It's high time for an updated review, as Swedish Motors has gone above and beyond the call of duty and blown me away with one simple thing: honesty. I'll spare you the details, but after a recent fender bender, our body shop tried to take us (and the at-fault driver's insurance company) for a ride. Swedish Motors inspected the vehicles, assessed the damage and then re-examined our car and determined the post-accident cause of computer shut-down. Needless to say, it wasn't from the accident. The body shop had messed up, and Swedish Motors knew it. After the body shop tried and tried again to blame it on the accident, Swedish Motors really went to bat for us and stood firm -- they felt it was only right that the body shop be held responsible for the damages, and would not allow for a false insurance claim. They helped us every step of the way over a month-long period. I was, and still am, totally impressed away by their customer service, compassion and morals. Aside from that saga, this is the only place we take our VW and Saab for mechanical work. They're timely, thorough, and extremely kind. I love that this little family-run business is always bursting at the seams with work, and rightfully so -- I wouldn't trust my cars to anyone else. Swedish Motors 4 Life! read more

Very friendly customer service. Nice owner. I live a mile and a half away. I had to walk to pick up my S60 after I dropped it off that morning for 50,000 mile sievice, and wouind up needing new brakes too. I was running late and called to let them know. They drove down the road and picked me up while I was walking there.. One unfortunate downside -- and I do think this is a downside -- I paid with my Visa bank card (not credit card) but they charge 4% if you pay by any card. I'd have brought by checkbook if I had known that. I wound up costing me $65 more to use my bank card. That's steep when you are getting a full brake job. I could have paid by check just as easy and saved that money. They do have a small sign in the stoe that says that but I honestly didn't see it. Other than that -- I do recommend them. Why can't components fail at good times? That's why there's Swedish Motors - they are ready and able to deal with problems. In this case, the alternator decided to fail. Same day replacement, even if it didn't want to come out. Great job, great attitude, great people. read more

They do some terrific work here and are always friendly and helpful. It's called Swedish Motors which is why i first went with my Volvo but they work on all makes/models. I've never felt pressured into any work and they're always giving sound advice. Years ago they told me the brakes will need to be replaced soon and we've been keeping an eye out on them with every checkup/oil change. They still haven't been changed as they're still fine. That gives me comfort that they're not going to recommend doing work simply to make a few bucks. I couldn't recommend them more! read more

Brought the car in for diagnosis after an overheat on the highway (loss of coolant due to a hose blowing out). They said the engine was "seized" (total BS... I later took the engine apart and while I had warped the head slightly, the rotating assembly did move and the engine could still turn over). They said I needed a new engine (it sounds like they say this to a lot of people). Two months later they told me they found one to buy, then three months later told me they hadn't actually bought it (without calling me to tell me this). Returned maybe 3 calls in all of 6 months - I was calling them every week for a while there. They have a receptionist, but she doesn't answer the phone and when she does she's grumpy always. So, being a Volvo fanatic (this car is my third Volvo, and the sixth in my family) I asked a couple of friends, found a rebuilt '94 B230FT, bought it and brought it to them for the swap. A month later they hadn't even started on the swap - too many "electrical system parts to change over." A month after that, I went in and took my car, my engine, and a bunch of parts that I had bought back from them. These guys can't pick up the phone without being hounded, their technician told me I was wrong repeatedly (and argued with me openly), and nobody was really willing to help. Not to mention the staff has a variety of rather racist stickers around the shop ("Welcome to America, Now speak english!") Fortunately after more than six months they only made me pay for the diagnoses they did in the beginning. STAY AWAY, this shop isn't owned by the lovely Tomasso family any more and leaving the Tomasso sign up is a disgrace to what used to be a wonderful Swedish mechanic. The lot full of cars that never move should be a sign that they're not working fast enough and ripping people off. A good mechanic gets cars in, and gets cars out. Credentials: I took the car and engine and parts home and did the swap myself in my driveway in two weekends, having never done one before on my own. I've worked on these cars most of my life but this was my first engine swap. Saved an estimated $1800 and didn't have to deal with them again. read more

First off they work on all cars which is great. I used to bring my old Jetta here years ago when I lived on the East Side and they were always wonderful. The work was done in a timely manner and always reasonably priced. Now I have a sweet KIA SUV and (knock on wood) haven't had any problems since buying it new in 2004. My check engine light went on recently and I had never gotten it inspected so I figured I should bring it somewhere. Swedish Motors was the first place I thought of. They inspected it and said there were no error codes and that my car was fine. $39 for the inspection and checking the engine light. The last time I took my car to the idiots at the dealership they charged me a $100 diagnostic fee just to plug the car into the computer. Whatever ails your car bring it to these guys and they'll take good care of you. Friendly, honest and reasonable. read more

