Swerve Salon sucked me in with a first-time customer deal (on their website) and then swept me away by offering me wine during my appointment. How is that not a win?! The people working at Swerve are friendly and proficient in their jobs. I enjoy going there and have referred others to go also. I've seen three different stylists and all of them have done a good job with my curly hair. There has only been one mediocre blow-out and that was because they didn't schedule enough time and the stylist was rushing to stay on time with her appointments. Scheduling has been a bit difficult since they aren't open on Sundays. I also have to make a point of getting cash ahead of time because they don't put tips on credit cards. read more

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Swerve!! I've been getting my hair done here for a few years and I've moved twice (further and further from the salon) but I have yet to find a salon I love as much as this place. While all of the staff and stylists here are amazing, I'm giving an extra special shout out to my girl Kayla! She's been AWESOME since I started seeing her regularly. I like to think I have pretty great hair so I don't trust just anyone with it, especially through an intense color and texture change like I'm going through now. Kayla has been great with communicating honestly with me about what's possible and the safest, most effective way to get there. I see her about every 5-6 weeks and she's so fun to chat with, knows what she's doing, and is incredibly professional. Can't wait for my next appointment! Also, they do more than just hair. Updated review: After posting my review about Swerve Salon, I was contacted by the salon manager. She was very understanding and offered her apologies. I am very thankful for this. As I mentioned it to her on the phone, I have no doubt that each one of the hairdressers are good at what they do. The problem was not the final look, but the fact that none of them kept track of the color used for my hair. My initial review: My first experience was so great that I decided to come back 3 more times. Unfortunately, the following times I noticed that everyone kept on asking me about what color to use. I know most people post negative review here and if this was Monday I probably would have. The story starts with me making a color appointment earlier in the week at this salon and me ultimately walking out with a color I didn't ask for or want. I was extremely unhappy and trying to deal with it for a day I knew that I had to get it fixed. I called the salon and the receptionist who handled my call was fantastic. She obviously knew I was upset and made sure this issue was taken care of. I was paired with Elle and her assistant. They took the time to listen to my concerns and my wants then just trying to fix it. My hair has been processed a lot these last few months so they took the most gentle approach to fix it. From the previous attempts there was a bit of reversal we had to do and we didn't nail it the first time but we got it the third try. Although it sounds like quite a process, when reversing colors is a bit of a Pandora's box. Ultimately I left with my desired hair color and feel a thousand times better. Elle was sweet and patient from the moment I walked in to the moment I left. A true professional. It's difficult for a stylist to be working with a client that walks in unhappy. It's an absolute uphill battle. I'd like to personally thank Elle and the team at Swerve for making me a happy guy. read more

This review is for the spa, more specifically the 60 minute facial I received via Groupon. Morgan was my gal, very sweet, patient and thorough. After checking in at the front desk I was escorted to the back of the salon to the spa. The room is dimly lit, light music playing and I didn't wait long until Morgan asked me to come into the room. We had a quick chat about what my skin concerns were and she said we would address them later. I popped on a comfy robe that fit snuggly around my chest and scooted under the covers. My face was met with gentle massages, steam, extractions that weren't too painful, more massages, moisture and full on goodness. The experience as a whole was peaceful and she really did get my skin feeling smooth and healthy. There were some parts that could have been improved: I get cold very easy so at some points of the facial I was freezing, especially when they run off the steam. I've experienced heated pressure boots before - so this would have been a nice way to keep me warm. I understand that usually Estheticians keep pretty mum throughout to maintain that level of serenity, but i'm a talker and I would have liked to know what was happening. Such as what products were being applied and why. We didn't exactly address my concerns but I had some other problem areas that were so I left very happy! read more

I was really reluctant to post this review because I really liked my haircut the day I got it. McKenzie was extremely friendly and professional, and she blow-dried and styled my hair really well so I didn't notice any of the flaws. However, from the day after and every day since then, my hair has not been great. I've noticed that the cut is really uneven and spotty. I asked for layers, but it's basically like a blunt cut. Moreover, my hair in the front is actually longer than my hair in the back--it's not even a straight cut. There's just a lot of uneven parts and so the overall shape doesn't flow well. I'm really not picky when it comes to haircuts, but I'm really disappointed in this one. I will say that the office was really welcoming and warm -- but personally, none of that matters if the haircut isn't good. Unfortunately, I would avoid this place in the future. read more

Lindsay R. is my absolute favorite. I used to avoid salons like the plague after a few bad experiences- I only let my neighbor cut my hair. I came to Lindsay earlier on in her training after another salon completely damaged my hair with the wrong colors (absolutely petrified to do anything else with it). She was comforting, communicative, clear and bubbly! She eased my mind, gave me a beautiful haircut with layers that I LOVE and completely saved my hair. The best thing is that she is attentive and listens- her goal is to give you exactly what you want. She does not rush into it. After a few times of being timid and walking her through step by step, I trust her enough to just walk in and ask her to make my hair look good- she's open to do whatever she pleases with it. I brought my good friend to her a few months later and she did a wonderful job on his hair cut as well (he went shorter than he ever has and loved it). 12/10 recommend! She is kind, caring and does beautiful work. She's the perfect person to go to for anything from a regular trim to a scary/drastic change! Love her to death, I specifically plan my hair appointments now so that I can see her whenever I'm passing through Chicago. :) AND. That was all during her TRAINING. She's got talent. read more

