I can't recommend Sweet Marie's enough for weddings. I have celiac disease and so my husband and I decided we wanted to go with a completely gluten-free bakery. We were actually planning to use another bakery, but they fell through, and Marie took our order with less than 2 weeks to go until our wedding! We decided on guava cake with coconut filling and vanilla buttercream. She also made us some vegan cupcakes for our dairy allergy and vegan guests. I feel like you can never really trust the flavor of a gluten-free cake (haha), but her cake & cupcakes were truly delicious!! Even my husband loved them, and he's a hard sell on gluten-free baked goods. Marie was so easy to talk to, and was quickly available via call or text if I had questions. Our cake was so beautiful!! She even drove out to our venue (Turtle Bay) to assemble the cake and affix our cake flowers and cake topper. She was just as lovely in person. 5+ stars for Marie and her GF bakery! read more

Today I had the havarti grilled cheese on gluten-free bread (you'd never know...) with a side of fried rice. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious! "Sweet" Marie, the chef, was there herself and she was super friendly, as were the multiple baristas that I encountered (I was there for quite awhile doing some work). Great customer service, great food... and, based on a conversation I happened to overhear, it sounds like Marie is very knowledgeable about celiac disease and other food allergies. This is a gluten free bakery first and foremost, that also has some delicious meal items available. Yes the cost is high, but it's Kauai, the most expensive island in Hawaii, and it's specialty foods, in that sense it's quite reasonable. Delicious muffins and cookies. Marie is quite pleasant, perhaps some of these reviewers are rude people and expect the world to be nice to them. Totally worth a stop if you want some good treats, but it's a necessity if you need gluten free items and you're on Kauai! read more

So this review is actually for 'Not Just Desserts' in the Waikiki Specialty Farmer's Market by President Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. We walked near there, looking for Sweet Marie's but couldn't find it. I'm so glad we stopped by this booth at the market though, because all the desserts were gluten free and AMAZING. We're talking: brownies, lemon bars, matcha/pandan bread, other breads filled with cream or cheese/meat, spinach/mozzarella pastry, raspberry pie, cheesecake, loaves of bread-- and you wouldn't know it was GF if someone didn't tell you. That's how delicious her food is. The incredibly friendly and knowledgeable baker shared that she uses all natural ingredients, doesn't use preservatives, and even ships her goods to the mainland (the baked goods are easily frozen for transport). She comes on Saturday mornings for the market to help out, as the proceeds go to the elementary school. Not sure when it opens, but we went around 10 am and she said she'd be there until 1pm. So if you happen to be in the area around that time, be sure to come find her booth-- definitely one of the highlights of our trip! read more

Love Sweet Marie! Marie is a sweet and lovely lady. My bf and I stopped by her place for breakfast on our way to zipling. As the name of this little bakery shop, she baked all kind of sweets including muffins, cheesecakes, macaroons, brownies, wedding cakes, muffin mix...you name it. We ordered a Mango Mac-Nut muffin and a coconut macaroon. It was amazingly good. Mango Mac-Nut muffins were freshly made, still warm on the table. I could not taste the mango flavor in the muffin but it was fluffy and moist. The macaroon was a bit chewy and full of coconut flavor....very nicely done. While we were enjoying our breakfast outside of her shop, Marie was busying with baking her goodies. Her hands were moving non-stop. She even invited me to go inside her kitchen to take photos. I am glad that there had no line and we got to enjoy our relaxing moment with her. I will definitely go back there again. read more