The best. I have taken my Volvo to many other places and found the prices and service the best at Swedish. They don't pressure you but offer good advice. They are on Mink Road in Seekonk. For those unfortunate souls who happen to own a car in College Hill, Swedish Motors is probably the most convenient option. However, it is a very busy shop, so make sure to schedule an appointment in advance. Service is $65 an hour, just like most mechanics around Providence, and work is top notch. They do specialize in Volvos and Saabs, but do not be afraid of taking other brands here. My 1991 LS400, Leximus Prime, was in need of front struts, an oil change and some interior work, which was performed flawlessly and on time. The professionals were courteous and experienced, and did not hesitate to recommend me OEM alternatives to save money on the parts I needed. read more

After the 2 week wait, which i understand. We left our car and went home. We get a call later. The lady tells us to come get the car and that it has a ton of problems showing up on the computer. We asked for a tune up and an oil change and an inspection sticker. None was done. After the call she told us to come get it and didn't charge us ANYTHING. Hmmm. Later that day I come out and the car has a flat. I took it up the street. No hole in the tire. The stem had been cracked off. I tried to pump it up with our compressor and it just came off. This is a nice Volvo Wagon BTW. So we take it to SteinGold and they call us and ask if someone was working on it because the Turbo Pipe hose (or something) had been crushed by a person. Then I remembered the lady said she had it up on the rack for 3 hours. WHAT MECHANIC DOES 3 HOURS OF ANYTHING AND CHARGES YOU NOTHING? I called and she tried to make me feel like she had done us a solid by not charging us. She did apologize for not doing the oil change and the tune up. Fortunately they told us it didn't need one at Steingold and the error message was an error. So we're picking it up tomorrow. Look on Steingold's page and we'll review there after that. Fingers Crossed. I'd like to thing it's just a mistake but 3 hours work, multiple problems supposedly, no offer to do any work, tires stem just comes off and the next mechanic says that the turbo thing was crushed? This is not a trustworthy shop. They tried asking me to pay 5k to fix my horn... telling me I need to replace my entire airbag and steering wheel assembly... Turns out after going to 2 other mechanics, my problem is just a 'toggle plate'. Less then 150 bucks at most. This was after they failed my state inspection for "bad wipers" when all I had to do was bend my week arm a bit to pass at another location. Do not do business here. read more

I took my Volvo in about three years ago for a noise it was making and they quoted and performed a job for easily over $1000. They also did some other recommended repairs which cost even more (approx.$2300 for everything). When I picked up the car it was still making the noise. I brought the car back to Swedish Motors (SM) and I was told the car now needed a new steering axel component under the car and that that was the source of the noise (even though they supposedly repaired the source of the noise with the first repair). This second job was again going to cost my easily over $1000. I got a second opinion from another shop and they said the noise was obviously coming from the air compressor and showed me the place and the sound. I took my second opinion back to SM to the owner (she is not the receptionist) and the mechanic and they stood by their diagnosis even after I pointed out that I couldn't even confirm that the first repair now was even necessary. So I took the car to the dealer for a third opinion. The dealer said the same thing as the second shop that the noise was clearly the air compressor. The dealer's mechanic looked at the part SM said was faulty and he found nothing wrong with it. I had the dealer call the owner of Swedish Motors. I went back to Swedish Motors and I found the mechanic to be abusive and he still refused to back down on his diagnosis. The owner eventually agreed to put in a used air compressor (that I just had to replace with a new one this year) at no cost but only after I demanded it several times. I have never had a problem with the steering axel piece on the bottom of the car and to this day I don't even know if the original work for over $1000 was even necessary. I would NEVER EVER go back there. They were disrespectful to me and could not admit they made a mistake. read more

Brought in my Volvo XC90 because of a coolant leak.. to make a long story short they tried charging me for 2 hoses when they only replaced one... if I had not of talked to the mechanic myself I would of been charged for 2... also the coolant leak wasn't fixed they misdiagnosed the problem and now I'm out 200 dollars and back at square one... also after the work was done I asked if they had done a pressure test they told me yes... that was obviously a lie because the car leaked litterally the same day I drove it home. After being blatantly lied to, over charged and the problem still not being fixed I won't return, can't trust these people read more

We have been patronizing Swedish Motors for a number of years now for service of our BMW & Mini. They do the work needed, they provide honest advice and do it all at a fair price and with a great attitude. I recently had to bring my car for some emergency work which ended up being much more than anticipated. For other garages it would have been an opportunity to take a vac to my wallet. Not these guys. And that says a lot about their integrity. It's a bonus that they are a 5 minute walk away. It's a great thing to do business with a local business rather than a chain.
