I'm 55 yrs old. Never made a complaint in my life about any food I've ever eaten out at. Paid my $50 and 5 tip and left. The 3 of us all had chicken fried rice. How can you mess that up ? At best... we all ate 4 or 5 bites. Absolutely disgusting. Most people would not have even paid for that food. We are just not like that. Waiter was oblivious. Clearly none of us ate our food, paid and left. The plate / food, at the very best, was only room temperature. The chicken was gross. Rubbery, like it was from 2 days ago. Or it was not even real chicken. Hard to say. I suspect it was old. In my 55 years of life, this is the worst food I've have ever ever ever eaten in my life. Hands down. Should have known when we walked in on a Saturday night. 5 pm. And it was dead. And no staff we seen were Asian. That's always another "tell". One guy in his 70's was there waiting on his to go order. This is NOT a restaurant. It more like a to go order place with a couple of tables. The good reviews MUST BE FAMILY MEMBERS OR FRIENDS. Looks like all of the great reviews were from YEARS AGO. Maybe new cooks or new owner. The bad reviews all tell the truth. It was gross !!! Place looked clean inside. Food was VERY DISGUSTING. No possible way anyone could think that food is good. I've had lots of bad food or mediocre food. I've always eaten it. Even if cold. This food was NOT editable. It was absolutely gross. So sad. When 3 adults all eat 3 or 4 bites.... You know it's gotta be super bad !!! Waited for the wife to drink her Pepsi.... Paid and left. I asked how spicy is the Thai rice. No spice at all he says. What ? This is a Thai restaurant right ? How does it have no spice to it. Thai food is HOT. He brought some "spice" out with the food in a small bowl. My 2 yr old granddaughter could have taken a spoon full of it. He must have brought something else out ??? No way that was spice. Reddish color. But not a drop of "hotness" to it. Zero !!! I was literally shocked at how bad it was. I don't understand how you can mess up chicken fried rice. Then for the 18-20 yr old waiter to be completely oblivious that your 3 customers didn't even eat their food. Helloooooo. I'm glad my two adult daughters were not there. Absolutely lovely service!! Cozy ambience. Our waitress recommended her favorite skin-less dumplings (triangle-shaped, veggie-stuffed), which was delicious! Egg rolls were good too. I liked that they brought the cider out in a mug so cold the cider started crystallizing. Unfortunately the tofu drunken noodles were not it... very soggy, flavor profile was not quite right. For that reason alone I'm docking the points. I would still come again if I was ever in the area tho! I would just not order that. read more

I've eaten a lot of Thai over the years in NYC, LA and elsewhere. Hands down this is one of the worst Thai restaurants I've been to period. (I don't like to write bad reviews but shaking my head in amazement at this place.) $45 dollars in total for som tum salad (not really som tum see below), green curry with shrimp and pad prik king with chicken. Portions so small couldn't feed two people. Plus one beer ($5, best thing about this place served with a chilled beer mug). Extra charge on the menu for rice (I still don't know what they charge. it's a secret they don't tell you ahead of time. And they don't give you an itemized receipt.). See my pic of the menu. At bottom hand written it says "For every dish that comes with rice you will be charged." Um, could they just say how much it is maybe? This place is just -- WEIRD!! First, we encountered what seems to be a young (under 18?) kid who dodges any questions about the menu. You have to order at window then sit down and he brings the very small portions to you. Did I mention prices are higher than where I live in Manhattan yet portions are smaller!? We had the Pad Prik King which is supposed to be made with firm, dried green bean but they appeared to be frozen green beans chopped into small pieces and over cooked. Sauce was passable, but watery. We ordered the Som Tom salad. I asked the kid if it had green papaya. He acted like I was from Mars. Yes google it, it's supposed to have green papaya, that's what Som Tom is. But the salad we got had NO GREEN PAPAYA. The dressing seemed right, but without the papaya, it was just a small pile of tomato, cabbage and carrots. Not enough to share between 2 people. Of everything the green curry with shrimp was alright, but tiny. And in both cases the rice was extra. Supposedly due to rice prices going up, they have to charge separately for rice. My husband and I were thinking, how much could it have gone up? 25 cents? I mean they must buy it in bulk right?! BOTTOM LINE. This place is bizarre and overpriced. I hate to say bad things about a place. I wish they would get their act together and treat their patrons with respect. read more

