The friendly guy at the counter said that they are changing their name as per the new storefront sign. This is a casual Mexican bakery with great prices. Loved all food items that I chose & I didn't chose his recommendations so those might even be better. He recommended items with ginger, coconut & traditional delights. We also did not warm up the pastries so that is how delicious the bakery items were Everything was so fresh tasting & hit the spot. I appreciate that things were not overly sweet. My family and I have always used LaLuz Bakery for our birthday cakes and have never had an issue before. That's why we didn't hesitate to order a special two-tier TikTok-themed cake for my niece's birthday on Saturday. Unfortunately, this time was very different. After picking up the cake and heading to the party, we discovered that the cake had completely caved in. The top tier slid off the bottom tier before we even opened the box. I took pictures immediately and contacted the bakery right away. I didn't ask for a refund--I simply asked if there was anything they could do to make it right. Instead, I was told that because the cake had left the store, there was nothing they could do. I even offered to return the damaged cake. Still, the manager on duty, Mario, said he couldn't help and would pass it on to his supervisor. We left the cake with them and walked out empty-handed--no replacement, no apology, no effort to resolve the issue. We ended up going to Sam's club buying two cakes($50 total with tax), and creatively combining them to save the party. Honestly, those cakes turned out better than what we originally purchased for $150.00 from La Luz This experience was really disappointing, especially considering the loyalty and money we've given LaLuz over the years. I'm leaving this review to let others know that if something goes wrong, you may not receive the customer service you'd expect--or deserve. Needless to say, we will be taking our business elsewhere. I feel like it was hard to review this place. I had read so many great reviews that maybe I went in with too high of expectations. To start, there were way more bakery items here than I expected! It was pretty overwhelming, making it difficult to decide what to get (and to figure out what is good). I picked up a variety of different treats: tres leches cake, flan, churros, concha bread, and rice pudding empanada. The results were mixed. As everyone has said, the tres leches cake is superb and is probably the highlight of what they make at this bakery. The other standout was the rice pudding empanada. There are no signs that say what the different pastries are so we picked it out and took a chance. It ended up being a pleasant surprise. Just perfectly sweet. But, it would be nice if they could put up signs so customers can decide what they want without having to ask staff. The churros were pretty hard and stale by the time we got them in the middle of the day. Perhaps they taste better when they are fresh. Otherwise, would not recommend. The concha bread was huge and super soft! But overall, the flavor was light and was not as sweet as I would have liked. The flan I did not mind, but my family thought it was way too firm. Very friendly staff members. Love their tres leches cakes. The cakes are so yummy, fresh and rich and melts in your mouth. They have fresh breads and donuts which are made everyday and they all taste so good. I have tried almost all breads and all are good. They make wedding cakes as well which you can order. They have a wide range of yummy treats and have much later hours than your typical bakery. Everything was well labeled so you knew exactly what everything was while looking around. It would be nice if they also had the prices on the description so you know upfront what you are paying. My favorite treat was the chocolate candy sugar cookie. Customers can load up their own tray and then bring it to the register to be bagged up and pay. I would definitely stop by again to try more of their treats! read more

Wow, an amazing selection of cakes, tarts, pastries, and other sweets here presented in a very nice and attractive manner here in beautiful display cases. Browsing through the selection is a joy as the layout of the bakery makes it easy to walk around and check the different options and the air conditioning is turned on to a pleasantly cool temperature. Variety and cheap prices make this an instant draw for anyone living in the area and looking for Mexican pastries. This is made fresh throughout the day for maximum quality. One drawback is the lack of labeling for different items, but this isn't too difficult to figure out from the little differences in decorations or ingredients on each pastry. Surprisingly, one of the best items I tried here was the cake donut. The cake donut is very soft and moist, full of flavor. The yeast donut is huge, though a bit on the dry side. The cakes are extremely moist, with a nice density to them. The sugar cookies are nice and crisp, with a slightly fluffy and firm dough. I really enjoyed the cinnamon cookie, which had a nice strong earthy flavor and was similar to a biscotti. The apricot pastry had a nice filling, almost like a jam although it wasn't too crispy. The milk bread had a nice light sweet milk flavor, and a pleasant texture. Overall, a nice place to get a wide variety of pastries. Good given the price, though many different items were pretty similar in flavor and overall "soft" was a common texture between most items I tried. Still, I enjoyed the items I tried. read more

