I've been coming to this restaurant for lunch every so often since I started working in the area 3 years ago, and each time it's a solid experience. The lunch offerings and portions are a good value, and staff/service is always pleasant. I've yet to have had a bad meal here, and I know my colleagues agree. In fact one of our sales folks from the Midwest *always* comes here for lunch whenever he is visiting our office. Whether dining alone or with a group, the staff is happy to accommodate - including separate checks with no issue. Honestly, the omakase is average at best. There are only 8 kinds (so there are repeats) of fish. Save the money and get the deluxe, unless you really want the sea urchin/shrimp/scallop. I wash craving Japanese food and Haru Chiba was the perfect place to go. The sashimi was so high quality the fish just melts in your mouth. The platter was about $30 and the roll was $18. I'm not a huge fan of Japanese food. This is very Japanese: I think very authentic. I'd give it 3 stars except: my wife and kids LOVE Japanese cuisine and this is one of their favorites. We've been going periodically for over 20 years and it's consistent. So, I think it's better than my dislike of Japanese food would lead me to think. My 5 kids and my wife all love it. This place has been here for a while. I remember going here years ago and it has not changed. The restaurant has a wide store front. Where are all the sitting is arranged lining the window. They also have some side seating on your left hand as you go in. It's very simple not much decor. The service is good no complaints. The food has always been fresh. And the pricing is fair. They have some often new specials that they normally will just print out. If you can't think of anything to eat, those are always good combos. Their nigiri is sliced very thick so you definitely get your moneys worth. Their house Ginger salad is just the way I like it. Some places don't give you enough or the flavoring is off, but here it is simple and perfect. Their Ramen broth is also very flavorful, not too salty. I recently visited Haru Ichiban and had a very disappointing experience with the service. While the food itself was good and reasonably priced, the service from the host completely ruined our visit. We arrived just a few minutes before opening, and the host (we were told her name is Michelle) told us rather bluntly that we should not be there since the restaurant had not opened yet. However, right after us, another couple walked in and asked to be seated. She greeted them warmly with a smile and kindly directed them to a table. The difference in how we were treated was very noticeable and uncomfortable. As first-time customers, this left a very poor impression. The interaction felt rude and discriminatory, and it created an unwelcoming atmosphere right from the start. Management should be aware of how guests are being treated, as this kind of behavior reflects poorly on the restaurant. Although the food was decent, I don't think I will be returning. read more

Small, family-owned vibe--clean and cozy with friendly, standard service. Food was decent for the price. Quality and taste overall were average, but good enough for a casual family meal. I'm a picky eater, and while the Special Ramen had a nice homemade feel, the Spicy Tan Tan Ramen (on their popular list) didn't hit the mark for me--left half the bowl untouched. I ordered the sashimi deluxe lunch and it came with miso soup and salad but it didn't come with rice. The fish was very fresh but I think I expected a different variety or something more especially for the price. This is a solid Japanese restaurant. The menu is massive and they have just about everything from small plates, kushiyaki, okonomiyaki, takoyaki.. probably more yakis. Sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, tray style meals, and much much more They're on a strip so plenty of parking. The shop itself is a decent size but not huge so wouldn't be good for large parties inside. We ordered the haru ichiban sushi $50 but they were out of uni so I was pretty bummed about that. We also ordered takoyaki which was delicious here. A must try, buttery, melty dough and tons of flavor. Brother in law ordered onigiri and let me try.. it was good but so much rice in comparison to filling. The sushi platter was very generously sized and had a few good pieces of tuna on there. It's supposed to come with a miso soup but they forgot, but I didn't say anything because we were full anyway. The fatty tuna maki roll was excellent. I wasn't crazy about the salmon roe pieces on the sushi platter but most everything else was good Good option in Duluth... The food here is pretty good. The front desk originally told us it would be a 40 minute wait but they were actually able to seat us within about 5 minutes. The service can be a little slow since it's a small business but the food is worth it. I saw the employees move tables around to accommodate large families and groups so they're pretty flexible. Why haven't I come here for sushi I'm so long? I need to add this back to my rotation. The sushi rolls are huge and that doesn't mean they are oversized with rice. Instead they are filled with fish so your bite is packed with flavor and the good stuff. There's a variety on the menu so next time I plan to get sushi as an appetizer and try other dishes. We ordered: Chicken Karaage- fried chicken nugget bites. Kids loved this of course. Oishi Roll- Nice stack and presentation. This is probably one of my top 3 Japanese restaurants in Duluth. Honestly, it's more of a dive than a nice, posh restaurant...and I really don't like how small and cramped their eating quarters are. I've had this "Rainforest" Sushi Roll before, and I was stunned with its beauty...and amazing taste! So much so that I had to repeat this order of the "Rainforest" Sushi Roll. Well, sadly, the presentation wasn't as spectacular this time around (compare the pic from my previous visit!), but still colorific nevertheless. Also, tasted phenomenal...just as before. I've only had this same dish (twice), but already it totally makes sense that this is a Zagat-rated restaurant. There was also this major annoyance on this particular dining experience...in that this solo guy seated right next to me basically yelled out an essay of his fabulous life and achievements to strangers seated next to him. He went on and on talking loudly throughout my entire time there...WOW. THIS is another reason why I hate small restaurants and small spaces. Zero privacy...and when you encounter someone like this who has the need to share himself with the whole restaurant, it can basically ruin your dinner lol. So normally, an experience like this will make me wanna rate down the restaurant itself...I mean, OMG?!? Yet, I can't...their sushi roll was too damn good! We don't live near Haru Ichiban, so our visits are infrequent and usually coincide with shopping somewhere on Pleasant Hill Road. This time in, we tried the sushi deluxe lunch at 1995 which includes miso soup and a small salad. Yes, we enjoyed our sushi and even managed to take a few pieces home. The reason we were full, was because we also ordered an appetizer of fried squid legs (gesso kara age). We thought this dish was a bit expensive, but went for it and OMG, where we ever pleasantly surprised when it came. The order was huge and we really enjoyed it. Needless to say, will be back first to get some more of those great squid legs and then to get some more sushi! The service was Japanese which means polite and quietly efficient. Very delicious sushi and udong here. I hadn't had sushi in a while so I decided to go all out and try their deluxe chirashi. Assortment of sushi over rice, but the deluxe includes fatty tuna and uni (sea urchin - one of my favorites). Did not disappoint, every piece was spot on delicious in my opinion. I will confess I have hard time deciding so I asked our waitress for a good sushi recommendation. Her favorite was the Sunshine roll and it was different but fresh, all of the rolls looked amazing though. Going specifically for the ramen, we ordered the Special one (sorry, can't remember the exact name) but my boyfriend loved it, I thought it was just ok. Purely food based review: Pick 2 Dinner - Hamberg and Tempera Set: For ~$20 you can get a lot depending on your choices. I went with a juicy Hamberg that came with wedge fries, and a nice tempura set that comes with super large portions! Fatty Tuna roll - Amazingly fatty and worth it if you had to pick one roll.