What a great find! We are from CA and stopped here though it looked like a take- out place, which it also does. There was plenty of seating. We were passing through Liberty NY on the way to SUNY Binghamton, and stopped here for dinner. A funky little out of the way joint down a side street, the Thai food is the REAL DEAL! Absolutely delicious and genuine. Penang Chicken Curry had real Kaffir Lime leaves and was perfectly cooked and piping hot. The Beef Pad Thai was excellent, as was everything else we had. The food here is good, I genuinely really enjoy coming here for a treat for myself because even though it's a bit on the higher price side, I like it! Today however the amount I was charged was baffling. I got a Thai fried rice, a red curry (both with tofu) and a coffee. Right on the menu it says that both of the dishes are about $11 - so I'm looking to pay around $25 my head with tax and coffee which is fine. I look at my bank statements and it's $35.50? There are signs everywhere that say rice is extra. Okay maybe $2 extra for the rice with the curry that would still be about $27 but where did the extra $8 come from? If they're charging for the rice inside of the fried rice separate I'm very confused because the entire dish is rice so what is the $11 for?? And even if that's the case there's still a missing $6 out of nowhere. So assuming that they charged the rest of the amount for rice alone I'm paying $10 for maybe a cup of cooked rice for one dish and for the second, for rice that's the majority portion of the second meal..? Also the portion of the curry was very small so it doesn't even justify! I wish I had a photo but I'm writing this a few hours later as I've seen the charge come in and I'm really disappointed. It was in one of those silver aluminum 8 inch round take aways and the curry genuinely didn't even hit the 1/3 mark of filling the thing. read more

My family and I have been ordering from here for quite some time. We always loved the food and service, we still do enjoy the food but today we ordered two pad Thais and order of spring rolls. To my surprise we were charged 35 bucks for 3 spring rolls and 2 small servings of the pad Thais. I mean I get places are struggling and you need to find ways to make up the losses but the two main reasons we always came here was 1- prices were always fair and 2- you always got plenty for what you paid for. And to top it we were charged 5 extra dollars for us to pick it up and was even asked to tip on top of it all. I don't know what made them change but they lost a loyal customer today! read more

A gem in the middle of nowhere. The good news is that everything here is great; the bad news is that many of the dishes are very similar. We had a group of eight and asked the server to order for us. We had: Pad see ew Pad Thai Thai fried rice Pad woosen glass noodles All good but similar. I would order a more varied set of selections next time. And by the way, "pad" means stir fry. We started with spring roll, one fresh, one Thai spring roll. Very fresh and flavorful. Not greasy. Leave room for the housemade desserts which were both amazing. We have the mango sticky rice -- a must-have, in my opinion -- and the homemade coconut ice cream, The service was gracious and pretty fast (though we were the only people there in the middle of the afternoon and there was just one person running the place, so our experience may not be representative). From someone who loves Thai food, Sweet Basil by far the best I have ever had in my life, no joke. And they're in Liberty??? Soooo random, and not expected, but nevertheless, remarkable. After our meal, I took time to speak to the sweet little woman who cooks all of the food. She is authentically from Thailand! She makes all dishes and sauces from scratch. Just a simple dish like the Pad Thai is so so delicious. Worth every single penny if you ask me, even if these other reviewers say the positions are small. I think they're more than fair! Better Thai than I've been able to find in Montclair/NYC. Great service, amazingly flavored food in good portions. A lot of Thai places seem to add heat and call it flavor. They did a great job here where every bite of every dish was delightfully flavorful. And the coconut ice cream was insanely good. Will definitely try to be back when in the area. Well, I returned to Sweet Basil. After all, it is the only Thai Restaurant in the area. The owner and chef really is sweet. The food was ok. Again, however, I take issue with the service and filling my order. I was on a short lunch break, so I called ahead to have the food ready to eat in the restaurant when I arrived. I asked for Chicken Pad See Ew and wanted it without broccoli and with bell peppers and bamboo shoots instead. I often get this dish exactly like this in many Thai Restaurants. Well, the dish arrived without the bell peppers or bamboo shoots. I also had a hard time finding any chicken in the dish. If you go to Soy in Monticello, you get amazing dishes with tons of succulent chicken (at a better price). Since I was on a short lunch break, I didn't say anything as I did not have time to wait on a new dish. I really don't feel that this is too much to ask. Please get the order correct and actually include some chicken in the dish. This should not be hard especially since the rent in Liberty has to be considerably less than a place like Monticello as the Town of Liberty is mostly a barren wasteland. The other issue I have with the restaurant is they always seem to be closing for long stretches of time - like a few weeks at a time. So, make sure the restaurant is not closed before you make the trip. read more