I have a very conflicting review. I would have to give the deliciousness on their cakes a 10/10. Their tres leches is what they are known for and make the best in the area. I have had many of their cakes, and they have all been very delightful and the right amount of sweet, which is dangerous because you can finish a whole cake in one sitting if you ask me. I have ordered cakes for over 5+ years and it seems like the service has gone down. The staff has been accommodating every single time but my most recent experience disappointed me greatly. I will have to say that out of the 30 times we have ordered here, they have made mistakes only a handful of the times, but didn't seem to be accommodating my most recent experience. You'll be able to see the difference between a good product versus a product that looked like it was decorated by a child. I was very upset as it was my dad's 51st birthday and the cake didn't look to appealing. I've been a loyal customer for many years. I would have given the service a 3 star and the food a 5 start without a doubt. With the recent cake, I would say i'd give them a 2 stars. read more

The conchas is what brought me here all the way from midway airport area in Chicago. Someone from work brought conchas from this place and they have been the best conchas I've tasted thus far. The bread feels very soft textured and fine. It is not too sweet but just right. I grew up and still live in a Mexican Chicago neighborhood. I'm so glad I found this place. It'll be my favorite for conchas from now on! The place overall is small and They don't have as much bread variety as mexican bakeries in Chicago, but for a suburb, I think it's not bad. I tried bits of their other bread like the horn one (cuernitos) and empanada de camote. I can't wait to try their tres leches cakes later in the year. (I cut up the bread into pieces when I got home. After moving from LA, where I frequented the same panadería since I was a little girl, I was thrilled to find La Luz so close to my new home. Walking in smells heavenly, and they have hand sanitizer as soon as you enter. The bolillo is perfectly soft and has a great flavor and texture. They have a wide range of pan dulce, each more mouth watering than the next. The tamales can be ordered ahead of time, even if it is a small order! The guy working the cash register is always pleasant and everyone greets you when you walk in. Personally, the tamales de carne roja were my favorite. I felt the tamales de raja were more masa than queso, but I would probably get them again if I really wanted some. Good churros are hard to find. Fantastic churros, even harder. Until now that is. Cookies, churros, tres leches, flan, chocolate covered strawberries, custom cakes, pan dulce...oh my! Did I mention churros yet? I took the day off and visited my mom in the suburbs, aka Mundelein. There are several panaderias nearby and I've been to some of them but it was nothing I felt I needed to Yelp about. The first time my mom and I drove past here it wasn't open yet, but it had promise so we knew we had to swing by eventually. Ladies and gents, that day was today. Oh. Sweet. Heaven. Haaaaaaallelujah! Let me tell you, I just inhaled my churro and want to cry it was so good. It's what every churro should taste like, sweet and sugary, doughy perfection... zzzzzzzomg. They had cabinet upon cabinet of sweet, sugary goodness. Pan dulces in every shape, form and flavor, sugar cookies in all sizes, brownies, cakes, ugh just think of everything that can be baked....it's all here, I promise you that. I had three paper bags FULL of sweets, some for me, some for work (because sharing is caring) and some for my mom, literally, the platter I had was covered in sweets---and our grand total was only $14. They were really friendly when bagging my goodies (I don't like cookies and pastries in the same bag) and yeah, probably THE BEST panaderia y pasteleria I've ever been too, and that's including the city. The bad news, everything fell kinda short for me...the cheesecake was not what you'd expect, hard to explain but no cream cheese flavor! Looked beautiful though... the glazed/shiny donut looking bear claw was only so so, and the sugar cookie was crumbly with no flavor. The little bread looking things with colored tops were not for me either. I just wouldn't go back. Had the same experience with the bakeries in China town.
