Two coworkers of mine have been seeing Dana at Swerve for a while, so I decided to give her a try. Turns out, she is the stylist I've been searching for after living in Chicago for 3 years! The thing I really love about Dana is that she truly listens to what you ask for and genuinely wants to be sure you love your hair before you leave the salon. Overall, I had a great experience. The salon is very clean and the staff are all very nice and attentive. You get a complimentary glass of beer or wine (or coffee/tea/water) while you get your hair done, which I love. It's the little things! As a first time client, I also received a little goody bag that included a 25% off coupon for all products I purchased that day, so I loaded up on makeup (they just launched their own line)--the products are great and VERY reasonably priced. Huge Review for Stephanie Pearson: She is the best hairstylist so Im writing this review for her! This salon is listed as a great salon for Redkin if you go to Redkins website.. that is how I started to initially go to Swerve after moving here to Chicago a little over a year ago. My hair is pretty high maintenance and I had to go to the best ha. So after the Redkin site recommended this salon, I was paired with Stephanie and she has been my girl ever since. I love her. She gets my style, and I think I went from Dark brown to Blonde.. back to brown (bc I always like to change my look!) and she has taken such good care of my hair. And Ive always loved the color. A couple years ago, I decided to dye my hair brown...from the box. The first one was Feria. It turned my hair pink, so I decided to put another box on it, and go dark, dark brown. This was a complete turnaround from the blonde I've known all my life. 6 months go by, I decide I don't want to be a brownie anymore. I go into Walgreens, find a box that promises to deliver exactly what I want: to strip my haircolor off. I should have known by the circa 1975 pictures on the box that this was not going to go well. I managed to get it a little lighter and thought it would be okay to put the blonde back on top of my lighter brown hair. Pink hair again. Panic set in. There was no way I was going to go to work with pink hair and have my coworkers make fun of me until the end of time, so I called in a personal day. I then called my now roommate and she told me to call Amy (she worked at Salon 1800 at the time.) I had only met Amy once. She was so nice and confused as to why I did what I did, in the order I did. She was able to get by hair back to the blonde that I knew and loved. She then lectured me on how Great Clips is bad, drugstore shampoo is horrible, etc. It was all blah blah to my ears. She then took the sheers and snipped at my fried ends, cleaning up the disaster that was 2 hours prior. By the time I was through, I looked like an entirely different person. I told her I would never go back to Great Clips again, and I didn't. (It took a while for me to accept Redken as my lord and savior.) Since then, she has opened up her own salon above Bank of America on Wells in the middle of Old Town. I don't go as often as she'd like me to, but I haven't strayed since that dreadful day. read more

As most of you know, I am a huge supporter of Swerve. I've been getting my hair done by Amy for years. Well she finally convinced me to get a facial and massage by Gwen. All I can say, is 'WHY DIDN'T I DO IT EARLIER!?!' Gwen is the newest addition to Swerve. Not only does she give the most glorious facials and massages, she also does manicures, make-up application, and waxing. She greeted me with a smile and eased my apprehensions as a 'facial virgin'. She explained the process to me, and left the room so I could get all warm and comfy under the blankets of the massage table. She then just asked me some brief questions about my beauty routine so she could have a better idea of what treatments to use. She started out with a shoulder and back massages that had me melting into the table.. Actually I think I was snoring at some point, that's how relaxed I was. She worked out all any and all tension I had. After I flipped over, she started on my facial. Lots of moisturizing, massaging, rubbing, more moisturizing. Such a great technique that was both soft at times and firm when it was needed. The steamer helped release all the nasty toxins in my body and made me feel even more warm and toasty. She finished up with looking at my skin under the 'magic lamp'. Which showed her all the sun damage I had on my face from years of using suntan oil, tanning beds, and working as a lifeguard for 10 years. Wasn't a pretty picture, but she made sure to ease my worries. Sunscreen is my new best friend! She used this fizzy stuff on my nose, which I called 'pop rocks for your face', to get rid of those nasty blackheads. Worked those suckers right out! While I sat with a hot towel on my face and chest, she gave me a foot massage. Ooohhhh weeeee!! It was delightful. Once again, well needed! After a full hour and half, I was done and felt like a big noodle. It was such a well needed treatment for myself, and I will be passing her information along to everyone. Valentines Day is just around the corner. Get over to Swerve and buy your sweetie a facial by Gwen! Another added bonus is they have XM-Sirius Radio. So if harpy water flowing spa jams don't do it for you, you can choose your own music! I am so glad I had this service done, and hope that in the new year, even though times are tough, everyone takes some time to pamper themselves. You deserve it! read more

