Stopped in for lunch, definitely a place to eat again. Everything is vegan, making for easy non-dairy (allergy) selections. The Thursday lunch special was one main dish with two sides. The two of us were both happy with our selections. I was happy to be able to try okra gumbo with sides of BBQ cauliflower and grilled veggies. My fried had jambalaya with sides of creamy potatoes (like au gratin) and fried cauliflower. I'd try any of those again, as well as having something new as well. I was so happy to find a restaurant that serves vegan Creole/Cajun/Soulfood while I was visiting New Orleans. They have parking on the street and on their side of a shared parking lot against the building. Be careful not to park in the H&R Block spots or you'll get towed. I was greeted warmly as I entered the restaurant. Everyone was friendly and helpful. You order at the counter, it's cafeteria style and they scoop up your choices into a divided container. You can choose from 1 to 4 entrees and they will offer you a sample if you're undecided. My dining companion ordered the vegan lasagna, vegan mac & cheese, orange cauliflower. I was sampled a little bit of each. The vegan lasagna 10/10. It's very hearty and delicious. The vegan mac & cheese, 7.5/10. I tend to like a little bit more zing to mine. I sampled the collard greens and I'm not a fan because I don't like kale, so I figured I wouldn't like collard greens either. I chose the curry vegetables, jambalaya, okra gumbo and orange cauliflower and I got talked into a piece of cornbread as I checked out. Curry vegetables, 10/10. They were cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. The jambalaya was on point. I loved it 10/10. The okra gumbo was just not for me 5/10. The orange cauliflower was 10+/10. It was so freaking good! I'm missing it already. it reminded me of panda express. I brought the well-wrapped cornbread all the way back to St. Louis and it's a 10/10. I wish I had bought more. They have a self-serve, water cooler, or bottled water or juice. This is a casual neighborhood restaurant and it is a fantastic place to try vegan food if you never have tried it. If you are hard-core vegan, there's so much here to enjoy and so many gluten-free options. I will definitely be returning on my next visit to New Orleans. read more

The macaroni and cheese was excellent, as was the cornbread. I haven't liked collard greens or okra much in the past, but I enjoyed both here. Bread pudding was also great. It's cafeteria-style and the line moves quickly. Wasn't super busy when we arrived shortly after they opened at 11 but by noon it was pretty full. Staff were friendly and wanted to make sure you knew that everything was vegan, even if it looked like meat. Great value for the amount of food you get too. My spouse and I each got a four-item plate which essentially served as 2-3 meals for each of us throughout our travel day. We stayed in NOLA for 5 days and was able to come to Sweet Soulfood on our last day. I am so happy we got to get our grub on here. The red beans and rice were really good and definitely rate it 10/10. It wasn't overly salty. It was perfectly balanced and beans were not overly mushy. Best red beans and rice i've had. The fried mushrooms and cabbage/collard greens were good. The mac and cheese was a bit sweet for my taste but hot sauce came to the rescue. My wife loved the candied yams and creole curry. If we.... I mean WHEN we come back to NOLA, we are definitely hitting up this place. The staff was very friendly and they were dancing and having a good time. Loved it. I am so happy a place like this exists!!! I really wanted to hit a vegan place during a recent trip to NOLA but wasn't sure if I could fit it into my binge eating-schedule. We had actually planned to go to Willie Mae's but one can only take sitting in the sweltering heat and humidity during midday for so long and we took it as a sign that we should check out this place instead. They have SO many options it's so difficult to choose and GF couldn't so decided to order five things lmao: fried cauliflower, mac n cheese, jambalaya, mushrooms and gravy, and collard greens. I stuck with the mac n cheese, red beans and rice, and green beans. The green beans were incredible, I adored the seasoning. The red beans and rice were TO DIE. They do fucking vegan jambalaya RIGHT, you won't even miss the meat. The mac n cheese was my least favorite, it was slightly sweet and lacking that umami flavor one seeks when consuming pasta and "cheese". We were literally so full from our over-ordering that we had to take leftovers back and thus the collard greens were the collateral damage. As we only ate them cold as leftovers, it's hard to judge but they also were not my favorite and neither of us felt compelled to finish them. We ordered one of their juices which was also delicious but a touch too sweet for me, easily remedied by diluting with water that is offered. One of the staff members who checked us out (maybe the owner or manager?) seemed to be a little bit impatient and annoyed with us when we were asking questions about the juices during check out (literally asking what juices they recommend/are available and seems like a reasonable question..)which detracted from the experience.