I have been seeing Mallory at Swerve for nearly 4 years (!!!), so she has seen me through all kinds of life events! I went to Swerve for my wedding hair and makeup, and I recommend Mallory to all of my friends. She always greets me with a cheerful smile and a heavy pour of white wine, and her work is consistently perfect. I have thick, curly, dry hair that struggles to retain color, and she always knows exactly what to do to make it behave! Not seeing Mallory & Team Swerve for two months during the stay at home order was tough (both because life was generally terrible and because my grays were POPPING), so the return to the salon was so full of emotion. The team was SO respectful and cautious. They are limiting the number of guests, taking temps, and requiring masks and hand sanitizer for guests and employees. I felt 100% safe and cared for the entire time. I don't even care that they can't offer blowouts - the color and cut and sense of normalcy and pampering were totally worth leaving with a damp head! Obsessed!! I went to Swerve to get a spray tan for a wedding. Every person I encountered from the front desk to the spray tan technician was extremely friendly and helpful! The owners were even walking around and engaging with customers which made me feel confident about the quality of service at this salon! I am from the far west suburbs but was in the city for work. I needed a hair cut and came across this place Swerve Salon and Spa. I thought to check this place out. First impressions are always important and they greeted me as soon as I walked in. They offered coffee which is a nice thing to do for your customers while they wait. My hairdresser was Sierra. She took the time to ask exactly what I wanted for color and style. This was the most thorough consultation I have ever had and am soo impressed. The color is amazing and she really gave me a wonderful cut and style. found this salon through GP, pretty good deals for wax and facial so why not? I usually drive out to wicker park but my commute doesn't take me through there any more and Old Town is pretty convenient for me. First off the salon is pretty big and you will be greeted by the receptionist at the front desk. I have read the other reviews and I think the service can be hit or miss. I waited a bit to check in but once I signed their cancellation policy (for new clients) I was escorted to the spa area. The spa area is pretty nice, dimly lit with four leather chairs and some magazines to browse. I think there are only 2-3 treatment room so it's not crowded at any time . Water was available, not much else. First Service was Brazilian wax with Jess and it was great as far as waxing goes! not painful at all and able to get the job done with a reasonable amount of attempts. She even went in with a pair of tweezers to make sure there wasn't anything missed. Onward to my facial. I booked the 60min GP (in retrospect I regret not getting the 90min) and was greeted warmly by Morgan. Nice spacious, comfortable room, soothing music (think waves and bells) we spoke briefly about areas of concern and purpose of visit today, i knew my facial was going to be great when she started with lavender oil on the palms of her hands and she held her hand over my face and had me breathe in and out deeply for 3 counts. I fell asleep and didnt wake up until she started on the extractions which was not uncomfortable at all. light massage on the arms, neck and shoulder blades. soft sell on products and a voucher to use on the next visit. face was super smooth and clear after my visit and even for the days following my treatment. CONS: not their fault and I get that they have to pay rent, overhead,wages etc but i WISH their pricing was closer to the GP deal then I could justify monthly treatments! I came in for a haircut a day before leaving the country; The stylist cut my hair in a way I did not like and I said so, but she said she didn't have time to fix it and that I should "wear it for a few days and see if I like it." I still did not like the haircut after a few days but was out of town and could not contact the salon. I contacted them when I returned a month later but amanagement said that their policy was 2 weeks (even though the stylist had known I would be out of town at that time) and that they would not do anything about it. I have been going to Swerve Salon since they opened and I realized that sometimes you don't write reviews for those places you really love! Laura one of the owners does my cut and color and I have always left loving my hair. They have created a wonderful environment and have a terrific group of stylists. It can be fun (grab a glass of wine) or more relaxing and spa like depending on your mood. Over the years I have recommended the salon to a number of people and everyone has stayed on as a client. I also really like their selection of products which includes hair and skin care. They often sell little extras like cute hair ties, jewelry and sun glasses so even if you are not getting a service it is worth it to stop in to shop. read more

I've been debating writing this review for a few weeks because overall, I had such a great experience. The staff couldn't have been nicer, and being my first time they made me feel so comfortable. I decided to do a blunt chop and go for longer bob. My stylist told me she loved the look and I felt confident about my decision. After the initial cut, it looked AMAZING and just what I wanted. She then suggested some layers which I agreed to. Unfortunately, some layers turned into a lot. And then, with no warning, she thinned my hair out soooo much. I have (or should I say had) thick hair that I LOVE, and now my hair is extremely thin and it's honestly disappointing. Franky, I hate the cut when I wear it straight which is 95% of the time because of the amount of extremely short layers and my newfound thin hair (that I didn't ask for). I wish I could say I would go back, but I honestly don't know. My advice, have more communication with your client before you make a drastic change to their hair. Also, cash tips only are a huge hassle. Bring cash with you or be prepared to have to use an ATM with a charge. read more

