When I went to Ernie's, I have the monster sandwich, which was undefinable! It was not only a huge, but mega delicious!!!

Everyone was super duper friendly right when we walked in. I can't stress that enough: these people are very kind! Don't worry about the weird setup, it's part of the charm. Remember: Bring cash! Used a card, and the cashier had to type it in manually (it was nice of them to do that). Now for the food - We got a few meats--turkey pastrami, corned beef and a "wildcard" (I let the staff pick, and whatever it was it was good). We also got the special spices etc. I do prefer a more of an Italian sandwich on a hard roll, so I'm not sure the soft onion roll is for me. If you like a cold sandwich un-toasted and generally basic with a bit of a twist, you will love this! My husband and I enjoyed the sandwich (split it, and they put mayo on half at my request). It's a charming spot, quality food and I'm glad we tried it. Skip the spicy potato salad. It was bland, sadly. read more

I know that this place has been here since time immemorial, but today was my first time going in person. My friends have always ordered carryout, but ordering in person was so much more enjoyable. While the interior is by-and-large a throwback to the past; the staff is most definitely a breath of fresh air. They're all kind, patient, and make the best sandwiches! I had the 2 meats (turkey and turkey pastrami) with everything sans pickles plus love spice on an onion roll. I'm beyond satisfied and it was divine! The price was reasonable for a deli sandwich at $10 before tax and 4% card fee. I usually go for corned beef at the deli, but this was a leaner yet equally tasty option in an attempt to be more health conscious. Needless to say, I'll be back! Thanks, ladies! read more

What can I say about Ernie's Market that hasn't already been said?? All I know is that every time I've been here I get some of the best customer service one could ever ask for and the sandwiches are equally as wonderful. Admittedly I've always been hooked on the Monster and rarely ever change it up because my mouth started salivating just typing the name of my favorite sandwich that they offer. Truly it doesn't matter what you choose, it's going to be fantastic. A true neighborhood icon serving the local community and guys like me that drive 60+ miles to get my "fix" for over 100 years!!! Ernie's is a staple in the neighborhood and has a steady stream of sandwich lovers coming through the doors. You choose your bread, meat, cheese, veggies and condiments and they build your sandwich. Mine: 3 meats (turkey, pastrami, roast beef), 2 cheeses (American, Swiss), all the veggies except pickles and jalepeños, mustard, mayo, olive oil and "love spice" on an onion roll...it was at least 5 inches tall! I had to bite it in sections...bottom 1/2, then top 1/2. Overall, it was good, the only thing that would have made it better was a better onion roll. It was a little dry. I was full after about 1/3 of the sandwich, I'll finish the rest later. The gentleman in front of me and I were first time visitors so we received the "no cut" special...you don't get your sandwich cut in half if it's your first time at Ernie's. Small market serving up BIG sandwiches in a quiet neighborhood on the edge of oak park/ferndale. The market itself seemed to have drinks and ice cream, with the sandwich area in the back. It was my first time in and the ladies working the sandwich counter could tell, but they were super nice when explaining how it works and making suggestions. Although, she wouldn't cut my sandwiches in half because it's custom that "newbees" don't get their sandwich cut in their first order Don't look at the Ernie's market "website" as it's a scam and the sandwiches are on there don't exist when ordering. Ernie's market serves "build your own" sandwiches sort of like subway. From my understanding, the monster and baby monster sandwiches have specific meats and you add your veggies? I think they could take their sandwiches up a notch by offering a toasted sandwich option, but once you see what they're working with inside, it's not expected to get it toasted, lol. I got a single turkey sandwich on an onion roll, American & Swiss was suggested, and I got lettuce, onion, Tom, pickles, cucumbers, mayo&mustard, and they told me I HAD TO GET the "love spice" so I did. I've driven by this place about 10 times and finally decided to stop in and give it a try. Was pleasantly greeted as I walked in and was asked if I had been there before. I haven't so gave me some recommendations one what's popular. I ended up getting a 2 meat (Corned Beef and Pastrami) on an Onion Roll. Amanda was the one making my sandwich and she packed the sandwich so well with meat and toppings. The sandwich was fresh and you could taste all of the ingredients coming together to make the perfect bite. The love spice sauce, from what I'm told Ernie makes himself, was a great addition and kick to the sandwich that brought it all together. I'll definitely be stopping by again! read more

