I stayed here a few weeks ago for business - the week we were there, this was the only hotel we could find that was walking distance of the financial district and wasn't near the Tenderloin. I have a hard time rating it, though, because everything was great except for one thing, but it was a pretty big thing: my bed was HARD AS A ROCK, so I didn't sleep very well, which is kind of the whole point of a hotel. It sucks, though, cause everything else about the place was great - certainly was a great price (not exactly cheap, but way cheaper than anywhere else in the heart of the city where you also aren't going to get shanked.) Checkin took 1 minute. Checkout took one minute. Everyone working there was super friendly. Wifi worked great the whole time I was there. Admittedly, the view from the room was into a dingy alley, but there was still great air-flow. I had plenty of space (might be a *little* cramped for two people, but was fine for one person). The room didn't feel brand new, but it didn't feel run-down, either, and was perfectly clean. And despite being right in the heart of the city, the room I got, at least, was completely quiet (other than occasionally air conditioning noises from other units in the alley). And man, the location could not be more central to everything. The included breakfast was also clearly an afterthought (just some boring toast, boring cereal, coffee and from-concentrate juice) - but I was totally fine with that, as I probably wouldn't have eaten it anyway, being I was less than a quarter mile away from about half a dozen great Chinese bakeries, so I tried a different one each morning. Way better than any hotel breakfast, and crazy cheap, too. The bed was just too way too uncomfortable, though - 5 stars if you like really exceptionally hard beds... otherwise, I'd keep looking. read more

This hotel isn't super fancy, but it's nice, well appointed and most importantly, clean. The rooms are basic, standard amenities, and pretty small. The staff is so nice and helpful. They are pleasant and accommodating. We stayed here for the boyfriends birthday weekend and they were always nice, smiling and patient. The AC in our room worked GREAT! They have a great location, a parking garage with a decent price per night. The only negative is the mattresses. They are thin, pretty firm and noisy. Had a business trip that I decided to turn into a weekend with my partner. I chose the hotel because it was a close enough walk to my meeting location and not crazy expensive. The fact that the room key is an actual key is a little strange but no biggie. The rooms are small. My queen bed seemed more like a full and the bathroom had no tub just a shower and a tight one at that. But room was super clean. Walls are thin. On our first night we could hear our neighbors having some very um personal moments. I didn't try the breakfast but my partner did and he said it was sad with bad coffee and stale croissants. There are plenty of places around to eat though including a bomb Yucatec Taco spot across the street. The hood is fine. It's a city. Never felt unsafe. I would stay again but only for a day not the four we did. I miss having the little things like in room coffee or even good coffee in the lobby. read more

