From the service to the food, this place is amazing. Not only was the service fantastic, but the ramen was great! I believe that it's the broth that makes a ramen a good ramen, and this place hits the nail on the head. As a table, we got the chicken ramen, angry zoku ramen, original ramen, and salmon sushi doughnut. Let me start off with saying that the salmon on the sushi doughnut was so fresh and smooth. You can tell it's of high quality! Also, the ramen is fantastic, and unlike many other ramen places, the size/amount of food you get beats other ramen places. It's been forever and a day since I've had some poke. We haven't been going many places at all since Corona hit, but I had this place bookmarked and we had a wedding shower close by, so decided to drop in. My boyfriend doesn't love fish, and I wish I could change that, but he's such a good sport about going to poke places with me regardless. I was in the poke mood, so I ordered the Super Poke bowl, I believe it was called. My bf ordered a chicken burrito, but I totally forgot it comes wrapped in seaweed. Ooops! He did like the inside, and I tried a bite, and thought it was good. My poke was super fresh, and good. The spicy mayo wasn't very spicy, though. The only thing that was really a downside was that my bf loves acai, and we ordered an acai bowl. So after ordering at the counter, he and I sat down, and waited on our meals. They came, we ate, and then we were still left waiting for the bowl. Finally we just decided we weren't going to even eat it, because it was taking that long. They said they had to make it upstairs, but I saw a few people in the interim get things delivered to their table from the upstairs. So I really don't know what happened there. That might have been the difference maker for my bf since he's not a fish guy, but I really enjoyed my poke. The restaurant is also very clean, and has seating outside as well and it's located close to downtown Duluth, so one day we need to bring our dog here and make it a family day. We had to come to this place when we looked at the menu and saw poke bowls and ramen. We enjoy both and were waiting for a restaurant in this location to open. To our surprise there is two floors with another menu on the second floor which were empanadas and boba rice (I think, since I didn't go upstairs). I had a Build My Own Ramen with Kale Noodles and Spicy Pork Broth. I added Kimchi, Sweet Corn, and Chicken. The broth was very creamy and delicious. After seeing the bowl, I figured I would need to order more food, but I was actually full after I finished. We also ordered veggie Spring Rolls and they were freshly made and light. This review is for the bubble tea portion of this place. The place hosts multiple establishments. I didn't try them all. I only when to the bubble tea at the second floor. It's was ok. I got the green tea with aloe and mango flavoring. When they suggested mango flavoring. I was willing to try but the word flavoring doesn't sound right to me. I think it would be better if they were focusing on more traditional bubble like. Like more natural than having variety with alot of flavoring. I think if I was more specialized at some some good with alight various it would taste better. Like being really good a one thing then okay at at many. If that makes sense. There are many reasons I can't stand fusion style foods like for starters... 1. It's a sorry excuse for not attempting the authentic so you have to have a crappy mix in order to sell it... 2. It's generally made for the weaker palette which is why I find that generally most black people can't stomach the smell and taste of kimchee or why white people are weak with spicy foods and so everything is dumbed down... 3. It comes off lazy and makes it difficult to know what is what like you really won't know what bulgogi really tastes like if it's shoved into a taco shell and you call it a "bulgogi taco" when you lose the flavors of the meat and marinade in that mess So when I saw this new Asian place open up in Duluth's quaint downtown, it was worth trying. So I look them up, check their menu and prices, and look! They have ramen and it's rather comparable with other places. So I decide to try it. I order the Angry Zuko which is the spicy version of their Village original. The "black" is black sesame oil which adds a new depth of flavor. I also added Kimchee to for a DOLLA r at least I thought I did. Let me count the ways I was disappointed... 1. Spicy isn't spicy. The weakest pallet won't even break a sweat... this wasn't spicy at all!!!! 2. Temperature was a let down. This is ramen. The bowl needed to be steaming!!! There was barely any steam coming off my bowl and I can't appreciate that when ramen is supposed to arrive scalding hot! 3. Interior seemed like a cut and paste of the wannabe trendy style joints in Duluth with harsh lighting, cramped seating, pew benches seating you a mile an boba your food. There was really nothing that had me wanting to stay there... 4. Flavor. Initially I could get hints of the pork broth which was deep in terms of complexity but that didn't linger which was disappointing. After eating though, I felt as the sharp savory feel of the broth was akin to MSG being used to season the dish. 5. Ingredients. They pile on the veggies. I had to initially take some out as corn and I don't mix. You can't digest the stuff so why bother eating it!? But also, they don't give enough pork. They had really pathetic slices of what looked to be this reconstituted chashu pork... no flavor, just sharp MSG mouthfeel overall post consumption! Overall, I found the ramen to be a disappointment and was expecting something better than what $12 could get me.. I need to try their other stuff but in terms of ramen, 2 stars and won't be going back for the ramen for sure!!! read more

This location is perfect for outside seating in what is now a busy Downtown Duluth. This is a trendy, order at the counter, restaurant with a vast menu. I visited with a friend and started with a miso ginger salad and crab crunch salad. I would note that the ramen was prepared and served prior to receiving the salads, so you may want to stagger your order or perhaps you could ask they wait on the ramen? Regardless the ramen was delicious. I ordered the Angry Zuko (spicy) and definitely could have used more heat (but I love spice). Definitely give this place a try. I love this place. My only major issue is the poke price. You can go to PokeBar or PokeCity and get 3 proteins, both crab and seaweed salad included, and unlimited toppings for $11. Sweet Octopus charges for $12 for a small bowl with only one protein and they consider crab salad a protein. Your veggie toppings are also limited to several and they don't have a shoyu house sauce. They have a hip coffee shop upstairs with cold bubble teas and hot empanadas, my favorite is the caprese empanada, and my favorite bubble teas are the brown sugar or taro tea, both awesome! The Poke bowls downstairs are super fresh and delicious! My son and I get the shrimp tempura bowl with beets, avocado and cucumber and the sauces, spicy mayo and eel sauce, delicious! I've only tried the empanadas so I can't speak on the ramen but I will say the place was filled, top to bottom, with patrons of all ages enjoying their different meals. Now, for the empanadas, I tried the guava and the pulled pork. The combo was pretty good for a lunch meal. The guava was smaller than I expected. I would have loved to have more because it was so sweet and sweets are my favorite. The bbq sauce with the pulled pork empanada was not my favorite but it did help add some needed flavor. It was much larger and filling than the guava. I came pretty hungry and probably needed 1 more of either to be completely full so keep that in mind when ordering. There is a ton of light in the building and even a patio with a gorgeous view you can use on warmer days. Everyone working was extremely nice and had a huge smile on their faces. read more