Sweet Marie's was our only option on the island for a vegan wedding cake. After many frantic, short, borderline-rude calls with Marie, I finally got a hold of her assistant Desiree who was actually helpful. Most of my conversations with Marie left me frustrated and defeated. I wish I had known from the very beginning to just call Desiree, but Marie never asked me to. Eventually I figured it out because of her greeting on her answering machine. Frustrating! Marie refused to make a carrot cake without coconut or pecans, insisting it couldn't be done (untrue -- a vegan carrot cakes is one of the easiest to make!!). She refused to even look into making a vegan cream cheese frosting (also incredibly easy!). We compromised on a chocolate layer, and a mango layer, and got the cakes ordered. My clients went to a scheduled tasting. Marie was not prepared and didn't have the cakes ready, and ended up hacking a couple cakes together to be similar to what we ordered. The clients said it was fine and i was relieved. The day of the wedding, she was 2+ hours late and did not call. I had to call her assistant to see where she was, and her assistant asked if I had rescheduled the delivery. I checked back and throughout the entire process, I had said 12:30. I had confirmed 12:30 with her. My clients had confirmed 12:30 with Marie. And yet, no sign of Marie until after 2 the day of the wedding. She blamed traffic, but as everyone knows, Kauai is very traffic-y and that should be something you expect! Not to mention, your client should never have to call you wondering where you are. Totally unprofessional. I had to clarify with Marie many times that I did not want a decorated cake. We wanted something extremely basic, just nicely frosted, because we had an elaborate topper. She seemed hell-bent on doing what she wanted to do instead of what her clients were asking her to do. The cake she delivered was lop-sided and the frosting job was TERRIBLE. There were crumbs throughout the frosting, making it speckled and ugly. All we asked for was a basic frosted cake, literally the easiest thing for a pastry chef to do, and she totally failed. The cake that was delivered was NOT what my clients had ordered, and the cake we had at the wedding was AWFUL. The cake would break apart every time you tried to put some on your fork, like the cake was slowly turning to dust. It tasted terrible. The buttercream was shallow in flavor and the texture was super oily. I know that making vegan goods is not everybody's talent, but if you can't do it well, don't do it at all! Additionally, weddings are high-stress events with a lot of moving cogs. If you can't show up on time or communicate with your clients, don't agree to the gig. read more

On Kauai for two days, off NCL Pride of America 5/29 5/30/14 and unfortunately they were closed for a catering event. That didn't stop us from peeking in the windows and Sweet Marie herself opened the door to welcome us and tell is the bakery was closed. She asked how long we were visiting and we told her we were only on the island two days and she said 'I'll be right back'! She came back with a double chocolate brownie and macaroon like coconut chocolate chip cookie. Wow. Now I normally don't review places that I don't pay for, this is an exception, why?? Because she didn't have to do what she did and I think this place merits a review. The owner could have ignored us instead she acknowledged us, apologized and sent us on our way with samples of her GF creations. We'll be back to Sweet Marie's on another trip! read more

I completely agree with Keira-Anne's review below! I'm gluten intolerant and had just about given up the luxuries of fresh baked bread or a tasty muffin but was SO surprised and excited to find that Sweet Marie's had both! The place was charming and kitschy, filled with happy folks bubbling over the fact that they had "finally found a gluten-free place on the island!" They were eating what looked like the cheesecake and my boyfriend had to hold me back from pouncing on them and stealing it. Marie is charming and funny and reminds me of my mother. So maybe I'm biased :) But she was very attentive and helpful and gave us some of the BEST gf muffins I've ever had. The banana-chocolate chip was hands down the best MUFFIN I've had regardless of what type of flour! We also got the Carrot-Ginger soup and the Jook soup, both bowls licked clean! The iced coffee was the best I've had on the island so far (got it with almond milk, awesome!!) and we left happy. Last year I was also fortunate enough to have been surprised with her lilikoi cake for my birthday and HOT DAMN. That stuff is like CRACK. Definitely recommend if you like passionfruit. Things to keep in mind: You pay for the quality. Having a speciality item like gf sour cream pecan streusel coffee cake muffins (mouth watering) is going to cost a little extra because it's not your everyday 711 muffin. But it's worth it. I plan on going back to Sweet Marie's later this week! :) OTHER HELPFUL GLUTEN FREE PLACES ON THE ISLAND: Kalaheo Cafe offers gluten free bread with their sandwiches! And toast with breakfast, etc. etc. Living Foods Market in Poipu sells gf loafs and tons of yummy health food (Though I admit, pretty pricey). Papaya's Natural Foods in Kapaa is a health nut's dream. Tons of gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free stuff. Vim'n'Vigor is right next to Sweet Marie's. Nice little hole in the wall health food store with gf options, kombucha, probiotics etc. Harvest Market in Hanalei (North shore) is a lot like Papaya's. All around good selections! I've heard of Healthy Hut in Kilauea (North shore) having gf bread but I haven't been yet! Good luck glu-tards, vacation can be fun for you too! read more

