Sweet Maple is a fantastic breakfast spot in Little Italy! It's not a trendy brunch place, but just good, old-fashioned breakfast. Their menu is just the right size. Not pages and pages, but there is a little bit of everything - omelettes, scrambles, home fries, pancakes, and more. I don't normally order pancakes at restaurants, but they are so fluffy and decadent at Sweet Maple. I highly recommend. The home fries are also great, and you can get them with a variety of different toppings. A lot of the entrees come with your choice of toast or biscuit - get the biscuit! They are homemade, using the owner's family recipe. If you come on the weekend, be warned that there will most certainly be a wait. But it will be worth it, so don't despair! read more

I was really excited to finally try Sweet Maple Cafe, but I was less than thrilled with my experience. When I came inside it was very crowded and I got a seat within a few minutes, which was great. Didn't have to wait long. When I was finally ready to order, I told the waitress that I wanted a fresh squeezed orange juice, and she replied with, "It comes from a box, actually. It's definitely not fresh squeezed." Wow. That's really great marketing right there. 1) If you're going to list fresh squeezed juice on your menu, make sure it's fresh squeezed. 2) If it's NOT fresh squeezed juice, don't tell your customers its not. Strike one. Then I got two eggs over easy with toast and a single pumpkin pancake. Nothing stood out about the food, and the bread probably had the same nutritional value as toilet paper. I can't believe I've never written a review for Sweet Maples! I've been eating breakfast here for over 5 years! I've been a very bad girl! Ok so here is the low low. You gotta try the Monterey home fries. Red skinned potatoes, crumbled bacon, onion, herbs and Monterey jack cheese all piled together on a plate. Great French toast and the best blueberry pancakes ever are must tries. I love the Taylor street omelette( I eat this one with 3 egg whites/ 1 yolk) and the breakfadt sandwiches are awesome! Everyone loves her biscuits but I'm not really a biscuit fan. All I have to say is yes! I enjoyed everything! I had breakfast for the first time at Sweet Maple Cafe and loved it. We were a party of 4, everyone ordered something different so we could each have a little taste. I ordered the corn beef hash, eggs over easy, and (to my surprise) one really huge biscuit. My eggs were perfect and my biscuit was extra fluffy. I also tasted the liver and onions, the salmon cakes and lemon/raspberry pancakes, which were both specials for today. Omg! The liver and onions is the best I've ever had dining out. Definitely what I'll be ordering for myself when I return. The salmon cakes, as well as the pancakes were awesome. Overall I had a really great experience. No complaints. The service was great, everyone was so attentive. I just loved the whole feel of the restaurant. The sign outside is cute and welcoming. The interior is warm and cozy...made me feel so comfortable. And I really enjoyed seeing the portraits hanging throughout the dining area. All of these things made my dining experience very special. I judge my breakfast haunts by the french toast and the french toast here was quite disappointing, The description on the menu states it's thick slices of challah bread when in reality it's regular modern white bread! Was headed to the Lagunitas Brewery with a friend on Friday and stopped in at Sweet Maple on Taylor street for some brunch. This place isn't very big, but has a lot of that old-school charm to it. We got a table after about a 5 minute wait. I imagine it gets very crowded on the weekends. Their menu has a nice mix of sweet and savory options as well as lunch fare. Be sure to check the board for daily specials and fresh bakery items too! My friend got the 18th street scramble and I went with the special of the day, cinnamon roll pancakes. They tasted great (hard to screw up cinnamon roll pancakes am I right?) and were super filling. I recommend putting a little butter on it to soften the texture up. On par with that old school charm I mentioned, prices are VERY reasonable. Our total including tip was $32. This place was super cute. I'm sure the outdoor seating situation is only because of Covid but it was definitely a bit confusing at first. When you get there you order at one window, and can pick up at the same window or a second window. We came for a late breakfast/early brunch. Around 11 AM, it was slightly busy and we had to wait for seating to become available. We went ahead and placed our order at the window and prepared to stay and wait for an available table.Because of the outdoor seating you have to literally wait for someone to finish before you can sit down if there are no available seats. We stood there for about 10 minutes before someone got up that would allow us to be seated. It was kind of confusing because there was no official waiting area we were just kind of standing around waiting for a table to become available. Once seated all was well. The food was ready in a decent amount of time and was very hot. Presentation was great and the food tasted amazing. They give you more than enough as a serving. The owner came out and made sure everyone was taken care of and everyone had food that was to their satisfaction. She was very friendly and personable. 