I found this place by typing in "soul food " ... YELP! This is definitely what my husband and I needed in our bellies. Ma graced us with her presence and wisdom. We felt right at home in Louisiana . If I had a bullhorn I would scream to everyone I know to go have a great ,stick to your stomach then grab a couch/bed meal ! from Ma Harper's Creole Kitchen. Sorry folks the aroma was so good that I didn't take pictures of the food. I will go back when I'm in town for sure for sure :)

I stopped in for some seafood gumbo . The service was very busy for a lunchtime crowd It's still my all time favorite for Cajun food

Got the fried fish and shrimp with red beans & rice. Everything was excellent, seasoned well, didn't even need sauce (although I always use hot sauce on my fish). It was quite when we walked in but the company of other customers and Ma herself made for enjoyable conversation.

LOVE YA MA! This place and the people that work there are FANTASTIC! Reminded me of home and more importantly remind my Cajun Lady of home. Ma will tell you like it is and serve you some food you will want to write home about. It truly is an experience wrapped up with some of the best Nawlins - Creole inspired food this side of the Sabine. You will not go wrong ordering anything on the menu. If you are lucky you would be able to chat with Ma and learn about her work on the F-15 & F-16. YES. This lady is truly amazing. She spent over 20 years working on those jets at Kelly AFB here in San Antonio. Ma will treat you like family..she is use to large family being one of 15. Thank you MA!

Don't walk- RUN TO THIS RESTAURANT! We just got back from a weeks vacation at Disney Florida. Our plane landed on a red eye and once we checked into our hotel; we started watching diners, drive-ins and dives. It so happened that Guy was in San Antonio for this episode. The food instantly sold us. Southern home cooked food. There was a small wait only because items are cooked to order. But boy oh boy was it delicious! Staff seemed great, they had the Dallas cowboys game on which was a plus. And we got to talk to Mrs. Harper herself. She was as kind as ever. I can see why and how she's had this business up and running for so long. I love a mom and pops restaurant! I'll definitely be back. Also the gumbo was the chefs kiss of the experience! I highly recommend!!! **I will mention the prices are a little higher than we expected. But the food was worth it, as was the hospitality! For 2 drinks, 2 gumbos, 2 entrees, a side of rice and beans and the peach cobbler- we spent just shy of $60! Again, totally worth it. Just wanted to share a heads up

    Gumbo and cornbread

Best gumbo in town and I know I'm from New Orleans!! Staff nice and knowledgeable. Only place I'll go in town for Gumbo.

When I came up to the place it wasn't a sit down place to eat, but that you have to order which was confusing as there were a lot of other restaurants within the small space. There was a guy there that was picking up wing and he stated that they were the best and big pieces. So he showed me how to order. And I place my order as it was Wednesday dollar day for wings so I order wings. I had the parmesan garlic, lemon pepper. Let me tell you they were so good, the wait was too long but worth the wait. It best to order online then go pick up. The restroom were locked so that is why I gave 4 and we weren't able to speak with no one. If you need any special thing or extras please write it I. The space provided because they don't give you anything but what you order no napkin just nothing else. Enjoy and hope the you didn't forget to order anything special or extra as you won't get it.

It's a multi-restaurant location but no one actually works the front desk or door. So you basically have to order your food online and they deliver it to a locker where you pick it up. Very strange. And made it pretty much impossible to get any thing extra like napkins, a fork, or whatever you might need for a meal. Good food... But definitely not recommended if you're looking for something as a sitdown place

Jenn was our server, and she was amazing very attentive, informative, and provided great service throughout our visit. The ambiance was a fun, lively vibe with music playing, and the restaurant was clean. The happy hour menu had a great selection, with everything from shrimp boils to cocktails. We started with the 1/2 dozen chargrilled oysters ($19.12) and the Smash'd Margarita Flight ($11 during happy hour). Chargrilled Oysters: 8.5/10 The oysters were cooked in garlic butter and Parmesan and served with crispy toast. The toast was definitely a highlight for me it added such a good texture and paired really well with the oysters. I would absolutely order these again! Smash'd Margarita Flight: (9/10) This was a fun way to get a taste of the different margaritas they offer. The prickly pear was my favorite of the flight! Shrimp Boil: (10/10) For our main meal, we ordered the shrimp boil from the happy hour menu and added a few extras. I loved how customizable the boils were. They have a great variety of add-ons, from broccoli to ramen noodles, and you can also choose your seasoning and spice level. Overall, we had a great experience. Good food, a fun atmosphere, plenty of options, and great service from Jenn. We'll definitely be back and those chargrilled oysters will be making another appearance at the table! I don't recall my order being presented almost as a to-go order when I visited before so receiving a plate with plastic fork/spoon, wrapped food, and styrofoam containers isn't very appetizing. All of this is a far cry from the presentation shown in their newspaper write-up. So, ok...I'll deal with the off putting presentation...what about the star of the show...brisket? The brisket served to me was the most unappetizing, dry, and lukewarm excuse for brisket that I've had in a long time. It was terrible. It reminded me of the old Rodney Daingerfield joke about eating beef where he could see where the jockey was hitting it. The turkey was lukewarm but tasted good. The sides were ok but should never overshadow the main...and yet, they did. I bought a plate that cost over $20 and got it in styrofoam, with bad brisket, and a "we could care less" attitude from staff. It's my last trip to Urban Smoke.
