This restaurant caught our eye while driving along the highway near the Petrified Forest National Park. Located next to a gas station, we honestly didn't know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was incredibly clean, spacious, and welcoming. We spotted the sign around lunchtime, planning to grab a quick bite, but ended up spending over an hour enjoying a fantastic meal. Sometimes I wonder why more restaurants in the city aren't like this! We ordered chole bhature, mango lassi, sweet lassi, paneer curry, and garlic naan. Everything was freshly made, packed with flavor, and honestly some of the best Indian food we've had in a long time. The service was quick and friendly. You'll notice plenty of truck drivers stopping by, which is usually a great sign that the food is worth it! The only downside is that the restrooms are located outside since the restaurant shares the space with another business. Other than that, this place is absolutely worth a stop if you're traveling through the area. Stopped by during our road trip and decided get some Punjabi Breakfast. I am so glad we did. Pls note that this is a Dhaba (In India Dhabas are mostly small hole in the wall kinda earery catering to highway drivers and passengers) mostly catering to Truckers with spacious seating arrangements! Not your typical Indian Restaurant. As soon as we walked in we ordered at the front desk, Alu Paratha, Chai, Lassi, Samosa and Goat Biryani. The Chai portion was HUGE. So was the Paratha and Biryani. The Paratha was a winner and so was the Biryani. Didn't care for the Samosa because it seemed like Frozen ones! The dough inside was not cooked through. The Biryani was good, it had decent amount of meat and the flavor was amazing! Again this is a popular stop for Truckers, pls don't expect anything fancy like restaurants. Yes, I know it's at a truck stop, but don't knock it until you try it. We stopped here because it was recommended to us by some locals. And I have to admit, we were pleasantly surprised. We both ordered the goat curry. It was flavorful, and had a decent amount of heat. The garlic naan was fresh and delicious. The milk cake was flavorful, but might have been sitting in the fridge for awhile. I bet if it was fresh it would be delicious! Service was just okay, and the ambiance could use a little bit of work. You have the choice between going to some toxic fast food place (they have BK in the gas station) or you can get astonishingly satisfying solidly made Indian food right next door for the same price. One main course along with a naan will satisfy two people and it's real cooking. Nothing over the top: this isn't fine dining or even top-notch Indian food. But it's very good and it made me very happy on a cold winter's night driving through town on a long road trip. Highly recommend this place. Five star Indian food at a truckstop? You bet! Punjabi Dhaba's have been popping up all over the interstates to bring a taste of home to the increasing amount of Punjabi truck drivers. We were lucky that we found Swaad Stop, because it is one of the most delicious stops for Indian food that you will find! Both times we have taken the food to go, and I saw some posts about small portions, but we feel the portions are generous, and they get a lot of food into those little containers! The garlic naan is the best ever! So light and fluffy with the perfect amount of garlic! So far we have tried the butter chicken and the chicken tikka masala, and both were delicious with tasty basmati rice. For the vegetarian dishes, we have tried the saag paneer and yellow daal, and if all of their vegetarian dishes are this tasty, I may stop eating meat! Luckily, I have occasional meetings in Holbrook, and can't wait to work my way through the menu! Service has always been fast and friendly, and the restaurant is roomy and clean. If you are in the Holbrook area, don't keep on trucking down I-40 without taking a detour to Swaad Stop in the Hopi Travel Plaza. Just look for the dinosaurs! ;) read more

