Beautifully designed salon - very light and bright. I ran into this salon while on a stroll of E 5th street a few weeks ago and it lingered in my mind. I made an appointment online - very quick and easy. Closer to my date, I received an email requesting me to confirm my arrival. Upon confirmation I received an email with parking directions - be sure to follow these instructions! I was confident in where I was going but completely underestimated my ability to get here on time. (Traffic, new parking area, etc.) I ran late and received a call from Louie who was so kind and helpful on the phone. When I arrived to the salon Louie greeted me and tended to me throughout my appointment making sure I was comfortable and offered me a drink. Aaron was my stylist and did an exceptional job. I booked a consultation just prior to my appointment and we talked about my expectations. I had a great experience with Aaron who kept it professional and made the long process bearable. I only have amazing things to say about my experiences at Swamp Mermaid Beauty Project! I first went in a few months ago for a consultation for microblading my eyebrows. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a nice gentleman at the front desk named Louie who welcomed me in, made nice small talk, and offered me a beverage while I waited. I then met with the owner, Jody, who was very friendly and spent plenty of time answering all of my questions (I had a ton!) and educating me about the process. After talking with her, my mind was at ease and I was SO excited to get my brows done by her! I went in a few weeks later for my first session (you get two sessions included in the cost). I was pretty nervous for the first session, but the team kept my mind at ease. It was a very relaxing environment with nice music playing and a clean fuzzy blanket to place over you while you're getting microbladed. The session took a few hours and I left looking like an angry bird- but trust the process! After less than a week of healing, my brows looked INCREDIBLE and so NATURAL! After six weeks, I went back in for my second session - the "perfecting" session. This session took less than an hour total and was super chill. Jody evaluated my brows to see what parts of my brows needed a little extra love after 6 weeks of healing. I was initially excited to book with Jody from Swamp Mermaid Beauty Project after seeing her work online, but the experience ended up being disappointing and unprofessional. She canceled our appointment just two hours before, citing that she was sick--despite having a strict 24-hour cancellation policy where clients are charged the full price if they cancel late. Afterward, I reached out to politely ask if there was any flexibility in pricing, but received no response. When I followed up days later, she replied saying we "weren't the right fit" and declined to provide her services. While I respect that artists can set their rates and choose their clients, ignoring messages, canceling last minute, and not upholding your own policies is unprofessional and left a bad impression. read more

Positives: posh salon in a convenient area of town. Relatively easy to book and get in fast. Negatives: extremely overpriced for the quality of service. Debated writing this but here's my story. For the past every year of my life I've been blonde. Last year, I decided to go a little darker (just like everyone else) and ended up a lot darker. I actually really liked it except for the fact that every 4 weeks I had to go in to get my roots touched up. The original reason I went darker was to have less maintenance not more. So with that in mind *enter Swamp Mermaid* I tell Sara, who had dyed my hair darker once previously, my backstory and tell her I want to work to get back to my natural color. This is where she should have walked me through what that process... instead she just goes to work. The first thing she tried was removing my color in a gentle way. This didn't change my hair color at all. Then she does a bleach mask.. the whole time I'm joking like "don't let me walk out of here orange". No no I wouldn't do that she says. Great. I did walk out of there with orange/ginger hair. For this I don't blame her.. I just wish she would have told me what this process looked like before hand. Next she didn't take the bleach to my roots because it would lighten my roots more than the colored part... makes sense. Accept she did take it to my natural root everywhere accept for the front of my face. *see pic below*. I pull my hair back a lot and there is a huge straight lined chunk of hair that is brown and the rest is orange. I paid Sara $500. $62 and some change per hour. This is more than I make an hour in my job. So the reason that I am rating so low is because if you are asking to be paid like a professional then you need to run your services like a professional and do small things like explain the process and what the end results will look like and set expectations. Hollie is a gem. I stumbled in almost at random - I was working super long hours on the eastside, had been sweating I'm the sun, hadn't washed my hair in like a week, and realized I didn't have enough time between finishing work on a Friday and the start time of a small gathering for my sister in law's bday to go home and shower. I didn't want to be late, but really didn't fancy showing up to the gathering looking and smelling like a swamp monster... then I had the idea to just call the nearest salon and see if I could pop in for a wash and blow-dry. I can't tell you how happy I am that I called Swamp Mermaid. Hollie saw me about a half hour later- right after she finished with her last client (who, completely coincidentally, is a friend!) She put me at ease right away, was warm, attentive, funny, cool, and even did a consult to talk about re-styling my very sad post-pandemic bad haircut. She made my hair look and feel and smell so amazing that I immediately scheduled the next available haircut with her, and I went back the next day to buy all the products she had used on me. Fast forward a few weeks - I got to visit Hollie again and this time got a life-changing haircut. She is not afraid to make all the layers happen. She understands fine, wavy, frizzy hair with cowlicks, and she knows I don't want to be fussing or fighting with it. Now I don't have to! Previous to getting my hair done with Sara at Swamp Mermaid, I didn't trust anyone in the Austin area with my hair. I first got my hair done by her after receiving a botched haircut at Supercuts that she was able to fix with ease. I had such a great experience, so much so that every haircut afterward has been booked with her. A couple months later, I decided I wanted to switch things up and dye my virgin hair with a pink balayage for the summer. Sara did an exceptional job! Jody is an absolute master at semi-permanent makeup. She not only has amazing technical ability, but takes time to listen to what you're looking for and skillfully customizes her work for each unique client. Her eye for detail is impeccable. I try not to obsess over how my face has changed over the years, but I was getting annoyed with feeling like I needed to add lip liner and brow pencil into my routine in order to fill in the dramatically thinned out tail-end of my brows + my asymmetrical cupid's bow. Jody has been cutting my hair for years, so I knew she would be completely honest about what she felt I needed or didn't need. In our consultation, she expressed that I should focus on filling in and balancing my brows and told me she felt we could wait on my lips unless I was really bothered by the imbalance. Knowing that I can be my own worst critic, it is reassuring to trust a professional help pinpoint when I'm over analyzing my imperfections. I did a 3 session Babe Brows with Jody in 2018 and and followed up with Powder Brows and Lip Blush last fall. She's changed my beauty routine forever and I will never trust my face to anyone else! In fact, prior to the pandemic, I was flying in from Los Angeles to see Jody (and there is no shortage of semi-permanent makeup artists here!) There is a wealth of highly trained talent in the space, not to mention the front of house could not be more lovely and accommodating. All of the stylists are great. If you're looking for natural color or highlights, Herma is excellent. She's an amazing listener, takes her time, and is patient and attentive. This review is long overdue. I got my brows microbladed here October of 2016 and LOVED the result. See the photo attached, I had barely any brows before that were light and crazy looking. Come 1 year and 4 months later and I still have my brows, they're pretty faded at this point but they still look better than my natural brows. Unfortunately I moved from Austin so I can't get them touched up there but highly recommend Swamp Mermaid to anyone living in Austin. The process was no alcohol, caffeine, Tylenol, etc 24 hours before the brow treatment then once I arrived for my appt, I had to let the numbing cream sit for 20 minutes. They knew exactly what to do for my brows and made me look so much better. Yes, your brows will be a lot darker for the second, third and fourth day but they'll fade back to normal. No makeup, sweating or water on the brows for 7-10 days after but it's well worth it. Highly recommend for someone in need of some TLC on their brows! read more
