This place is an area staple good food at reasonable prices. I like the club sandwich and can say that it hasn't changed over the past year or so. Many restaurants have changed either the size or price of their offerings due to the current economic conditions. I really don't mind the bumping prices as long as it's not a bumping prices and smaller quantity of food. I did notice that they weren't as busy as they were the last time I visited. read more

Viking Chili Bowl was one of my fiancé's all time favorite breakfast places growing up, so I was super pumped to give it a try this morning. I had the Mexican skillet and it was EXCELLENT! It was bursting with flavor in all the best ways. The onions and peppers were cooked perfectly. The meal itself was under 5 dollars and a very generous portion at that. Probably the second visit to Viking Chili Bowl and my last! I paid $24.50 (that I'll never get back) for two meals. How hard can it be to make breakfast? I ordered a pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage plate. I asked for the sausage to be well done. My guest ordered a burger and chili. Everything was cold, the scrambled eggs were so well done they were brown. Sausage I ordered well done was so dry I couldn't cut it. The pancakes were over cooked and dry. My guest said her hamburger was ok but chili was cold. When I complained to the man at the register, he said "why didn't you send it back?" I would have, if the waitress ever came back to our table. Generous portions and the food comes out quick. stay away from the toast as every waitress in the place touches it without washing their hands and after touching a million other things. I've even witnessed a worker eating and putting toast through the toaster at the same time, super gross. read more

The wife and I ate there this afternoon. Service was great and couldn't have been happier with the level of service. Now, what I didn't care for..... the food. Most of the food has no seasoning unless you get something "ethnic". I had a chorizo burrito, and it was great, the wife had eggs with sausage links, and the sausage was greasy and without flavor. We Had ordered chili to take home for later. It's in the name so it must be good, right? Wrong. I've had chili from all over this country, and this was the most unlike chili, and without flavor. What the hell is this brown mush? First experience and last with this place. Great service, but I don't think Gordon Ramsey could fix your food. read more

The food here was great! I got a half order of biscuits and gravy and my boyfriend got the hungry man's skillet. I tried both and they were cooked well. The inside of the dining area is nice as well, it has a much older feeling to it as there are no TVs on the walls and you pay at the front register instead of at your table. Most of the people who go here are older couples and families. My only complaint was the waitress stuck her finger in my gravy on accident when sitting my plate down but I just used a spoon to scoop out that spot of gravy. I must admit I am a big fan of Viking Chili Bowl. Breakfast this week was so very good! I ordered up the veggie skillet with no mushrooms and no cheese. My eggs, over easy, were perfect. Coffee was hot and good. Husby had the Viking Special and there was not a morsel on his plate! I highly recommend Viking Chili Bowl for breakfast or lunch. You won't be disappointed. read more

We ate at the VCB every Saturday. You couldn't ask for better service and the food is very good. This last Saturday we placed our orders, our drinks were brought to our table, my husband ordered water and after drinking half of his glass he noticed there was a COCKROACH in his glass. We asked to speak to the manager or owner and the hostess came to our table. She took the glass to the back and said she would show the manager and our meals were on the house. The manager NEVER came to our table and after experiencing this and thinking about cockroaches and if they are in the ice bin or glasses then they must be everywhere! If I were a new patron, my star rating would be much lower. Stopped in for a good breakfast before a road trip, particularly because we hadn't been there in a bit. Special of the day was steak and eggs for $10.35. The 'steak' that was delivered was a joke, I don't know why they bothered asking how we wanted it cooked. It was so thin, full of fat and gristle, there were only a few bites of decent meat to eat once you carved it out. The biscuits and gravy were ok, I don't recall them always being so heavy on the pepper flavor. Hash browns were at least hot, but they had been cooked too fast, burned the outside. I can't believe I have never been to this place! Inside, the restaurant is clean and simple. The service was very friendly and attentive right from the start. There is a great menu with about anything you could think of. I got the tuna salad with sweet potato fries and my sisters each got an omelet and a skillet. All of our food was great. A group of friends and myself went here for brunch. The ambiance wasn't the restaurants strong point and not what we were expecting given the "Viking" in the name. I was expecting wood or stone walls, dead animal heads, weapons, and tapestries decorating the walls... no, none of that at all (although they do have a couple of Troll statues near the entrance). The decor is pretty much your boring diner look. Okay, but nothing special. The food could be described the same way, standard diner fare that is okay but nothing real special. I had the Viking breakfast and a bowl of their chili. The chili was decent, but nothing special. The breakfast, which had pancakes, toast, biscuits and gravy, and eggs was pretty good and I enjoyed it. My friends seemed to enjoy the food as well and though they were getting ready to stop offering Belgian waffles (which they stop after noon), they made some for one of my friends. Another friend said that their chili omelette was really good as well. So all in all, a pretty good place to eat if you are in the area getting ready to go to the mini-golf/funland that is nearby. read more

They are on you like you're their only customer, actually care about what you're eating or what you need, and make the whole dining experience great. The VCB (Viking Chilli Bowl) has been around for years and is one of the staple breakfast places my family always ate when I was a kid. I still go back from time to time for some non-trendy mid-west diner food. Their eggs, pancakes, and ham are all excellent. No so much the biscuits and gravy. Dry, and not flavorful at all. Oddly for a place with Chilli in the name, their chilli isn't that great. Decor is what you'd expect from a diner. Lots of pastel blues and pinks, roomy booths, tables down the middle. Service has always been fast and friendly. This is a great place for inexpensive breakfast food served diner style. There's something to be said for that in my opinion. read more

Our food was as cold as our waitress' heart. We usually have great service but today they sat us in the dark. I really wanted more orange juice and the butter on our toast did not melt. I've been coming here for, like, my entire life. My parents had joint custody and every weekend that I spent at my Dad's house in Valpo involved a trip to the Viking. So I have lots of good memories and nostalgia associated with this establishment. Quintessential greasy spoon. They don't even make them like this back in Cali.