A great Indian pit stop on the way from Santa Fe to Flagstaff, this spot is a favorite among truckers--and for good reason. The food is freshly made and packed with flavor. The garlic Naan was no good. There was so much garlic on it but for some reason it had no flavor. It was also super burnt. I do not recommend getting it. I'm vegetarian so I got the potatoes balls in a curry (I'm sorry I forgot what's it called). Although that one was very sweet. I liked it. Five stars because the food was amazing, service was friendly, the music vids were fun, and it's so very clean. I'm so thankful that Indians are making their mark on the trucking industry. I'm hoping that more truck stops will be offering Indian food and that means more healthy vegetarian and vegan offerings for us all! Now, that being said, we ordered lamb biryani (slow cooked lamb with seasoned rice) accompanied by a seasoned yogurt sauce (raita)! We also ordered saag paneer (puréed spinach sauce and Indian cheese cubes) that came with basmati rice, garlic naan, Thumbs Up Cola (Indian style cola), and a salty Lassi. We come from Berkeley CA, one of the largest ex-pat Indian communities. We've also visited India and Nepal. We know and love many regions of Indian cuisine! This is Northern Indian food, Punjabi style. The lamb biryani was, bar none, the best I've ever had. The fragrance was amazing. The lamb was tender and delicious! The portion was enough for two. It was garnished with raw red onions, cilantro, and a beautifully seasoned raita. This was a taste sensation! I've never had fresher, hotter, and more pillowy naan than here! Best ever! The saag paneer was not to my taste but it was still very well seasoned. In CA, it's made with spinach only. Here, it was made with all sorts of greens so it tasted mostly of kale and beet greens. In India, it's made with a sturdy green that's similar to a mustard green. I prefer spinach only or the type you get in Northern India. I loved the salty lassi. The spices were great and the salt really brought out the flavor. On every table was a big jar of house made carrot pickle. A meal isn't an Indian meal unless there are pickles! I didn't care for it, preferring a jalapeño pickle or a garlic pickle, but the fact that there was a pickle condiment available was amazing! Gosh, if I lived here, I would be stopping by at least weekly! The menu is HUGE! The portions are HUGE! The cost is so reasonable for fresh and delicious food made on-site. Honestly, I don't know why you'd go to a Pilot or Love's Truck Stop and settle for crappy Subway, Arby's or some other fast food when for just about the same price you can get healthy Indian food. read more

This place is in the middle of nowhere. We were hungry and had to get gas, so we stopped by the gas station attached to the dhaba. Front staff was very friendly and the food was fantastic. 5 stars for curry, 3 stars for naan, and I'm choosing to take them at their best. As many have said--this is a truck stop restaurant catering to Punjabi truck drivers, and the food is accordingly authentic (though I didn't ask for it to be spicy, so it wasn't). As far as I know this is the only place in Northern AZ where you can get goat meat. Goat karahi was super flavorful, had fresh vegetables in it, and the goat meat was cooked perfectly and was a nice cut with some pieces still on the bone. My only complaint might just be that it was very salty, and water isn't free here. Turns out curries here come with free rice, so there was no need to get the naan, which tasted no better than storebought anyways. read more

After a long 4 days of apocalyptic desert camping, we pulled into the Hopi Travel Plaza for what was supposed to be Burger King. I saw the sign for this place walking in, and immediately remembered what my friend told me. He said to always get Indian food if you see it at a truck stop / travel plaza or off a freeway exit in the middle of nowhere. That this food is made by first generation people from India, for indians. And it's what they feed their families and other immigrant truck drivers. That it is authentically spiced and is flavor over flash. He was NOT wrong. We were legit the only non-Indian people there, and I was really excited after that because I knew it'd be a flavorful experience. This was seriously some of the best Indian food I've ever had. I got a mango lassi that was made fresh. It wasn't watery at all, and was all flavor. It helped settle my stomach from the weekend as well. Nothing here tasted like it came from a can. For a side I had fresh puri. It was basically amazing fry bread even though it wasn't fry bread. It was puffy, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I dipped that in my tikka masala which was thicc with a kicc. They did NOT skimp out on. It didn't burn my mouth or anything, it was thoroughly enjoyable and the spices did NOT hold back. The tikka masala chicken was tender and VERY good. Nice big fat thick pieces of chicken. The sauce was just.. thick, flavorful, creamy, spicy... even the rice had a good healthy kick. Each table had a little container of infused Indian chili oil for those who wanted to get a bit more kick! Before I even got back on the road I was texting fellow campers to let them know to go here if they pass it. There was a wait for the food, but they made everything absolutely as fresh as can be and it was worth it.
