Dined in around 12:30PM for lunch, we were greeted by a sweet employee. It was hard to make a decision, all of the food on the menu sounded good. They have so many options to suit your dietary preferences such as dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian. They also promote organic and sustainable sourced food. I ordered the Shrimp Po Boy. It was served with brown rice and side salad with balsamic vinaigrette. It was pretty good, and you can taste the freshness of the food. I also ordered The One and Only Sweet Potato cupcake. They were just finishing up a batch when I asked if they were dairy free, the employee told me that they were NOT dairy free due to the cream cheese frosting, but she had some cupcakes that were not frosted and could sell me one! I'm so happy about this because I was able to enjoyed a little treats and this cupcake was DELICIOUS 100/10, definitely recommend. I got my other coworker the cupcake with cream cheese My coworker ordered the Tender Chicken Breast with the Chili Love flavoring and ordered it was a side of Mac and Cheese. She really enjoyed the chicken but not a big fan of the Mac and cheese. I was IN LOVE with the seating options, it was all outdoor, provided entirely with shade, a couple of fans to keep the area nice and cool, and lots and lots of plants. They played some tropical latin salsa/jazz music which created such a peaceful atmosphere. I loved how they served the meals in biodegradable containers/plates. They do encourage you to recycle anything recyclable. They also ask that you clean and wipe down the table (which I was glad to do.) So yummy and service was great! I felt like I was at a picnic with no flies! They have tables on a patio with fans and shading. A nice small menu ( imo that means it's good- bcuz they specialize) I got the chicken poboy and partner got a shrimp poboy and greens. This place is such a gem in an area of San Antonio that I would consider a food desert. It is one of the only restaurants in the area for healthy, nutritious, high quality food at an affordable price point, and I'm grateful to have it as a lunch option since I work nearby. At times when you get blackened salmon, it tends to be overwhelmingly salty. Not here! The house salad was fresh! No wilting at all! The chicken was almost as good as the salmon. Slightly under seasoned. The dish we were torn apart on was the Mac. It wasn't macaroni at all. Just penne pasta with some good cheese on top melted. I mean it was good, just not what we expected. Wow this place is so good! They are so accommodating to dietary restrictions like celiac. Although it seems like most people take their food to go, they have a nice patio area you can sit in if you clean up after yourself. Vegan chili and rice okay... raw spices that hadn't been cooked out. Mac and cheese were good. The greens were lacking flavor and spice. The sweet potato cupcake was the best thing we ate. Not to sweet but really moist and tasty. Service? You order at a window and you go back to grab the food when they call your name. Outdoor seating and they ask you to clear your table. I will always tip and don't mind doing so but this is probably hard for many to understand when service is self service on every level. The parking was difficult and it's summer so if you enjoy the heat then sitting out it's fine. I really do try to support local and I love vegetarian food but this was a miss for me. I was visiting San Antonio for the day and I needed something quick to eat before heading back to the Buena Vista Theater. A quick search on Yelp led me to Sweet Yams. This Black owned restaurant offers vegetarian and gluten free options so I was sold. I ordered the bbq salmon and brown rice online and within 7 mins, I got the alert that my food was ready. I drove over there and parked in their parking lot (it's limited). There's plenty of seating as you walk in, which is technically a covered patio so there's no AC. I went up to the window and picked up my food. It was a decent serving size for the price point ($16). I do wish they had fresh juices for purchase besides the ones offered in the program. Sweet Yams created a new outdoor seating area in the front of the restaurant?! Wow, ok I loved the nostalgia of the old outdoor seating out back (it's no longer available) with the feel of the garden, but this was very pleasant and quaint. We had the Turkey Chili, Garlic Shrimp and Salads. Y'all know how I feel about the Sweet Potato Muffins already. The delicious food, the retro music, the entire vibe...all speaks to their care and hospitality. My friend was beyond impressed! I could see her skepticism when we pulled up, but please don't judge this heavenly restaurant by the exterior. Holy crap. This place is AMAZEBALLS!! We are in town for the Rock-n-Roll half marathon and needed a gluten-friendly place for some good carb loading, and we totally hit the jackpot here. I stopped by Sweet Yams because I was in the area and wanted to pick up a healthy gluten-free lunch to take home. This establishment is a gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurant that is only a couple of miles from the downtown area. The parking is extremely limited to the point that only three or four cars can fit in the parking space. Inside Sweet Yams is not much larger than their parking lot. But it's a really cool place. Nothing magical, nothing fancy, nothing classy, but simple. It's the structure of a small wooden building with nettings covering the top and sides so it gives you the feel of outdoors, which I liked. I also liked the many plants and flowers that they have linking the structure. There's a walk-up window where you place your order which gives the surf club vibe with all of the stickers everywhere. I ordered the Bella & Onions Chicken and sat at one of their "window seats" to wait on the food to be cooked (I love that the food is not pre-made). The food portions were huge...probably could have eaten it for breakfast, lunch and dinner! The chicken breast was nice and tender but I could have used a little more seasoning. I loved the brown rice and mushrooms! The salad was very plain, greens and carrot slivers but the salad dressing was AMAZING! When I was diagnosed with Celiac in the early 2000s, this place was one of the first that had food I could eat. I felt less anxious and embarrassed about my new diagnosis. Shame on me for never giving it a proper review, for not having photographs to add, and, most importantly, everything I ordered is now in my belly (lol). I devoured the mac and cheese, the lemon chicken, the rice, and the salad. Not to be forgotten are the sweet potato cupcakes for dessert. I haven't been to Sweet Yams in 4 long years. Covid and life have caused me to be otherwise occupied. It's still the delightful hole in the wall it's always been! The mushrooms on their mushroom burger are amazing. They taste just like an excellent mushroom soup I had in England 6 years ago (and ate about 3 bowls of). It's not cheap, but there's a lot of heart put into the food. I'm very glad I came back. Give it a try! Also tip: it looks like their only seating is on an outdoor semi-covered patio. I've passed by this place before and made a mental note to check it out, but forgot about it.