I wanna start off by saying how the layout was amazing and beautifully designed. Loved how they were able to team up with a few other restaurants. I tried the sushi burrito and it was great, great flavors in all. Lacked some sauce, could have been a bit more generous. And the time it took to make our order was over 10 minutes. We had time to go upstairs and get drinks and a snack for the little one and come back down to wait some more. Now the bubble tea. Very disappointing. Tasted like plain milk and warm boba. Boba had no flavors to them. I ordered a brown sugar milk tea, tasted no tea, just plain milk. And was super warm. The boba melted all the ice. And I like boba. But my cup had more boba than it had of the drink. Husband ordered the taro milk tea and all he tasted was the powder. There was no sweetness in either drink when we asked for regular sweet. We ordered orange juice for the little one, on the screen in the back showed $3 for a small drink. On their menu showed a different price. And what they charged us was different as well. Should have done a better job with the menu and the set up for the prices. Overall I know it was only day 2 of opening. Maybe they'll do better later on. Was really looking forward towards the whole concept of Asian fusion and boba tea. And ended up really disappointed. The ambiance is amazing!! The customer service was okay. I had to speak before being acknowledged and i was 6 feet away from the cashier. My order was ready right when I got there and everything looked amazing! I ordered the calamari, pho with a miso base and all the toppings (chicken) and Panang curry. The calamari was fried too long and the batter was to thick for my liking. It also was a tad bit salty but the sweet chili sauce aided. The pho was plentiful but the miso base was average. Adding the chili to it helped a lot! The kimchi, noodles and chicken were the highlights of the dish! I could have those three alone! Lastly the curry was delicious. I didn't like how large the broccoli cuts were and the green beans either but it was good overall. I just took both the broccoli and green beans out and enjoyed. Overall I probably won't return but the location is prime for several other restaurants to try! read more

I've heard of the Octopus Bar bit have never been so was excited when I heard this was opened in Duluth. Everything was really good! The shrimp massaman was very good, nice balanced flavor, good spice not overpowering. It could have used at least double the vegetables, the potatoes were a bit over powering texture wise. The Raman was excellent. We had the vegetable noodles and broth and it was on point! Then upstairs we went for empanadas which were fully of flavor and so fresh and flaky! And we couldn't NOT have the bubble tea which was great. Overall everything was really good, nothing was outstanding, mind blowing or new so couldn't go five stars. We tried the BEC and pulled pork empanadas which was so good and then I had the Strawberry Bubble Tea with Strawberry Poppings which is my new fav. The place was clean and they followed Covid guidelines. The staff was nice as well and they took an allergic reaction situation that my fiancé had very seriously so I appreciate that. Sweet Octopus is a two-story spot in the heart of downtown Duluth that combines several Asian food stalls into one (well, technically two) beautiful restaurant. The upstairs, which we did not venture to until after we ate (so we were way too full to try anything) serves empanadas and all sorts of teas. Downstairs, you can order selections from Poké Burri, Lifting Noodles Ramen and Yuwachit's Thai. They also serve wine, beer and sake. We got a sushi burrito from Poké Burri (the Kung Fu-rrito) because we already know and love their food. We also got a bowl of ramen each, I got the Angry Zuko with kimchi and my boyfriend got the Spicy Miso. The Angry Zuko was a lot saltier than I had expected and didn't have a lot of heat, but the savory flavor and ingredients were delicious. My boyfriend really enjoyed his ramen, as well, but said it wasn't very hot (temp-wise). I'm definitely excited to see more of these food stalls/cafeterias spreading north of the perimeter! I love what Sweet Octopus has to offer and hope it does well in Duluth!! read more

I read a lot of the hype as this new food hall experiment was opening in Duluth. It however falls short. The ramen is college grade, lacking in flavor. Upstairs is a dessert bar the also sells empanadas. It wasn't obvious you could go up there and we only did after over hearing another dinner. Since we were there early we were able to order with ease and there was plenty of seating to choose from inside and outside. We ordered a sample of things. We had the shrimp wonton soup, classic ramen with pork, calamari, beef bulgogi empanada, Demogorgon, Philly burrito, and bubble tea. We were given a number to take to our table while we waited for our food. First came the ramen for the kids. They both loved it and the broth was very flavorful. Then came the burritos and the calamari. I loved the Philly burrito but my only complaint was the size of them. I wish there were a little bit bigger. The calami was cooked nice and the sauce that came with it was really good. Then came my empanada. The crust was light and flaky and the bulgogi was really nice. I was pleasantly surprised. Went there for lunch and service was pleasant, decor was nice and most importantly, food was good! I got the vegetarian poke bowl with fried tofu. It was so fresh and the miso ginger/sweet chili peanut sauces were delicious. Lots of wonderful vegetables (beets, cucumbers, edamame, avocado) over sushi rice and a very generous portion of fried tofu with the above-mentioned sauces topped with fried onions and pickled ginger.