This is a generous, round up, 4 stars as opposed to 3. Based solely on the artistic talents of Megan, whom is a 5 star stylist. Megan knows color. I have been getting my hair done since I was 12. I tell her what I want to see and it's done to perfection. Very few stylists can take a vision and bring it to life. Also perfect- every haircut. I have been to salons where you wait 2 hours for those Hollywood Red Carpet dos. Megan makes you look like walking on the red carpet in a fraction of the time. And my locks look fantastic for weeks to come! Love my hair, love my stylist. The bad 1.5 stars- front desk staff. I have consistently NOT been offered a beverage on every visit. (I do eventually get one, by the wonderful Megan). The purpose of offering a water, coffee, is to make me feel welcome upon first point of contact. I'm lucky I get a "hello" half the time! On my most recent visit, I received my confirmation call, to be told I would be seeing a different stylist, same day and time. Want to make a girl lose her shiznit?! Tell her the appointment booked MONTHS in advance for her precious hair is now with someone different. (I eventually got my right, booked in advanced appointment with Megan). But not after a mini panic attack. Go to Swerve for Megan. You may want to bring your own water though. read more

Elle is amazing and a LIFE SAVER! I made the terrible decision to dye my hair blue (from a box) two weeks before being in a wedding and going back to work. It was supposed to wash out in 4-10 shampoos but after 13 washes I was still left with a weird green that would not budge. I was able to get an appointment in two days and Elle was able to lift a lot of the color and find a color mix that canceled out the green while getting me very close to my natural color. And I got a great cut too! The whole situation definitely showed her depth of knowledge about color and she was a delight to spend a 3 hour appointment with. I've been to Swerve two previous times for cuts with a stylist who no longer works there, but all of my interactions with the staff have been incredibly positive. The prices are a little steep but you definitely get what you pay for. Would absolutely recommend to a friend! read more

I love coming here. I found my stylist for Chicago! I came in for a basic cute back in the day and interviewed Jennifer Romano. She listened to what I wanted and what I needed. I came back for another cut, but a style cut. Went with the bang route and loved while it lasted. I had spoke about going extreme and she explained that with my face I can pull off a lot of styles. When I came in to cut off 9 inches, Jennifer took care of me. explained what was going to happen reassured me that I will look great and saw that I was starting to freaked-out. She had a glass of wine brought over to me ASAP. I felt better just after and made my time even better. I have to be honest, it has been several years since I have been here. I only stopped going since I moved to the suburbs and stopped working in the city. BUT, this salon is wonderful. They really know what they are doing. I used to go to Laura (one of the owners). She is phenomenal with color. I started going to Laura when I lived in Missouri. I was coming to visit my boyfriend and had dyed my hair from a box for the first time. My mom took one look at me and told me I had to get my hair fixed in Chicago. My sister had been coming to Swerve and got me an appointment. I was so impressed, for about a year I scheduled my appointments for when I was in town. I continued coming here when I moved to the city. Laura always took great care of me and did a fantastic job. Once I was there when they received new makeup. She had someone give me a free makeover while my color was setting. Great customer service and extremely talented staff. I hope they are still doing well. Swerve Salon's new space is beautifully decorated - and he service is top notch! I was referred by a friend for a blowout, and they give you 25% off retail as a first-time client, which is nice. When I arrived, they treated me warmly and offered to take my coat. My stylist Jackie immediately offered me a choice of water, coffee, or wine (bonus points for offering free booze!), and took me over to the station. She gave me some great suggestions to help in my search for a new shampoo and conditioner, and my hair felt lighter than air when she was done with it - that's saying something since I have extremely heavy, curly/wavy hair. 10/10 - would definitely come back here! read more

I moved to Chicago a year and a half ago, and have been coming to Swerve since then even though it's a bit out of the way for me. I've been seeing Mallory more recently, and she is a really gifted stylist as well as a pleasure to be around. She's managed to do really fun things with my hair color and cut even though I have relatively boring "straight and long" requirements. I was in town for a wedding and needed a last-minute style. I asked a friend for a nearby salon, and he contacted a friend of his. She immediately recommended Swerve. On this recommendation, I called and asked if they could take me for an appointment. They not only found a way to get me an appointment, they made sure that it gave me plenty of time to get ready for the wedding. Melissa was my stylist; she was incredible. Love love love this salon! I tend to be a 'salon-jumper' because as soon as one incident occurs that makes me uncomfortable - whether its poor styling, the environment, awkward conversation - I decide to try someone new. I've been going to Courtney P. at Swerve for the last 6 months and doubt that I will be looking for anyone else any time soon (unless forced to of course!). The entire staff at Swerve is helpful and friendly - but not that over-the-top friendly that creeps you out! I've been caught in a number of conversations with a group of the staffers and clientele where I felt like I was sitting around in my living room with friends talking - this place is just that comfortable. In terms of coloring and styling, Courtney is fantastic and not only listens to what I want but consults the other stylists to be sure that her ideas match up. She's very honest in terms of what will work and what won't (blonde to brunette in one coloring treatment?! yeah right) and I always leave happy - and more importantly - stay happy with the results throughout the following weeks. They also aren't product pushers - which is a big pet peeve of mine...but they do have some great deals on products that I can't resist! I truly look forward to my visits to Swerve, which says a lot - I highly recommend it! read more

