related to fur. I realize that fur is not everyone's 'cup of tea'...and I respect that...but if you do want a great fur experience, please go see Peter at Dimitrios Furs...on 30th near 7th Avenue.
