For our wedding, the cake was included with the venue and they provided 3 bakeries for us to choose from. We were quickly drawn to Sweet Discoveries after seeing photos of her work. Since I have a gluten intolerance, I was worried I wouldn't be able to have any of our wedding cake. Fortunately Cindy was flexible and was able to make a beautiful gluten-free cutting cake to go along with a tower of regular cupcakes for our guests. She was very helpful at our tasting, and even provided gluten free samples for me to try. For our day she was able to bring our cake design to life with a beautifully decorated and delicious (gluten free funfetti with cherry and lime filling) cutting cake and a fun tower of cupcakes (cherry chip, chocolate orange, cherry lime, and strawberry lemon) that everyone enjoyed and raved about. There were none left by the end of the night, so that tells you something! We wish she had a storefront so we could occasionally stop in to pick out a goodie or two, but if we have any custom orders in the future we will definitely work with Sweet Discoveries again! read more

Ignored for the second time! It has been 4 months since we last visited this location. At 5pm on Christmas I received a notice to inform me that the owner had replied to my comment. I was excited to see if any of my concerns were addressed and all I found was a self promoting message. Which leads me back to my original review, when my family was treated rudely and with indifference. Sorry we didn't order a cake that looked like a stadium. I guess if you order a big cake, then you get treated nicely, according to your comments. So a small order customer who walks in the front door doesn't matter. We walk by your location all the time and in 4 months we have not set foot in the door, since we were not treated nicely. Your comments will not have us changing that any time soon. Dreamy frosting on cupcakes- airy, slightly sweet; luscious comes to mind. My husband seems to love the cupcakes themselves. I like them very, very, very, very much- but I'm not in love yet. ;) I'll tell you what I do love, and that, so far, is just about everything else. Wish I was kidding, but their butter and sugar cookies are delicious and about 50 cents a piece. "You know what makes them so good?", the owner asks me..."BUTTER!", she enthusiastically exclaimed. So the secret's out. Ha! The cheesecake cups are decadent, delicious, divine. Probably one of my favorite things there, and a hit with my girlfriends. There were Danishes under the glass one day, a cheese, and a double whammy of apple and cherry, each $1.75. "Those are fresh, just out," she said. Ok, one of each. I intended them for our Sunday breakfast, but since they were so fresh I had to taste when I got home. And then I had to have the husband taste. Perfection. I don't believe they made it past the next few minutes. I tried a rum ball, and made a point of explaining my love for Lovin Oven's perfect rum balls. These were a very close second, but delicious in their own rite. My husband actually prefers the rumballs here as the flavors are not overpowering. And I'd wager most items seem to be easily $1 or so cheaper than other bakeries. I have yet to order a cake, but I'm about to for an upcoming birthday. I'll update you on cost and flavor when I do. I'm hoping to have a good customer service experience. I was worried after reading other reviews, but I'm happy to say that after several visits thus far, the service was friendly, patient and overly accommodating. Perhaps some positive changes have been made? Most of the business seems to be pickup but there is one table to sit at, still it's not the kind of place where you linger. It's not a large bakery, nor are the items extensive, though, the variety in daily cupcake flavors seems to hover around 10-12, and each cupcake runs $2.50. But the items they do offer are done well- fresh and delicious. Cupcakes fare best if eaten same day, and I don't think they use preservatives or artificial ingredients. I was very impressed and pleased to have a sweets connection in my immediate area. I'd usually have to drive much further out of my way for the same quality, and pay more. read more

We used this bakery through our wedding venue and our guests had nothing but good things to say about our cake flavors. We were able to even have three different flavors of cake to choose from. We chose caramel apple, banana foster and almond raspberry. Our tasting was very simple and easy, after selecting them from our choices of bakery from our venue's tasting, we set up an appointment with the owner and went in to try even more samples. I ordered a set of cakes. One pizza styled cake and a Starbucks to go styled cupcake. First of all, they were beautiful. I squealed the whole way home about how great they looked. Secondly, they were delicious! They were a big hit. The woman I emailed with was very nice and helpful and made sure to help me in every way to get this order done the way I wanted. I found Sweet Discoveries while at a bridal show but I didn't need them for my wedding I needed a cake for my mother in laws surprise 50th birthday! My schedule was so busy that I didn't have time to make an appointment so Cindy was great with communicating with me through e-mail. I sent her a picture of what we wanted and told her my budget and she made it happen! The cake was great! She allowed us to pick from any of the flavors but we went traditional and stuck with chocolate and vanilla with buttercream frosting! I cannot believe how well it turned out! We had an "aged to perfection" theme and the cake was decorated perfectly! It included two fondant wine glasses, a fondant wine bottle and even a banner with out theme! Our whole experience with Sweet Discoveries was wonderful. The weekend of our tasting we were asked kindly to come in earlier which was fine. As a thank you a few extra flavors for us to taste were made. That made my fiance at the time, my daughters, and myself feel appreciated just for coming in a little earlier. Then the flavors were amazing and so unique. We tasted some classic wedding cake flavors and some unique ones. The unique ones blew us away and we ended up picking the amazing orange dreamsicle as one of our 2 flavors. Price was great and our cake was delivered no issues and it looked amazing. We loved our experience with Sweet Discoveries! We had a simple wedding and dinner with close family and friends and we came to Luda quite short notice with our request. We already loved the cupcakes - flavors and design - but we also wanted a cake topper. Luda sat down with us and helped us create a simple, elegant design that turned out perfect! She was able to have our cake ready in 1 week, and her team had everything ready for pick-up exactly as planned. We received a great selection of cupcakes, and the topper was beautiful. She also graciously rented a display/stand for us to use at our dinner (they are normally purchased) - this was a nice touch to show off the cupcakes. Prices in our opinion are competitive if not exceptional. The cupcakes aren't huge, but the quality in baking and design is fantastic. Can't tell you my disappointment when I went there to pick up the cake and no cake -- funny how during my initial consult owner told me of a situation she had similar to mine, maybe I should have been warned then. Sweet Discoveries is a very nice bakery with higher end pastries. The pastries are extremely tasty and the service was good. Workers seem to have great knowledge about the many different flavor offerings that they have. The owner, Luda, cake designs are the best I've ever seen. I had a pretzel (caramel?) cupcake. It was to die for! It's a nice size cupcake and cost me $2.50, which is fair. This is no chain-store or typical home made cupcake. You can tell it is professionally prepared. The lady was very nice (she was the baker). I was disappointed to read some of the other reviews about poor customer service. I read the other two reviews before writing this so I'd like to acknowledge the fact that I've never had to deal with the staff on personal business. My conversation with the employee was about her recommendation on which cupcakes to get for my soon-to-be mother-in-law, and she ended up loving the cupcake! So I'm basing my review on the quality of the cupcakes. The cupcakes are amazing! And as Anthony mentioned, they are a steal ($2.50 is nothing compared to what other bakeries charge). I've also seen pictures of cakes they've made for kids birthdays, weddings, events, etc. and they are amazing and I'm not an easy one to impress. Although we still have time to choose, I think me and my fiance will be using Sweet Discoveries for our wedding cake. (Maybe I'll do a follow-up review later). read more

Luda created a castle cake for my daughters sweet 16 party. This cake was bigger and better than anything cake boss could create. With flavors such as Red Velvet, Chocolate Chip and Strawberry Banana, the line for the cake was never ending. We live in Waukegan but we visit Sweet Discoveries at least once a month, just because we can't get enough of their treats. The staff is friendly, you are treated like family.
