The pastries here are the best on the island and they have a big variety for a small shop! The coffee is great too, obvious by the line every morning. The SERVICE is stellar. I got to Sweet Al's to late one day and walked back to my bike to research an alternative. The owner (based on my best guess) pulled around in her car and offered to grab me something because, in her words, disappointment overtook my face when the door didn't open. To be fair, I was bummed I was late, but it reminded me that businesses and interactions like this is what makes Hilton Head so special. As someone that's not from new Jersey but wishes they were, when I saw there was a New Jersey bakery in Hilton head, I had to come try it. I went in for a donut, walked out of with a cinnamon twist and pop tart along with a donut. Overeating as I always do as places like this. I enjoyed everything, particularly the jelly donut. - Raspberry filled donut was good. - Spinach tomato feta quiche was delicious. My husband liked the sausage something that he got, but over all, it was okay. The pastries at 10am don't taste as fresh as 8am or earlier. The line is crazy long and there are 3-4 people behind the counter working there. I would recommend going earlier for fresher pastries and bigger selection. We did not get everything we wanted and taste today was not up to snuff/previous experiences. My 9yo was excited about the macaroons, but when she got two of them, she tried a little bite of each and didn't like them so she ended up trashing them and was sad. There is no seating inside, but there are some gross sugar covered tables outside that you have to wipe off on your own with your own wipes you hopefully brought since there are no napkins outside. I would only go again if I could go at 8am or earlier. If you're out and about while shopping (stores open at 10am) it's not worth it. read more

I stopped by here early during an early morning walk. I was surprised to see a line which let me know it's a local favorite. I was happy to see a variety of gluten-free options along with other treats and sandwich options. I ordered the gluten-free pumpkin bread with a dry cappuccino. Went around 9:30 am on a Monday and there was about a 10 minute wait out the door since the building is so small. I got the banana pudding donut which was a good size but I would give it like a 4/5 because it didn't have any real banana in it. It was a donut with cream on top and the like banana pudding you make from a packet for the filling with a soggy Nila wafer to garnish. And it was good but it really needed some fresh banana or something to cut through the heaviness because the cream on top wasn't the light kind either it was heavy too. $3 for the donut so definitely on the pricier side for donuts but cheap compared to other sweet treats in Coligny. Next time I would try one of their pop tarts those looked really good or the coconut long John. read more

I've visited Hilton Head Island many times over the last decade, and we almost always stay at the SeaCrest across the street - but I had never tried Sweet Al's Cafe. Figured it was time to give it a shot, as there is always a line outside the door. Arrived around 8:00 a.m. A really nice selection of baked goods behind the glass. Line wasn't long at that time either. I agree with previous reviews that the baked goods are tasty. I loved the long john and the kids enjoyed the donuts. The bacon, egg and cheese croissant was just okay. The bacon was really chewy - not sure why. The coffee was just okay too. I just ordered drip coffee - perhaps the espresso beverages are better? Overall, glad that we tried it. The best part of our time there was when some of the worker's children or family members came in and ran behind the counter to give hugs - that was great. read more

Been coming to HHI long enough to remember (and miss) Java Joe's at the Coligny circle. Luckily, Sweet Al left the cold weather of New Jersey to set up shop on HHI within walking distance of my rental and the circle. I'm not a coffee drinker, so if you can make me a tea latte or hot chai worthy of the name, I'll be your friend for life. Today was my first visit and the chai latte was hot and delicious, a bit clove/cardamom-forward, and it was not sickeningly sweet--I was also able to have it made with oat milk (they also offer almond & soy) which means I can take one less Lactaid today! The pastry case was filled with donuts, scones, muffins, cakes, quiche, etc. I settled on a sour cream donut and it was delicious and enough to hit the spot. My friend had a cafe latte and reported it was one of the few made correctly; she'd overheard Al discussing upgrading his coffee machines with one of those Nespresso-type button ones--DO NOT DO THIS! Those machines cannot make a proper cup of coffee! Hail to the skill of the barista, Al! The outdoor seating area was lovely and lends itself to talking to other vacationers who stop by for a quick breakfast; we chatted up a Michigan dad and his adorable son--Big Al's has a friendly vibe and check it out vs. hitting the franchise coffee shops or higher-priced patisseries. read more

First trip to Sweet Al's was pretty good. Got the Blueberry Muffin. It was nice and moist. While I was waiting on my order I saw them making Croissants and they looked delicious. So, I decided to make a return visit. We got the Bacon, Cheese and Egg Croissant. The bacon was raw! Inedible! We also got the Sausage Cheese and Egg Croissant. The sausage was barely done as well! Made a quick stop at sweet Al's on my way home from the beach and I truly regret not going more while I was there. I had one of the summer specials a sea turtle iced mocha and a strawberry and cheese croissant. Everything was delicious. I got there around 9am and there was a little wait because it's so popular but the line moved quickly and once inside the service was amazing. They were friendly and very much so a well oiled machine as this is an in and out kind of establishment. The seating is outside and they have decorated it nicely . I was soooo excited about this cafe. Turned out to be an utter disappointment. We got 2 donuts, and an egg n cheese croissant for breakfast yesterday. This bakery has changed hands multiple times in the years I've been coming to Hilton Head. I decided to stop one morning and get some coffee and a muffin. I know prices have increased but this place was quite expensive for a bakery. I ordered a black coffee, a protein ball which was $3.50 and a muffin which was $4.50. I thought the quality was just OK and definitely too expensive for what you get. When this bakery was Coligny bakery I felt that the quality was much better. I don't think I will stop here in the future. They've got a great location right by the beach and the staff is friendly but the quality and prices were just not good enough for me. read more

"Small, but mighty" should be the motto of this place. I was simply looking for a HH spot to get locally roasted coffee. Instead I found a vault of coffee/espresso based drinks and pastries (included house made doughnuts!). This tiny building (possibly a portable shed?) holds aromas of fresh baked goodness and lattes and Americano's within its four walls. You need a sweet or savory snack? They got you. You need breakfast or lunch? They got you. You need to wake up, wind down, or are unsure what you really want? Yep, they got you. Such a friendly team here. And the coffee they serve, they have in bags as well. I bought two. Honesty I am intentional about visiting new spots each time I am in Hilton Head, but this is one spot I will be visiting every time I'm there. I hope you do the same. read more

Very cute pastry shop. Wish I'd had a chance to try the coffee, it smelled so good. My fault, I didn't know where we were going and had two cups before we left. I loved the spinach feta croissant. It was delicious. Donuts and cinnamon roll were good too according to my daughter. That cinnamon roll was huge. She got two meals out of it lol. I visited Hilton Head this past March for my birthday and decided to give this place a try. I am now visiting again in July and I haven't been back to this place since that first interaction. I'm writing a review now because I can't help but think of how awful that place really was. The staff was so rude with immediately asking what do you want in a rude tone. Coffee is above average . The pop tart pastry excellent . I would give 4 stars , but for the fact that the hash brown side was the tiniest crumbled up portion I have ever seen . Thinking it was an obvious mistake , I showed the crumbled up side to the server, who scoffed at my inquiry , and said that was a correct order size .