It is really awesome to walk into a bakery an be able to order anything!!! This is a 100% dedicated gluten free bakery! The baked goods are fantastic. Marie definitely knows what she is doing. And the place is cozy and nicely decorated. I would give this place 5 stars if it weren't for the way we saw Marie interacting with her staff. She was very sweet to us, and has a lot of energy, but she was really unfair and harsh to her staff, particularly in front of customers, and that is difficult to watch. FIrst off, the price is way too much. I ordered 2 cupcakes, 1 lilikoi, 3 coconut tiny cookies and the total came out to $28 and change!!! I was like, what?! Not coming back. The Morning Glory cupcake - not tasty and not worth $4.50. Size= regular cupcake size. The tiny coconut cookies - ok. Sour Creme Coffee Cake - ok & not worth $4.95. Size = regular cupcake size Lilikoi Burtst - THE MOST TASTIEST dessert. WE LOVED IT! Hence, the two stars :) Highly recommend it. Maybe not here but if you can find it at another place more affordable, do so. SOO GOOD! It's about the size of an average palm size for $9.99. Again, too expensive. Chocolate coconut Maccaroon - ok. $2.50 for small size (approx two medium size bites for me). It is very oily. I know we ordered quite a few things, but just note that SIZE DOES MATTER. I must admit visiting Sweet Marie's Hawaii was Yelp driven. After eating shave ice there was no need for anything more sweet. The yelper in me had to visit here with such great reviews. THANK YOU YELP! I kept reading the reviews and everyone mentioned we had to meet Marie or the experience is not complete. As soon as I walked into this small (6 people was crowded) cute store I knew we found Marie. She greeted us with a smile and welcomed us with open arms. She was in the middle of baking and helping a couple who was smiling ear to ear holding a cookie. From the beginning we knew the experience of meeting Marie would be different. She mentioned, "Oh you need to try this." She grabs a cookie from a baking sheet and stuck the cookie to our mouth to try it. She mentioned, "This is what I do I feed people." From the first bite we knew this lady knows how to bake. On other bake trays she had freshly baked muffins and maroons. We were already sold on the cookies and ask how much are the cookies. She didn't really respond and started making us a pack of cookies. I don't care because I was planning to get a pack anyway. I must say what an experience, I will definitely be back to try her other amazing creations. This is a true hole in a wall bakery where the baker loves what she does. Visiting Marie brought a smile to my face and happy to see places like these still exist. Keep doing what you do Marie, creating amazing creations and spreading the aloha to everyone! Two words: instantly addictive. Sweet Marie's was a gluten-free godsend for my family. We were staying next door at the Waipouli and picked up freshly baked breakfasts quite a few mornings here. Marie was great with my little kids and was so energetic for that time of the morning (no, I'm not a morning person). Every muffin we tried was fantastic and probably the best gluten-free muffin I've had. Great place for breakfast, lunch or a snack. I'd suggest calling ahead because they sometimes have events and aren't open to the public. My wife eats gluten-free and we both thoroughly enjoyed the food. I'm sure there are many words to describe Marie - evidently she goes with 'Sweet' - and she is nothing if not entertaining. Marie is so helpful and knowledgeable about celiac and allergies it was worth it just for the valuable information she gave us. When we pulled up to this bakery and noticed a "sold-out" sign in the window. He "knew" they would be good and promised to drag us back again for a taste because they must be good if they sold out, right? The next day he purchased chocolate, macadamia nut cookies; snicker-doodles; and lilikoi, guava cake... I finally caved after a snorkel-filled day left me hungry and without an another food source (at Tunnels Beach). Granted I was hungry, but I have had many a chocolate chip cookie in my life, and this place's chocolate chip, macadamia cookie was THE BEST damn chocolate chip cookie I have EVER had. The texture was slightly crisp on the very outside, chewy and moist inside, and Uber chocolatey and deliciously flavorful. Two thumbs up. Word. read more

