On the drive home from Binghamton University, I had a craving for ribs. Although I was thinking BBQ ribs ... I had to "settle" for slow cooked braised ribs and boy, am I glad I did! Ambience - this is a house converted to a restaurant. The dining room felt like we were having a dinner party at a friend's house and they needed to set up some extra tables and chairs. Food - I ordered the braised ribs with fried rice. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and had the right amount of sauce. It was served with fried rice that was a good starch to go with the protein. 4/5 TL/DR - if you are also traveling back to NYC from Binghamton and your stomach is saying "feed me some ribs...". What a gem! We were looking for a place to get lunch and possibly dinner, and this restaurant fit the bill in all regards. The portions were SO generous for the price, we had more than enough leftovers for dinner after eating lunch at one of the outdoor tables. The menu selection is huge, and the quality was fantastic. Seriously so many veggies, meat, etc. I don't know where I've ever gotten better quality and value for the price. The Korean ribs were amazing and fried rice was so good and filling. I only wish I was in town longer to try more dishes--there were at least a dozen things on the menu I wanted to try! And it's obvious so many people love this place because their lunch takeout business was truly hopping the entire time we were there, with all orders coming out promptly--people were just in and out with multiple orders. Found this place on Yelp when driving through the area after a short camping trip. This place is a little oasis... My wife and I both ordered the bibimbap - I had beef, and she foolishly had the tofu. Both were great, nicely served, quickly delivered to the table. Welcome to the town of Monticello! Sleepy and quiet town, but found this restaurant/deli eatery serving up Korean fusion good eats to locals and tourists (us). Although most of the shops have shuttered, perhaps due to slow or lack of business; Salt & Pepper has lots of traffic. Grab dinner between 5pm - 6pm, otherwise wait or order out. Salt & Pepper is a good 10 min drive from the waterpark where we were staying for a mini-vaca. Seating inside with a few tables, and a few outdoor tables, clean bathroom and mild-service (sometimes with a side of tude!) but the owners are legit Korean "Ahjumma" and "Ahjussi" cooking up some yummy eats. Most platters are about $12 - $14 a plate but portion is again, huge! Give a tip at the cashier, it's not part of the bill and be generous! We ate here back to back, 2 nights in a row. Their portions are huge, we usually can't finish our food and we always left feeling stuffed (a little over stuffed...). What stood out: their fried rice that comes with the meal! The japchae deluxe with bulgogi is delicious! The pork ribs is tender and the pork pan fried dumplings is a must get! Bulgogi is better than chicken, pork is also well seasoned. Don't sleep on the pancake! So-so: We also tried their bibimbap (OK - if you like the deli style ones with salad instead of the traditional ones with stir fry veggies) and udon with seaweed broth (not for everyone). Overall, would definitely return if we ever end up in the Catskills again. read more

But the food is the reason to come here. The bibimbap was terrific but the real star for us was the noodles, which we had with beef bulgogi. Chewy rice noodles that reminded me of pad thai. For years, I've been trying to come here when I'm in town, but since they're not open on weekends, I was often out of luck. So this week, I promised myself that, no matter what, I'd get lunch there. And now I've followed through in that promise. Walking in around noon, for some reason, I expected to see a full breakfast/brunch menu and a glass pastry display. Though I knew it was Japanese/Korean restaurant, from the outside, it always reminded me of a kind of bagel and coffee shop. Nothing about the interior or exterior screams "we served Asian food here" at you. And it's absolutely not necessary. They serve good food, very Korean food, to a steady amount of people who already know what they have to offer. And it seems that the lunch is their bread and butter crowd. I ordered the bulgogi (marinated beef) sandwich on a roll, which came with a pickle, a little bit of macaroni salad, and gojuchang spicy (but not actually spicy) sauce on the side. It came to $6.75 before tax, which is very reasonably priced for the size of the sandwich, etc. that eventually arrived. Around the same as what I used to get at similar spot in northeastern Queens. But on to the taste, of course! This bulgogi doesn't taste like any Korean recipe I've ever tried before... And I actually think it's better! It's marinated more sweetly and is less of the long strips of shredded beef, but more smaller chucks that have a char to them that remind me asado or jerk. Perhaps you can visualize those descriptors and understand my favor. But if you can't, you should just plan to bookmark this spot if ever in the area to try for yourself! Cause as the locals clearly already know given the steady stream of take out and dine in lunch business, Salt & Pepper is where it's at! read more

Bulgogi and the stir fry was great, it was hot and cooked perfectly. There was the perfect amount of sauce on the bulgogi and the combination of the stir fry noodles was great. This place was a saving grace from eating bad pizza, dry burgers and limp fries from the water park for 3 days! A quick 10 min drive from Kartrite water park, it's small and cozy with some seats inside. If you go early enough, at 5pm, you can grab a table without any wait time. Service is a little slow but it's understandable considering this is a mom & pop shop with just the couple doing the cooking with maybe 1-2 hired help. I highly recommend their bulgogi or pork. It's flavorful and not tough or dry. Oh, did I mention these platter comes with a big mound of delicious fried rice? The japchae noodles is also tasty. The pork ribs were amazing! I would skip the chicken, surprisingly a bit dry. Their pancakes are also a must try. I would skip the bibimbop and udons. These tasted more like the kind found in NYC deli/grocery places. I love this place! I was ecstatic to find it a few years ago and I'm happy to say the portions and quality have not changed at all. Generous and delicious, and oh so flavorful. I'm so happy there is a home style legitimate no frills Korean eatery here in Monticello. I'm a creature of habit so I always get the bulgogi platter with fried rice and it is so filling, I usually bring a small portion home with me to eat for lunch the next day. The meat is perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. So much rice to go with the bulgogi & love the fresh broccoli n zucchini. I've also gotten some of the baked breads they sell at the counter which are also delicious: my favorite is the Banana Bread which is moist and full of real banana. Lastly the owners are the nicest people ever! Right now they claim to have no waitstaff but I always see someone hustling around going table to table so please tip the non waiting waiters! read more

Have to update my review since it's been quite a while. Place is still just as good, if not better, then it was when they first opened! The new restaurant is very cute and clean and we LOVE the additional menu options now offered. It is now an even better lunch spot for the locals! We have been trying different things, but my go-to and favorites are the Bulgogi (beef and pork), the Scallion pancakes, Japchae Noodles, and homemade cake or bread for the road! I have been searching, but there is no place in NYC that makes food like they do here at Salt & Pepper. The owners are great, hardworking people and we love to see them do well!
