We had an absolutely exceptional dinner at Café Amélie tonight! With the recent rain, the usual potent French Quarter street smells were washed away, leaving the air beautifully fresh and the temperatures perfectly cool. Though pop-up showers were still lingering, my husband and I decided to take a gamble on courtyard dining--and I am so glad we did! Sheltered under the green umbrellas surrounded by historic brick walls, lush greenery, and rain-kissed citrus trees, the atmosphere was incredibly romantic and peaceful. The courtyard's intimate layout even brought a bit of extra magic to our evening. We sat near another wonderful couple (and their adorable daughter) and became fast friends, sharing laughs and conversation throughout the night. What truly anchored the experience, though, was the incredible service. The staff was remarkably personable, helpful, and welcoming. The dinner itself was excellent from start to finish, showcasing immense culinary skill across every dish. We started with the delicious brussels sprouts and a uniquely seasoned spring/summer gumbo that was unlike any version we've had before (oh, what I would give for the recipe). As for the entrées, the shrimp and grits were phenomenal, and the blackened catfish sandwich with a fresh salad was executed flawlessly...and the bread pudding was fantastic, too! It is rare to find an experience where top-tier hospitality, a breathtaking environment, and great food come together so (seemingly) effortlessly. Café Amélie is an absolute must-visit! We were walking around open to going anywhere for dinner and it was fairly early for dinner. We came across Cafe Amelie and it looked cute inside and was able to get sat right away. The host was extremely welcoming and friendly. Our server and helpers were over quickly to drop off waters and greet us. I ended up ordered the salmon. With it being so early and only one or 2 other tables besides my friend and me, the food did take longer to come out than I expected it to. Both of us did thoroughly enjoy what we got. The salmon was crispy on the outside with a nice sauce over it. We thought we'd have time to get dessert so we ordered a couple but that too took a very long time. We finally waved down our server to cancel and get the check since we had to be somewhere and he apologized and said their WiFi was going in and out so it could be that it was registering on the kitchen side. That may have explained why our entrees took too long. If it wasn't for the service and the food being great - I would not be thrilled about timing. We got there around 5:30p and had to leave by 7:15p so an almost 2 hours experience that probably could have been 1 hour. read more

Cafe Amelie is a small place serving up big flavors right in the French Quarter. We had a reservation there during the last weekend of Mardi Gras and we are glad we decided to go here. Checking in was very quick and we were able to be seated without our full party, which we were very grateful for. Our server was patient and understanding with our party size and our requests for changes to our dishes. Ordering was quick and the food came out promptly even with a busy restaurant. We ordered the waffles with a side of bacon, the chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream, peeled gulf shrimp, and a bowl of gumbo. The waffle was standard and the bacon was nice and crispy. All three other dishes were fantastic. Starting with the gumbo, easily the best we've ever had. Full of savory flavors and spice without being too heavy in one direction; incredibly balanced dish. Likewise, the peeled gulf shrimp were a hit. The shrimp was cooked right and the peppery but sweet flavors came out in refreshing bursts. Lastly, the chocolate molten lava cake was the sweet we needed at the end of the meal, it was decadent. We were pleased with our meal here and thankfully so because we had high hopes when we came in. Amazing! We came here for breakfast and loved it so much, we decided to come back for dinner the same day! Inside is super cute and they also have a nice patio in the back. Service was welcoming and felt like being at a friend's house. Reservations are available 60 days in advance, and we booked exactly 60 days out and were grateful to have a lovely table in the courtyard on a perfect Sunday morning on the last day of Jazzfest. We came here for an early dinner before a ghost tour and left so disappointed with the food and ended up having a second dinner afterward. I miss the food here already. We were able to snag a walk-in spot at the bar thankfully (it was packed in there) while we were briefly in New Orleans. Cute place with a lot of character as far as the interior goes. I had a lot of fun staring at the liquor bottles on the wall and watching the bartenders do their thing. We ordered shrimp & grits (10/10), some sort of pumpkin seed spread with bread (10/10), gumbo, and the Cajun poutine. We made a last minute reservation at Cafe Amelie after a tour ended. We had passed by it and it looked so cute and cozy inside. It was Taco Tuesday and a pop up night by the chef so we did not have the usual dinner menu. At first I was disappointed because I was not necessarily in the mood for