Elle is amazing and a LIFE SAVER! I made the terrible decision to dye my hair blue (from a box) two weeks before being in a wedding and going back to work. It was supposed to wash out in 4-10 shampoos but after 13 washes I was still left with a weird green that would not budge. I was able to get an appointment in two days and Elle was able to lift a lot of the color and find a color mix that canceled out the green while getting me very close to my natural color. And I got a great cut too! The whole situation definitely showed her depth of knowledge about color and she was a delight to spend a 3 hour appointment with. I've been to Swerve two previous times for cuts with a stylist who no longer works there, but all of my interactions with the staff have been incredibly positive. Swerve is a salon that tailors to it's male clientle with as much enthusiasm and excitement as it's female clients. I have seen Laura three times since a good friend recommended the salon and I can't imagine going anywhere else. Also it is refreshing how thorough Laura is when asking how you would like your hair cut/trimmed/etc. In past experiences at other salons (nearby) I have been cut off when explaining what I wanted if I was even asked at all. I expected it to be very "Old Town" upscale, but it was warm/inviting, and the stylists all seemed very down to earth..and...umm...human. Nice touch! I hate to write this review.... just really hate to write this but my recent experiences with Swerve Salon have been so bad it deserves an update. I started with this salon many many years ago and have seen the business build. I have been an evangelist telling everyone that compliments me on my hair color or cut to go see Jenn at Swerve. Boy do I have egg on my face!!! This place started out great. Great talent, great service, no complaints. But as this salon grew there were changes. The stylist I regularly go to (Jenn) is top notch, very talented. The problem is that she isn't the one always working on me. She has an assistant. The assistant is always early in their training (maybe still in school or right out of school I'm not sure). And my stylist is basically training the assistant on the job... using me as the teaching tool. This just started a couple years ago and the assistant regularly changes. If her assistant is good, it is usually fine. But the assistant does things like checks to see if my hair is fully lightened, tones my hair color, and other things that I would feel way more comfortable having my very talented and very expensive stylist do. Sometimes it hasn't come out well. Maybe this isn't the case if you go to a stylist that isn't as busy. But Jenn is always super booked and is usually taking two clients at one time. So I guess she needs the assistant. I have been very patient with this whole situation and really haven't cared if it takes longer or if they don't get my color exactly right. I'm pretty low key about these things and take it in stride. But the thing that really irks me is that I'm still paying full price as if I were getting the full attention of my stylist!! I don't even get a say in it!! I have never once been asked if am comfortable letting the assistant do parts of my service. Which frankly sometimes I am not. On top of that, I have recently had problems with the management and admin process. The salon keeps your credit card on file and charges you 1/2 of the cost of services if you don't show up for a confirmed appointment. I understand why this is done and it makes sense. My problem is that they don't really confirm the appointment. They call ONCE and leave you a message if you get voicemail. After many years of reliably showing up for appointments I missed one. I didn't even realized I had missed it until way after the fact. And when I showed up for my next appointment they charged me an extra $75. I was not a happy camper, but whatever... I understand the policy. At that first missed appointment I asked that they actually confirm the appointment. Like, talk to me. Or email with me, or text me. The answer was No. I spoke with the manager and owner and their software doesn't support email or text and they don't think it it practical to actually talk to someone before considering an appointment confirmed. Okay, noted... I will need to be more vigilant about checking voicemails left by the salon. Besides it was anomaly that would probably never happen again. Skip to a couple months later and I started sharing my calendar with my co-workers and removed my salon appointments. I thought I moved it to another calendar, but apparently I screwed it up. Doah!! So I missed another appointment and they charged me another $75. Okay, ouch but I knew better that is my fault. The kicker is that after year and years of religiously reliable appointments now they tell me they won't book my appointments in advance any longer. Are you kidding me!?!?! I guess this salon has grown so much and so big that they don't need the reliable long-term customers that helped them build their business or to actually provide the high-quality level of service that they certainly charge for. $$$$$ Bummer read more

Don't come here with a Groupon! They definitely treat their Groupon customers second rate. I had a normal, valid appointment time but got bumped once they found out I had a Groupon. I waited 30 min after my appointment time to get in. The stylist was nice but sat me in a corner to wait 45 min for my highlights to set instead of under a dryer while she took another customer. I felt forgotten about and had to get up and search for my stylist who never came back to check on me. I told her my parking meter was about to run out and instead of hurrying she left again to finish the other customer. After all that my total for just a cut and partial highlights was still $166 after my $50 Groupon! I felt like crying when I finally got to my car next to the expired meter. Swerve Salon's new space is beautifully decorated - and he service is top notch! I was referred by a friend for a blowout, and they give you 25% off retail as a first-time client, which is nice. When I arrived, they treated me warmly and offered to take my coat. My stylist Jackie immediately offered me a choice of water, coffee, or wine (bonus points for offering free booze!), and took me over to the station. She gave me some great suggestions to help in my search for a new shampoo and conditioner, and my hair felt lighter than air when she was done with it - that's saying something since I have extremely heavy, curly/wavy hair. 10/10 - would definitely come back here! read more