I started going to Jenn about 6 years ago after I moved to the city and it was the best decision I have made. This review is for Giovanni, who is currently serving as an apprentice at Swerve. A friend referred me to him because, as an apprentice, he is offering his services (a cut and highlights for me) at a discounted rate. It was too good to pass up and I knew that the owner, Laura, would make sure everything was kosher before I left. I can't even begin to describe how happy I am today after leaving Swerve. Giovanni is absolutely adorable yet very professional. His consult with me was great and he even picked out the same picture from the web that I did after we discussed what I was looking for. When we were done, I looked just as I hoped I would. After not having any color in my hair for five years, Giovanni helped transition me into something I was comfortable with but nothing too flashy or required too much upkeep - just as I had asked. And since I'm growing out my hair, he gave me a wonderful cut that kept my length but still looked fresh and light when I left. I'll be sad when he gets hired, officially, because his rates will go up but Giovanni is absolutely deserving of a spot on the floor at any salon. He'll be an excellent stylist/colorist and has made me a convert to Swerve. Also, I should mention, Laura DID go through my hair at the end just to check his work and make some minor changes. I moved to Chicago about a year and a half ago, and one of my first priorities was to find someone to do my hair that I could trust to do what I wanted - not what they thought would look good! My friend pointed me to Dana and I have been a loyal customer ever since! I've had a lot of different stylists over my years of moving across the country and Dana is seriously the best I've ever been to! She listens to what you want and will give her opinion if you ask for it. I transitioned my hair from light brown with blonde highlights to very dark brown hair. I was nervous, but really wanted to make the change. She talked me through all the steps and let me know how long it would take to get it fully brown without damaging my hair. The color she chose was SO amazing and I still get compliments on it to this day! I have complete confidence in Dana. Only thing that is annoying is you have to tip in cash - which I never have - but it's worth it. Also, you get a beer/glass of wine! Definitely go see Dana - you won't be disappointed! read more