3.5 stars What I really enjoy is the small old school diner feel when you walk in. It's a little funny cause your sort of on display. The hostess/cashier stand is in the back but all the tables face the door when you walk in. I went with a group of friends yesterday for lunch. My boy got the fish special that he's got before and always enjoyed. My girl got the egg and cheese sandwich which she said was good and filling. I opted for the 18th street omelette. The omelette itself I didn't care for that much (I've had better chorizo omelets) but I did enjoy the potatoes and of course the biscuit (melts in your mouth) you get on the side. Okay this place is very sweet. The atmosphere of the establishment is quite inviting, plus the decoration gives out the feeling of sitting at your grandparents' house waiting for a hot meal to come out of the kitchen. Good vibe. The place does get packed but they have a few plastic chairs for people to wait outside if they have to. It's worth the wait though. The service is amazing, 6 out of 5 stars there. Both our host and server were very attentive and answered all our questions. The food -and this is where the bubble gets burst- was above average but not amazing in lieu of the other aspects. For the meal itself, I had the Holiday French Toast with a side of biscuits with their spicy sausage and gravy. Here is where it gets tricky. Making french toasts is an art, because there's more to it than what meets the eye. Sure the ingredients are all simple but it is the style and the perfect touch of the chef that makes it either perfect or a complete fiasco. There are not many places out there that I believed have mastered the french toast technique, but, Sweet Maple Cafe makes the cut. Boy their french toasts are great! Totally approve, and recommend. Now, what bothers me is that the biscuits with sausage and gravy were just okay, they weren't particularly good, which is surprising considering they are remarkably easy to get right once the french toast technique has been mastered, but this was just a disappointment. Avoid this as a side... On another bright side, I got their chocolate milk, which was delicious, and my friend ordered their blueberry pancakes which were both filling and yummy. I would actually give this place 2.5 stars if I could. I came here last Saturday for brunch. Originally, I wanted to go to Nightwood, but discovered that they only do brunch on Sundays. We were able to walk right in, but the place was crowded. As soon as we sat down, a line formed that was out the door by the time we were finished. The decor hasn't been updated (ever), and there's no ambiance at all. First- any good brunch place has to have good coffee. Why would any restaurant serve Seattle's Best, especially in Chicago, where there are so many better options?! Gross. I didn't have an issue with the cup, but I'm a small woman. My fiance and his cousin both had issues holding the coffee cup, as it's shaped like a tea cup, and the handle is quite small! Since the place has a variety of southern foods, I decided to try the biscuits and gravy and a side of breakfast potatoes with cheese, jalapenos, and bacon. The biscuit itself was good, but it was so sweet, it tasted strange with the sausage gravy (which was also pretty tepid). The potatoes were much better, but almost anything tastes delicious with melted cheese and bacon. My fiance got a sausage breakfast sandwich, and he liked it. However, the only side option was applesauce- it would be nice to have the option to get potatoes or anything else. His cousin got a sampler plate, which I think is the way to go here. At the suggest of a friend who is pretty good about making food suggestions, we went to Sweet Maple for breakfast and enjoyed it immensely! We were warned that it's small and gets crowded fast, so we anticipated a wait when we got there. Found a parking spot right out front and had no wait when we got there at 8.30! We were shocked and amazed because the place was clearly hopping, but I suppose we lucked out when I looked up to find the size of the line had doubled since