Mexican and I had already decided on something from the menu online. We chose shrimp tacos and the brisket melt and decided to split them. We had our child with us so the option for her would be a cheese quesadilla. The food took a bit to come out - close to 40-45 minutes. When the food arrived our child had a veggie quesadilla instead of cheese. We could not wait the same amount of time for the correct order so we said we would feed her later. However the chef made one immediately. I appreciated the care they took with making the correction for us. Our food was fantastic! The tacos had a lot of shrimp and were so flavorful. The shrimp were also smaller so it made it easier to eat while ensuring shrimp in all the bites. I can't stand huge shrimp that fall out resulting in eating tortilla and garnish for the majority of bites. The brisket melt was so so good. My daughter (who can be limited in food repertoire) tried it and loved it. She then decided this was the best restaurant of our trip after those few bites. The ambiance is so cozy and warm. I loved the vibe and decor - almost like being in your Southern aunt's dining room. We will definitely plan to return when we head back to New Orleans to try the original menu or even another pop up if they have one. read more

Everything we tried, from the shrimp and grits to the spinach dip and pork chops, was incredibly tasty. The shrimp were perfectly grilled, the grits had just the right amount of salt, and the pork chop was so tender and easy to slice. What can I say about Café Amelie? How about the best, and I've tried them all (a slight exaggeration), Shrimp and Grits in all of Nola and beyond. Somehow Café Amelie elevates the humble grit to such lofty gastronomical heights that they should change the name grit to great. Shrimp & Great is befitting this 10th wonder of the world. I sat at the small bar in this beautiful rectangular dining room like you are in a comfortable parlor with artwork adorning the walls and started with The Old Man & The Sea cocktail made from aged rum, pineapple, passionfruit, basil, bitters. Couldn't have been more tasty that I nursed through the meal befitting my nickname given to me in Trinidad "Flo" because I can nurse a drink like Florence Nightingale better than anyone they had ever seen. I spoke to a fellow bar diner from Seattle who comes here not once but twice who had the duck that he loved. I tried to slow down to savor the blackened shrimp in the creamy grits and corn with bits of sausage but it went down easy. Although gluten intolerant and this large portion comes with beautiful blackened ample gulf shrimp, I'm not glutton intolerant so I said I would look at the dessert menu thinking there was probably nothing I could eat, I was thankfully wrong. A GF Basque crust less cheesecake with vanilla scented oranges and sea salt. What flavor! I now sneer at the mere mention, neh, thought of crust after eating this sublime cheesecake. We couldn't decide what we wanted to eat because the menu is small but mighty. So we asked our waiter if he could only eat one dish, what would he pick? Without any hesitation and faster than I would have thought possible, he responded, you have to get the pork chop. He then described every flavor of the dish as if he dreams about this pork chop regularly. Naturally, I then asked what appetizer he would pick, and his choice was resounding for the peppered shrimp. The shrimp has a kick to it, but not too overwhelming to taste the sweetness in the sauce. The pork chop ... What can I say about an entree that touches your soul with every bite? Just go try it. I don't know what else to say. We were too full for dessert but also after a meal like this, we had to try it. The bread pudding was the real standout for us. I'm uncomfortably full with no regrets. I started with the Caesar salad and I would say it was a 6/10 for Caesar salad's I've had, however I like to start meals with a salad so it served its purpose. I ordered the Amelie Benedict with smoked salmon and that was delicious! A large majority of the party ordered the gulf shrimp and grits and every single girl raved about how good it was and how they should have ordered the large size. Our service was amazing. Even with our large party, my wine came quickly, all of the girls who ordered apps and salads got it quickly with our main meal spaced out enough to enjoy the apps. Our table was kept clean and our server was always near by. The decor is absolutely breathtaking. It looks like a museum in there with the art, the dining tables, chairs, fireplace. They even had a patio outback where you can dine as well. The $25 catfish was tender and flaky, covered with a thick layer of black eyed peas, beans, with just the right amount of tomato sauce mixed with honey. Wife thought it tasted like bbq sauce. We sat in the courtyard, which was a cute area, although the heated lamps didn't really provide enough warmth and the flashing lights could be a bit distracting. However, we learned that the beverage turned out to be non-alcoholic, which was deceptive due to its inclusion under the cocktail menu. I had the french 75 which met my expectations and my friends really enjoyed their drinks as well.