So, I have very mixed feelings about my experience here. First of all, its pretty pricey. I had highlights a cut and some "special conditioner" (that i couldnt even notice made my hair any softer or healthier). I absolutely LOVED the highlights!!! Jennifer did them and they looked awesome! I brought in a pic to help and she def did a great job. Here is what i have a major issue with...the cut. When I say TRIM i mean I would like a TRIM. At the most one would think that a trim would consist of MAYBE about 2-3 inches...at the most. She suggested an inch and I said, "maybe a little less...but I really need it thinned out." About 7 inches later...my hair was WAY too short and not thinned out at all. On top of this, she layered it. I believe I even told her about my fear of going to new stylists bc they seem to chop off my hair. Apparently she wasnt listening... So, great color...awful cut. This review is way overdue. I walked into Swerve one day three years ago in desperate need of a haircut. I had recently moved to Chicago from San Francisco and had no idea where to go. Thanks to the grace of god, there had been a cancellation and Swerve could squeeze me in. I have been going, with gusto, ever since. Can I just rave about Stacy for a second? The first haircut she gave me was exactly what I wanted, as was the second, and the third, and whatever number we are on now... It doesn't matter what picture I bring in...Blake Lively's bombshell locks, Gwenyth Paltrow's cute bob, she can replicate it. If there is something that may not work for my hair type she will tell me why and how we can work around it. She is also a color goddess; my hair is a glowing strawberry blonde. To top it off, she is upbeat and easy to talk to and never does a shoddy job on blowdrying my thick mane into submission. But the thing that really makes her a professional is that I never leave without learning some new trick about how to style my hair. As a result, I can go home and make my hair look exactly like it does after I leave the salon...if I have the time, that is. Amazing. Now it's time to rave about Gwen. I have been seeing her since she started at Swerve for all of my bikini and eyebrow waxes. She also tints my eyebrows and eyelashes, and I got one, AMAZING, facial from her. The thing that I like best about Gwen is that she, like Stacy, is a true professional. She takes the time to make sure that the job is done correctly. We are not talking about quickly and painfully pulling hair out of your body. She does her job with an attention to detail. That is all I ask from an aesthetician. Gwen is also friendly and customer focused, thank god. There is nothing worse than getting a bikini wax from someone who is unfriendly and brusque. Finally, although I don't know the owners, I would just like to compliment them on the excellent salon they have created. The atmosphere is loft-like, yet cozy. The people who work there are friendly professionals. They encourage their employees to excel in their careers and make sure they are constantly learning new tricks of the trade. I was referred to Caitlyn by my roommate who has been urging me to go and give her a try. I'm very particular about who I let color my hair, but after getting a HORRIBLE bleach job from my usual stylist at a different salon, I took my roommates advice- and I couldn't be more pleased. I texted Caitlyn in a panic & she immediately responded and was able to get me in the next day. Her level of professionalism and care was outstanding. She made me feel so comfortable & talked through every step of the way through the correction. I will note that she is still training at the salon, which is even more impressive for how great of a job she did. I went from this awful platinum white bleach job to a warm, natural bright blonde. Honestly the best consult/service I have received by a stylist. The salon itself is beautiful! Everything is so clean, it makes you feel really good knowing that you are being taken care of by people who respect their workplace. I highly recommend this salon, & Caitlyn! The first time I made an appointment with Geo at the old location it was pretty cool. I wanted the sides of my head shaved with some graphics and he did some generic waves and a circle thing in it, but it looked pretty okay. I came in for a trim up a while later to see Geo again. The salon had moved by now and it felt like the prices moved a little with it. I asked for a trim/refresh and I left with an ACTUAL MULLET. I didn't realize it until I got home. All of a sudden I was like "wait, did I just pay $47 for a "trim" plus $10-$15 for a tip and come home with a fucking mullet?!" But it was too late. My partner shaved up my head around the sides again and evened out the lines and I went about my life. But I keep getting emails from the salon with "discounts" on their services- services I wouldn't pay for even if they weren't stupidly overpriced. I felt kind of used, as if he could tell I wasn't like the girls who get Brazilian blowouts and wax applied to various places, so he knew there wasn't much more in my haircut beyond tip- I wasn't going to be up sold. (I do my own color and I'm better than anyone I've met, professional or otherwise). And he spent practically no time with me the second visit- hell, maybe he didn't have time to notice the mullet (even though there were no other customers getting cuts around, maybe just in the back rooms getting other things?!). Disappointed that after coming here for over two years that I received such poor service. Sadly the awesome stylist that I used to go to left a few months back, but was great about referring me to another stylist. Unfortunately upon arrival to my appointment this evening I was notified that this stylist left as well. No call, no email no text from Swerve. The receptionist shared that my appointment had been rescheduled (no call, text or email) and then cancelled. They even asked if I cancelled the appointment. I felt bad for the girl at the desk because it was likely not her fault, but unfortunately had to deliver this news. I have always been very pleased with the service and have loved my hair every time that I have left and have referred friends to this salon, but today was absolutely unacceptable. Went there for the first time this past Thursday and had a great experience. My stylist was Emma and she was so cute; actually all the girls were! It was nice to seem them dressed in their own clothes, showing their own personality. I get so nervous before I meet my new stylist - that they are going to walk out and have a pink mohawk or something crazy. But emma was cute and pretty and very nice! She gave me a great cut ($45) and was very personable and they are one of the few salons around that don't use aveda products (which is a huge plus for me because I think it smells bad and so strong!) One complaint...they offer you all sorts of drinks while your waiting, but there are no magazines in the waiting area. But when you walk by the chairs, there they all are. Anyways - it is a great salon and I will be a returning customer. read more

I liked my haircut, I liked Stacey, but I'm a complete whore for manners, so I would rave about this place just because Stacey sent me a nice, handwritten thank-you note after my first visit. If you need more from a salon than proper etiquette, I wasn't disappointed. I'm pretty lazy about haircuts and clueless about what to do with my hair on a daily basis, and I'm always worried stylists are going to judge me for it. But Stacey was completely nice and even showed me how to blow-dry my cut. She did push the products a little, but nothing too annoying and I didn't feel pressured to buy anything. I didn't give it five stars because it's a little more than I like to pay for haircuts, but I just don't like to spend a lot on my hair. It's probably average for Chicago. And Swerve and Stacey are definitely nice enough to make it worth it for me to go back. read more