being seated. Didn't get any rude impression from the gentleman that seated us, in fact, everyone who worked there had a smile on their face and was clearly attentive to us and everyone around us. The only person that was rude was the woman who barged past me to get into line before me (not knowing that my boyfriend was already inside) and proceeded to let the door shut in my face. I guess I got some sweet justice, because we were almost finished with our DELICIOUS meals as she was just getting seated. Fuckin' bitch, serves her right! We decided to split a raspberry hot chocolate while we waited (not long at ALL) for our meal and it was incredible. I ordered a the Carmen G with Fontina cheese and my boyfriend got the Dr. G. It was to die for and he agreed. There must have been 4 slices worth of bacon in my scramble and there was a nice blend of button and portabello mushrooms (a nice touch, as all button mushrooms in a dish can be a little boring). The roasted red potato home fries were crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and very flavorful. And the biscuits, my GOD, the biscuits!! I have Celiac disease and I'm not supposed to eat them...but God DAMNIT, I had to try one. I only ate half - not too bad. Best biscuit I've ever had and I'm originally from the South. I like mine to be a little firm and crumbly as opposed to overly fluffy and these had the perfect balance and were very moist. For the two of us, the bill came to be about $26 bucks and change. Not bad at all for all of the food we had. Pros: Everything I've talked about, see commentary. Cons: The only thing I can think of is there's a wait (not for us, again, we were lucky) and the only have diet Coke in a can - no refills. I've complained about this before in other reviews, I love me some diet Coke, sue me. If we go back for lunch, I might have to add another star. P.S. Some of you Yelper's need to take those sticks out of your asses and cool your jets with your criticisms on this site (not just this review, all of them). We were seated quickly, and our waitress was really helpful in her suggestion for the Chorrisimo Tacos. There were a ton of great options on the menu. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this establishment. Although I'm not a fan of waiting for a table to open up when it's not Mother's Day, I'm glad I did. My sister and I went on a Thursday late morning/early afternoon for breakfast and we were treated well. We were told the wait was approximately 20-30 minutes. So, we walked around the area and stretched our legs rather than return to the car or perch outside the restaurant on the sidewalk in plastic chairs. Although it is a "cozy" place (code word for small and potentially cramped) the service was excellent! I also like that they don't make you feel like you have to rush to order and eat (although there are obviously others waiting outside for you to finish and get up lol). From the ladies that greeted us and took our name, to the ones that seated and served us...to the gentleman that lifted my son (and daughter) into their high chairs...they were wonderful! The reason I'm only giving it 4 stars, instead of 5, is because the only blip on my culinary radar was the pancakes...and the lack of a children's menu. The syrup was fine, as was the butter and whipped cream (yum). The biscuits were "good" but I'm sure would have been even better if my butter would've melted and they'd been a little more moist. But I set it under my eggs and it melted a bit...added some jam and it was tasty. :) Their prices weren't terribly expensive, but I felt their menu would benefit from smaller meal options for children (or light eaters lol). They did offer to do a half-order of pancakes and something else, but I didn't want them to have a meal of 1 pancake...so we ordered several things and shared. The eggs...scrambles...wonderful! Sweet Maple used to be a solid go to restaurant. However, after today it's questionable. The female African American waitress was very rude and unprofessional. I asked if she could take our order. She ignored me and kept walking. Then I said, "excuse me can you please take our order? " She turned around and said, "that's not my table. " Also, the ham was very dry. I love the biscuits and gravy and the cinnamon roll pancake was probably the best pancake I've ever had. Great place!

We absolutely loved our experience here. We went on a Sunday around 10:30 am. We were seated in about 15 min which was much shorter than anticipated. Our waitress came right over and was great. Our beverages came right out and our food followed soon. We ordered chocolate chip pancakes and the breakfast that included eggs, bacon, cheese grits and a biscuit! Everything was delish.