If I could rate Ernie's Market a 11 1/2 I would ! Looks like a Party Store out front, but inside is Metro Detroit best lunch sandwich in Michigan !! If you're lucky enough to catch Ernie in person omg you're in for a show!! He is a little older now so that may not happen but he comes in from time to time. I've heard about this place for years. I happened to meet my husband for lunch ch and this is where we ended up. What a great surprise! It's a tiny little shop that sells sandwiches out of the back - we split a turkey and Swiss on and onion roll along with some potato salad. Meeting Ernie made the entire trip worth it. We have know about this spot for a very long time, but we finally were able to make our way over here to try the famous sandwiches. We had the honor of meeting Ernie himself and he was quite fun and very entertaining. We arrived right before the shop opened. Even standing in line was fun, we met many friendly people and heard a lot of stories about people's lives. A man who arrived the same time we did came all the way from Seattle to get a sandwich. The people working the shop and preparing the sandwiches were very friendly. They went out of their way to make up feel welcome, they even gave us a sample of the love seasoning on a cucumber to make sure we liked the taste. Since Ernie has taken a back seat to making the sandwiches, he was not there when we arrived, and they took pride in honoring all of his wishes, including, if it is your first time, he does not want your sandwich but, he wants you to fight through the monster. They had some delicious looking chips and cold salads and a case of beverages. But we just wanted the sandwiches. As they wrapped our sandwiches, that was when Ernie arrived. He made sure to talk to us, draw the hearts on the parchment paper, and make sure we were having a good time. We took them to the picnic tables outside. While Ernie was doing chores, he took some extra time to speak to us a bit more. He even greeted all of his neighbors in the area, he is the friendliest. The sandwiches were nice, piled high with meat, veggies, and mustard, mayo, love spice and olive oil. They were quite the battle to eat, of course there were leftovers. THIS IS MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT!!!!!! every time i go my WEEK is REJUVENATED! i love big meat sandwich. Someday I want to conquer the monster. Someday. Every time I get a sandwich (I recommend corn beef!) with love spice and other meat and stuff, a faygo, and a bag of potato chips. This is the peak of food. Ernie and all other employees are consistently kind and wonderful to talk to. I bring all my friends here and recommend it to anyone visiting the area. The ambiance is awesome and you always see so many friendly faces. My favorite feeling is introducing someone new to these sandwiches and watching others in the market learn what deli food has to offer. If I was on death row, i'd have ernie's as my last meal. A friend mentioned Ernie's the other day, and it's been on my mind, so I decided to go there after work today. I saw that they've updated the area and put in several tables with umbrellas in the yard. That was a nice touch. But that's where the upgrades end. As I mentioned in my previous review, Ernie is no longer there. Prices have gone up AGAIN, and the sandwiches have gotten markedly smaller. There is a $1 upcharge for corned beef, pastrami and chicken. All of the sides are apparently $5, and there's not very much in the small containers. The women making the sandwiches seemed grumpy, and there are what I consider rude signs all over the place. One even said something to the effect of "Only dummies go up to the counter and hand the cashier a card. THIS IS CASH ONLY!" I ordered a turkey and corned beef sandwich with lettuce, cucumber and onion on rye. They never told me what kind of cheese they had. And they put so much "love spice" (which seemed to be mostly seasoned salt) on the sandwich that I couldn't finish it -- and not because it was big, because it wasn't. That 2 meat sandwich was $9. Sadly, I think the era of the charm of Ernie's has passed. I see no need to return. read more

It lived up to the hype! I got the Ernie's Monster with everything, and it was a huge sandwich! The meats were excellent, the veggies fresh and cheese pairing perfect! The onion roll was soft and fresh, and I had them make it with all the condiments and Ernie's spice mix. And for those who complain about the price, for what you get it's priced good. Everyone wants gourmet food at fast food prices and that's what kills these businesses. They offer a high quality product, it's going to cost a bit more. But I would rather keep a business like Ernie's going than force them to compromise on quality ingredients! And as a plus I got to meet Ernie and shake his hand! Today was my first time trying Ernie's and it did not disappoint!! The lady making my sandwich was very kind, and she makes one heck of a sandwich!! I got Turkey, salami, a bunch of veggies and the special spice mixture.... The spice was phenomenal!!! Not spicy - just so flavorful. They also have tons of chips and drinks inside to pair with your sandwich. Outside there are about 6 picnic tables to eat it! They were all super clean. Overall a great place to enjoy a lunch. Service at the counter was a bit dry and difficult to keep up with while ordering as a first-timer, but the cashier was very friendly and sweet, so that made up for it. I didn't expect more than a great sandwich, but Ernie immediately introduced himself. A warm welcome, quality ingredients and a unique shop. We don't have Faygo soda in Texas and my son wishes he could try all the flavors. The raspberry crumble bar, by the cash register, was also fabulous. It is a cash only establishment. There is outdoor seating if you prefer to eat on site. The sandwiches have a home made feel to it. There are 4 bread/bun options, 2 kinds of cheese, and 7 different meats. Upon your first time, it is "tradition" to not have your sandwich cut in half.