So what can I write about the SW Hotel? Bring plenty of cash. We booked the hotel based mostly on positive reviews we had read on Tripadvisor and on other travel sites. However, our three nights there was not nearly as glowing. We arrived at the hotel early after a long trip from Minneapolis. My girlfriend was nervous that our room would not be available until 3 pm. Fortunately, our king bed was available, though they had not fulfilled my request to have a quiet room. Originally we were put in a room with a street view. We immediately asked to be moved. Also, when we arrived I asked for our keys and to my amazement we received only one key (traditional -not electronic). I was curtly told that if I lost that key I would have to pay $5.00 for a replacement. When I later explained that there were two guests, I was given a second key. So things did not get off to a very good start. We immediately went up to our room. As I mentioned, our original request was not fulfilled. I had to go back down and request to change rooms, as the guest phone did not appear to work. Subsequently we found out that the instructions to reach the front desk were out of date. But nobody told us. A simple # was needed in front of the 0. There room instructions had not been updated. In going back to the elevator (we were on the third floor) there was an uneven step which I tripped and fell sideways on. It was not marked clearly. Fortunately it was near a window on the side of the floor. I should also mention that the floor plans are not clear except for the exit signs. Each floor has a dull and felt a little creepy, though we did get used to the floors in the end. The new room we were sent to was cold, musty and had not been aired. Everything about their rooms has an old style feel about it. You get a sense that at one time this may have been some kind of boarding house or cheap hotel. My girlfriend initially felt claustrophobia, and we were seriously thinking about changing hotels, but we decided to stay given how tired we were that day.After our time in Minneapolis we found the rooms very small. Our room had two small tables, two chairs, a TV and mini-fridge. The closet was very small and not designed to hold clothes for two guests. Subsequently, we discovered that there was more storage under the bed. Regarding staffing:- Except for Jessica, their staff needed training and especially sensitivity and customer service skills. Getting accurate information was like pulling teeth.Jessica was their only employee who was on top of her game. A couple of staff members preferred to stay in the back office. At times I felt I was dealing with amateurs. Another problem was that reaching the front desk from the bedroom was a pain. They did not tell us that there a # was needed and when I called the main number, I found out that I was being charged for a local call. This was removed upon checking out. Breakfast is complimentary and basic. Eggs, cereal, pastries, coffee and fruit are offered. Breakfast is served at the rear of the hotel where ther are tables and chairs, which are adequate. In fact this was the best part of our experience in the hotel. There are no dining facilities. If our friends had not been living in San Francisco, we would have not had as easy a time at getting around. The hotel is on the border between Chinatown, North Beach and Little Italy. Except for Chinatown, we felt very safe. The streets along Broadway are a little confusing and I got lost when I walked to Chinatown. Getting directions from the hotel staff was frustrating, and again except for Jessica, I would have been totally lost, particularly getting groceries and supplies from the nearby Walgreens. Getting around, meaning booking tours; don't book anything through them. When booking a tour cash has to be paid for a commission. Later I found out that this is a normal practice in San Francisco. And if you book a room directly with the hotel, there is a convention fee on top of all the other taxes. In this case to avoid all the hidden fees, book through a travel website that tells you up front what fees and taxes are charged. PROS: Conveniently located Decent complimentary breakfast -limited hours Free wi-fi Clean bathrooms and vanities. CONS Rooms are small and in our case were musty. Hotel instructions may be out of date when you arrive Local calls are NOT free -and are tacked on to your bill. Most of the staff need customer service training, and we did not always feel we were getting the best and most accurate information In booking trips through them, they want cash and a deposit/commission. For example, we booked a Big Bus tour. I paid for three tickets, but were not told that the tickets were not valid after 5 pm. So what is my overall rating? It's not fancy*, but it's everything you need at a great price. Super clean, friendly staff, parking for cheap (for SF) and, as everyone has noted, LOCATION is awesome. You can walk chinatown and north beach out your door, and it's an easy walk to Union Square for shopping. I stayed here recently, when I was taking my mom to see Beach Blanket Babylon, and it's the perfect place to launch for the show, and stumble home afterward. We felt totally safe, too. *By "it's not fancy" I mean "it's not the $450 Westin Market Street". The rooms has spacious bathrooms with organic bath products, and there is cable TV. SIMPLY WONDERFUL I can't rave enough about the SW! It is clean, stylish, and the staff is excellent!! The rooms are on the small side, but by no means are they cramped. Quite a bargin for the price. I had read reviews and was worried it was going to be noisy. IT WAS NOT NOISY AT ALL ! The parking garage is conveniently located right at the Hotel, and the $30.00 fee is competitive. We couldn't have been in a better location. The SW straddles the borders of North Beach and China Town. We left our car in the garage and walked everywhere. To Fisherman's Warf, to the Financial District, and all around China Town and North Beach! The SW staff was very friendly. They offered restaurant suggestion and gave good directions to where we wanted to go! Honestly, I had second thought about writing this review! Coming into SF for a national meeting meant that every hotel in the vicinity was more ridiculously priced than usual. We were able to book this hotel on orbitz for 208/ night before taxes. Luckily it was pretty much walking distance from anything we needed. 20 mins to the Moscone Center where are meeting was, 20 mins from Fisherman's Warf and Ghiradelli Square. Around the block from Chinatown and northbeach.. Overall, a great location. They also have a few nice amenities including complimentary wifi and breakfast (cereal, muffins, juice and coffee.. Nothing sans gluten, but great for all my coresidents). The front desk is kind and curious. English wasn't fantastic, but certainly good enough to get the job done. The rooms are pretty small but have comfortable beds, a mini fridge, a small closet, vanity, and under the bed storage. The bathroom was clean and stocked with the usuals. Water didn't get very hot and had very minimal water pressure. All was well within my basic requirements in a hotel with one exception, the noise passage through the walls and under the adjoining door to a room with unknown occupants was a little ridiculous. Coughing could be heard all night, any talking, at night even loud whispering. Luckily my neighbors didn't like the tv on all night or anything, but it was still really uncomfortable hearing so much of their privacy, and assuming they were hearing mine! Overall I would definitely stay here again if need be, as the location is great and you can certainly be quite comfortable. Caution considering the noise travel as my stay could have been miserable if I'd had different neighbors. Also, price seemed a bit high to me for what you get. read more