Well, well. A couple of weeks before I leave the city after 4 years and I find Mallory. She blew away the cuts my long-time stylist was giving me at a high end salon on Hubbard. I went in with overgrown long layers and side swept bangs. My standard styling is to hot roll and go for big time volume in a Bardot spin on bed head . The length was well past my shoulder blades. I requested to keep as much length as possible, shaping of the layers and special attention to volume at the crown. Insane. Mallory did a phenomenal job. Great price for a cut at $60ish. I thought I was committing highway robbery. On top of that she is smart, stylish and a great conversationalist. I'll be visiting her each time I come to the city. read more

I've Lived in Chicago for over a year and a half so needless to say I've had my fair share of Haircuts from some highly recommended salons. However- I still never got that perfect cut or service and was on to another try when I heard about Swerve. I was recommended to Melissa and was easily given a couple open available apts to fit my schedule. They gave me a two day courtesy call which is great because like most salons they do have a 24 hour cancelation policy. On the day of the appointment about an hour before they gave me a call letting me know Melissa had a cancellation and If could come as soon as I was ready- which was fantastic bc I like a short walk away. When arriving I was greeted and giving a choice of Wine, soda or water. Now onto the cut- or in my opinion a Mini make over- not only did she ask me what I liked about my hair, not like- wanted, not wanted- she then gave me her HONEST opinion and told me exactly what she was going to do before she cut. After several trial and errors in trying to find a salon here in Chicago, I finally stumbled upon Swerve at the recommendation of a friend. I lucked into Emma, and I've been seeing her religiously ever since. While the receptionist is usually pretty cold, Emma is a bubble of energy and really friendly (while not being over the top). I was relieved that she has a natural, pretty look (not super trendy) and felt comfortable trusting her with my cut. After a cut or two, I let Emma chop my long hair to shoulder length. She gave me a perfect cut, great layers, and really listened to me about how I style my hair at home (I'm low-maitenence). While they DO put a lot of product in your hair, my hair always looks fantastic after I wash and style it myself at home. Kudos for also just adding a pedicure area to the salon and some spa services. Also great location in Old Town, just a few blocks from the brown line. Knocking it down to a-ok since it's priced a little on my higher end, the receptionist can leave a damper on your visit right as you leave, and you can't leave your tip on your credit card - cash tips only. read more

I have NEVER had so many compliments on my hair after a cut and color! I came in after I was not able to make an appointment I had with my usual salon and neeeeeeded to get my hair done for a wedding the next weekend. The salon itself is very comfortable; it's on the second story of a building in Old Town with exposed brick and hardwood floors. I was booked with Megan for a full highlight and color. I showed Megan a picture of the color I wanted, and she explained to me how it would look on my hair and how long it would take to get me there. While I waited for my color to process, I enjoyed a glass of red wine (perfect! I had come right after work). For my haircut, I told her that I am growing my hair out; she cut the perfect amount off and made great suggestions for ways to make my cut more stylish. Megan was so friendly and approachable, and most importantly, she listened carefully to everything I said. A few days after my haircut, I received a handwritten thank you letter in the mail from Megan saying that she hoped I liked my new hair and was excited to see me again soon! I really like this salon! I like the edgy feel and the uptown location. Management is cool. They serve wine which I loveeee. The color prices aren't too up there which I like!! I've been going to Rebeca from the get-go, I followed her from Jonathan Breitung Salon. She took me from a level 4-5 and worked it up to level 9-10. I've done almost every damn color in the rainbow and not look like a clown. That's what Rebeca does!! I've gone to other super high end stylists and colorists and always end up going back to her. I also do hair cuts with her, she knows how to take away my split ends and still keep the length. She's also awesome at recommending good quality products. Last Sunday I decided to go a little bit lighter...in my bathroom with some box dye. It was semi disastrous but since I work from home I figured I could get away with waiting a week before getting it fixed, as I didn't want to fry my hair. Two days later, I saw that Swerve was offering a discounted gift certificate on Gilt, so I bought one and made an appointment for a week later with Jennifer for some highlights to remedy my Garfield-the-cat colored roots. Lets cut to the point: The girl is a miracle worker. After working her magic with highlights, lowlights and a deep conditioning treatment, not only do I feel like I can be seen in public without a hat on...I want to run up and down the street and show off my hair! And after salon hopping for the better part of my four and a half years in Chicago, I can say that I will DEFINITELY be back. This review is for Brooke who gave me a facial last night. Brooke was AMAZING! She not only have me an amazing facial, but she also gave me a foot massage and wrapped them in hot towels. She also gave me a shoulder / decolletage massage while I had a mask on my face and I was in heaven. I would highly suggest Brooke! My only complaint is that the facial room is located where everyone checks in and buys product, so you could hear quite a bit of noise. However, the darkness of the room and the music that was on, seemed to drown out the noise quite a bit. read more