I just discovered this gluten free bakery while I was vacationing in Kauai, and thought I had stumbled acrossed gold! The minute I walked in it took me a few minutes to "take it all in". As soon as I mentally returned to solid ground, I settled on ordering a delicious breakfast sandwich and thought I was good to go...then added a packed lunch, coffecake muffin, and macaroons. I can't tell you the relief of finding a place that a celiac, such as myself, can eat without fear and enjoy one's vacation without getting sick. I can't say enough about this bakery or its owner. If you or a person you're with eats gluten free a stop at Sweet Marie's should be at the top of your list for things to do on the island. Marie's desserts are the best gf desserts I have ever come across. My favorites are the mini ganache cake and the coconut cheesecake. But, her cookies and muffins are also incredible. Marie may be one of the kindest people I have ever met. We called Sweet Marie's on a day that it was closed, she insisted that she would meet us at the bakery. Not only did she open so we could get some seriously delicious gf food, but she also told us about her favorite gluten free restaurants and stores. She also gave us some of her coolers so that we could take what we bought to the other side of the island and gave us tips on her favorite books that dealt with gluten free food. For those of us who need to eat gluten free, we can't do bakeries. Well, look no further than Sweet Marie's! This is a totally gluten free bakery just off the main highway in Kapa'a - across from the McDonalds. My son eats gluten free and it was a huge treat for him to be able to have bakery quality cookies, muffins, and even his birthday cake while we were vacationing on Kauai. Sweet Marie is true to her name. She is truely sweet and wonderful - helping us by making sure that everything was safe for my son to eat (he is also allergic to nuts) as well as recommending safe restaurants and activities. I even took some muffins for the plane. It is not cheap but it is wonderful - especially for those of us who normally could never step foot into a normal bakery. read more