The location was perfect. So many restaurants within walking distance! Sam's and the Vietnamese place across the street were great! Easy walk to BART, Embarcadero, Lombard Street, the financial district, etc. The rooms were extremely clean and comfortable. Very simple, but the rooms were bright and cheery. The one issue is that the walls are extremely thin. Not an issue for us, but the first night, someone complained about us being loud, and we were talking at a normal volume at 1015pm. Which leads me to the next part...the staff. Every single person we encountered were helpful, friendly, and professional, but one person stood out. Annie works at night. It was about 1130pm on our first night and as we were coming back in after a short walk, we mentioned the complaint to the front desk. Annie switched our room to one where we wouldn't have neighbors that we would bother. She explained that a lot of guests are international, and their sleep is important after a long flight. She also stressed how important it was for us to enjoy ourselves. She also recommended restaurants that were spot on. So helpful and kind. SW should give her a raise for making us feel so at home. I checked the windows and yep they were closed and yet the music, crowds and police sirens were loud enough to keep me awake. This is a great hotel in a great location. My boyfriend booked this for a quick weekend getaway. It was going to be our first trip to SF. I was a little worried about it being a non-name, and in Chinatown. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! When we started driving to SF from LA, the weather was terrible, so we thought we would have to reschedule. We called the hotel and told them the situation, and the front desk clerk told us she would waive any change fees and change it to whatever future dates we wanted! What chain hotel would do that? We decided to go anyways, and take a chance on the weather, b/c we wanted to see the Chinese New Year parade. Once we got there, they were super friendly and helpful. Parking was only $21 for one overnight, and they let us keep it there for an afternoon after we checked out! Holiday Inn charges over $40! The room was a nice size and SUPER clean! I loved hearing all the commotion in of the alleys down below, it was great! All in all, this was a perfect no frill hotel in a great location. You can't really ask for any more for the price. If you want doormen, fancy mints, and quiet crickets at night...this is not your place. If you want to feel and hear the magic of Chinatown, but still be close enough to get to other parts of town, this is the place to stay. Bad- continental breakfast is not much. Coffee is bland and they give you bread with a toaster. I remember seeing a peanut butter jar...rooms small, a lot of outside noise. Partying outside by strip clubs and bars starts at 9 pm and goes strong through 2 am. Windows and walls are not sound proof. Weird- this hotel still uses KEYS. That's right, not card keys but a key-key. That's old school. They charge you $20 if you lose your key. I'm used to just tossing my key card. So I was paranoid about losing my key during this trip. Ugly- first night (Friday) I was kept awake by bad karaoke singing from the Bow Bow cocktail bar. My room was on the 4th floor facing Grant St. So you may want to request a room not facing Grant. At 2 am I heard gunshots. Maybe 5 shots. Then it was completely silent. Before this there was yelling, people laughing, cars honking....then pop pop pop pop pop and it was like the whole world stopped. So quiet until police sirens. Then around 2:30-3am a series of Streep sweeper trucks and garbage trucks. Again if you are a deep sleeper and don't mind the noise then this place isn't so bad. Anyway, I used to live off Paradise Road in Modesto. So gunshots and police choppers are familiar to me. read more

Front desk was very pleasant--they let me see a room ahead of time and my folks had zero complaints for their stay. Room was smallish, but definitely adequate, they seemed recently renovated. My folks loved the proximity to all the things to see in Chinatown. Can't beat this place for $99 a night (I booked through Expedia). The rock like bed messed my neck up for the day. The rooms are actually small ours were 12 x 12 the bathroom was 51/2 x 71/2 and the closet 2 x 11/2 very nice small and clean and we were comfortable too,the amenities were terra pure organic natural,shampoo,lotion,and a natural cleansing which was a plus.The staff was extremely friendly and very helpful, we were on the 3rd floor and the three nights that we were there we heard NO noise,the free breakfast was just o.k.The hotel is in the heart of North Beach / Chinatown will definitely stay again if I can get the same room. Here's the scoop: It's the best deal in downtown San Fran, with a good location; rooms are bare minimum and outdated, yet clean - including very clean bathrooms; amenities (shampoo, body lotion, etc) are actually quite decent; front staff is helpful; complimentary breakfast is coffee and tea and a variety of the typical cheap sugary carbs, including pastries, a waffle maker, oatmeal, cereal (no eggs or healthy protein). Basically, if you're looking for a well-located place to crash, it totally works at a great price for the area. Booked a room here for NYE weekend and was very happy with the accomadations. We booked early and got 2 rooms for $195 each with a queen bed. The location is fantastic. The hotel is located on the same block China town ends and across the way from the entrance of the hotel you can see LIttle Italy. It's a 20 minute jaunt to Union Square (by the Macy's) and an even shorter walk to Fisherman's Wharf. There are a number of bars in the area and the outdoor seating at many of the Italian restaurants make for a casual and relaxing evening in the city. The room itself was clean and the bathroom was spotless; clean grout is always appreciated. My only complaint is that the TV placement was less than ideal since it is recessed into one corner of the room. But now I'm just being overly critical. Channel selection was great, we watched some movies on FX and "Too Cute" on Animal Planet...how can you say no to labrador and golden puppies?! Also, if you need parking it's $20 or $25 and space IS limited. My friends and I took Bart instead and paid a taxi $10 to take us to the hotel. If you wanted to save the money, one could also easily walk to a Bart station too. We did that on the way home and despite being hungover, survived the walk with our duffel bags. Decently cheap, and given its price point/amenities I really like the room decor. The staff is really nice as well. I like this hotel a lot more than many fancier places. It's right next door to City Lights bookstore, and Chinatown in general. If you can afford it, make sure you spring the little bit extra for a granite-counter bathroom. Don't do it for the surface per se, but those bathrooms tend to be roomier and have a rather comfy bathtub/shower combo. This was my first experience with a hotel room of this size in the staes, but I found it absolutely delightful! I shared a Deluxe Double Bed room with my boyfriend for $129 for one night. Perhaps it was pricier compared to other places you could get for those accommodations, but the convenient location and simplicity of the room was just fine! It made me think of just how much "wasted" space you find in your average US hotel, and the room actually reminded me a bit of my travels abroad. Minimalist and efficient use of space! They were also very accommodating for our motorcycle gear the following morning as we walked around for breakfast, which I appreciate. My only complaint was that the staff did not seem very motorcycle-friendly. They insisted that our two motorcycles would take up a whole car space and thus incur the $28.50 fee a night, even though I insisted that motorcycles can easily take up those unused spaces around the perimeter. Thankfully, however, I found free motorcycling parking a scant 0.3 miles from the hotel, which saved me the trouble. For the location and quality of the rooms, I recommend this place to anyone! read more

Staff was friendly and very helpful. Room was really small but clean and we'll kept. Continental breakfast was pretty pathetic but I don't really care about the food. Close to cable cars as Pier 39. I was only there for 2 nights but I would definitely stay there again. read more

Love the location. It beats spending tons of $ on a hotel room in San Francisco. Very close to North Beach and the Pier. The nightlife is great if you like going out to bars. The one thing really enjoyed was the underground parking garage they have (for those who all know about SF...parking is no joke). Rooms were clean, hotel was nice and quiet. read more

Stayed at SW for 6 nights and it was a wonderful experience! It was clean, conveniently located - near a major MUNI bus stop, great eateries that open late, and even a Walgreens that is opened until 12:00 am on weekdays. It is also near many of the major tourists attractions, so you can just walk everywhere. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Also, as a woman traveling alone, I felt very safe at the hotel and area. read more