If you have a special person in your life that has a gluten allergy and they constantly can't participate in birthday cakes or have to have their own dessert, look no further than Sweet Maries. She can make it with a week's notice. Located in Kalihi. She can make gluten free pastries or cakes. My middle son has a gluten, dairy and egg allergy and she can accommodate all three allergies and make a chocolate cake. It actually tastes pretty good and the other kids couldn't tell the difference. It's great because now my middle son doesn't feel left out. Of course you will spend a little more on the cake than a regular cake, but it's worth it knowing that everyone eats the same dessert and no one feels left out. She also put a maile lei around each cake so that each recipient or birthday person gets a lei. She also does wedding cakes if you need a lavish gluten free cake. I felt soo guilty eating it..It didn't taste like it was gluten free and I gobbled it down with a quickness. I was almost scared I was going to get sick bc it tasted so normal...I've never had something that tasted so good that was gluten free. (My boyfriend stole some of my baked goods and I was so upset that he ate my gluten free food. He apologized later, saying that they were so good and didn't taste gluten free.) I seriously, really and truly could not have loved Sweet Marie's more than I did. My only regret is that I finally noticed the "gluten free bakery" sign on our second-to-last day on Kauai. I'm gluten-intolerant so to find this gem in Lihue was a huge blessing. I've since read mixed reviews about the bakery and about Marie herself but I assure you that a visit to her bakery is a wonderful - and entertaining - experience. From the moment we walked in, my fiance and I were greeted warmly by Marie and I was definitely charmed by her sense of humour. She paid lots of attention to us, made sure we were well taken care of and even treated us to a warm, fresh-baked muffin to share while we waited for our breakfasts. Nothing I ate at Sweet Marie's was anything short of amazing and her coffee was, hands down, the best cup I had on the Island. Plus, everything is really affordable and reasonably priced. My wife eats gluten free due to an allergy. I can (and do!) eat basically anything I want. Sometimes the places she takes me are flavorless and awful. Not the case here. Amazing gluten free bakery. Went there with my husband for our last meal in kauai before boarding Our flight. This little restaurant/bakery features a unique menu almost everyday. Everything is homemade. The baked goods are delicious. We were given a free brownie just because Marie felt like we waited too long(we didn't). The food is perfectly portioned, with quality over quantity. Everything done well. The bruschetta with poached egg and kale is wonderful. Her salad topped with roasted veggies and Brussels sprouts are excellent. The brownie she offered was preceded by a question, "do you want a corner, middle or edge piece." what a cute question! She's coming out with a cookbook which I will look for and buy! We stopped here to try a couple of the often-Yelped about muffins. We ordered the Mango Macademia Nut muffin and Banana Chocolate Chip muffin. They were both really moist and I would never know they were gluten-free. I especially liked the Banana Chocolate one, but that does not surprise me, given my chocolate-biased palate (is it really dessert if there's no chocolate?) We didn't try anything else, and looking at the menu, I thought the prices seemed high. But where else on Kauai will you find a gluten free bakery? As someone who follows a strict gluten free diet I feel safe to eat at sweet marie's as I know she knows what she is doing and everything will be fine. I enjoy the Morning Glory Muffin the most. I read a article in a local newspaper and heard amazing things about this place. Finally dropped in to give it a try. I ordered a mini ganache cake and coconut tapioca made with Tahitian vanilla bean:) I took a bite of both. Delicious! The cake is rich and a couple bites satisfies a sweet craving. Def. can be shared. The coconut tapioca was awesome. While I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Marie herself...the two young ladies were very knowledgeable and friendly. I eat gluten free out of necessity. During our week on Kauai I was excited to learn about Sweet Marie's. The baked goods are soy free too -- hurrah! I had a sour cream coffee cake muffin and a tropical pineapple coconut muffin. Tasty, moist, crumbly, satisfying (although I needed a napkin and didn't realize there wasn't one in the bag). More flavor in the tropical muffin, but the coffee cake probably would have been amazing with coffee. When Marie came out of the kitchen, she didn't acknowledge us at the counter, and it's a rather small place. I would have liked to chat about our mutual love of muffins, or at least thank her for making my day. Gluten free baked goods are the great uniter after all. read more

Marie, you rocked my gluten free traveling experience. After several thwarted attempts to get to the bakery before she closed, I finally got there and had the most amazing coffee cake...and blueberry muffin and brownie and a mini ganache chocolate cake. I had everyone sampling all the goods and no one could tell a difference. Mostly b/c they were too busy hmm-ing about their delicious bites. I also called her while I was out shopping and starving, never a good combo for us GF eaters, and she really helped us out and sent us to a deliciously safe Vietnamese restaurant. If you want something in particular, call her and let her know. She's really flexible but her kitchen is small and she shops frequently so everything is really fresh. It's pretty reasonable, more than I would really want to spend on a whole cake but well worth every penny. read more

A couple of years ago we visited Sweet Marie's when she just had a little bakery and I think she should have stuck to that. My advice: Go in and get yourself a delicious baked treat but don't stick around for a meal. We were excited when we heard that Marie had opened a little restaurant serving breakfast and lunch. We went for lunch and were disappointed not only by the service but also by the food quality. Servers weren't trained on the cash register and set our table with dirty silverware. The Jook soup tasted like it was made with canned broth and the Hawaiian style pork was tough (perhaps overcooked or not cooked slowly enough?) With so many restaurants on the island catering to the gluten-free lifestyle, I hope Sweet Marie's steps up their game. read more
